A Wikileaks Christmas

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 04:19 AM PST

Anything to keep the case in the public eye? Thank you, Newsweek, for this delightful photo gallery:

The holidays are a time of rest and relaxation for everyone, even enigmatic, internationally wanted former fugitives under house arrest. In an exclusive photo gallery, NEWSWEEK peeks into WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange‘s Christmas revelry as he awaits a British court’s decision on whether he will be extradited to Sweden to face sexual-assault charges. Here, he tours the grounds of his detention (a British country mansion) with his hat slung rakishly to the side.

Who is best to keep unnecessary secrets now?

The job of real journalists and citizens is to challenge government spin and lies and not feel sorry for a super-power being less able to get its way:

Before the infamous leak, the 250,000 State Department cables acquired by anti-secrecy activists resided in a database so obscure that few diplomats had heard of it.

It had a bureaucratic name, Net-Centric Diplomacy, and served an important mission: the rapid sharing of information that could help uncover threats against the United States. But like many bureaucratic inventions, it expanded beyond what its creators had imagined. It also contained risks that no one foresaw.

Millions of people around the world now know that the State Department’s secret cables became the property of WikiLeaks. But only recently have investigators understood the critical role played by Net-Centric Diplomacy, a computer initiative that became the conduit for what was perhaps the biggest heist of sensitive U.S. government documents in modern times.

Partly because of its design but also because of confusion among its users, the database became an inadvertent repository for a vast array of State Department cables, including records of the U.S. government’s most sensitive discussions with foreign leaders and diplomats. Unfortunately for the department, the system lacked features to detect the unauthorized downloading by Pentagon employees and others of massive amounts of data, according to State Department officials and information-security experts. The result was a disastrous setback for U.S. diplomatic efforts around the globe.

“This was as bad as it gets,” said Patrick F. Kennedy, undersecretary of state for management, referring to the diplomatic fallout. “We had, over the course of many years, built up a huge amount of faith and trust. That’s ruptured now, all over the world.”

The Fight for Justice in Palestine and Socialism Internationally Continues

Undoubtedly the biggest story of the year was Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and its murder of 9 human rights activists on the Mavi Marmara. Israel has spent its time since then justifying the attack as an act of self defence! We covered this story repeatedly – here, here, here, here , here here, here, here, here here here, here, here, here .

Although the BBC was only too happy to accept the Israeli version of events, with its disgraceful Panorama programme ‘Death on the Med’, the UNHCR investigation was quite clear and the report it produced was a model of cold, calm and forensic analysis. It trawled through the Israeli excuses, its preposterous forgery ‘Auschwitz calling’ which bamboozled the BBC.

I helped organise a letter by over 200 people, firstly to the BBC, then when that was ignored we collected enough money to have it printed in the New Statesman, Morning Star, Tribune and Weekly Worker. Money left over was donated to a number of different groups including Electronic Intifada, Jews 4 Boycotting Israeli goods, The Gaza Boats and Friends of Bir Zeit University.

We also showed the mentality of violence behind the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla as evidenced in the blinding in one eye of an American Jewish student, Emily Honchowicz, who was demonstrating at Qualandiya check-point against the attack. The Israeli army even refused to pay the bill for her medical treatment and the ex-Express editor of the Jewish Chronicle Stephen Pollard replied to my suggestion that he cover the issue by saying it would make a ‘fine addition’ to his delete folder..

We also covered the attacks on Haneen Zoabi, the Palestinian MK, who was on board the Mavi Marmara. The Israeli Police even went so far as to deliberately fire rubber bullets at her on a demonstration.

We highlighted the behaviour of Israel’s Quisling Palestinian Authority, which tried to sabotage criticism of Israel’s behaviour. The reason being too obvious to state. It has even tried to hush up the devastating criticism of the murders on the Mavi Marmara by kicking the whole issue into the long grass.

A subsequent Jewish Boat to Gaza was also boarded by Israel’s Pirate Navy.

We have covered extensively the issue of racist Israeli rabbis and their Nazi-style injunctions to kill non-Jews. This is an issue which has now begun to be taken up with the recent edict of the Chief Rabbi of Safed that it is forbidden to rent to non-Jews. Something Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to hypocritically criticise.

However that doesn’t stop Netanyahu being in alliance with Shas, a religious sephardi party whose former Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef is of the opinion that non-Jews exist only to serve Jews! It is not only Palestinians who are the recipients of Zionist racism. Even their stupid Christian supporters in Israeli settlements are attacked!

We also highlighted the connections between British and Israeli rabbis, not least through the Lubavitch group and the silence of their British counterparts.

Bans on letting housing to Arabs is a particular instance of the growing level of overt racism in Israeli society as evidenced by the fact that the majority of Israeli high school students oppose equal rights for Israeli Arabs. and the efforts of the Israeli Knesset to bypass a Supreme Court ruling that prevented Arabs and non-Jews being barred from renting property. Israeli model Bar Refaeli was urged not to marry a non-Jew, Leonardo di Caprio because it would dilute the Jewish ‘race’.

Barring Arabs from renting or leasing ‘Jewish’ property is a major theme for Israeli racists. Just to be sure, Israeli MKs voted down a bill to allocate land between Arabs and Jews equally. l

We have opposed not only Zionist racism against Arabs but also anti-semitism and anti-Jewish hatred. Although coverage of Gilad Atzmon has died as he has become less prominent, the new revelations that Israeli anti-Semite Israel Shamir was involved in WikiLeaks has raised consternation about his role, not least in supplying information to the government of Belorussia.

Other highlights included our coverage of the disruption of the concert by the Israeli Occupation Forces Distinguished Musicians, the Jerusalem Quartet. The author of this blog was one of the participants and it sparked off massive publicity. We had, unknowingly, touched rather a sort nerve with the Zionists.

We also reported the BBC pulling a report about the claim, by the clown who doubles up as co-Chair of the Zionist Federation, Jonathan Hoffman, that he was the subject of anti-semitic heckling at a UCU meeting addressed by two ANC activists. A video tape of the meeting demonstrated conclusively that there was no anti-semitic heckling and within 24 hours of their report being posted the BBC substituted another, more accurate, report. The Jewish Chronicle however refused to change its reporting or inform its readers that the report was disputed and it was reprimanded by the Press Complaints Commission for this in a rare adverse ruling.

Hoffman was also in the thick of it for holding counter-demonstrations in support of the Israeli ‘beauty’ shop Ahava alongside the fascist EDL. This alliance was first born when both the EDL joined the Zionist Federation demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy to support the murders on the Mavi Marmara. It has since blossomed. When a photo was shown on this blog of Hoffman clearly working harmoniously with the leader of the ‘Jewish’ Division of the EDL, Roberta Moore, he denounced the photo as having been ‘photoshopped’ i.e. touched up or faked. The photographer, a David Hoffman was not amused and Jonathan H was forced to make a grovelling apology.

A number of our stories have ended up in both the British and international press.

The year ends with one of the workers in the store making anti-semitic comments about Jews being Christ-killers and the Zionist counter-demonstrators, led by Richard Millett, falling over themselves to excuse the remark. Unable to restrain himself, Jonathan H once again puts his foot in it. h

In wider terms we see the continued ethnic cleansing of Palestinian Arabs, both inside Israel itself and on the West Bank. The Gaza siege remains in place, with the active collaboration of Egypt. On the solidarity front the BDS movement continues to grow as companies who trade with Israel, like Veolia, feel the heat.

This blog tries not simply to reflect existing coverage but to cover themes and research stories that are often off the beaten track, such as the pernicious role of the Zionist security group, CST, which despite living off ‘anti-semitism’ has nothing to say about demonstrating with the EDL. We also showed in an in-depth report how the CST manipulates its statistics of ‘anti-semitism’. whilst focussing its attentions on anti-Zionism not the anti-semitism of its supporters. We showed how the CST refuses to accept that someone Jewish can make an anti-semitic remark, even when it is along the lines of ‘pity Hitler didn’t get you’ whilst far milder remarks by non-Jews are considered anti-semitic.

Unlike others, we are not afraid to draw comparisons, when justified, between the actions of Israel and Nazi Germany. Why? Because Israel itself has lived off the holocaust as a propaganda weapon and therefore it is fitting to point out that if anyone best meets the comparison it is they themselves. We report former Israeli judge ben-Itto who proclaimed that Israel must learn from the Nazis. But also because some Israelis, a minority to be sure, do make the connections between what Israel does today and what the Nazis did in the past. There are brave Israelis who defy the state and suffer accordingly, such as Jonathan Pollak, recently jailed, for riding a bicycle against the Gaza siege.

We covered in depth the phenomenon of Israeli soldiers identifying themselves with the Nazi oppressor in Europe. We showed a video of right-wing demonstrators in Jerusalem attacking Jewish supporters in Sheikh Jarrah, where settlers are trying to make inroads, shouting ‘Hitler was Right’. But then we all know that Zionists regular attack anti-Zionist Jews in the same ‘pity Hitler didn’t get you’ terms with an example of the hate-mail sent to this blog.

Despite the Guardian’s reluctance to make such comparisons, it ended up endorsing the brave Israeli reporter Amira Hass who has done just that!

The year began with a report that the Speaker of the Knesset had urged an apology by the State to holocaust survivors for having kept them in penury whilst living off money intended for them.

We have also, on occasions, drawn attention to the historic role of Zionism as a movement which collaborated with Nazism when necessary and which always counterposed building a ‘Jewish’ State to saving Jewish refugees. A recent story highlights how Israel used Nazi war criminals after the war, including one Walter Rauff.

For years Zionism has tried to associate itself with the American Civil Rights Movement and has quoted Martin Luther King to the effect that anti-Zionism was anti-semitic. We showed how this was a faked quote.

We also organised a letter to the New Labour leader Ed Miliband urging him not to become a patron of the Jewish National Fund, like his predecessors. He didn’t respond so we sent a similar letter to the Guardian, which did print it.

Jews 4 Boycotting Israeli Goods also held their founding meeting, which was packed, as guest speakers included Tony Lerman, who came under criticism for having spoken at the conference!

This is not just an anti-Zionist anti-Apartheid blog. It is a socialist blog and we have highlighted the battle of university and school students and the attacks on benefit claimants. in particular against the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.

We also had a major victory in Brighton with the acquittal of the EDO Activists who had decommissioned, i.e. smashed up, the EDO-MBM arms factory that manufactures bomb release mechanisms for the Israeli airforce. Neither Melanie Phillips nor the Israeli Ambassador were best pleased. Which is perhaps a good note on which to end the year!

A happy New Year to you all!

Hypocrisy and good intentions will not stop the next massacre. Only a good hard look at ourselves and sufficient resolve to face up to the ugliness in our midst will do so

We are to join in a chorus of condemnation. Jointly, Muslims and Christians, government and opposition, Church and Mosque, clerics and laypeople – all of us are going to stand up and with a single voice declare unequivocal denunciation of al-Qaeda, Islamist militants, and Muslim fanatics of every shade, hue and color; some of us will even go the extra mile to denounce salafi Islam, Islamic fundamentalism as a whole, and the Wahabi Islam which, presumably, is a Saudi import wholly alien to our Egyptian national culture.

And once again we’re going to declare the eternal unity of “the twin elements of the nation”, and hearken back the Revolution of 1919, with its hoisted banner showing the crescent embracing the cross, and giving symbolic expression to that unbreakable bond.

Much of it will be sheer hypocrisy; a great deal of it will be variously nuanced so as keep, just below the surface, the heaps of narrow-minded prejudice, flagrant double standard and, indeed, bigotry that holds in its grip so many of the participants in the condemnations.

All of it will be to no avail. We’ve been here before; we’ve done exactly that, yet the massacres continue, each more horrible than the one before it, and the bigotry and intolerance spread deeper and wider into every nook and cranny of our society. It is not easy to empty Egypt of its Christians; they’ve been here for as long as there has been Christianity in the world. Close to a millennium and half of Muslim rule did not eradicate the nation’s Christian community, rather it maintained it sufficiently strong and sufficiently vigorous so as to play a crucial role in shaping the national, political and cultural identity of modern Egypt.

Yet now, nearly two centuries after the birth of the modern Egyptian nation state, and as we embark on the second decade of the 21stcentury, the previously unheard of seems no longer beyond imagining: a Christian-free Egypt, one where the cross will have slipped out of the crescent’s embrace, and off the flag symbolizing our modern national identity. I hope that if and when that happens I will have been long dead, but dead or alive this will be an Egypt which I do not recognize and to which I have no desire to belong.

I am no Zola, but I too can accuse. And it’s not the blood thirsty criminals of al-Qaeda or whatever other gang of hoodlums involved in the horror of Alexandria that I am concerned with. I accuse a government that seems to think that by outbidding the Islamists it will also outflank them. I accuse the host of MPs and government officials who cannot help but take their own personal bigotries along to the parliament, or to the multitude of government bodies, national and local, from which they exercise unchecked, brutal ye the same time hopelessly inept authority.

I accuse those state bodies who believe that by bolstering the Salafi trend they are undermining the Muslim Brotherhood, and who like to occasionally play to bigoted anti-Coptic sentiments, presumably as an excellent distraction from other more serious issues of government.

But most of all, I accuse the millions of supposedly moderate Muslims among us; those who’ve been growing more and more bigoted, inclusive and narrow minded with every passing year.

I accuse those among us who would rise up in fury over a decision to halt construction of a Muslim Center near ground zero in New York, but applaud the Egyptian police when they halt the construction of a staircase in a Coptic church in the Omranya district of Greater Cairo.

I’ve been around, and I have heard you speak, in the office, or in the club, or in dinner banquets: “The Copts must be taught a lesson,” “the Copts are growing more arrogant,” “the Copts are holding secret conversions of Muslims”, and in the same breath, “the Copts are preventing Christian women from converting to Islam, kidnapping them, and locking them up in monasteries.”

I accuse you all, because in your bigoted blindness you cannot even see the violence to logic and sheer common sense that you commit; that you dare accuse the whole world of using a double standard against us, and are, at the same time, wholly incapable of showing a minimum awareness of your own blatant double standard.

And finally, I accuse the liberal intellectuals, both Muslim and Christian who, whether complicit, afraid, or simply unwilling to do or say anything that may displease “the masses”, have stood aside, finding it sufficient to join in one chorus of denunciation following another, even as the massacres spread wider, and grow more horrifying.

A few years ago I wrote in the Arabic daily Al-Hayat, commenting on a columnist in one of the Egyptian papers. The columnist, whose name I’ve since forgotten, wrote lauding the patriotism of an Egyptian Copt who had written, saying that he would rather be killed at the hands of his Muslim brethren than seek American intervention to save him.

Addressing myself to the patriotic Copt, I simply asked him the question: where does his willingness for self-sacrifice for the sake of the nation stop. Giving his own life may be quite noble laudable endeavor, but is he also willing to give up the lives of his children, wife, mother? How many Egyptian Christians, I asked him, are willing to sacrifice before you call upon outside intervention, a million, two, three, all of them?

Our options, I said then and continue to say today are not so impoverished and lacking in imagination and resolve that we are obliged to choose between having Egyptian Copts killed, individually or en masse, or run to Uncle Sam. Is it really so difficult to conceive of ourselves as rational human beings with a minimum of backbone so as to act to determine our fate, the fate of our nation?

That, indeed, is the only option we have before us, and we better grasp it, before it’s too late

Remembering the future?

Very lazy blogging this. I mean lazier than usual. I checked the tag for co-blogger, Gabriel Ash, and saw a post on Mondoweiss’s take on Herzl. I went then to Mondoweiss where I saw a cross-post from Max Blumenthal’s blog on how some Palestinian women were abused by Israelis as the former were visiting the holocaust circus, Yad Vashem.

This week, a group of elderly Palestinian women were escorted to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance musuem to learn about the Jewish genocide in Europe. At the entrance of the museum, they were surrounded by a group of Jewish Israeli youth who recognized them as Arabs. “Sharmouta!” the young Israelis shouted at them again and again, using the Arabic slang term for whores, or sluts.

The Palestinians had been invited to attend a tour arranged by the Israeli Bereaved Families Forum, an organization founded by an Israeli whose son was killed in combat by Palestinians. They were joined by a group of Jewish Israeli women who, like them, had lost family members to violence related to the conflict. Presumably, both parties went on the tour in good faith, hoping to gain insight into the suffering of women on the other side of the conflict.

Unfortunately, the Palestinian members (who unlike the Israelis live under occupation and almost certainly had to obtain special permits just to go to Yad Vashem) learned an unusual lesson of the Holocaust: A society that places the Holocaust at the center of its historical narrative — that stops traffic for two minutes each year on the national holiday known as Yom Ha’Shoah — could also raise up a generation of little fascists goose-stepping into the future full of irrational hatred.

Of course, it is not simply the placement of the holocaust “at the center of its historical narrative” that makes Israel as racist as it is.  The ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians began as soon as the Jewish National Fund began buying land from absentee landlords and the holocaust was not consciously placed “at the center of its historical narrative” until after the main bout of ethnic cleansing though the holocaust had happened.

No, Israel has always been a racist state and zionism has always been a racist project.   But why is Israel getting more explicitly racist now? What’s all that about? I don’t really know. I think appeasement has something to do with it but it doesn’t explain everything. I’m going to wait until Gabriel comes out of his winter hibernation. He usually explains these things very well.

Oh, happy new year everyone!

Gaza’s Children

Gaza’s Children

This short video is incredibly moving. It shows the cruel reality of Zionist terrorism. It brings the horrifying numbers of 1300 Palestinians dead, more than 5000 wounded and 40,000 homeless to the reality seen in just these few children who are victims. These horrendous numbers mean that the 1.5 million people of Gaza faced terror that was proportionately a 100 times greater for them than what America suffered from 9-11. The numbers represent real people, real women and children, real victims of Zionist murder.

This video also shows incredible courage. The young boy pictured here was helping the wounded when both of his eyes were ripped out from their sockets by Zio+nazi bombs. He survives, but never will see again. While lying in the hospital, knowing that he will be in darkness forever, he does not wallow in his own suffering and pain, but remains defiant.

His words are: “I am content. I fear no one, only my Lord. If they were to do this again, I would still be content. I tell the people in Gaza to remain strong. We will remain steadfast against the Israeli enemy.”

If just 10 percent of Europeans and Americans had a fraction of the courage and resolve of that blinded child, the Zionists would not today control the media, politics and policy of the Western World, and they would not have been able to destroy our heritage, traditions, values, morality, faith.

They would not have been able to change America through the 20th century massive immigration of an army of Zionist supremacists into America in the last century, in a similar way that they destroyed Palestine through massive Zionist immigration there.

And, certainly they would never have been able to turn America from a nation founded on principles of independence, justice and freedom to a nation that supports the horrendous terror inflicted by the Zionists on women and children in Gaza.

We Will not Go Down (In Gaza Tonight)

I wanted to share this very moving song with the readers and listeners at It is a beautiful song by the songwriter and singer Michael Heart. It may be hard for some European Americans to understand it,  but the Palestinians are being suppressed and murdered by the very same power that is destroying the heritage and rights of the European people: the power of international Zionism and Jewish extremism.

The Zionist state has not only committed terrorism against Palestine and many other Mideast people, Zionist has committed bloody terrorism directly against U.K And America!

In the Lavon Affair Zionist made terrorist firebomb attacks against American installations in Egypt trying to get us into a deadly and costly, unjust war against that country. The Zio=Nazi State attacked the U.S.S. Liberty and murdered 34 Americans on our navy ship, burning and maiming another 173 loyal American sailors!  American Secretary of State has steadfastly said that Zio-Nazi knowingly and deliberately attacked the American ship.

Zionists have controlled American politics and so much of the media that they have been able to get America to support their terrorism against Palestine with billions of American tax dollars. This Zionist subversion against America led directly to the 9-11 attacks and that enormous loss of American life. Zionist extremists such as Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz along with the NY Times and the rest of the Zionist-dominated media lied to America and led us into the catastrophe of the Iraq War and more than 4,000 dead and about 50,000 maimed good and loyal Americans.

The Iraq War was a War For Zionism, a war meant to smite Zionist’s enemy, Saddam Hussein. Now, their ebony puppet, Barack Obama is leading us deeper into the quagmire of Afghanistan when the truth is that we need our good men on the border of Mexico, not on the border of Pakistan!

I salute the Palestinian men, women and children who have suffered from Zionist terrorism and who fight courageously against their enemy. The enemy of the Palestinian people is truly the enemy of all.The Zionist extremists are the enemy of peace, heritage and freedom for all peoples  and certainly are the greatest enemy on earth of the European and American people.

Long live Palestine.  We true people HONOR YOU!
