DESTROYING AMERIKA ECONOMY

NOVANEWS

Destroying America’s Economy 101

by Jeff Davis

A disaster for the American economy potentially worse than the subprime mortgage mess is now on the Democrat drawing boards. It is essential that Americans understand what these people are about to do to this country. Desperate to pay for Obamacare and to recoup the untold billions of dollars thrown away as gifts to the banks, the Democrats are planning on introducing a European-style VAT (value-added tax or national sales tax on crack).

A recent news article reports: “President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days… After Obama adviser Paul Volcker recently raised the prospect of a value-added tax, or VAT, the Senate voted 85-13 last week for a nonbinding ’sense of the Senate’ resolution that calls such a tax ‘a massive tax increase that will cripple families on fixed income and only further push back America’s economic recovery.’

For days, White House spokesmen have said the president has not proposed and is not considering a VAT. Many European countries impose a VAT, which taxes the value that is added at each stage of production of certain commodities. It could apply, for instance, to raw products delivered to a mill, the mill’s production work and so on up the line to the retailer.”

The VAT is one of the reasons why private enterprise is almost extinct in Europe except through huge multinational corporations who can afford the crushing taxes on their raw materials and retail. Small businesses simply can’t function; the VAT wipes them out what little profit they have nowadays.

The article notes “When asked if he could see a potential VAT in this nation, the president said: ‘I know that there’s been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something that has worked for some countries. It’s something that would be novel for the United States. And before, you know, I start saying ‘this makes sense or that makes sense,’ I want to get a better picture of what our options are,’ Obama said.”

Quick, Rahm! He’s wandered out where the reporters can find him! Go get his black butt back to reading the teleprompter.

Largely because of VAT and all the other crushing taxes leveled by the socialist governments in places like Britain, Ireland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden, the majority of the people of those countries must live in what is called council housing or other government-owned housing because no one can afford the exorbitant rent for the few properties still privately owned. This may well be one of the plans the regime has for all those foreclosed houses.

The VAT along with the confiscatory income tax (e.g. 64% basic rate in Ireland) leaves most Europeans with so little money that they’re little better off than poor Americans. Once a tax is introduced in this country it will never be repealed because even if the Republicans get back in, they will want all that lovely money to give to their corporate buddies.

Remember, the income tax was originally supposed to be only a temporary tax on the top two percent of Americans to pay for World War One–which ended in 1918. But the income tax and the IRS are still here, and they tax anyone with a job now.

U.S.A: FEDERAL SALES TAX?

NOVANEWS

Democrats Pushing a Federal Sales Tax?

Democrats Pushing a Federal Sales Tax?

by Jeff Davis

Most sane politicians realize that you shouldn’t raise taxes during economic bad times. Unfortunately the current crop of politicians running things aren’t sane. Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama are far Right lunatics, who don’t care about ordinary Americans. They probably don’t understand or simply don’t care that our economy is 70 percent driven by consumer spending, which means the government should leave the consumers with some money in their pockets rather than endlessly increase taxes.

A Reuters article reports that ” ‘The United States should consider raising taxes to help bring deficits under control and may need to consider a European-style value-added tax,’ White House adviser Paul Volcker said on Tuesday. Volcker, answering a question from the audience at a New York Historical Society event, said the value-added tax ‘was not as toxic an idea’ as it has been in the past and also said a carbon or other energy-related tax may become necessary.

Though he acknowledged that both were still unpopular ideas, he said getting entitlement costs and the U.S. budget deficit under control may require such moves. ‘If at the end of the day we need to raise taxes, we should raise taxes,’ he said.”

VAT is short for Value Added Tax, and it is popular among European style socialist welfare states. It is a nationwide sales tax, on some items as high as 20 percent, that is charged on all levels, including raw materials for manufacturing, wholesale, retail, you name it. It is also charged on imported goods at the point of entry, in addition to customs and excise. Indeed, one of the insidious things about VAT is that it is charge over and above, and in addition to other taxes such as sales tax.

By the time a product or item reaches the supermarket or department store shelf and is bought by a European consumer, the cost has been inflated by VAT at four or five points along the way. The result is that a pint of beer in a pub in Ireland now costs something like four euros, of which about fifty cents is for the brewer and the pub owner and the rest is VAT and excise tax. Gasoline or petrol in Europe is usually sold by the liter and is roughly 75 percent tax.

The result of charging VAT in all stages of a product’s journey between manufacturer or importer and the consumer is crushing. Americans always come back from the socialist countries of Europe such as Britain, Sweden, and Germany stunned at how incredibly expensive everything is when translated into dollars.

The burden of VAT on a country which now has a real unemployment of 20%, and where many people are losing their homes to foreclosure, with no relief in sight, would be nothing short of catastrophic and would probably succeed in achieving the Democrats’ goal of destroying the small business part of the private sector economy.

The Democrats are aware of the effect VAT would have on ordinary White Americans. They just don’t care. Obamacare has to be paid for somehow, doesn’t it?

RACIST AMERIKKKA!

NOVANEWS

Is Arizona the Most Racist State in Amerikkka?

In Arizona, get ready for “Zee Papers Please”

arizona-zee-papers

The racial profiling edict passed by the Arizona legislature now on the desk of their Governor will permit a police officer (on his own, without provacation) to stop you and ask “for your papers”.  Don’t have ID?   No problem, go to jail or at least to the intergation room probably housed next door to the water boarding gas chamber!

As a Arab American, what if I don’t look exactly like John McCain?  Am I in trouble because I don’t have my papers on me?

I am concerned that these white guys with badges will simply say I look like a terrorist or some dishwasher at the local Denny’s and confiscate my person.  After all, we middle eastern types look like Mexicans too, so if this law is designed to keep brown people out, I am definitely going to be on their shite list.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Okay, is this hyperbole, exaggeration, or paranoia?  Or is this something I can expect from what is Arizona is trying to become namely: the most racist state in Amerikkka.

Good Job Arizona!   Arizona, the hate state unless you’re white!  Nice!  Hum?  Maybe we should probably do a DoNotTravel2RacistArizona.com site and warn people to avoid this hateful state.  Travel Warning!  Danger Zone!

Okay, look, clearly this legislation looks to be signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is specifically to kick out illegal Mexicans from the their state and frankly, I can understand their desire to enforce already legal laws on the books that are being ignored.  But is this the way to go about it?

Obama just slammed the legislation and so this looks to be another war front between the reactionaries of the past and the peoples who are moving forward into a global competitive world.

As it stands, Mexico is our 2nd largest trading partner and our neighbor.  We have neglected our relationship with them for too long.  It needs to be on top of our list; a thousand times higher up then sending billions to some holy land colonialist country with whom we actually have very little in common with or get much back in return.

We need to invest at home in our schools and in our peoples and in Solar plants, like the one’s they are buidling in Mexicali.  We need smart sharp minds who can make peace and prosperity with our neighbors; not inflicting the indigities of our own failures!  That’s not the USA, that’s the NAZI’s

Mexico actually has a growing middle class and we need to invest much more in her future success because we’re inter-dependant with her.  We share culuture, values, and even our food.  Yeah, our food.  I watch the Food Network all the time and the see the Irish American Bobby Flay making Fish Tacos.  It’s great… the people get it.  We are family!  Now we need to act like it and stop this non-cents.

Look, we allowed these illegal immigrant problem to fester as we looked the other way so that we can hire cheap labor and Mexicans were willing.  But now, we are stuck.

But deporting what amounts to probably 15 million people is immpratical period.  Come on people!  Get real!

We need to give all illegals amnesty and get them registered and paying taxes NOW!

Then, we need to immediately put forth a work permit program that allows Mexicans to come and work for a certain period of time.  This will put working in the USA in the open and allow us to collect tax on their work plus give all concerned the dignity that this country needs to stand for as we move forward and back into principle centered leadership.

Look, I am for enforcement of law but as it stands, what I suspect will happen when the Governor signs this reactionary piece of legislation is that all illegals will run to other states leaving Arizona barren of these workers.

So if you’re in Arizona next week after the Governor signs and can’t seem to get your services on time or that prices have risen by double because wages have suddenly risen to pay for non-brown people to wash dishes, then Bienvenidos a Arizona Nueva!    Get ready, this is battle royal!

WHY PUBLIC TOLERAYES POLITICIANS WHO LIE

NOVANEWS
by Bob Higgins

* By Sherwood Ross *

If you’ve ever wondered why the public tolerates politicians who lie to them it’s likely that they “don’t have a high expectation that they’ll tell the truth” in the first place, a noted ethicist says. As a result, explains Michael Josephson, “when they lie we are generally less offended in principle. That doesn’t make their lying acceptable; it just explains why there is a high tolerance level for it.”

Josephson is one man who should know. He is founder of the nonprofit Josephson Institute of Los Angeles, Calif., and is a well-known radio commentator on the subject. In an interview that appeared in “The Long Term View” magazine published by the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover, Josephson noted that former Boston Mayor James Michael Curley was re-elected from prison in part because “People’s self-interest sometimes is to keep a liar in office if he lies for you as well as against you.” Josephson said, “So, I think it’s very complex as to whether, even if we hate lying, we’re going to tolerate it.”

“If it is perfectly acceptable for politicians to lie, and they can do so without fear of recrimination, then why should they tell the truth?” he asks.

Josephson pointed out that in a democracy it is as if “each citizen were in effect a public official,” one who requires accurate information otherwise they cannot govern. This is even more true of Congress so that “Democracy is being undermined because people do not know if they can trust the information they’re getting.”

He gave as an example the Patriot missile system which the public initially was led to believe had a superb on-target average in the first Gulf War but whose percentage of hits was actually much less than advertised. “Now, how can we as a democracy make critical decisions about what defense systems to use and how much money to spend if we can’t believe the figures?” Josephson asked.

“Going to the next level, even the military doesn’t know what to believe as we find out that defense contractors are lying on their testing data, which is apparently true as well,” the ethicist continued. When this happens, “we are in an extraordinarily precarious situation” and “The level of mistrust is extremely high; it is at the point where it is truly dangerous.”

Josephson says that “every lie is a kind of land mine” and the majority of lies are not discovered but when they are “the land mine explodes and destroys trust.”

He noted that among high school students 70 to 80 percent admit that they cheat, yet less than two percent get caught and of those, only half are punished. “People must decide to treat honesty as such an important value that being dishonest will result in punishment.” He also stressed, “We have to reward people for telling the truth.”

“In performance reviews, we must evaluate whether or not a person is trusted by his co-workers, customers, clients, etc., as well as whether the person produced good results,” Josephson said.

He noted that up to one of every four resumes contain misrepresentations yet only one in five of those workers were fired “and that was only because their bosses weren’t satisfied with their work. So who said cheaters never prosper or that honesty is the best policy?” Josephson asked. One reason lying is so potent, he says, is “because it works.”

Americans need to create a society where losing is acceptable, otherwise people will do anything, including lying, in order to win, the noted ethicist says. And he warns, “If we get to a point where no one is trusted, it will be very hard, if not impossible, for democracy to succeed.” #

The Massachusetts School of Law, publisher of “The Long Term View,” was founded in 1988 to provide a quality, affordable legal education to students from minority, immigrant, and low-income backgrounds who would otherwise not be able to obtain a legal education.

Israel Tells U.S. ‘No’ on Halting Building in East Jerusalem

Israel rejects US demand to halt building in disputed East Jerusalem

By James Hilder

Israel has officially rejected President Obama’s demand that it halt all construction in east Jerusalem, deepening the diplomatic deadlock between the allies just as the US regional envoy is due to renew efforts to resume indirect peace talks.

Officials said that Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, conveyed his position to the White House at the weekend. Mr Netanyahu and other senior ministers had already declared publicly that they would not cease construction in the disputed eastern half of the city, which Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day war.

The refusal cast a shadow over the scheduled arrival of George Mitchell, the US envoy whose return was delayed while both sides tried to find a way out of the impasse.

Mr Mitchell, who helped to broker peace in Northern Ireland a decade ago, is to meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders and try to find a way of opening talks. However, the Palestinians have said that they will not start negotiations until construction is halted in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Israel has agreed to measures that may include allowing Palestinian security forces to take control of further areas of the West Bank and for the Palestinian Authority to open some institutions in east Jerusalem.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, called the Israeli rejection of the US and Palestinian demand unfortunate.

Benny Begin, a senior Israeli Cabinet minister, said: “It is just impossible and unacceptable that people try to impress us that we should limit construction in Jerusalem.

“Jews and Arabs can live throughout the city. This policy will be retained.”

Cleansing Time: Netanyahu Commits to Colonizing East Jerusalem; First Palestinian Expelled under New Policy

Netanyahu Commits to Colonizing East Jerusalem; First Palestinian Expelled under new Policy

by Juan Cole

The new Israeli policy of deporting Palestinians from the West Bank on arbitrary grounds has kicked in with Ahmad Sabah, who has just been deported to Gaza and separated from his family in the West Bank. The measure contravenes the Geneva Convention of 1949 on the treatment of occupied populations, and it also goes contrary to the undertakings Israel made toward the Palestine Authority in the course of the Oslo peace negotiations.

The episode underlines the ways in which their forced statelessness leaves Palestinians (almost uniquely among major world nationalities) completely vulnerable to loss of the most basic human rights. That he was forcibly moved to Gaza by the Israelis suggests that many of those singled out for potential deportation from the West Bank may be moved to the small slum along the Mediterranean, which the Israelis have cut off from its traditional markets and which they keep under a blockade of the civilian population (a war crime).

The Israeli establishment has decided not to try to colonize Gaza, and its isolation and hopelessness make it an attractive place for them to begin exiling West Bank residents, thus making more room for Israeli colonists.

The new policy, which is illegal six ways to Sunday in international law, is the brainchild of the government of far rightwing Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu, an Israeli hawk and expansionist, slapped President Barack Obama in the face again Thursday when he confirmed that he refused to halt construction of new homes in Palestinian East Jerusalem, which is militarily occupied by Israel.

Netanyahu’s announcement is probably the nail in the coffin of any two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (in which the Israelis have thrown most Palestinians now living beyond the Green Line off their land and deprived them of citizenship in a state and all the rights that go with such citizenship).

Palestinians are so despairing that only 57 percent even believe in having an independent Palestinian state any more. The rest are resigned to becoming Israelis in the distant future, when demographic realities and perhaps world-wide boycotts of Israel for its Apartheid-style policies toward the occupied Palestinian will force Israel to accept them.

At the same time, Netanyahu tried to throw sand in peoples’ eyes by talking about recognizing an ‘interim’ Palestinian state with “temporary” borders.

Palestinian leaders reject this formulation, which is intended to allow the Israelis to continue aggressively to colonize Palestinian territory while pretending that they are engaged in a ‘peace process.’ The Palestine Authority, established in the 1990s, was already a sort of interim state then, and Palestine’s borders were then ‘temporary.’

So temporary that Israel has made deep inroads into them through massive colonies and building a wall on the Palestinian side of the border, cutting residents off from their own farms and sequestering entire towns and cities.

Netanyahu’s various moves this week, from illegally expelling a Palestinian from the West Bank to Gaza– to blowing off the president of the United States and hitching his wagon to massive increased colonization of Palestinian land– all of these steps are guaranteed to mire Israel in violent disputes for years and perhaps decades.

And the US, which has already suffered tremendously in Iraq and elsewhere from its knee-jerk support of illegal and inhumane Israeli policies toward the Palestinians, will suffer further.

Meanwhile, in the wake of a vicious attack on Barack Obama by New York senator Chuck Schumer, Steve Clemons of the Washington Note frankly wonders whether Schumer understands he is in the US Senate or whether he is under the impression he is serving in the Israeli Knesset.

ZIO-NAZI CHIEF RABBI LETTER TO GOLDSTONE

NOVANEWS

Hi All,

I trust that you all know that Judge Goldstone was barred (if not in actuality, in intent) from attending his grandson’s bar mitzvah, and on top of that received a biting accusing letter from the chief rabbi.  The cartoon comments on the situation, and does so, as Ran says, ‘brilliantly.’

When corporate media falls asleep, human rights groups can fill the breach

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 05:05 PM PDT

It’s easy to forget that human rights groups often provide far more investigatory muscle than most mainstream news services. Over to you, Global Witness:

The Dutch Supreme Court has overturned a 2008 ruling by the Court of Appeal which cleared businessman Guus Kouwenhoven of charges of involvement in illegal arms deals and war crimes during the civil war in Liberia between 2000 and 2003. The Court of Appeal will now have to re-examine the case and bring a new judgment.

Global Witness, which first documented the involvement of Kouwenhoven in illegal logging and arms trafficking in its 2001 report, Taylor Made, welcomed the court’s decision.

The 2008 ruling by the Court of Appeal had overturned an 8 year prison sentence for arms trafficking handed down by the Court of First Instance in 2006. Global Witness testified on both occasions, after securing a groundbreaking right to keep their sources confidential. Evidence from Global Witness investigations and reports was used by the Dutch prosecutors.

Kouwenhoven was head of the Oriental Timber Corporation (OTC) during the regime of President Charles Taylor, who waged a brutal war against the people of Liberia and Sierra Leone, funded largely through the sale of diamonds and illegal logging.

OTC, also known also as ‘Old Taylor’s Children’ or ‘Only Taylor Chops’, was the most notorious logging company in the country and dominated the Liberian timber industry with 1.6 million hectares of concessions.

UN experts and eyewitnesses interviewed by Global Witness reported that it was active in organising weapons shipments, and that its own security personnel blurred with Taylor’s armed forces and took part in military activities for the Liberian government.  OTC money facilitated arms purchases.

In April 2003, President Taylor’s spokesperson, Vaani Paasewe, confirmed this in a media interview: “It is true that, as Global Witness has said in its report, revenues from Liberia’s logging industry had been used to import weapons recently despite the UN arms embargo…”

A 2000 UN Expert Panel Report on Sierra Leone referred to Kouwenhoven as a “…member of President [Charles] Taylor’s inner circle” and “responsible for the logistical aspects of many of the arms deals [with the RUF].” In 2001 the UN Expert Panel Report on Liberia referred to him as “…one of the most influential businessmen in Liberia”.

Kouwenhoven was placed on UN travel ban list in 2001 and in July 2003 sanctions on timber were put in place, on the grounds that timber was being traded by rebel and government forces in exchange for arms.

Patrick Alley, Director of Global Witness, said: “Charles Taylor’s regime depended on revenues from the timber industry. OTC’s operations in Liberia were illegal and under Kouwenhoven they paid large sums both directly to a known arms dealer and into Charles Taylor’s personal bank account, thereby supporting his brutal regime. The war in Liberia cost over 250,000 lives. No one who played a role in perpetuating this conflict should go unpunished.”

What the world wants is rampaging Zionist forces fighting evil

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 05:00 PM PDT

Must we continue to suffer this kind of Zionist chauvinism year in year out?

Over the past 20 years, we’ve evolved from films like Schindler’s List to movies like Defiance and Inglourious Basterds. Jewish characterizations have morphed from victims to strong, rugged combatants in the face of threats from Nazis – now they face evil head on with brawny bravura.

Arguably too, many Americans’ reference point for Jewish identification is Israel. And today it stands as a source of strength – economically, militarily and, according to Gallup, Americans’ support of Israel ranks 63 percent – higher than after 1967 and just one point below its high after the Gulf War.

Still, one can’t miss the skewed news reports and factually misleading editorials blaming Israel for the ills that plague the region.

President Barack Obama’s misdirected pressure on Israel, especially given Iran’s nuclear ambitions that each day come closer to actuality, is of utmost concern. Iran presents an existential threat to Israel through either itself or one of its terrorist proxies and destabilizes the entire region.

BUT WHAT if, in this postmodern world, where the line between fiction and fact splice together seamlessly (Director Quentin Tarantino literally has the film Inglourious Basterds burn Hitler and his cronies to death), the story of Eichmann’s capture and a true wish-fulfillment fantasy made real were to be revived?

Put yourself in the director’s chair and wonder, if you will, what if the Mossad captured Osama bin Laden. Imagine what that would do. Who in this country could claim to be anti-Zionist then? In one fell swoop, it would be an end-run around placating the Obama administration, by directly appealing to the American people and a world constituency demonstrating a vigilant determination to seek justice.

Stark images from the Gaza Strip

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:56 AM PDT

So much of the Western press refuses to publish the most gruesome images of our wars (must protect the kiddies, of course) but it’s encouraging that some are not shying away from our complicity:

NAZI’S IN GAZA ‘NOVA’

Photojournalist Khalil Hamra of the Associated Press is the winner of this year’s Robert Capa Gold Medal Award from the Overseas Press Club for his powerful photographs, “War In Gaza.”

“Hamra’s pictures of the Israeli military incursion into Gaza showed exceptional courage and enterprise by a committed local photographer during a sustained and highly dangerous conflict,” OPC judges said of their selection.

“This is a big honor,” Hamra told News Photographer magazine when he arrived in New York City this week. “When I got an eMail from the AP office in New York saying that I had won the Capa, I had to ask them three or four times, ‘Is this a joke?’ I could not imagine that I would win this, it was a very big surprise. The first thing I did was to call every one of my colleagues and tell them. They could not believe it either.”

The Robert Capa Gold Medal Award is given by the OPC in recognition of the “best published photographic reporting from abroad, requiring exceptional courage and enterprise.” It honors the legacy of the great war photographer Robert Capa of Magnum Photos.

The award will be presented to Hamra tonight at the OPC’s annual dinner in New York City, emceed by Kimberly Dozier, the AP’s new intelligence reporter and a veteran correspondent who was injured in Iraq four years ago.

“His images are close up, powerful and direct, and taken at considerable risk due to the nature of the conflict which had combatants mingling amongst the civilian population,” OPC’s judges said. “Hamra’s personal circumstances are equally compelling: he covered the conflict in spite of concerns about the welfare of his wife, then pregnant with twins.” [Two healthy boys were born later.]

Born in Kuwait in 1979 to Palestinian parents, the photojournalist grew up in Qatar, Egypt, and Palestine. He’s a 2001 journalism graduate of the Islamic University in Gaza and in 2002 he began freelancing for AP. His work was included in a group exhibit “The Intifada” at Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan in 2004.

In New York for the OPC awards dinner, Hamra reflected upon his Gaza images. “These people are my people,” he told News Photographer magazine. “When I was photographing the girl screaming over the bodies of her relatives in front of a house, that was very shocking.

I was thinking at the time of my mother, of my family, of my wife. I was always thinking, ‘I don’t know these people, but what if I am shooting and I see one of my family? Someone I know?’ Too many of these pictures I shot through heavy tears.”

He says that in the nine years he’s been shooting pictures in the Gaza for the AP, he’s been “shooting bloody pictures of incidents for much of that time, but this was different. It was a continuous catastrophe for 22 days, non-stop bleeding. It was very, very hard. In the beginning of my career if I had to go to a hospital morgue and shoot a picture of a baby, I couldn’t manage. But this war changed everything.”

Hamra said that covering a war is a very different experience when it’s being fought on your own soil, and not in some far-away foreign land.

“When you’re covering a war in some place where you don’t live, across the world, it’s something you’ve chosen, you picked it, you decided to go. But when the war comes to you, it is completely different. When it is in the place where you live, you have to do it. I covered the Gaza from one side, from the inside, so that every single shot is in some way about my people, the victims, and that affects me a lot.

To be honest, it was like we were stuck … no one could come from the outside to help us. From my place I did my side, and outside the others did their side. We worked hard, but at the same time we were looking for help and support from people outside.”

“Wars should never be forgotten,” Hamra said. “When you are in the middle of a war as a journalist, or a photographer, or a soldier, it affects you. When you are in the middle of the blood and the victims and you might be one of them, that also is not easy. Wars are the same everywhere but the difference is if you are a citizen or one of the locals and you face war in your own country. I am just thankful that I could do something, something with my cameras.”

The photojournalist’s boss at the Associated Press shared in the OPC judges’ praise for Hamra. “I’m delighted that Khalil won the Robert Capa Gold Medal,” AP’s director of photography Santiago Lyon said this week from Paris.

“His work demonstrates yet again that local photographers are becoming increasingly valuable to international news organizations and in the case of this story, essential. Foreign journalists were largely blocked from entering Gaza to cover the key phases of the conflict.” Hamra is based in Rafah and generally covers the southern Gaza Strip.

Jews who love God and a nice serving of bacon

This line in an Atlantic article caught my eye and made me laugh:

There have been articles—click here and here for examples—in the Jewish press about Jewish-owned restaurants and businesses embracing the pork trend, and the more specific bacon trend, which may have reached its crescendo with the bacon-wrapped matzoh balls recently featured on Top Chef.

While American Jews romance Israel, their dream is dying

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:31 AM PDT

Another day, another American politician who wants to sleep with Israel like she’s a fine (amoral) lady:

New York Senator Chuck Schumer harshly criticized the Obama Administration’s attempts to exert pressure on Israel today, making him the highest-ranking Democrat to object to Obama’s policies in such blunt terms.

Schumer, along with a majority of members of the House and Senate, signed on to letters politely suggesting the U.S. keep its disagreements with Israel private, a tacit objection to the administration’s very public rebuke of the Jewish State over construction in Jerusalem last month.

But Schumer dramatically sharpened his tone on the politically conservative Jewish Nachum Segal Show today, calling the White House stance to date “counter-productive” and describing his own threat to “blast” the Administration had the State Department not backed down from its “terrible” tough talk toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Schumer, a hawkish ally of Israel since his days as a Brooklyn Congressman, described “a battle going on inside the administration” over Middle East policy.

“This has to stop,” he said of the administration’s policy of publicly pressuring Israel to end construction in Jerusalem.

“I told the President, I told Rahm Emanuel and others in the administration that I thought the policy they took to try to bring about negotiations is counter-productive, because when you give the Palestinians hope that the United States will do its negotiating for them, they are not going to sit down and talk,” Schumer told Segal.

“Palestinians don’t really believe in a state of Israel. They, unlike a majority of Israelis, who have come to the conclusion that they can live with a two-state solution to be determined by the parties, the majority of Palestinians are still very reluctant, and they need to be pushed to get there.

“If the U.S. says certain things and takes certain stands the Palestinians say, ‘Why should we negotiate?’” Schumer said.

Schumer described the recent confrontation over construction in Jerusalem as a “kerfuffle.”

“Israel apologized and when Biden left, and Biden is the best friend of Israel in the administration [and] everything was fine,” Schumer said. “But then what happened is the next day Hillary Clinton called up Netanyahu and talked very tough to him, and worse they made it public through this spokesperson, a guy named Crowley. And Crowley said something I have never heard before, which is, the relationship of Israel and the United States depends on the pace of the negotiations.”

Schumer was referring to State Department spokesman PJ Crowley’s description of Clinton’s conversation with Netanyahu, in which he said that Clinton “made clear that the Israeli government needed to demonstrate not just through words but through specific actions that they are committed to this relationship and to the peace process.”

“That is terrible,” Schumer said today. “That is the dagger because the relationship is much deeper than the disagreements on negotiations, and most Americans—Democrat, Republican, Jew, non-Jew–would feel that. So I called up Rahm Emanuel and I called up the White House and I said, ‘If you don’t retract that statement you are going to hear me publicly blast you on this,’” Schumer said.

Schumer said the White House had backed off that statement, but that now “many of us are pushing back, some of the Jewish members will be meeting with the President next week or the week after, and we are saying that this has to stop.”

“You have to show Israel that it’s not going to be forced to do things it doesn’t want to do and can’t do. At the same time you have to show the Palestinians that they are not going to get their way by just sitting back and not giving in, and not recognizing that there is a state of Israel,” Schumer said.

“And right now there is a battle going on inside the administration, one side agrees with us, one side doesn’t, and we’re pushing hard to make sure the right side wins and if not we’ll have to take it to the next step.”

Of course, now the media is left reporting these pathetic stories:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is amenable to an interim agreement in the West Bank that would include the establishment of a Palestinian state within temporary borders.

Netanyahu considers such an interim step a possible way to unfreeze the stalled political process that was created because of the Palestinian leadership’s refusal to resume talks on a final settlement. However, the prime minister insists on delaying discussion on the final status of Jerusalem to the end of the process, and refuses to agree to a freeze on Jewish construction in East Jerusalem.

While Hamas is being slammed in some circles as too moderate and accommodating towards Israel (not that they’ve received anything in return), I’m encouraged by this letter to Elie Wiesel about the real Jerusalem away from the idealistic nonsense pedelled in much of the West:

Dear Mr. Wiesel,

We write to you from Jerusalem to convey our frustration, even outrage, at your recently published letter on Jerusalem. We are Jewish Jerusalemites – residents by choice of a battered city, a city used and abused, ransacked time and again first by foreign conquerors and now by its own politicians. We cannot recognize our city in the sentimental abstraction you call by its name.

Our Jerusalem is concrete, its hills covered with limestone houses and pine trees; its streets lined with synagogues, mosques and churches. Your Jerusalem is an ideal, an object of prayers and a bearer of the collective memory of a people whose members actually bear many individual memories.

Our Jerusalem is populated with people, young and old, women and men, who wish their city to be a symbol of dignity – not of hubris, inequality and discrimination. You speak of the celestial Jerusalem; we live in the earthly one.

For more than a generation now the earthly city we call home has been crumbling under the weight of its own idealization. Your letter troubles us, not simply because it is replete with factual errors and false representations, but because it upholds an attachment to some other-worldly city which purports to supersede the interests of those who live in the this-worldly one.

For every Jew, you say, a visit to Jerusalem is a homecoming, yet it is our commitment that makes your homecoming possible. We prefer the hardship of realizing citizenship in this city to the convenience of merely yearning for it.

Indeed, your claim that Jerusalem is above politics is doubly outrageous. First, because contemporary Jerusalem was created by a political decision and politics alone keeps it formally unified. The tortuous municipal boundaries of today’s Jerusalem were drawn by Israeli generals and politicians shortly after the 1967 war.

Feigning to unify an ancient city, they created an unwieldy behemoth, encircling dozens of Palestinian villages which were never part of Jerusalem. Stretching from the outskirts of Ramallah in the north to the edge of Bethlehem in the south, the Jerusalem the Israeli government foolishly concocted is larger than Paris.

Its historical core, the nexus of memories and religious significance often called “the Holy Basin”, comprises a mere one percent of its area. Now they call this artificial fabrication ‘Jerusalem’ in order to obviate any approaching chance for peace.

Second, your attempt to keep Jerusalem above politics means divesting us of a future. For being above politics is being devoid of the power to shape the reality of one’s life. As true Jerusalemites, we cannot stand by and watch our beloved city, parts of which are utterly neglected, being used as a springboard for crafty politicians and sentimental populists who claim Jerusalem is above politics and negotiation. All the while, they franticly “Judaize” Eastern Jerusalem in order to transform its geopolitics beyond recognition.

We invite you to our city to view with your own eyes the catastrophic effects of the frenzy of construction. You will witness that, contrary to some media reports, Arabs are not allowed to build their homes anywhere in Jerusalem. You discover see the gross inequality in allocation of municipal resources and services between east and west.

We will take you to Sheikh Jarrah, where Palestinian families are being evicted from their homes to make room for a new Jewish neighborhood, and to Silwan, where dozens of houses face demolition because of the Jerusalem Municipality’s refusal to issue building permits to Palestinians.

We, the people of Jerusalem, can no longer be sacrificed for the fantasies of those who love our city from afar. This-worldly Jerusalem must be shared by the people of the two nations residing in it. Only a shared city will live up to the prophet’s vision: “Zion shall be redeemed with justice”. As we chant weekly in our vigils in Sheikh Jarrah: “Nothing can be holy in an occupied city!” Respectfully,

Just Jerusalem (Sheikh Jarrah) Activists

Here’s how corporate and Zionist smearing works. British Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg is surging in the polls and this makes the old hacks, who can only imagine a two-party reality, nervous. Besides, anybody that dares challenge Israel and the US is clearly beyond the pale. For the record, Clegg is hardly some radical (for example, he backs the current war in Afghanistan.)

So, here’s London’s Telegraph:

With Thursday night’s foreign policy debate looming, it’s important to take a look at Nick Clegg’s willingness to vilify Israel, and his inclination towards bashing the Israelis over the head. I’ve written about Clegg’s distinctly anti-American views and his complete disregard for the NATO alliance, but his policies towards Israel deserve attention as well.

Israel is a close ally of both Great Britain and the United States, the only full democracy in the Middle East along with Iraq, and is under constant fire from Iranian and Syrian-backed terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hizbollah. Its very existence is threatened by the rise of a nuclear-armed Iran, which has malevolently warned of another Holocaust.

Yet, the leader of the Liberal Democrats still thinks it’s necessary to demonise Israel, one of our only friends in the region. He’s doing everything but directly call Gaza an Israeli-administered concentration camp.

In his statements, Clegg has drawn a dangerous and false parallel between the Israelis and Islamist terrorist groups. For example he wrote a piece for The Guardian in January 2009 entitled “We Must Stop Arming Israel” condemning Israel’s response to Hamas attacks, and in effect calling for the EU to isolate and even sanction Israel:

Brown must stop sitting on his hands. He must condemn unambiguously Israel’s tactics, just as he has rightly condemned Hamas’s rocket attacks. Then he must lead the EU into using its economic and diplomatic leverage in the region to broker peace.

The EU is by far Israel’s biggest export market, and by far the biggest donor to the Palestinians. It must immediately suspend the proposed new cooperation agreement with Israel until things change in Gaza, and apply tough conditions on any long-term assistance to the Palestinian community.

In December 2009, Clegg was the lead signatory to an Observer letter by a group of MPs which made sensational claims about Israel “imprisoning” millions of Palestinians:

One year on from Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli government continues to imprison 1.5 million Palestinians and prevent the rebuilding of its shattered infrastructure. Israel’s blockade of Gaza, described by the UN fact-finding mission as “collective punishment”, stops reconstruction materials and humanitarian aid from reaching those who so desperately require it… The confinement and punishment of an entire population is no way to bring about peace for all the people of the Middle East.

Also in December 2009, Nick Clegg penned another piece for The Guardian entitled “Lift the Gaza Blockade: The Suffering is Shocking”, which in parts reads like an anti-Israeli propaganda document drawn up by the Palestinian Authority:

The legacy of Operation Cast Lead is a living nightmare for one and a half million Palestinians squeezed into one of the most overcrowded and wretched stretches of land on the planet. How is the peace process served by sickness, mortality rates, mental trauma and malnutrition increasing in Gaza? Is it not in Israel’s enlightened self-interest to relieve the humanitarian suffering? … No peaceful coexistence of any kind is possible as long as this act of collective confinement continues.

While Nick Clegg has made it a personal mission to publicly whip the Israelis for defending their own country, he has remained remarkably silent in the media about Iranian backing for terrorist groups, Tehran’s calls to wipe Israel off the map, and the massive levels of hatred directed at Israel from within the United Nations, not least the UN’s Human Rights Council.

I don’t recall any op-eds by Clegg warning against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, or calling for an end to the persecution of Israel by Islamist states. Nor has he written pieces in support of the democracy protestors in Iran, many of whom have been brutally beaten, raped, and in some cases murdered by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime.

As a former EU bureaucrat, Clegg brings with him to Westminster the sneering condescension towards Israel which is so pervasive in Brussels and Strasbourg. It is a destructive approach that undermines a close British ally while encouraging Israel’s enemies.

There is an important distinction between a free, democratic society like Israel, acting in self-defence, and brutal terrorist organisations such as Hamas and Hizbollah. Clegg’s drawing of moral equivalence between the two sides is both sickening and offensive.

And the Jewish Chronicle:

A controversial Iraqi-British billionaire who funds one of the UK’s most strongly anti-Zionist websites organised a banquet in honour of Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, and a fundraiser for Susan Kramer, the party’s candidate in the high-profile seat of Richmond Park.

Nadhmi Auchi, 73, was convicted of fraud in the giant French Elf-Aquitaine oil company trial in 2003 and given a suspended sentence, although he is seeking to appeal the verdict.

The Lib Dems told the JC that the connection between the party and the billionaire was limited to the two events and that Mr Auchi was not a donor to the party.

Mr Clegg spoke at a dinner hosted by Mr Auchi’s Anglo-Arab Organisation, set up to promote understanding between Britain and the Arab world last November. The Lib Dems confirmed that the AAO also organised a £60-a-head dinner for Ms Kramer, which raised around £5,000.

Mr Auchi’s Middle East Online site promotes material by well-known anti-Zionists such as musician-activist Gilad Atzmon and Jeff Gates, who runs the anti-Israel “Criminal State” blog.

Mr Auchi also helped fund the first of George Galloway’s “Viva Palestina” convoys taking aid to Gaza.

The former Lib Dem leader Lord Steel is a longstanding director of Mr Auchi’s Luxembourg-registered company General Mediterranean Holdings. Other politicians who have worked with Mr Auchi include Lord Lamont and former minister Keith Vaz.

At the weekend, the Mail on Sunday revealed that Lord Steel approached Lib Dem health spokesman Norman Lamb to reassure him about Mr Auchi after Mr Lamb asked a series of questions about the billionaire in Parliament.

Mr Auchi is fiercely protective of his reputation and has used libel lawyers Carter-Ruck to force several newspapers and blogs to remove references to his activities. Despite Lord Steel’s approaches, Mr Lamb raised this issue in a Commons debate on libel in December 2008: “It is alleged that Mr Auchi and his lawyers, Carter Ruck, have been making strenuous efforts to close down public debate.”

Emad Rezqa was hit in the forehead by an aluminum tear gas projectile shot directly at him by Israeli soldiers during the weekly anti-Wall demonstration in Bil’in earlier today. He suffered a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage. Rezqa is currently hospitalized at the Hadassa Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem.

The demonstration Rezqa was injured in concluded the three-day International Bil’in Conference on Popular Struggle, and was attended by hundreds of people. Five demonstrators were arrested during the protest.

For more details: Jonathan Pollak +972546327736

The march, which commenced at the village’s mosque after the midday prayer, was attacked with tear gas some 30 seconds after reaching the gate in the Wall, despite the fact that it was entirely peaceful. The gas forced most of the participants to retreat back towards the village, but a smaller group managed to stay by the gate, chanting and shouting slogans.

A few minutes after, a group of soldiers began firing a second round of tear gas projectiles, this time directly at the demonstrators from a distance of about 30 meters. Rezqa was hit and quickly evacuated to the Ramallah hospital with blood gushing from his forehead. He was transferred to the Hadassa Ein Karem hospital after being x-rayed and diagnosed as suffering a broken skull.

Following Rezqa’s injury, soldiers invaded Bil’in through the gate in the Wall and arrested four protesters who were staging a sit-in some hundred meters away from the Wall, as well as a journalist who was next to them.

Another demonstrator was similarly injured today during a demonstration in the village of Nabi Saleh. The protester was hit in the head with a tear gas projectile shot directly at him after the Army invaded the village even before the demonstration began.

In Ni’ilin, roughly 300 people demonstrated in solidarity with the villages political prisoners. The demonstration was attended by two PLC members from the Change and Reform party – Mahmoud Ramahi and Fadhel Saleh, who joined the protest today following Ramahi’s statement in support of the popular struggle last Wednesday during the Bil’in conference.

Ramahi and Slaeh’s participation is yet another sign of the recent expansion of the popular struggle and the momentum the movement is gaining in the Palestinian street.

GORDON DUFF: MORE AND MORE OF WHAT YOU AREN’T SUPPOSED TO KNOW

OBAMA THOUGHT HE HAD BEEN ELECTED PRESIDENT

MILITARY WARNS PRESIDENT TO “STEP UP TO THE PLATE”

By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor

The powers, factions and conspiracies that influence our government, moreover a less visible world government is guessed at, lied about but generally never seen.  Suffice it to say that what is read in newspapers, seen on TV or on the internet is wrong, even the conspiracies that seem so very right.

People who care, people often in power, sometimes in decision making positions in the US or other countries or senior members of defense and intelligence organizations are more than a bit misinformed also.  A few things have come together lately.

No “great plot” will be made from them.  Those I am writing to will know why I am writing this and why it can be said so openly.  I will try to keep it short.

The total breakdown in the alliance between the US and Israel has surprised and upset a number of people.  Yes, senators sign letters, Netanyahu buys newspaper advertisements and holocaust stories are hit print at the rate of a dozen a day, with “denialists” herded off to prison by the carload.

Gaza stories are suppressed, reporters are being hunted down.  None of this surprises anyone.  This goes on all the time.  Live with it.

The plan was for McCain to win as president or for Obama to get in but Emanual Rahm was supposed to pull his strings.  Either way, Iran was scheduled to be attacked using much of the same rhetoric that got us into Iraq.

America has massive forces in theater, good logistical capabilities and Iraq is willing to reconsider use of its airspace and bases for an attack on Iran.   Combat levels in Iraq and Afghanistan are very low, almost non-existent and all the enemy leaders in Afghanistan, Hikmatyar, Mullah Omar and others have been offered participation in a government, Karzai’s head has been offered to them and others have been killed off with the help of Pakistan’s ISI.

Inside the US, Israel’s powerful group around Bush is gone but they still have the State Department, Bill and Hillary Clinton and AIPAC’s ability to put 75% of the members of congress around anything from a resolution that the moon is made of green cheese to “National Have Sex With Your Child Day.”

In Germany, the UK and US, media giants controlled by Israeli assets and Christian Zionist allies march on cue, suppressing news, running any story and manipulating the masses, Britain, Germany, America along with Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED

General Petraeus, our senior operational commander, the guy really in charge of our entire military, told Admiral Mullen, the man whose job it is to hold everything  together, that Israel had become a massive liability.  Israel is subjected to no foreign threats.

All the nations around them have long since demilitarized, Iraq is “history” and Iran is embroiled in a near civil war along with being surrounded on both sides by massive American forces and bordered on the south by the Indian Ocean, an American lake.

Iran has repeatedly approached Pakistan, asking the US to “hold off” and has promised to be good.  Oil prices are down, cutting Iran’s income, the Russians have refused to install the new SA300 air defense system and any attempts to build a credible defense system, conventional, nuclear or imaginary is a waste of time.

Iran is worried because they are loaded with oil and gas, are vulnerable, not far from defenseless and have one of the worst run governments in the world.

Iran is irrelevant.

Despite their oil, Pakistan, barely holding on themselves but nuclear armed and with 5 times the real army Iran has, may be the only friend they have.  Pakistan and Iran are Muslim but Iran is Shia, a sect pretty incompatible with mainstream Islam, with the exception of Iraq.

ISRAEL HAS…

Israel has put in motion a plan to force the US to destabilize Iran and believes they can be partitioned, breaking off areas that would give Israel and their partners access to massive deposits of natural gas.  With Iraq and Israel out of the way, Israel, with their alliance with India could destroy Pakistan and gain total control over the Arab regions while India would rule the rest, including the former Soviet narco-republics.

Afghanistan’s heroin output is 65 billion dollars a year, according to Colonel Eugene Khrushchev, one time senior Soviet military officer in the Kabul embassy RT (Russia Television) military analyst  and Veterans Today editor.

This cash controls half a dozen governments and buys influence in 2 dozen more.  This massive pool of laundered money, in the right place at the right time, has untold influence.

By this time, America was supposed to have bombed the imaginary nuclear production facilities in Iran and dismembered the country “to secure them from producing more weapons” reminiscent of the “toothless” American operation against Saddam in 1991.

OBAMA PULLS BACK, ISRAEL HAS OVERPLAYED ITS HAND

Obama was confronted with a choice.  He has been informed that neither the military nor the intelligence services were going to participate in attacks on Iran under any imaginable circumstances and if he didn’t “grow a pair” he and Emanuel Rahm would have to invade Iran personally and get their flying “coach” on Emirates Air.

With Israel marshaling its stooges and shills, its bought and paid for “retired military officers” and hundreds of members of congress swearing their fealty and obedience to Israel onto death, Obama went after Israel’s biggest prize in America, Goldman Sachs.  This is “ground zero” in Israel’s management of America’s “bankster” economy, the prime asset for the control and looting of America through “pump and dump” market games.

Obama set the SEC on them.  The Department of Justice would have been more appropriate, but the President and Attorney General Eric Holder were unable to find a enough of a team within the DOJ that weren’t “on the pad” to begin the prosecution.

ISRAEL’S LAST GASP

Demonstrating total control over the Republican Party, getting them to humiliate themselves by opposing prosecution of the most hated company in America since Enron was a show of power, or would have been at one time.  However, power no longer resides in congress.  Congress is distrusted by most Americans, has no real power and certainly can’t bring the dead back to life.

WHAT ISRAEL BELIEVES ABOUT AMERICA

Israel believes they can control America through the press and through political movements that show dissatisfaction in government.  Underlying all of this is the belief Israel holds that American is likely to sink into race war.  Extremist leaders in Israel look on African Americans as less than human, quite the opposite of traditional progressive Jews who stood at the forefront of the civil rights movement.  These are not the same people, quite the opposite.

The extremist government in Israel believes there is a massive undercurrent of hatred for Obama, the “N word” president and that millions of Americans are ready to rise against the government entirely based on race and a bit of watery subterfuge about “socialism.”  With “assets” and “informants” among the isolated wealthy and powerful in Washington and the Hollywood elite advising them, their “non-reality” based assessment of America’s social cohesion, a belief that Glen Beck and Sarah Palin fans make up the majority of Americans and that those people are all motivated by race hatred and class envy is a mistake.

How could people believe this?  Its simple, Americans, when angry and dissatisfied make alot of noise.  People forget that Americans are still Americans, most of us anyway.

BLACKMAIL

Thus, Israel is threatening a childish and useless attack on Iran.  They have no targets.  There is nothing to destroy, nothing to be protected from and no ability to mount any significant air attack with their extremely limited capabilities in that area.

However, they could force Iran to close the Straits of Hormuz, cutting off oil to the world, cutting off income to the Gulf States and crashing the American stock markets again, conveniently since they DOW is over 11,000 and people are becoming hopeful and starting to invest.

Gasoline would immediately hit $6.00 a gallon and move to $8.00.  Oil company profits would soar.  Housing prices in America would lose another 20%, another bailout would become necessary and the Obama presidency would be a disaster.

Also, of course, a world wide depression would set in crushing the Euro, Pound and Dollar.

THE CHOICES

Every time you hear an American leader state his “undying loyalty” to Israel, what you are hearing is something very different.  This is the sound of a door closing.  “Undying loyalty” is diplomatic terms for “don’t let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.”

Israel is going to have to make its own decisions.  It has elected a government that has made some enormous mistakes, some based on watching 8 years of America’s self destruction.  America is not always a wonderful country.  It simply has wonderful people.  Lincoln reminded us, nearly a century and a half ago, “You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.”

Not every American is going to sit on a folding chair with a sign, “Save Granny from Obama Death Panels” just because of a bit of bad brain chemistry and mysterious noises from a television.
