Western Officials Raise Prospect of Assassinating Gadhafi

British FM Says Assassination Depends on Gadhafi’s Behavior

by Jason Ditz

Citing the lingering stalemate in Libya, a number of top Western officials are raising the prospect of assassinating Moammar Gadhafi as a means of either winning the war or escalating it, depending on which they were advocating.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R – SC) said assassinating Gadhafi would be the “quickest” way to end the stalemate, while John McCain (R – AZ) said it should be the first step toward increasing the number of US air strikes in Libya. Graham in particular had been calling for the assassinationfor weeks.

Officials have speculated that the assassination would be much easier now that the US has added Predator drones to the war. The first such strike was reported over the weekend.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he wouldn’t rule out the assassination, but that the decision of whether or not to kill Gadhafi or anyone else “depends on their behavior.” Officials have differed over whether the war, which is nominally the result of a UN call for a no-fly zone, should include such assassinations.

US Senators Urge Non-Military Intervention in Syria

The Lincoln Tribune

U.S. senators of both major political parties are urging greater support for Syria’s embattled  opposition short of direct military intervention.

After days of bloody attacks and raids by Syrian security forces on civilians,  American legislators say the United States should provide greater backing for those opposed to President Bashar al-Assad. Republican Senator Mark Kirk of  Illinois appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” television program.

“We should use the diplomatic weight and authority of the United States to undermine the Syrian dictatorship. I think we are witnessing the slow end of the Assad dictatorship, and we should stand with the people of Syria.”

Kirk was asked if he envisions a U.S. military role in Syria similar to ongoing U.S. efforts in Libya.

“No, I think the U.S. military is now overstretched with four major missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Japan. But U.S. weight and diplomatic authority can be a great source of strength and political support for the Syrian opposition.”

That view was echoed by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.

“We should encourage the democratic movement in Syria, but at the same time avoid anything like an open-ended commitment. Certainly no [U.S.] troops on the ground.”

Blumenthal said he hopes events in Syria play out more like those in Egypt, where Hosni Mubarak left power without foreign intervention, than the current situation in Libya, where leader Moammar Gadhafi remains in power despite a NATO-led air campaign.

Also appearing on CBS was Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, who said the United States should continue to play a constructive yet limited role in promoting democratic change in the Middle East.

“America is safest and America is strongest when we lead with our values. And the values we have that are really compelling to folks around the world are when we stand up and support democracy and people who are seeking a greater role in their own countries. We have done that in a way that I think is moving (positively impacting) the Middle East — not towards the Seventh Century caliphate view of al-Qaida, but instead towards a view of wanting to participate in the 21st Century.”

Some U.S. legislators are urging more aggressive U.S. military efforts to end the rule of Libya’s Gadhafi. But Senator Coons urged patience, saying the current strategy of applying military and economic pressure on Gadhafi needs time to work.

Syria: President Bashar al-Assad faces indictment by the International Criminal Court

Syria: President Bashar al-Assad faces indictment by the International Criminal Court

President Bashar al-Assad faces indictment by the International Criminal Court as Western leaders were told on Sunday that the Syrian leader could be held to account for the deaths of 120 anti-government protesters.

Many Western officials have been reluctant to criticise Mr Assad too harshly, even though his regime has long been treated as a near pariah Photo: PAUL GROVER

An influential body of international judges and lawyers called for Mr Assad and his lieutenants to be held to account for Easter weekend attacks in which troops and militamen fire on civilians.

“Those ordering and carrying out these attacks, including those firing live rounds into crowds, must be held criminally accountable,” the International Committee of Jurists (ICJ) said in a statement.

As opposition supporters continued to bury dead comrades on Sunday, four more were reported to have been killed.

William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, warned all Britons in Syria that the scale of violence was so grave they should leave immediately or risk not being able to leave “at all” as the turmoil worsened.

Western governments were coming under growing scrutiny for their divergent policies towards Libya and Syria, where more than 300 people have been shot dead since unrest began five weeks ago.

Critics complained that while the West has been comparatively quick to go to the aid of the Libyan people, Syrians struggling against one of the Middle East’s most repressive regimes had largely been abandoned to their fate. “The international community has failed so far to protect the people of Syria from wide-scale human rights violations,” Wilder Taylor, the ICJ’s secretary-general, said.

Syria has deployed many of the same tactics used by Col Gaddafi in Libya, with unarmed protesters facing live fire by both the security forces and loyalist militiamen and snipers.

But many Western officials have been reluctant to criticise Mr Assad too harshly, even though his regime has long been treated as a near pariah.

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, initially sought to present Mr Assad as a reformist struggling against hardliners in his regime. Even Israel, which remains technically at war with Syria, has privately urged Washington to refrain from action that could destabilise Mr Assad for fear that his downfall could usher in a more hostile government.

But after more than 100 deaths on Good Friday, the bloodiest day of the protests so far, Western leaders have stiffened their language. President Barack Obama called the killings “outrageous” and yesterday Mr Hague joined the chorus of condemnation. “I deplore the increasing violence in Syria and am appalled by the killing of demonstrators by Syria’s security forces,” he said.

Such condemnation is unlikely to pacify human rights activists. The ICJ called for Syria to be referred to the United Nations Security Council. “There is enough evidence suggesting mass killings now,” said Said Benarbia, the ICJ’s legal officer for the Middle East. “The Security Council must assess the magnitude of human rights violations. It must decide whether to have an international fact-finding mission and, if there is enough evidence, refer it to the International Criminal Court.”

Human Rights Watch, the New York-based advocacy group, also called for action by urging Western states to impose sanctions on Syrian officials involved in the killings of civilians.

Zio-Nazi Gestapo beat up a group of Palestinian Christians while on their way to visit the Church of Holy Sepulcher in occupied Jerusalem on the occasion of “Holy Saturday”.

Palestinian sources said that the Zio-Nazi’s manning a barricade prevented the young men from proceeding to the Holy site while allowing dozens of foreign tourists to cross in the company of Zionist tourist guides, which led to clashes.

A Christian activist accused Zio-Nazi of religious harassment against all non-Jews.

For its part, the Sawasiya center for human rights charged that Zionist was planning to block entry of non-Jews to occupied Jerusalem.

It said that Zionist schemes to build more housing units in the holy city pointed to such a plot, adding that they target wiping out Jerusalem’s Arab and Islamic landmarks and expelling non-Jews out of it.

The center described Zionist schemes as an infringement on the freedom of worship and a blatant violation of international laws that prohibit introducing any changes to an occupied territory or forcing its inhabitants out of their land.

MUST SEE! Vicious Crucifiction Video From Zio-Nazi Television

“Few know that the worst of it, the most hateful slurs, the bigotry and spiteful obscenities are saved to use against Christianity.”

Editor’s note:  We got this from Gilad Atzmon who picked it up from Zio-Nazi racist television.  This is what Zionist children are raised on.  You wonder why we doesn’t trust Zionist or its friends in congress.

For those who missed the Zio-Nazi video excusing the attack on the Freedom Flotilla or the murder of Rachel Corrie, we hope you enjoy the “Flotilla Choir” performance.

YouTube – Veterans Today –

If this video is a surprise to you and you believed that Zionist loved Christians and the United States, you have a long and bumpy road to travel on your way to understanding the world around you.

Most Americans are aware of the Islamophobic propaganda that fills the airways and internet, stories warning of stonings and Sharia Law, the carefully orchestrated “fear of Jihad” peddled 24 hours a day.

Few know that the worst of it, the most hateful slurs, the bigotry and hatred is saved to use against Christianity.

In the end, you will come to realize that Zionist has been hijacked by a Stalinesque military dictatorship that hates the United States, a criminal conspiracy that hides behind the decent Jewish people of the world.  This is the simple truth of it.

YouTube – Veterans Today –

Video’s like this are their way of indoctrinating the  Zionist to accept their criminal acts.  Every Christian Zionist cleric should see this.  Make sure it happens.

America: The Party is Over! Here’s Why

by Lorimer Wilson

We Are In The Biggest Debt Bubble In The History Of The World

We Americans have enjoyed an incredibly wonderful standard of living over the past three decades with most of us believing that it was because we are the world’s wealthiest, most prosperous nation with economic and financial systems that are second to none – but that is not even close to accurate. [The truth of the matter is that] we are [actually] in the biggest debt bubble the world has ever seen! It has been the greatest party in the history of the world, but it is time to turn out the lights because the party is over. [Let me explain.] Words: 1518

So says in an article* which Lorimer Wilson, editor of, has further edited ([  ]), abridged (…) and reformatted below for the sake of clarity and brevity to ensure a fast and easy read. (Please note that this paragraph must be included in any article re-posting to avoid copyright infringement.) The article goes on to say:

The reason why we have had an almost unbelievably high standard of living over the past three decades is because we have piled up the biggest mountains of debt in the history of the world.  Once upon a time the United States was the wealthiest country on the planet, but all of that prosperity was not good enough for us… we started borrowing and borrowing and borrowing and we have now been living beyond our means for so long that we consider it to be completely normal. [Nothing could be further from the truth!]

We have been robbing future generations blind for so long that it doesn’t even seem to bother most people anymore.  We have become accustomed to living in debt.  We go into massive amounts of debt to get an education, we go into massive amounts of debt to buy a home, we go into massive amounts of debt to buy our cars, and we even pile up debt to buy holiday gifts and to purchase groceries.

The chart below shows the total credit market debt owed in the United States, i.e. what everyone owes (government, businesses and consumers). 30 years ago, total credit market debt owed was less than 5 trillion dollars.  Today, it is over 50 trillion dollars.  Total credit market debt is now at a level equivalent to about 360 percent of GDP.  This is what has been fueling the great era of ”economic prosperity” that we have been experiencing….

How Can We Correct the Debt Problem?

The truth is that there is not an easy answer under our current system.  The only way that the U.S. economy continues to “grow” is if the debt bubble continues to “expand”. If our leaders allowed the debt bubble to “pop” and the U.S. economy went into a deleveraging cycle, it would mean that we would start living far below our means for an extended period of time and it would spawn a deflationary depression that would make the Great Depression look like a Sunday picnic. Most Americans are in no mood to take that kind of hard medicine.

Do you really think that the American people are going to vote in politicians who tell them that it is time to live below our means and that we are going to have to experience a standard of living far below what our parents experienced in order to pay for all the debt that they racked up? No, that is clearly a dog that isn’t going to hunt. The American people want to hear that better times are ahead.

Will This Be The USA in 2012?

The economic condition of the country continues to declinetoward its rendezvous with an, as yet, unknowable catastrophe. Here is… a look (not a prediction) at a series of not improbable events that could develop [and which] would change our economic world overnight. Words: 1550

So says Monty Pelerin (pseudonym) in an article* reformatted and edited […] below by Lorimer Wilson, editor, for the sake of clarity and brevity to ensure a fast and easy read. Please note that this paragraph must be included in any article reposting to avoid copyright infringement. Pelerin goes on to say:

A Possible Economic Apocalypse Outlook For 2012

The country has officially been in  economic recession since the end of 2010. Many believe that it never recovered from what began in 2008. The word depression is now commonplace. Trust in Congress has fallen to single digits. Similarly, government reports and statistics are increasingly mocked by the public. The media is likened to Pravda because only government-speak is allowed. Distrust, despair and fear are everywhere.

  • Official unemployment numbers approach 14%. Unofficial estimates of unemployment range from 30 -35%. There are no signs of a turnaround in employment.
  • The Dow-Jones average hovers around 4,500.
  • Official GDP has been declining for four consecutive quarters. Independent analysts estimate the true numbers have been declining for two years.
  • Tax collections continue to drop while Federal spending accelerates. The deficit is expected to exceed $3 Trillion. Federal debt now exceeds $16 Trillion.
  • The rate of foreclosures has doubled from the previous high in 2011. Personal and corporate bankruptcies have reached levels thought impossible.
  • Major companies have left or announced intentions of leaving the U.S. to avoid the confiscatory taxes and regulations. College students, unable to find jobs, are emigrating to more favorable economies.
  • California, Illinois and several other states are in bankruptcy court as are thousand of municipalities. Many states and municipalities are using IOUs for payments.
  • Welfare and unemployment checks are two months behind on average. Social Security checks and Medicare reimbursements are delayed. Some private pension funds have reduced their payments by 10 – 25%.
  • Hospitals and doctors refuse to see Medicare patients until Federal reimbursements, already eight months behind schedule, are paid.
  • Public unions across the country are on strike. Large areas are without teachers, police, firemen or hospital staff.
  • Food stamps are being rejected at grocery stores because of slow reimbursement and government default risk.
  • Martial law has been imposed in several cities to counter rioting and looting.
  • Isolated runs on banks have occurred. Mattress-stuffing is considered less risky than zero interest returns from banks.
  • The dollar is being rejected by local merchants around the world. Oil is priced in a weighted basket of currencies of which only 20% represents dollars.
  • Foreign disinvestment in Treasuries has been accelerating as a result of trade wars, concerns of default and the desperate need for funding at home.
  • Gold is selling at $2,800 per ounce.
  • The economy continues to deteriorate despite QE on a scale not even Paul Krugman would have recommended. Treasury and toxic asset purchases have swelled the Fed’s balance sheet from $800 billion in 2008 to $6 Trillion.
  • The deflationary spiral continues despite incredible money-creation. Banks continue to add more excess reserves. Creditworthy borrowers refuse to borrow. People and businesses everywhere have hunkered down, waiting for the next shoe to drop. Many withdraw funds from the banking system in fear of its collapse.

The Possible (Likely) Emergency Measure

It is against the above economic backdrop that the President of the United States Joe Biden (in office for six months after former President Obama resigned “to spend more time with his family”) appears, along with Treasury Secretary Chris Dodd and Fed Chairman Barney Frank, and issues the following short, terse message:

The Federal Government, as a result of our national economic emergency, will be recalling all U.S. dollars effective immediately.  All will be replaced with new currency known as the JohnLawDollar. Each old dollar will be exchanged for three JohnLawDollars. Amounts in checking accounts and savings accounts will automatically convert by tomorrow at 10 AM. Currency in circulation must be taken to a bank and converted within the next 48 hours. Dollars in foreign countries will have 72 hours to convert. All old dollars will be unredeemable and no longer legal tender after the deadlines. All contractual obligations will be honored in JohnLawDollars.

This action is necessary in order to revive our economy from a downturn nearly as severe as the Great Depression. Your new dollars are triple what your old dollars were. With your larger amount of money, we encourage you to go out and buy stuff, lots of it. Your cooperation will revive the economy.

THIRD PALESTINIAN INTIFADA: All Arabs to March on Israel on May 15th

“With those powerful political storms rolling up the Middle East, and with this unstoppable and unpredictable domino effect of popular uprisings, how long before we watch the Israeli domino piece fall down”

“And if dictatorships are not tolerated in the Arab world anymore, why the Israeli quasi-dictatorship over the Palestinians should be any exception”

Dr. Ashraf Ezzat

All of The popular uprisings that swept through the Arab world have been preplanned and officially launched on facebook pages weeks in advance.

Pro-Israel lobbying. An Israeli Cabinet minister, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and a massive American-Zionist campaign have succeeded in pressuring Facebook into removing the “third Intifada” page, which clearly calls for an all-Arab uprising against Israel.
According to the facebook “cause” page, the plan for the intifada would go as follows;

Friday, May 13th
In Egypt, the epicenter of the Arab world, the biggest Arab country and from Tahrir square at the heart of Cairo where the whole Arab spring has sprung and gained fervent momentum, this massive Arab intifada will be launched.
Millions will gather once again in Tahrir square at the heart of Cairo but this time to call for all Arab-march toward Israel.

This mass protest will come two days prior to the actual march, as a clear message to Israel and the rest of the world that liberating Palestine is the core cause for every Arab in the Middle East. And that restoring Jerusalem is all Arab’s sacred mission

Sunday, May 15th
To commemorate the Palestinian exodus day 1948 ( Nakba) when well over 750000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled out of their home land by Israel, similar number of Thousands angry Arab protesters from Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon along with their Palestinian brothers from Gaza and the occupied west bank will advance toward Israel in what they call, the third intifada.

Profile photo of the third Intifada on facebook

In their march they will be denouncing the ongoing Zionist occupation of the Arabic land of Palestine and calling for internationally recognized independent Palestinian state over its legitimate pre-1967 borders with Eastern Jerusalem as its capital.

Those fair Palestinian demands have been begged for by all ways known to diplomacy over the last 60 years. But since diplomacy has utterly failed the Arabs of Palestine and since politicians have granted them nothing except despair and Diaspora, they thought it was time they put their life into their own hands.

And what could be more timely than this Arab spring, which a lot of Arabs could not see or rather imagine approaching its full bloom without Palestine included.

This revolutionary plan that has been publicly posted on a facebook “cause” page and given the daring title “the third Palestinian Intifada” as there has been two Palestinian Intifada- uprisings- before. The first was sparked in 1987 and the second or what is known as the Aq’sa intifada in 2000, during both uprisings, Israel had to live through years of domestic unrest and worldwide condemnation of its apartheid and oppressive policy toward the Palestinians.

But as this “cause” page managed to attract almost 300000 fans and incredibly growing number of visitors in just few days Israel grew restlessly nervous about it. And nervously restless Israel acted in response.
What was worrying Tel Aviv is the fact that, so far, all Arab uprisings have been kicked off on facebook pages. So, under the boiling situation in the Arab world this facebook call couldn’t be underrated nor neglected.

Bullying facebook

With the unbelievably growing traffic to the facebook page and the spread of the call for a third intifada Israel couldn’t just stand watching underneath its big sign that reads “The only democracy in the Middle East”
Quickly switching signs, Israel grabbed the “Israel-hating and anti-Semitism” sign and put on its despotic mask, and before the administrators of the third intifada knew it, Yuli Edelstein, Israel’s Minister of Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs, on the last week of March wrote Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook co-founder and told him ..

“the social network site has great potential to rally the masses around good causes, and we are all thankful for that. However, such potential comes hand in hand with the ability to cause great harm, such as in the case of the wild incitement displayed on the Third Palestinian Intifada page”

Third Intifada

A facebook statement said on Monday of the first week of April thatwhiles the “third Intifada” page “may be upsetting for someone, criticism of a certain culture, country, religion, lifestyle, or political ideology, for example — that alone is not a reason to remove the discussion.”

At that point it was clear to Israel that this Zuckerberg is not getting the message, Israel didn’t not seek his eloquent definition of the site’s terms for freedom of speech, removing the page that what Israel wanted. So Israel, with its Zionist lobbies and pro-Israel campaigns began to pull some strings and show some muscles and it did not take long before Mr. Mark Zuckerberg came to his senses and reevaluated the page as inciting violence against Israel.

And to make sure this will always be a lesson, learned the hard way, less than a week after facebook removed the intifada page; Zuckerberg was hit by a law suit seeking more than $ 1 billion in damages, for doing too little too late. The law suit has been filed by one of the American Zionist puppets- let off the leash- by the name of Larry Klayman.

After the page was no longer available on Tuesday, ADL director Abraham Foxman commented ..

“By taking this action, Facebook has now recognized an important standard to be applied when evaluating issues of non-compliance with its terms of service involving distinctions between incitement to violence and legitimate calls for collective expressions of opinion and action. We hope that they will continue to vigilantly monitor their pages for other groups that call for violence or terrorism against Jews and Israel.”

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of facebook

But that will be mission impossible, for how could facebook go after thousands of Arab users who replaced their profile photos with the poster photo of the third intifada. Will facebook be able to pull down the other pages that began to play the same intifada tune?
Why can’t Israel face the truth, it is crystal clear, it needs no terrorizing of Zuckerberg or Goldstone. Arabs will never accept Israel as a neighbor state as long as Palestine is being systematically wiped off the map by the Zionist military dictatorship.

Israel could intimidate facebook but not the millions of awakening Arabs.
If facebook to block any page or any account that speaks unfavorably of Israel that will mean that Mr. Zuckerberg is going to sacrifice the hundreds of millions of Arabs and Muslims who are already using facebook worldwide.

Could facebook, contrary to its previous boosting role to the Arab uprisings, save the Israeli domino piece from falling?
That is yet to be seen.

Insider’s view of Libya’s unlikely revolutionaries

Posted: 23 Apr 2011

UK Guardian journalist Chris McGreal – whom I know and respect from his fine reporting in Palestine and South Africa – writes about the latest revolution; Libya:

Few revolutions have been more inspiring. After years of reporting uprisings and conflicts driven by ideology, factional interests or warlords soaked in blood — from El Salvador to Somalia, Congo and Liberia – Libya’s uprising seems to me more akin to South Africa’s liberation from apartheid. For a start, the once pervasive fear of a hated regime is gone.

From the first days, scores of enthusiastic young revolutionaries, high on the prospect of looming victory, indulged the newfound freedom to finally say what they thought. They churned out screeds listing the dictator’s crimes and posters caricaturing Gaddafi as a common thief and agent of Mossad. Some posters imagined him on trial before the international criminal court or strung up on one of the gallows used for public hangings to terrorise the Libyan population.

Revolutionary committees sprang up. Among them was one charged with getting the message to the outside world that Libya 2011 was not Tehran 1979. The savvy revolutionary activists watching CNN and news websites were not slow in recognising the fearmongering in parts of the US media and Congress over what kind of revolution this was.

Almost the only foreigners in Benghazi during the early days of the revolution were journalists. We were feted with free coffee in cafés and regularly stopped on the street and thanked for coming. But reporters were also quizzed by Libyans who picked up on the talk about Islamic extremists hijacking the revolution. Where, they wondered, did the idea of al-Qaeda in Libya come from? Couldn’t people see what kind of revolution this is?

It is hard not to notice how desperate the core of revolutionaries is to be accepted by the west. It is common enough to run into accountants, oil executives and engineers on the frontline who have studied in Nottingham, Manchester and Brighton. They say they admire Britain and the US. Denunciations of America are noticeably absent, at least on the rebel side of the line. France’s president, Nicolas Sarkozy, is a hero in rebel-held areas for recognising the revolutionary administration.

Yet it is also not hard to see why the outside world was uncertain about the revolutionaries. No other country in the Middle East is quite so defined by its leader.

Asylum seeker anger explodes across Australia (while Serco ignores humanity)

Posted: 23 Apr 2011

What do we expect when we treat people like animals to be locked up indefinitely while our too-few-officials manage the problem, often receiving “intelligence” from the very regimes from which people are fleeing?

A number of asylum seekers are continuing a hunger strike into a second day at the Curtin detention centre in Western Australia’s north.

The Immigration Department says about 150 refugees started a peaceful protest yesterday afternoon but it cannot confirm how many are refusing to eat.

Around 60 refugee supporters, including a bus of 50 activists from Perth, have travelled from across Australia to visit the centre.

The Refugee Action Coalition’s Ian Rintoul says the single men have the same concerns as the detainees who rioted at Villawood during the week.

“There are seriously damaged people inside the Curtin Detention Centre, people who have been waiting 15 months even to get a first answer,” he said.

“Plenty of people that we saw in the last few days have been waiting 20 months for their security clearances…there are a lot of very angry and upset people.”

I am receiving reports from activists on the ground near Curtin. The following is written by Gerry Georgatos of the Refugees Rights Action Network:

60 human rights advocates and social justice activists made up of doctors, lawyers, mental health workers, nurses, teachers, social workers, tradespeople, academics, students and others, from various social justice organisations and campaign groups, and others not affiliated to anyone, have arrived this day, Easter Saturday, April 23rd, to Curtin Detention Centre.

We journeyed under the banner of the Refugees Rights Action Network from Perth in a hired bus and with a support vehicle with a trailer of food and camping equipment. The bus was driven by three of the advocates who recently acquired the licence, at their own cost, so as to ensure this journey. We left on Thursday, 7pm from East Perth, with fifty on board the bus and after 24 hours of driving camped at Eightly Mile Beach, arriving near midnight on Easter Friday.
We arrived at Curtin Detention Centre at 3pm on the Saturday. During the last month forty of us had submitted to the Serco managed Curtin Detention Centre therebouts 100 visitor applications. We have been in contact with hundreds of our Asylum Seekers for many months. They are despairing, many are at the brink of mental and physical despair. Their maltreatment in these illegal facilities which incarcerate them have reached a critical mass of rising self harm, depression, acute and chronic trauma, suicide and multiple suicide attempts, and suicide. There have been six Detention Centre deaths (in custody) during the last eight months and undisclosed numerous suicide attempts. Reports to us clearly describe self harm and suicide attempts as a daily occurrence.
Curtin Detention Centre today is on the brink of a pending crisis brought on as per usual by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and Serco management. They are literally driving people into mental illness and literally killing people.
Australian of the Year, in 2010, psychiatrist Patrick McGorrie described these Detention Centres as “mental illness factories”. Australia has 23 Detention Centres and is now building another three Detention Centres. The budget for Detention and processing blows out every year, and is now up to 1.5 billion dollars per annum. How better could we spend this?
Our bus travelled down the beginning of the seven kilometre road leading to the Curtin Detention Centre where we were met by a gated blockade. Behind this gate stood Serco guards, federal police and an Australian Defence Force official. We were instructed that visits may not be possible, then we were told that some visits would be scheduled. We were then told that eight visits would be allowed and that we had to wait. We were lectured by the ADF and the AFP that we would be arrested if we proceeded unauthorised through the gates.
As the afternoon wore on it became evident visits would not be enabled and that we were being lied to. We soon learned from an Asylum Seeker who we made contact with by phone that the detainees had been told by Serco management that we were ‘not coming’. They did not believe this and despaired. Some fifty of the advocates civilly approached the fence and we spoke with the Serco frontline employees. Conflicting explanations and depictions were deployed on behalf of Serco management.
I phoned the Centre manager on his mobile from outside the gate however on this occasion someone else answered. I asked that Michael Puglisi, the Serco employed Centre manager, come to the fence to discuss the situation rather than exploit his personnel whose job it was not to defend Serco management decisions. Prosocially I argued this case with the Serco staff at the gates who most appeared to be in a drone like state bar one individual who expressed his ethos of care for the detainees and who appeared to well with tears.
Eventually Michael Puglisi, Curtin Detention Centre manager drove to the fence to meet us, however remained on the other side of the barricade, and did not unlock the gate. Throughout the discussions with many of us he often contradicted himself and clearly demonstrated an agenda to inhibit the visits. At times Serco officers had explained to us that they had not received our visitor application forms, however Michael could not speak in this light as I had scanned and emailed forms to him and had spoken to him over the phone and had his acknowledgment of the forms in writing. However he disgraced himself by declaring that it was not possible for any visits to occur on the Saturday. This outrage incurred the frustration and disappointment of the civil advocates. Unperturbed Michael used a number of excuses, that appeared concocted, to describe why this could not happen, this including that new constructions were underway and one on one meeting rooms were not available and that evening visits were not possible because of the onset of poor lighting issues.
However these were disproved as we learned visits by others who they did not know knew us and were part of us, however they had joined us from the eastern states, arriving earlier, were occurring and continued into the evening.
I explained to Michael that they were only exacerbating tensions in the Detention Centre and that these lies would backfire however at the price of human life. Ultimately he insisted that some visits would be scheduled for Sunday and Monday however he would make us aware of them on the Sunday morning and not before.
I asked Michael if he had been instructed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to inhibit our right to visit our Asylum Seekers and therefore their right to be met by us. His body language indicated this was the case however he remained silent on the question insisting that he would organise some visits. He then changed his language to as many visits as possible. I asked him if it was true that Serco management, of which he is the Manager, told the detainees that we were ’not coming’. He seemed startled by this revelation however he firmly denied any knowledge of this. However we have it evidently that this is the case.
The detainees urged Serco officers and management for the visits to be upheld. They even organised today (Saturday) for a petition for them to proceed signed by 700 Asylum Seekers trapped, incarcerated in the Curtin Detention Centre. There are now 300 Asylum Seekers protesting at Serco’s and DIAC’s actions with a Hunger Strike. Serco’s and DIAC’s deliberate mismanagement has created an unwarranted and unnecessary situation and has directly led to a Hunger Strike and the potential for protests.
Some of 50 of us have camped nearby, and will arrive at Curtin Detention first thing in the morning, 7am for the visits. The visits must occur so we can continue to shine the light on the plight of those wrongly, immorally and cruelly incarcerated in these concentration like camps. The world must know what we witnessed and endured today and what our Asylum Seekers are enduring in these facilities, which are wrapped in cultures of secrecy and silence. You had to be here to see it to believe it. We do not know what Easter Sunday holds however we hope that a significant number of visits eventuate. We will not go away, and we will come again and again.
We have arrived at Curtin Detention, a place that wrongfully incarcerates 1500 souls, armed only with 1500 Easter eggs, bi-lingual dictionaries, books and gifts. We have been treated by Serco, DIAC, the AFP and ADF with a disregard for humanity. Their conduct is a threat to a civil and just society.
Australians are a caring people and we need to unveil our racial layers, end our racism, refuse to be hostile to those seeking Asylum and allow the caring that is in Australians to not be hindered by ignorances, prejudices, biases and other evil. We are better than this.
Our journey of 2,500 kilometres pales to a mere raindrop when compared to the Homeric Odyssies of our Asylum Seekers.
