THE WIKI-WEASEL

THE “WIKI-WEASEL” VINDICATES BUSH, WAR, TORTURE AND…?

“Wikileaks is a big and dangerous US intelligence Con Job which will likely be used to police the Internet”….F. William Engdahl

“supporting WikiLeaks founder, Julius Assange and..calling for revolution due to government cover-ups are intended results of a counterintelligence reverse tactic”…Bob Levin, FBI whistleblower

By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor

I can only say one word, flabbergasted.  When I got the article by Larry Elder, a journalist who is known for finding the real story behind the story, I nearly dropped.  The recent release of diplomatic cables, described by former National Security Advisor Zbiegnew Brzezinski as “seeded” with “pointed” facts to “favor an agenda” by an “intelligence agency” clearly restores long discredited George “W” Bush to a place of honor.

“Bush, hammered by the insidious “Bush Lied, People Died” mantra, endured one of the most vicious smears against any president in history. He is owed an apology.

When Hollywood makes ‘The Vindication of George W. Bush,’ maybe Sean Penn can play the lead.”

Bush, assaulted on all sides, his book tours besieged by protests, a president who left office with a country reeling in debt, losing two wars and now with his former vice president, Dick Cheney,  indicted for bribery, is a hard sell as a hero.  Before this, Wikileaks championed the war on Iraq and its planned expansion into Iran, a continuing theme, as Brzezinski points out, always the “point” of Wikileaks, war on Iran.  Everything always goes there.  “Hello, how’s your mom, wasn’t that an Iranian I saw sneaking into her garage…?”

WIKILEAKS IS A BROKEN RECORD

Larry Elder isn’t lying.  Wikileaks is clearly trying, so very hard, to vindicate Bush and prove Saddam had a nuclear program, something proven dead wrong before 9/11, proven dead wrong in 2003 and in every other source on earth other than Wikileaks, long accepted as always “dead wrong.”  Isn’t the fact that the “sexed up” intel on WMD’s was long proven dead wrong the reason for the Chilcott Inquiry in Britain?  Hasn’t Tony Blair been assailed for years for having WMD (weapons of mass destruction)  intelligence on Iraq “sexed up?”

Now that the death of Dr. David Kelly, the man who took Blair to task over this is now being looked at as a murder, one would think that trying to prove the utterly unproveable would be a hard sell.  Wikileaks doesn’t think so.  In fact, there is nothing Wikileaks doesn’t think it can’t do.

Elder scoured the Wikileaks “output” and makes a powerful case for the 2003 invasion.  From his article at Townhall.com.

“The WikiLeaks de facto declassification of privileged material makes it case closed: Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction — and intended to restart his program once the heat was off.”

Elder then quotes Noah Schloctman, described as “a nonresident fellow at the liberal Brookings Institution” and editor of Wired Magazine.  Wired, of course, is owned by Advance Publications, you know, The New Yorker, Tatler, Brides Magazine and dozens of very conservative newspapers.  This is Noah Schloctman as quoted by Larry Elder as quoted by, oh, you get the picture;

“By late 2003, even the Bush White House’s staunchest defenders were starting to give up on the idea that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. But WikiLeaks’ newly-released Iraq war documents reveal that for years afterward, U.S. troops continued to find chemical weapons labs, encounter insurgent specialists in toxins and uncover weapons of mass destruction (emphasis added). … Chemical weapons, especially, did not vanish from the Iraqi battlefield. Remnants of Saddam’s toxic arsenal, largely destroyed after the Gulf War, remained. Jihadists, insurgents and foreign (possibly Iranian) agitators turned to these stockpiles during the Iraq conflict — and may have brewed up their own deadly agents.”

IRAQ WAR LOGS – WIKILEAKS VERSION

These are the seven reports that Elder, and, by proxy, Schloctman, are referring to as taken from the Iraq War Logs;

1.      10th June 2006:  Al Qaida in Iraq insurgents plan to attack a forward operating base in Karmah with chemical weapons…The insurgents plan to deploy their chemical weapon using mortars as a delivery system. (Analyst Comments: In Iraq AQI has tried several times to employ chemical weapons against coalition forces).

2.      16th August 2008:  CBRN personnel has tested the rounds twice with M8 paper and J CAM. EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), and chemical recon element assess that the chemical … tested positive for chemical agent. EOD reports 12 x full chemical rounds. 14 x damaged rounds are either leaking or empty. The cache consisted of 26 contaminated  rounds and 14 empty 155mm  rounds.

3.      13th October 2005:  As of late September 2005, Al-Qa’ida in Iraq elements allegedly planned to attack Abu Ghurayb prison in early to mid-October using an unspecified number of mortars and car bombs…. AQIZ elements allegedly planned to use 20 “chemical munitions” brought from Syria.

4.      28th January 2006:  The ten are chemical weapons specialists and came to Iraq to support the chemical weapons operations of Hizballah Islam I. (Field comment — The chemical operations of Hizballah Islam I were previously reported as Al Qa’ida Iraq operations, the ten unidentified men are chemical weapons specialists from Syria)…The ten unidentified men were taken to Is’Hagey Iraq, where the unidentified chemicals weapons … are stored. The chemical weapons were brought from Syria to Iraq on 21 January 2006.

5.      29th December 2006:  As of 27 December 2006, three unidentified Bedouins who were alleged Iraq AQI Operatives planned to transport chemical munitions from Al Judayda, Saudi Arabia, to Nugra Al Salman District, a border area in Al Muthanna Province, Iraq …Subsequently, Iraq AQI operatives planned use the munitions to attack hospitals, outdoor markets, and US military forces in Al Basrah, Al Amarah and An Nasiriyah on or after 15 January 2007.

6.      5th March 2007:  AQI insurgency group is planning a rocket attack on several targets in the Baghdad International Zone and a US base in Al Rashdiyah by using Katusha rockets filled with unknown chemicals… these rockets were described as being three meters long and are modified in order to carry the extra weight. (Field Comment – the source was unable to provide the type of chemical and stated that these rockets probably originated from Iran).

7.      20th September 2007:  As of late September 2007, Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) militants in Mosul, Iraq were planning an imminent attack on Tall ‘Afar using rockets with Chlorine gas or another chemical compound … The rockets had a range of more than 20 Kilometers, and an impact radius of 50 to 100 square meters. (Comment: the Arabic word “Sarukh” was used to describe the rockets).

IRAQ WAR LOGS – REALITY VERSION

Let’s take a moment and examine these “Wikileak” reports that now are cited as vindicating President Bush, cited by many as reason for war on Iraq.  Is there anything in them that would, perhaps, make them less than credible and even “sexed up” like the documents the Chilcott Inquiry is looking into now?

Taken from the above reports, we find the following curious uses of “weasel words.”  June 10, 2006, we have “insurgents” but we know nothing but they are ‘planning” something they have “tried”but never done since, well, when did all this start?  1990?  30 years?

Then we are testing “rounds” we found on the ground somewhere.  We test them twice.  They are contaminated.  Surprise, surprise.  With areas of Iraq testing as having radiation levels 38 times higher than Hiroshima after a nuclear attack, it takes two tests to find “contamination.  It gets even better, we move to January 28, 2006 and now manage to tie, not only Hizbollah and Iran but Syria as well, chemical weapons brought from Syria, to Iraq and stored but never used, never found.  This is the purest form of “sexed up” phony intelligence, totally imaginary, Bush era baloney resurrected by Julian Assange.  Nobody listened then but repackaged as a Wikileak, these hollow fabrications are now taken by some Journalists as “hard fact.”

On December 29, it gets better.  Our informants are three unidentified Bedouins who were “alleged.”  OK, we have to stop there, we have two weasel words in one sentence.  We have added another country to the Wikileaks “axis of evil,” Saudi Arabia.  The embarrassing disclosures of the recent Wiki-dump, not only discredit the Saudi’s, showing them as allies of Israel, but might they also discredit this “Wikileaked” report as well?

March 5, more of the same.  I feel like I am with Napoleon, walking back from Moscow in the snow, barefoot and hungry.  This “Wikileak” tells us that rockets have “unknown chemicals,” weasel word number one and that they “probably” come from Iran.  DONG! The “two weasel words in one sentence” bell has run again.  My lunch contains unknown chemicals, “probably” from Iran.

Who wrote these reports?  None of the incidents warned of ever happened.  Some of the reports came from “private contractors” who were illegally tasked, according to the Department of Defense sources.  “Private contractors” means “rent-a-cops.”

“Go ask those three guys with the camel if they know of any rockets from Iran that are carrying chlorine gas made in Saudi Arabia.  While you are over there, get me some advice on my 401k, I am taking a beating in the bond market.”

WIKI-MECHANICS, VINDICATING BUSH OUT OF THIN AIR

US Army intelligence officers who authored some of the reports in Wikileaks reviewed their own work.  They indicated that reports were missing, incomplete, some with major changes and many significantly altered.

Wikileaks didn’t write the article vindicating Bush, it only supplied, as Zbigniew Brzezinski call it, “pointed leaks seeded by an intelligence agency to serve a private agenda.”  Our sources show those leaks, not only “seeded” but also falsified.  This is how the Wikileaks story finishes and finally proves that Bush was right all along, how Wikileaks smashes, once and for all, everyone opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that have killed untold numbers.  From Larry Elder and his “Wikileak” article;

“The Associated Press called yellowcake “the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment” and said that it “also can be enriched for use in reactors and, at higher levels, nuclear weapons using sophisticated equipment.”

DONG! We just hit the “weasel word” jackpot of all time.  Lets count them:

  1. “seed material”  You could possibly, sort of, maybe, under some circumstances make something out of this that could hurt someone if enough of it fell on them.

  2. “higher grade”  Weapons use 95% enriched uranium.  Yellow cake is a form of processed ore.  You can buy “yellow cake” for under $10 a pound (market price).  By US Army standards for radiation harards, “yellow cake” could be used as a food additive.

  3. “also can be”  Read “was not.”

  4. “at higher levels”  Read “were not”

  5. “using sophisticated equipment”  Read “that did not”…..exist.

VINDICATION DOWN THE WIKI-ROAD, THE SLIPPERY SLOPE, AROUND “DEAD MAN’S CURVE” AND OVER THE CLIFF….

Larry Elder found what he wanted in Wikileaks.  He wanted to save the tarnished reputation of George “W” Bush and Wikileaks was there.  When Benjamin Netanyahu is accused of being a “genocidal war monger,” Wikileaks is to his rescue too.  This is what Julian Assange had to say about Netanyahu as reported in the Israeli paper, Haaretz:

“Haaretz – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Wednesday defended his disclosure of classified U.S. documents by singling out Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an example of a world leader who believes the publications will aid global diplomacy.

“We can see the Israeli Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu coming out with a very interesting statement that leaders should speak in public like they do in private whenever they can,” Assange told Time Magazine in an interview on Wednesday, days after his online whistleblower published thousands of secret diplomatic cables.

“He believes that the result of this publication, which makes the sentiments of many privately held beliefs public, are promising a pretty good [indecipherable] will lead to some kind of increase in the peace process in the Middle East and particularly in relation to Iran,” Assange said.

“I just noticed today Iran has agreed to nuclear talks. Maybe that’s coincidence or maybe it’s coming out of this process, but it’s certainly not being canceled by this process,” he added.”

Many journalists have been unable to find this quote, particularly after stories tying Assange to meetings with Israeli officials in Geneva.  Many, ignoring the experts, ignoring hard evidence, keep hanging onto the Assange myth, looking for ways to serve a personal agenda or revealing dark truths about their own allegiances.   The simple revelations in the Israeli press alone, should have been enough to warn the responsible members of the press they were being duped.  Haaretz, an Israeli paper, make the accusations clear and shows how strongly were supported 8 days ago.

TURKEY “OUTS” WIKILEAKS DECEMBER 2

Haaretz also states:

“Also Wednesday, a senior Turkish official blamed Israel for the WikiLeaks release.  Addressing reporters, Huseyin Celik, deputy leader of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP party, hinted that Israel engineered the leak of hundreds of thousands of United States diplomatic cables as a plot to pressure the Turkish government.

“One has to look at which countries are pleased with these,” Celik was quoted as saying. ‘Israel is very pleased. Israel has been making statements for days, even before the release of these documents.’ Documents were released and they immediately said, ‘Israel will not suffer from this. ‘How did they know that?‘ Celik asked.”

SABROSKY OUTS WIKILEAKS

This is directly from a December 2, 2010 article in Haaretz, one of Israel’s largest newspapers, yet journalists around the world, not just Larry Elder, are investigating these charges that come from, not only Turkey but top American officials like Brzezinski or investigative journalists like Wayne Madsen or military experts like Dr. Alan Sabrosky;

“The one striking exception in all of this global tour de farce <sic.> is the Middle East. Certainly, even aside from Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s fulsome praise of Binyamin Netanyahu, what is said and what is not, represent the message Israel and its partisans in the US Government (itself heavily Zionist and “Israel First” in orientation) want the world to hear, believe and accept. The message coming across in the US diplomatic cables could have been designed and drafted by Avigdor Lieberman, and who knows? It may have been…

The other part of the covert theme is the apparent absence of anything tough on Israel, which means that anything of the sort is Top Secret or better, was excised from the cables that were released, or simply doesn’t matter at all to anyone in or out of the Middle East. The Arab nations for many years have feared a real nuclear threat from Israel, not a fabricated threat by Iran, but nothing like that comes across, despite 60-plus years of hostility from most to Israel and its ambitions.

Far more significant to me is the utter lack to date of scathing commentaries on Israel and its policies, leadership and actions from SOMEWHERE in the world. Even if Arab leaders felt there was no point in doing so with the Americans, most others would not feel so constrained. Something surely must have come to the attention of the US ambassadors to (e.g.) Turkey, South Africa, Brazil and Ireland, just to name a few of the many who have bitterly condemned Israel, and especially the disgusting duo of Netanyahu and Lieberman to say nothing of their predecessors, for what they have done to Palestine and the Lebanon; for Operation Cast Lead; for the settlements; for flagrant violations of UN Resolutions and the murder of UN officials; for Israel’s hostility to the Goldstone Report; for the blockade; for land expropriation; and for sheer thuggery and brutality.

But nothing like that is there, or at least has yet surfaced, which makes me increasingly inclined to see this as just another game of rhetorical smoke and mirrors, with a lot of real cables and real victims (like the poor US soldier who presumably gave Assange at least some of the cables), butwith many or most of the Middle East cables “cooked” if not fabricated outright.

So these, at least, are probably the handiwork of Israeli-Americans or just Israelis putting their own spin on things, included in a mass of otherwise legitimate cables as camouflage and for validation. An Australian news website concluded that “[the] WikiLeaks cables [are] the 9/11 of world diplomacy.” Too, too true – same source, different vehicle and venue, all helping pave the road to yet another needless war in Israel’s service, this time against Iran. The gods weep — but not, presumably, Yahweh.”

BILL ENGDAHL’S STARTLING TAKE ON WIKILEAKS

Germany author and journalist F. William Engdahl sees the hand of the Mossad’s partner organization, the CIA in Wikileaks that and the very real threat against the internet, which Wikileaks, with its “ham handed” theatrics seems to be inadvertently supporting?  Or is it inadvertent?  Engdahl on Wikileaks:

“The story on the surface makes for a script for a new Oliver Stone Hollywood thriller. A 39-year old Australian hacker holds the President of the United States and his State Department hostage to a gigantic cyber “leak,” unless the President leaves Julian Assange and his Wikileaks free to release hundreds of thousands of pages of sensitive US Government memos. A closer look at the details, so far carefully leaked by the most ultra-establishment of international media such as the New York Times, reveals a clear agenda. That agenda coincidentally serves to buttress the agenda of US geopolitics around the world from Iran to Russia to North Korea.

“Wikileaks is a big and dangerous US intelligence Con Job which will likely be used to police the Internet”….F. William Engdahl

But for anyone who has studied the craft of intelligence and of disinformation, a clear pattern emerges in the Wikileaks drama. The focus is put on select US geopolitical targets, appearing as Hillary Clinton put it ‘to justify US sanctions against Iran.’ They claim North Korea with China’s granting of free passage to Korean ships despite US State Department pleas, send dangerous missiles to Iran. Saudi Arabia’s ailing King Abdullah reportedly called Iran’s President a Hitler.”

WIKILEAKS CITED BY FBI EXPERT AS PSYOP TARGETING THE UNITED STATES

Deborah Dupre in The Examiner, wrote on FBI whistleblower, Bob Levin’s impressions of Wikileaks;

“An FBI whistleblower has alerted that supporting WikiLeaks founder, Julius Assange and subsequently calling for revolution due to government cover-ups are intended results of a counterintelligence reverse tactic not in best interest of the public.

The recent operation on Somali and Nicaraguan youths that psychologically herded them into acts of terrorism need be a warning to Americans about PSYOPS master-minded so that innocent people are roped into actions against their best interest according to Levin.  “I’ve trained agents to do this against criminal targets, but as we know, these agencies have increasingly been politicized like the Gestapo,” he stated.

Bob Levin, FBI targeted whistleblower since 2000, knows sophisticated counterintelligence tactics designed to manipulate the unwitting.  Levin has lectured Special Agents in Training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He has been requested to brief Counterterrorism Taskforce Agents relating to his skill sets and investigative techniques.  ‘My background was in codes and local, specialized state and federal law enforcement that ended in the FBI,’ Levin wrote to this writer in an email.

On December 8, Levin distributed an emailed alert using the following example posted by a WikiLeaks supporter:

‘People NEED to be supporting Julian Assange through this ridiculous time. What a brave man for sharing the truth with the world. The governments of the world are just digging themselves a hole. IT’S TIME FOR A REVOLUTION!!!”  Levin’s email warned about “FBI, CIA and NSA counterintelligence reverse tactics used to bait passionate persons into an actionable trap.’”

One can only praise Larry Elder.  Who could have discredited Wikileaks as thoroughly?  How many forgot the sins of earlier Wikileaks?  Dr. Sabrosky gets it right when he says that Wikileaks look like they “could have been designed and drafted by Avigdor Lieberman, and…may have been…”

9/11: EXPLOSIVE EVIDENCE-EXPERTS SPEAK OUT

NOVANEWS

December 10, 2010

by Dr. Ashraf Ezzat

As time goes by, half baked solutions and false beliefs tend to get subconsciously entrenched in our collective mind as true facts.

WTC Building #7, a 47-story steel frame building not hit by an airplane, exhibited all the characteristics of classic controlled demolition with explosives

9/11 is definitely a turning point in the modern history of East and West and stands as a landmark at the beginning of the third millennium.

The world has noticeably changed since 9/11.

New enemies have emerged, new coalitions have been formed, and new wars have been waged.

New thinking has been embraced, namely the conflict between civilizations.

New policy has been adopted, namely creating a new world order.

New war have been launched, namely the war on terrorism

The world has been slowly evolving and heading towards new crusades. The history of the crusades is the history of medieval sheer foolishness and futility. It took the European crusaders almost two hundred years to figure out that they were fighting the wrong war, how long will it take the American and the international forces to figure out that they have been engaged in a false flag war.

The official story of 9/11 held al Qaeda responsible for the deadly attacks. Consequently, America has launched a perpetual war on terrorism and in doing so she invented a phantom enemy and even gave it a name that never existed before 9/11.

… One of the most perplexing sides of 9/11 is that the official story of who did it and how it was pulled doesn’t make sense to a lot of people who couldn’t buy into a story full of discrepancies and unanswered questions and couldn`t join the majority of people who found comfort in the simple official story and easily subscribed to the growing anti-Muslim discourse.

Many 9/11 conspiracy theories have been issued like the one which concluded that the Pentagon was hit by a missile- and not a plane- launched from inside the United States.

The strongest theory so far has been the one linked to the World Trade Center building #7- WTC7- that collapsed like a house of cards into its basement at free fall speed of 6.5 seconds.

But lately scientists and highly trained specialists have delved into the narrative of the weird collapse of WTC7 and they managed to scientifically refute the official and FEMA story and in doing so they somehow unleashed new insights into the 9/11 mystery and fortified the theory which claims that the WTC collapsed due to controlled demolition.

One of the first scientists who did research and analysis on samples of 9/11Ground Zero rubble was Neils Harrit, professor of chemistry at Copenhagen University.

According to a newly published scientific article, Neils Harrit and other eight researchers found Nano-Thermiteexplosive in the rubble of WTC collapsed buildings that couldn’t have come from the planes. They believe large amounts of explosives were placed in the buildings in advance, they concluded that it was Nano-Thermite that caused these buildings to collapse.

Prof. Harrit`s research opened the door for other scientists-such as the American Chemical Engineer, Mark Basile -to do more research and try to find logical answers to otherwise a less cohesive narrative.

Engineers and Architects for 9/11 truth is One of the most dedicated and active civil groups that not only denounce the official 9/11 story but also call upon the American congress to launch a new and truly independent 9/11 investigation based on the newly revealed scientific researches and data relating to the collapse of the world trade center towers.

The group encourages their members of architects, scientists and engineers to take an active role by reporting the results of their research on 9/11 by means of lectures, articles, and other modes of responsible public education.

One of their upcoming events is a documentary called “9/11: Explosive Evidence – Experts Speak Out” showing interviews with different architects,engineers- specialized in high-rise steel frame buildings- and chemists.

When scientists provide clear cut scientific evidences to the controlled demolition of WTC, the theory automatically moves from the conspiracy category to the scientific department where solid evidences create doubt no more.

As time goes by, half baked solutions and false beliefs tend to get subconsciously entrenched in our collective mind as true facts.

When experts speak out they tend to shed more light and clarity on our obscure interpretation of 9/11 and hopefully invite more people to rethink it and even join the call for a true and independent investigation of what really happened on September, 11, 2001.

We don`t have to linger for another 200 years before we’ve finally grasped the truth about 9/11

WIKILEAKS: A BIG DANGEROUS US GOVERNMENT CON JOB

NOVANEWS

December 10, 2010

by Debbie Menon

For anyone who has studied the craft of intelligence and of disinformation, a clear pattern emerges in the Wikileaks drama.

The focus is put on select US geopolitical targets, appearing as Hillary Clinton put it “to justify US sanctions against Iran.”

By F. William Engdahl

The story on the surface makes for a script for a new Oliver Stone Hollywood thriller.

The Wikileaks is a big and dangerous US intelligence Con Job which will likely be used to police the Internet.

Bradley Manning

It is almost too perfectly-scripted to be true. A discontented 22-year old US Army soldier on duty in Baghdad, Bradley Manning, a low-grade US Army intelligence analyst, described as a loner, a gay in the military, a disgruntled “computer geek,” sifts through classified information at Forward Operating Base Hammer. He decides to secretly download US State Department email communications from the entire world over a period of eight months for hours a day, onto his blank CDs while pretending to be listening to Lady Gaga. In addition to diplomatic cables, Manning is believed to have provided WikiLeaks with helicopter gun camera video of an errant US attack in Baghdad on unarmed journalists, and with war logs from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Manning then is supposed to have tracked down a notorious former US computer hacker to get his 250,000 pages of classified US State Department cables out in the Internet for the whole world to see. He allegedly told the US hacker that the documents he had contained “incredible, awful things that belonged in the public domain and not on some server stored in a dark room in Washington, DC.” The hacker turned him in to US authorities so the story goes. Manning is now incommunicado since months in US military confinement so we cannot ask him, conveniently. The Pentagon routinely hires the best hackers to design their security systems.

Then the plot thickens. The 250,000 pages end up at the desk of Julian Assange, the 39-year-old Australian founder of a supposedly anti-establishment website with the cute name Wikileaks. Assange decides to selectively choose several of the world’s most ultra-establishment news media to exclusively handle the leaking job for him as he seems to be on the run from Interpol, not for leaking classified information, but for allegedly having consensual sex with two Swedish women who later decided it was rape.

He selects as exclusive newspapers to decide what is to be leaked the New York Times,  which did such service in promoting faked propaganda against Saddam that led to the Iraqi war, the LondonGuardian, Der Spiegel.  Assange claims he had no time to sift through so many pages so handed them to the trusted editors of the establishment media for them to decide what should be released. Very “anti-establishment” that. The New York Times even assigned one of its top people, David E. Sanger, to control the release of the Wikileaks material. Sanger is no establishment outsider.

He sits as a member of the elite Council on Foreign Relations as well as the Aspen Institute Strategy Group together with the likes of Condi Rice, former Defense Secretary William Perry, former CIA head John Deutch, former State Department Deputy Secretary and now World Bank head Robert Zoellick among others.  Indeed a strange choice of media for a person who claims to be anti-establishment. But then Assange also says he believes the US Government version of 9/11 and calls the Bilderberg Group a normal meeting of people, a very establishment view.

Not so secret cables…

The latest sensational Wikileaks documents allegedly from the US State Department embassies around the world to Washington are definitely not as Hillary Clinton claimed “an attack on America’s foreign policy interests that have endangered innocent people.” And they do not amount to what the Italian foreign minister, called the “September 11 of world diplomacy.” The British government calls them a threat to national security and an aide to Canada’s Prime Minister calls on the CIA to assassinate Assange, as does kooky would-be US Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin.

Most important, the 250,000 cables are not “top secret” as we might have thought. Between two and three million US Government employees are cleared to see this level of “secret” document,[1] and some 500,000 people around the world have access to the Secret Internet Protocol Network (SIPRnet) where the cables were stored. Siprnet is not recommended for distribution of top-secret information. Only 6% or 15,000 pages of the documents have been classified as even secret, a level below top-secret. Another 40% were the lowest level, “confidential”, while the rest were unclassified. In brief, it was not all that secret.[2]

Most of the revelations so far have been unspectacular. In Germany the revelations led to the removal of a prominent young FDP politician close to Guido Westerwelle who apparently liked to talk too much to his counterpart at the US Embassy. The revelations about Russian politics, that a US Embassy official refers to Putin and Medvedev as “Batman and Robin,” tells more about the cultural level of current US State Department personnel than it does about internal Russian politics.

But for anyone who has studied the craft of intelligence and of disinformation, a clear pattern emerges in the Wikileaks drama. The focus is put on select US geopolitical targets, appearing as Hillary Clinton put it “to justify US sanctions against Iran.” They claim North Korea with China’s granting of free passage to Korean ships despite US State Department pleas, send dangerous missiles to Iran. Saudi Arabia’s ailing King Abdullah reportedly called Iran’s President a Hitler.

Excuse to police the Internet?

What is emerging from all the sound and Wikileaks fury in Washington is that the entire scandal is serving to advance a long-standing Obama and Bush agenda of policing the until-now free Internet. Already the US Government has shut the Wikileaks server in the United States though no identifiable US law has been broken.

The process of policing the Web was well underway before the current leaks scandal. In 2009 Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller and Republican Olympia Snowe introduced the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (S.773). It would give the President unlimited power to disconnect private-sector computers from the internet. The bill “would allow the president to ‘declare a cyber-security emergency’ relating to ‘non-governmental’ computer networks and do what’s necessary to respond to the threat.” We can expect that now this controversial piece of legislation will get top priority when a new Republican House and the Senate convene in January.

The US Department of Homeland Security, an agency created in the political hysteria following 9/11 2001 that has been compared to the Gestapo, has already begun policing the Internet. They are quietly seizing and shutting down internet websites (web domains) without due process or a proper trial. DHS simply seizes web domains that it wants to and posts an ominous “Department of Justice” logo on the web site.

See an example at http://torrent-finder.com. Over 75 websites were seized and shut in a recent week. Right now, their focus is websites that they claim “violate copyrights,” yet the torrent-finder.com website that was seized by DHS contained no copyrighted content whatsoever. It was merely a search engine website that linked to destinations where people could access copyrighted content.

Step by careful step freedom of speech can be taken away. Then what?

AND WHAT WILL SANTA BRING THE KIDDIES OF GAZA?

NOVANEWS

December 9, 2010

by Stuart Littlewood

… a long-overdue Christmas present for the imprisoned Christians and Muslims alike from a heroic Santa.

Fanciful thinking? Of course, given the international community’s spineless leaders.

Fakenham, in Norfolk,Christmas Tree Festival

Rarely do I enter a church unless it’s to admire the medieval architecture, a soaring testament to man’s faith in a more dangerous and uncertain age.

One reason being that church leaders, by and large, ignore the fate of the Holy Land, which of course underpins the whole structure of their faith.  The performance of our bishops, who have a voice in the House of Lords but never use it, is beyond pathetic.

However, every year at this time I make a point of visiting the parish church in the small market town of Fakenham, in Norfolk, to enjoy their dazzling Christmas Tree Festival. The event has been going for 10 years and this year raised money for 78 local and national charities.

Each charity decorates a tree supplied by one of the festival’s sponsors, a local garden centre, and under each tree is a collection box. The trees are displayed in the church for a week, then taken down in time to be used to good effect somewhere else in the run-up to Christmas. Last year 25,000 people visited the magical festival. This year the church was crowded and the admiring chatter was accompanied by a continual chink-chink of money falling into the boxes.

The charities taking part ranged from the Gurkha Welfare Trust and the East Anglican Air Ambulance to Chernobyl Children and numerous local nursery schools. Prayers are said every hour for the charities in turn. As usual I looked around hopefully for an appeal on behalf of the children of the brutally occupied Holy Land – and especially Gaza – who are always on my mind as Christmas approaches.

But no luck.

People are at their most generous about now, and there’s perhaps an opening here for those who work to alleviate the awful suffering of young and old living amid the wreckage of homes and infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. The rector at Fakenham believes his church more or less pioneered the tree festival but he’s aware that other churches are taking up the idea. Are any of the UK’s 1500 mosques doing it? Is there an opportunity for inter-faith joint working?

I phoned the Islamic centre in the two nearest cities several times but they don’t answer. I left voice and email messages but no-one got back to me. So much for their front-line communication…

Last Christmas I wrote that our then prime minister, Gordon Brown, wished the Jewish community a happy Chanuka from Number10.gov.uk and recalled how he celebrated Israel’s 60th birthday with them.

But he had no festive greeting for the shivering and shattered Gazans who had been bombed and blasted by his ‘friends’ during their Christmas festival. And no word of cheer, either, for the Christian communities in Gaza and the West Bank endlessly persecuted by the Israelis.

One presumes that Brown, a staunch ally of Israel, knew about the hell that his friends were about to inflict on Gaza during the Christmas celebrations of 2008/9, just as Mr Abbas did according to leaked US cables. Christians living in the Strip were certainly aware of the invasion threat and abandoned plans to celebrate the midnight Christmas mass in protest. But they couldn’t have imagined the enormity of the devastation and slaughter that was about to be unleashed on them and their children while Western leaders stayed shtum.

And Brown is the son of a Church of Scotland minister.

Many of the 1.5 million people packed into the ravaged Strip, I hear, have had to scavenge through rubbish tips for food to survive.

So what sort of Christmas is in store for their little ones this year while the criminals who inflicted such savagery and torment, and continue to deny them their human rights, have their snouts in the Yuletide trough and enjoy a warm bed?

This year The Jewish Chronicle reports that David Cameron, our new prime minister, has wished the Jewish community around the world “a happy and peaceful Chanukah”.

He called the story of Chanukah “an inspiring message of the power of hope to sustain people through the toughest of times”.

From his echo-chamber Foreign Secretary William Hague, in a Chanukah video message, added: “It’s a great pleasure to send warm good wishes to the Jewish community in Britain and all over the world.”

I wonder if either of them will have the good grace to send similar messages of hope to sustain the good people of Gaza “through the toughest of times”.

The UN says that imports are only at 36 per cent of pre-siege levels, thanks to Cameron’s friends, and exports are still not allowed (except a few strawberries), so the hardship must still be unimaginable.

Last week, here in England, we were treated to the spectacle of the Royal Navy’s flagship, the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, returning to her home port for the last time, to be de-commissioned and turned into a museum or tourist attraction – or sold for scrap – after only 25 years’ service. The original Ark Royal was Lord Howard’s flagship in the naval actions to beat off the Spanish Armada’s invasion force in those swashbuckling days of 1588.

Fighting for freedom, you see.

A pity the present Ark Royal couldn’t have gone to her grave with a bang rather than a whimper… for example, by making a last voyage to the Eastern Med, perhaps with a multi-national crew, to bust the evil blockade and land supplies on Gaza’s beach… a long-overdue Christmas present for the imprisoned Christians and Muslims alike from a heroic Santa.

Fanciful thinking? Of course, given the international community’s spineless leaders.

OUT OF FAILURE, A CHANCE FOR JUSTICE FOR PALESTINE

NOVANEWS

by Prof. William A. Cook

Perhaps Crowley’s “change in tactics” means that the US will abandon its role as “negotiator” and do, as the British Government did in 1947, give the resolution for peace in the mid-east to the UN where it belongs since the UN carved the Mandated land into two states in Resolution 181.

by William A. Cook

Philip Crowley – U.S. State Department

Philip Crowley, speaking for the State Department, seemed to imply a new beginning for the US as it halted the peace negotiations it had started last May, when he noted there “may well be a change in tactics.” (Aljazeera.net “US Fails in settlements freeze bid: the US suspends efforts to persuade Israel on settlement building freeze” 12/8/2010.)

Perhaps Netanyahu’s bribery of billions of US dollars for 20 F-35 fighter planes at a time when Obama’s administration is trying to get Congress to extend unemployment benefits for 3 million Americans rankled the President;

– perhaps a forced written guarantee that the US would not interfere with future settlement construction while it continued its “unconditional support” for Israel as it confiscated more Palestinian land by using its veto in the Security Council pricked the President’s conscience as he realized that he was no longer in charge in his own administration;

– perhaps the President finally understood that America cannot be the broker for peace in Palestine because it is controlled by Israel, a decided unfair advantage for a negotiator that believes in justice; and maybe, just maybe, he recognized that after all these decades of “pretended peace talks between Israel and the PLO” the Zionist government never had any intention of bringing a Palestinian state into existence thus depriving the nations of the world their opportunity to confront Israel with true Justice in international courts.

Perhaps Crowley’s “change in tactics” means that the US will abandon its role as “negotiator” and do, as the British Government did in 1947, give the resolution for peace in the mid-east to the UN where it belongs since the UN carved the Mandated land into two states in Resolution 181.

Taking such action would reduce Obama’s humiliation at the hands of Netanyahu and his hound dog, Avigdor Lieberman; it would remove, in the eyes of the world communities, the pall of distrust and hatred that the US has earned as a lackey for the Zionist regimes since Sharon ruled Israel; and it would provide a sensible and real solution to the issues that have plagued the peace process: the security of Israel, the borders of a Palestinian state, the fate of the Palestinian refugees, and the status of Jerusalem.

How?

Since the UN has already defined the borders of Israel and Palestine in Resolution 181, modified in Resolution 242 and accepted at that time by both sides, the issues of borders can be determined by an impartial body appointed by the UNSC. It follows that Israel’s security can be assured if those borders are controlled by a UN Peace Keeping force that would monitor egress and ingress for both states. It follows also that the barriers that have been used by the Israelis to control the people of Palestine could be brought down as necessary to make the borders true state borders and not a prison wall.

Again, since the original formation of the two states by UN Resolution included an international status for Jerusalem, the condition of Jerusalem already exists as long as the UN takes control of the process. There remains only the problem of the refugees. International law determines the rights of the refugees, and hence, the action of the UN would have to be in conformity with that law. Various resolutions could be adopted including return to the Palestinian state as designed by 242, payments to the refugees in lieu of resettlement, and use of existing Israeli “settlements” for housing for refugees with adequate compensation provided for to Israel and the US. In short, with the international courts and the UN in charge, justice can finally prevail in Palestine.

Interestingly, just last month, Yuval Rabin, son of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, proposed an Israeli Peace Initiative, a joint venture with Koby Huberman a businessman and activist; the proposal is built on the following points:

  1. A viable Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders and one-on-one land swaps

  2. Jerusalem as the home of two capitals and special arrangements in the holy basin

  3. An agreed solution for the refugees inside the Palestinian state (with symbolic exceptions)

  4. Mutual recognition of the genuine national identities of the two states as the outcome of negotiations not as a prerequisite

  5. Reiteration of the principles underlying Israel’s 1948 declaration of independence regarding civic equality for its Arab citizens

  6. Long term security arrangements with international components. (Haaretz, 26.11.10)

Needless to say, this proposal makes it easy for Netanyahu to act in accordance with possible UN action since it would provide an Israeli resolution to offset criticism that he was capitulating to Obama’s decision to return the problem to the UN. Crowley’s understated comment that there “will be a change in tactics” just might be an announcement of justice at last for both Palestinians and Jews.

We need only look back to see the future. Time and conditions change but humankind remains the same. Greed and power are the sinews that bind minds indifferent to the havoc they wreak on the helpless and the weak; it’s time for the US to exit the broker’s role and give the peace process to the United Nations so that justice can at last prevail.

PALESTINE: INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHT DAY

NOVANEWS

A Message From Abdullah Abu Rahmah on International Human Rights
Day

A year ago tonight, on International Human Rights Day, our apartment
in Ramallah was broken into by the Israeli military in the middle of
the night and I was torn away from my wife Majida, my daughters Luma
and Layan, and my son Laith, who at the time was only nine months
old.

As the coordinator of the Bil’in Popular Committee against the Wall
and Settlements I was convicted of “organizing illegal demonstrations”
and “incitement.” The “illegal demonstrations” refer to the nonviolent
resistance campaign that my village has been waging for the last six
years against Israel’s Apartheid Wall that is being built on our
land.

I find it strange that the military judges could call our
demonstrations illegal and charge me for participating in and
organizing them after the world’s highest legal body, the
International Court of Justice in The Hague, has ruled that Israel’s
wall within the occupied territories is illegal and must be
dismantled. Even the Israeli supreme court ruled that the Wall’s route
in Bil’in is illegal.

I have been accused of inciting violence: this charge is also
puzzling. If the check points, closures, ongoing land theft, wall and
settlements, night raids into our homes and violent oppression of our
protests does not incite violence, what does?

Despite the occupations constant and intense incitement to violence in
Bil’in, we have chosen another way. We have chosen to protest
nonviolently together with Israeli and International supporters. We
have chosen to carry a message of hope and real partnership between
Palestinians and Israelis in the face of oppression and injustice. It
is this message that the Occupation is attempting to crush through its
various institutions including the military courts. An official from
the Israeli Military Prosecution shamelessly told my Attorney, Gaby
Lasky, that the objective of the military in my prosecution is to “put
an end” to these demonstrations.

The crime of incitement that I have been convicted of is defined under
Israeli military decree 101 regarding the prohibition of hostile
action of propaganda and incitement as “The attempt, verbally or
otherwise, to influence public opinion in the Area in a way that may
disturb the public peace or public order” and carries a 10 year
maximal sentence. This definition is so broad and vague that it can be
applied to almost any action or statement. Actually, these words
could be considered incitement if they were spoken in the occupied
territories.

On the 11th of October of this year I was sentenced to 12 months in
prison, plus 6 months suspended sentence for 3 years, and a fine. My
family and I, especially my daughters, were counting the days to my
release. The military prosecution waited until just a few days before
the end of my sentence before appealing against my release, arguing
that I should be imprisoned longer. I have completed my sentence but
remain in prison. Though international law considers myself and other
activists as human rights defenders, the occupation authorities
consider us criminals whose freedom and other rights must be denied.
In the year that I have spent in prison, the demonstrations in Bil’in,
Naalin, Al Maasara, and Beit Omar have continued. Nabi Saleh and other
villages have taken up the popular struggle. Within this year, the
International campaign calling for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions of
Israel until it complies with International law has grown
considerably, as have legal actions against Israeli war crimes. I hope
that soon Israel will no longer be able to ignore the clear
condemnation of its policies coming from around the world.

In the year that I have spent in prison, my son Laith has taken his
first steps and said his first words, and Luma and Layan have been
growing from children to beautiful young girls. I have not been able
to be with them, to walk holding their hands, to take them to school
as they and I are used to. Laith does not know me now. And my wife
Majida has had to care for our family alone.

In 2010 children in Bil’in and throughout the West bank are still
being awakened in the middle of the night to find guns pointed at
their heads. In the year that I have spent in prison, the military has
carried out dozens of night raids in Bil’in with the purpose of
removing those involved in the popular struggle against the
occupation.

Imagine if heavily armed men forced their way into your home in the
middle of the night. If your children were forced to watch as their
father or brother was blindfolded, handcuffed, and taken away. Or if
you as a parent were forced to watch this being done to your child.

This week the door of our cell was opened and a sixteen year boy was
pushed inside. My friend Adeeb Abu Rahmeh was shocked to recognize his
son, Mohammed, whom Adeeb had not seen since he himself was arrested
during a nonviolent demonstration 16 months ago.

Mohammad smiled when he saw his Father, but his face was red and
swollen and it was clear that he was in pain. He told us that he had
been taken from his home two nights previously. He spent the first
night blindfolded and shackled, being moved from one place to another.
The next day after a terrifying, disoriented, and sleepless night he
was taken to an interrogation room, his blindfold was removed and an
interrogator showed him pictures of people from the village. When
questioned about the first picture he told the interrogator that he
did not recognize the person. The interrogator slapped him hard across
the face. This continued with every question that Mohammad was asked:
when he did not give the answer that the interrogator wanted, he was
slapped, punched and threatened. Mohammad’s treatment is not
unusual.

Young boys from our village have been taken from their homes violently
and report being denied sleep, food, and water and being kept in
Isolation and threatened and often beaten during interrogation.

What was unusual about Mohammad is that he did not satisfy his
interrogator and with competent representation was released within a
few days. Usually children, just because they are children, will say
whatever the interrogator wants them to say to make such treatment
stop. Adeeb, myself, and thousands of other prisoners are being held
in prison based on testimonies forced or coerced out of these
children. No child should ever receive such treatment.

When the children who had testified against me retracted what they
said in interrogation and told the military judge that their
testimonies where given under duress, the judge declared them hostile
witnesses.

Adeeb Abu Rahmah and I are the first to be convicted with incitement
and participation in illegal demonstrations since the first Intifada
but, unfortunately, it does not seem that we will be the last.

I often wonder what Israeli leaders think they will achieve if they
succeed in their goal of suppressing the Palestinian popular struggle?
Is it possible that they believe that our people can sit quietly and
watch as our land is taken from us? Do they think that we can face
our children and tell them that, like us, they will never experience
freedom? Or do they actually prefer violence and killing to our form
of nonviolent struggle because it camouflages their ongoing theft and
gives them an excuse to continue using us as guinea pigs for their
weapons?

My eldest daughter Luma was nine years old when I was arrested. She is
now ten. After my arrest she began going to the Friday demonstrations
in our village. She always carries a picture of me in her arms. The
adults try to look after her but I still worry for my little girl. I
wish that she could enjoy her childhood like other children, that she
could be studying and playing with her friends. But through the walls
and barbed wire that separates us I hear my daughter’s message to me,
saying: “Baba, they cannot stop us. If they take you away, we will
take your place and continue to struggle for justice.” This is the
message that I want to bring you today. From beyond the walls, the
barbed wire, and the prison bars that separate Palestinians and
Israelis

MINDSET WARFAR

NOVANEWS

December 7, 2010

by Jeff Gates

The U.S. is slipping into a debt-induced recession from which we’re assured that more debt is the remedy.

Only when Americans grasp the internalized source of this subtle warfare can we prevail over this enemy within.

At the close of World War II, the U.S. was home to 50% of the world’s productive power. That economic strength assured America’s dominant financial position for at least two decades. That strength included the ability to issue the world’s top-rated bonds.

Look at us now.

The financial cost to the U.S. of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is projected to top $3 trillion-all of it borrowed. The interest expense alone could reach $700 billion.

The U.S. Congress is debating whether to authorize the borrowing of $700 billion to extend Bush-era tax cuts for another decade.

At this pace, annual interest payments on the debt could top $1 trillion by 2020. In 1980, the total federal debt was $900 billion.

The greater the debt, the greater the Wall Street skim. Bond traders don’t care whether markets rise or fall. So long as markets move, they make money.

Thus the financial appeal of warfare, a proven debt creator. Likewise the allure of crises and even perceived crises as either will move financial markets. Thus too the tragic logic of warfare-from the creditor’s perspective.

Funds lent for war generate output that does not compete with other goods and services. It was not the New Deal but WWII that put America back to work and ended the Great Depression.

Thus the recent appeal by veteran Washington Post columnist David Broder when he proposed war with Iran as a strategy for reviving the U.S. economy.

Governed By Debt

As the strongest currency of the post-WWII era, the U.S. dollar was destined to emerge as the dominant reserve currency for global trade. That result was fully foreseeable by those sophisticated in trade and finance.

America’s productive might ensured that U.S. bonds would set the standard for debt as a safe financial security. In 1971, our creation of debt was unleashed from physical limits when we abandoned precious metals as security for the dollar.

Within the decade, a purported fiscal conservative (Ronald Reagan) championed an investment stimulus that was projected to expand the federal debt by $872 billon at a time when total securitized debt was $900 billion

Known as “supply-side” economics, this deficit-financed subsidy set off a frenzy of debt that fueled leveraged buyouts (LBOs), the leveraging of savings and loans, the overvaluation of dotcom companies and, most recently, the subprime mortgage meltdown.

By 2008, combined private and public debt topped $50 trillion plus another $50 trillion in unfunded liabilities. While LBO artisans leveraged private sector balance sheets, specialists in public debt turned to politics to leverage the nation’s fiscal balance sheet.

With trust by then the primary collateral for U.S. debt, America’s credibility became a strategic vulnerability. With our ‘full faith and credit’ in the crosshairs of transnational financial sophisticates, the U.S. soon became financially ungovernable.

With American IOUs now growing at $100 billion per month secured by a sputtering economy growing at $50 billion per month, that faith is faltering and our credit crumbling.

Self-Correcting Systems?

The source of this threat is difficult to see because the weaponry deployed is the shared mindset with which we’ve been seduced to do our seeing.

At the risk of over-simplification, the mindset is this: money is smarter than people. Just let money to do what money does best and stand aside.

No need to worry about trade deficits that the U.S. amassed with China. According to Nobel Prize economist Milton Friedman, those imbalances will “self correct.”

The same mindset rationalized the sustained loosening of credit by Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan. While enabling and praising what he called “financial creativity,” he assured Americans that capital markets would “self correct” any imbalances.

How did this deceit succeed? How was self-governance displaced by a money-myopic mindset touted as self-correcting?

America was seduced by an education curriculum in which this narrow viewpoint was imbedded. Then we were induced to comply by policies granting this mindset the force of law. To financial sophisticates, the results were foreseeable.

Finance: The One True Faith

China is now recycling U.S. purchasing power to build a world-class navy, nurture allies and invest in commodities. Meanwhile we Americans hold steadfast to our faith in financial securities.

This mindset is now branded globally as the U.S.-discrediting “Washington” consensus as the World Bank Group (led by an American since 1946) insisted that emerging economies embrace a worldview that has served us poorly and them worse.

With deference granted the creditor, debtors must adjust-no matter what the cost. The greater the debt, the greater the creditor’s influence-and the greater the skim.

The U.S. is slipping into a debt-induced recession from which we’re assured that more debt is the remedy. Only when Americans grasp the internalized source of this subtle warfare can we prevail over this enemy within.

WIKILEAKS REPRISED, A WHIFF OF WHAT?

NOVANEWS

December 7, 2010

by Dr. Alan Sabrosky

From what the press is reporting about this Wikileaks “dump,” perhaps 10% are Secret or Confidential, the rest Unclassified, and nothing is Top Secret or above

I have followed the unfolding teapot-tempest drama of the latest Wikileaks release with a certain bemusement, accompanied by a growing suspicion shared with others that all is not as it seems with these supposed revelations.

But my initial impression, based of course on what I am reading in the mainstream and alternative media and not in the cables themselves, is that it is surprising how little damaging material is there about much of the world.

Secretary Clinton cannot be happy at having the UN people know what she told her people there to do, of course, and there is a great deal to whet assorted salacious appetites. More substantive issues will doubtless emerge, but I expect most if not all to be embarrassing rather than destructive.

The Cables

Perhaps the principal reason for this largely titillating, trivial aspect of so many of the released cables is the cables themselves. It is worth understanding that in the US government, even material that is taken from newspapers and clipped together can end up being classified “Secret” or “Confidential.”  Really important or sensitive material (as in truly “national security” sensitive) is classified “Top Secret” or above.

From what the press is reporting about this Wikileaks “dump,” perhaps 10% are Secret or Confidential, the rest Unclassified, and nothing is Top Secret or above. This reflects the VERY low-level diplomatic “gossip column” character of much of what has been released and discussed in the media so far. But I suspect the general reaction of politicians and diplomats everywhere, all of whom send the same type of cables about others, will be a blend of public umbrage and private amusement, coupled with overtures to Ukraine for nursing support.

The Middle East Exception

The one striking exception in all of this global tour de farce <sic.> is the Middle East. It may have been….

The overt theme in the Middle East cables consists of a blend of attacks on prominent political figures in Turkey and Iran, coupled with critical and disparaging commentaries about their actual or alleged policies and ambitions. One might think that the architects of the Ottoman and Persian Empires in their times of splendor were simultaneously on the move again, with everything between them (except poor, brave, steadfast and enduring Israel, of course) trembling in fear and awe.

Complimenting this is a region-wide belief attributed to many Arab leaders of the need for stronger action, including military strikes, to thwart Iran’s regional and especially nuclear ambitions — precisely what Israel has been saying all along. Now, this may be true. I know, for example, that the Sunni leadership in many of those countries have their own concerns about Iran, just as Iran’s current leadership have with some of them.

But at least two things cause me to question this supposed thesis. One is the odd attribution in at least one of the cables to an Arab leader of a remark on Iran being an “existential threat.” Yet no one except Israel and its proponents refer to any other country as an “existential threat” to anyone, suggesting quite clearly that either some of the released cables regarding Iran are forgeries, or they were deliberately cast in terms to create an impression that Arab leaders really want the US and/or Israel to attack Iran, true or not.

And the Israeli Exception

Surely something so scathing would have been communicated back to Washington, alongside which Iran and its president would come off smelling like several bouquets of roses — slightly wilted roses, perhaps, but vastly better than the Israeli stinkpot.

Reprise

But nothing like that is there, or at least has yet surfaced, which makes me increasingly inclined to see this as just another game of rhetorical smoke and mirrors, with a lot of real cables and real victims (like the poor US soldier who presumably gave Assange at least some of the cables), but with many or most of the Middle East cables “cooked” if not fabricated outright.

The gods weep — but not, presumably, Yahweh.

A DISGRACE: BRITISH MINISTERS DISCREDIT RULE OF LAW

NOVANEWS

December 8, 2010

by Stuart Littlewood

The UK, Like All Other Countries That Think Themselves Civilized, is Under Obligation to Enact Legislation

If that is not done then double standards become very manifest;

Professor Richard Falk put it most eloquently:

“The idea of Nuremberg after World War Two was that crimes against the peace, crimes against humanity and war crimes are also offenses against the whole of international society…”

The law that was applied to surviving German criminals of World War Two would not be respected unless those who sat in judgment upheld it in relation to their own behavior.

The UN Special Rapporteur was speaking in London at a parliamentary briefing on Universal Jurisdiction, the principles of which the British government intends to undermine for the benefit of its Israeli friends.

“Universal jurisdiction is part of the struggle against impunity for the Israeli military and the country’s political leaders,” said Falk. “That impunity has been possible both because Israel itself doesn’t impose accountability on those who perpetrate violations of international criminal law and because the US, and to some extent European countries, have given a geopolitical insulation to Israel in relation to its responsibilities as a sovereign state.”

Judge Richard Goldstone – United Nations

The UN’s Goldstone report and the international law panel appointed after the Gaza flotilla incident also raised the issue of impunity and accountability. Falk feels that the most effective way of implementing international law is now through the activism of civil society and through national legal institutions.

Universal Jurisdiction is a good tool for the job. A private individual may apply to a magistrate for an arrest warrant if he has serious evidence. The Attorney General’s consent is needed for the prosecution to go ahead, but even if that consent is withheld the magistrate may still issue a warrant if he considers there are reasonable grounds for suspecting the war crime was committed and admissible evidence is presented which establishes this.

The beauty of the private warrant is that it can be issued speedily.

The bringing of a private prosecution for a criminal offense is an ancient right in common law and, in the words of Lord Wilberforce, “a valuable constitutional safeguard against inertia or partiality on the part of the authority.”

Lord Diplock, another respected Lord of Appeal, called it “a useful safeguard against capricious, corrupt or biased failure or refusal of those authorities to prosecute offenders against the criminal law”.

And that’s precisely what we’re up against – a capricious, corrupt and biased administration that wants to let ‘friendly’ war criminals off and protect them from arrest while they visit Britain. The government argues that foreign politicians, no matter how blood-soaked, should never be made to feel unwelcome and that the current law impedes Britain’s ability to use its diplomatic powers. In future the Director of Public Prosecutions will consider each application at the arrest warrant stage.

As protesters point out, this is a recipe for political interference and delay, which will enable suspects to slip away – the “inertia and partiality” Wilberforce warned about.

In short, the overriding principle that no-one, regardless of nationality, should feel able to commit war crimes with impunity, is being sacrificed so that the likes of Tzipi Livni, the former Israeli foreign minister who was responsible for launching the murderous assault on Gaza’s civilians nearly two years ago (an atrocity she was later reported to be proud of and happy to repeat), and other Israeli psychopaths need not fear arrest if they come here.

Meanwhile mountains of evidence of Israel’s war crimes are just waiting to be tested in court.

The UK, like all other countries that think themselves civilized, is under an obligation to enact legislation necessary to provide effective penal sanctions for grave breaches of the Geneva Convention. In other words, there should be no hiding place for the world’s vilest criminals.

But Britain’s heart isn’t in it. Thanks to Wikileaks, we now know that the Foreign Office colluded with America to circumvent our obligation under the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), which Britain signed along with 107 other countries. Leaked US embassy papers show that David Miliband, our previous foreign secretary, approved a ‘temporary exemption’ allowing the US to carry on storing cluster bombs offshore at Diego Garcia (a British territory) and transfer them onto US aircraft stationed on the island, hiding the arrangement from parliamentary scrutiny.

Wikileaks also revealed http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/dec/03/wikileaks-cables-us-special-relationshipthat Conservative party politicians lined up before the general election to promise they would run a “pro-American regime”.

Britain’s barmy army of ‘Israel-firsters’

Running a pro-American regime means running a pro-Israel regime, since American policy is dictated by the all-powerful pro-Israel lobby. Stephen Walt, whose book exposed it, told Al Jazeera in the run-up to the US elections: “Almost all of the major candidates are falling over themselves to demonstrate how deeply committed they are to America’s special relationship with Israel. Hardly a word of criticism is directed at anything Israel does and that is due to the activities of the lobby.”

John Mearsheimer, co-author of the book, said: “If you look at who is pushing the US to use military force against Iran, the two driving forces are Israel and the Israel lobby.”

In a series of private meetings with British Conservatives, leaked US cables tell how foreign secretary-in-waiting William Hague offered a “pro-American” government. Hague also said the entire Conservative leadership were, like him, “staunchly Atlanticist” and “children of Thatcher”. He said whoever enters 10 Downing Street as prime minister soon learns of the essential nature of the relationship with America. “We want a pro-American regime. We need it. The world needs it.”

The US diplomat Richard LeBaron commented: “The UK’s commitment of resources – financial, military, diplomatic – in support of US global priorities remains unparalleled.”

Hague is, in his own words, “a longstanding friend of Israel and someone who joined Conservative Friends of Israel at the age of 15″. He once said: “The unbroken thread of Conservative Party support for Israel that has run for nearly a century from the Balfour Declaration to the present day will continue.”

Liam Fox, now defence minister, was quoted on the Conservative Friends of Israel website as saying: “…We must remember that in the battle for the values that we stand for, for democracy against theocracy, for democratic liberal values against repression – Israel’s enemies are our enemies and this is a battle in which we all stand together or we will all fall divided.”

Fox, Hague and David Cameron were known for their subservience to Israel long before they took power. In 2006The Jewish Chronicle reported on the backers bankrolling David Cameron’s bid for power, providing a fascinating insight into how the pro-Israel lobby infiltrates government and destroys the principles of integrity and accountability so necessary in public life. When Cameron became Conservative leader he proclaimed: “The belief I have in Israel is indestructible – and you need to know that if I become Prime Minister, Israel has a friend who will never turn his back on Israel.”

CFI’s Parliamentary Chairman and Chairman of the Defence Select Committee,

James Arbuthnot, addressed the following remarks to Parliament praising Israel: “Everyone in this House should have an interest in Israel, because it is a country that embodies the values that we should stand for. Israel [has] become a bastion of the rule of law, democracy, free speech, business enterprise and family values. If that is not what this country also stands for, I am disappointed.”

Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel brazenly state that their first aim is “to maximise support for the State of Israel within the Liberal Democrats and Parliament”.

“You discredit the rule of law”

Our last foreign secretary, David Miliband, actually apologized to Tzipi Livni and Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman for the arrest warrant issued against Livni in London a year ago. He promised Lieberman to begin working immediately to change the UK laws.

But the general election overtook him. Miliband’s grovelling promise was echoed by his replacement, Hague, who announced: “We have had good discussions with Israeli ministers on Universal Jurisdiction where the last government left us with an appalling situation where a politician like Mrs Livni could be threatened with arrest on coming to the UK…” He said it was “completely unacceptable… We have agreed in the coalition about putting it right, we will put it right through legislation that will be introduced… The Justice Secretary will bring into the House of Commons adding to legislation going through the House of Commons later this year and I phoned Mrs Livni amongst others to tell her about that and received a very warm welcome for our proposals”.

At the same time he insulted the public’s intelligence by saying: “The UK is committed to upholding international justice and all of our international obligations. Our core principle remains that those guilty of war crimes must be brought to justice.”

During a recent trip to Israel Hague had the door slammed in his face by the petulant racist regime, canceling strategic talks in order to ratchet up the pressure.

Even the Zionists’ 63-year record of land thieving, piracy, ethnic cleansing, indiscriminate slaughter, mass abductions and imprisonment, torture, everyday terror and wholesale contempt for international law and human rights, isn’t enough to diminish the blind loyalty of our high-placed elected servants to the thugs of Tel Aviv.

In the fight to preserve Universal Jurisdiction and some semblance of honour, we can see how the odds are stacked. The corruption, bias and inertia the law lords warned of run deep. I leave the last word to Richard Falk, who makes the point that if a country like Britain, with its proud constitutional tradition, applies international criminal law only to those its leaders don’t like at the time – for example, Saddam Hussein or Slobodan Milosevic – “you discredit, in a fundamental way, the rule of law which really does depend on equals being treated equally.

“If that is not done then double standards become very manifest; it also has the effect of saying that geopolitics and foreign policy always trump the law.”

BUSTED!! WIKILEAKS STRUCK A DEAL WITH ISRAEL OVER CABLE LEAKS

December 8, 2010

by Gordon Duff

INDYMEDIA:  WikiLeaks ‘struck a deal with Israel’ over diplomatic cables leaks

“Assange met with Israeli officials in Geneva earlier this year and struck the secret deal. The Israel government, it seems, had somehow found out or expected that the documents to be leaked contained a large number of documents about the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Gaza in 2006 and 2008-9 respectively. These documents, which are said to have originated mainly from the Israeli embassies in Tel Aviv and Beirut, where removed and possibly destroyed by Assange, who is the only person who knows the password that can open these documents, the sources added.”

We should obviously all support WikiLeaks and its founder and spokesperson, Julian Assange, who has just been arrested in Britain, in this dirty war by states around the globe against transparency and openness. But in the world of politics, sadly, things are never as innocent as they appear. According to new revelations, Assange had allegedly struck a deal with Israel before the recent ‘cable gate’, which may explain why the leaks “were good for Israel,” as the Israeli prime minister put it.

A number of commentators, particularly in Turkey and Russia, have been wondering why the hundreds of thousands of American classified documents leaked by the website last month did not contain anything that may embarrass the Israeli government, like just about every other state referred to in the documents. The answer appears to be a secret deal struck between the WikiLeaks “heart and soul”, as Assange humbly described himself once [1], with Israeli officials, which ensured that all such documents were ‘removed’ before the rest were made public.

According to an Arabic investigative journalism website [2], Assange had received money from semi-official Israeli sources and promised them, in a “secret, video-recorded agreement,” not to publish any document that may harm Israeli security or diplomatic interests.

The sources of the Al-Haqiqa report are said to be former WikiLeaks volunteers who have left the organisation in the last few months over Assange’s “autocratic leadership” and “lack of transparency.”

In a recent interview with the German daily Die Tageszeitung, former WikiLeaks spokesperson Daniel Domscheit-Berg said he and other WikiLeaks dissidents are planning to launch their own whistleblowers’ platform to fulfil WikiLeaks’s original aim of “limitless file sharing.” [3]

Mr Domscheit-Berg, who is about to publish a book about his days ‘Inside WikiLeaks’, accuses Assange of acting as a “king” against the will of others in the organisation by “making deals” with media organisations that are meant to create an explosive effect, which others in WikiLeaks either know little or nothing about. [4]

Furthermore, Assange’s eagerness for headline-grabbing scoops meant that WikiLeaks had not been able to ‘restructure’ itself to cope with this surge of interest, insiders add. This has meant that smaller leaks, which might be of interest to people at a local level, are now being overlooked for the sake of big stories. [5]

According to the Al-Haqiqa sources, Assange met with Israeli officials in Geneva earlier this year and struck the secret deal. The Israel government, it seems, had somehow found out or expected that the documents to be leaked contained a large number of documents about the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Gaza in 2006 and 2008-9 respectively. These documents, which are said to have originated mainly from the Israeli embassies in Tel Aviv and Beirut, where removed and possibly destroyed by Assange, who is the only person who knows the password that can open these documents, the sources added.

Indeed, the published documents seem to have a ‘gap’ stretching over the period of July – September 2006, during which the 33-day Lebanon war took place. Is it possible that US diplomats and officials did not have any comments or information to exchange about this crucial event but spent their time ‘gossiping’ about every other ‘trivial’ Middle-Eastern matter?

Following the leak (and even before), Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a press conference that Israel had “worked in advance” to limit any damage from leaks, adding that “no classified Israeli material was exposed by WikiLeaks.” [6] In an interview with the Time magazine around the same time, Assange praised Netanyahu as a hero of transparency and openness! [7]

According to another report [8], a left-leaning Lebanese newspaper had met with Assange twice and tried to negotiate a deal with him, offering “a big amount of money”, in order to get hold of documents concerning the 2006 war, particularly the minutes of a meeting held at the American embassy in Beirut on 24th July 2006, which is widely considered as a ‘war council’ meeting between American, Israeli and Lebanese parties that played a role in the war again Hizbullah and its allies. The documents the Al-Akhbar editors received, however, all date to 2008 onwards and do not contain “anything of value,” the sources confirm. This only goes to support the Israel deal allegations.

Finally, it might be worth pointing out that Assange might have done what he is alleged to have done in order protect himself and ensure that the leaked documents are published so as to expose the American hypocrisy, which he is said to be obsessed with “at the expense of more fundamental aims.”

Haaretz – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Wednesday defended his disclosure of classified U.S. documents by singling out Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an example of a world leader who believes the publications will aid global diplomacy.

“He (Netanyahu) believes that the result of this publication, which makes the sentiments of many privately held beliefs public, are promising a pretty good [indecipherable] will lead to some kind of increase in the peace process in the Middle East and particularly in relation to Iran,” Assange said.

“I just noticed today Iran has agreed to nuclear talks. Maybe that’s coincidence or maybe it’s coming out of this process, but it’s certainly not being canceled by this process,” he added.
