Modernity Blog: Anti-Atzmon Zio-Nazi Racist Propaganda

NOVANEWS

The Racist, Gilad Atzmon And Zero Books.

modernityblog *

Apparently, the racist? Gilad Atzmon is about to have some of his disgusting ramblings published.

The publishers, Zero Books, are a small, relatively new enterprise started in 2009, not to be confused with Zero Press.

Atzmon’s work is very popular on the Far Right, so I had assumed that only active Jew haters ? would take the time and trouble to publish his filth, but that’s not the case.

Zero Books publish a strange mixture of Paganism, New Ageism and Christianity, with political material as a topping.

This is what they say about themselves, replete with elementary spelling mistakes.

It is not terribly clear who’s behind it, but if you’re interested in healing properties of stones and other such nonsense then Crystal Prescriptions will surely be of interest!

But back to the rational world.

Concerning this issue, there is a kerfuffle on various blogs as to why a publisher of Leftwing authors (and I use the term loosely) should be publishing a racist like Gilad Atzmon.

Many of these posts raise interesting questions, but as far as I can see they fail to analyse with any precision why this situation came about.

What would compel otherwise highly intelligent people (book publishers, etc) to print propaganda for a racist?

Could it be that they conceivably agree with his views? That they share some of his prejudices? And if so, why?

And whilst those questions are answered, it would be nice if these issues could be addressed:

Why, latterly, has anti-Jewish racism become so acceptable in Western societies?

What brought this terrible state of affairs about?

There needs to be clear analysis as to why the publishing of the racist Gilad Atzmon came about, not just the details of events, but a broader commentary is needed on why his views are deemed fit for publishing by the intelligentsia and what does that tell us about anti-Jewish sentiment in society?

Gilad’s new book launches in October

THE WANDERING WHO?

A Study of Jewish Identity Politics

by Gilad Atzmon

‘A transformative story told with unflinching integrity that all (especially Jews) who care about real peace, as well as their own identity, should not only read, but reflect upon and discuss widely.’ Richard Falk

‘Atzmon has the courage – so profoundly lacking among Western intellectuals’ James Petras

BACK COVER TEXT:

Jewish identity is tied up with some of today’s most difficult and contentious issues. The purpose of this book is to open up many of these issues for discussion. It examines Jewish identity politics and Jewish contemporary ideology using both popular culture and scholarly texts. Since Israel defines itself openly as the ‘Jewish State’, we should ask what the notions of Judaism, Jewishness, Jewish culture and Jewish ideology stand for.

Atzmon analyses secular Jewish political and cultural discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist. He looks at the Jewish political attitude towards history and time, the role of the holocaust, anti-gentile ideologies, Jewish pressure groups, Zionist lobbying and more. The current state of world affairs raises an urgent need for a change in our attitudes towards politics, identity politics and history.

Gilad Atzmon is an internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist and composer, a member of the Blockheads, and fronts the Orient House Ensemble. His two novels Guide to the Perplexed and My One and Only Love as well as his political and cultural essays are published widely in many languages. He lives in London.

Endorsements:

‘Gilad Atzmon has written an absorbing and moving account of his journey from hard core Israeli nationalist to a de-Zionized patriot of humanity and passionate advocate of justice for the Palestinian people. It is a transformative story told with unflinching integrity that all (especially Jews) who care about real peace, as well as their own identity, should not only read, but reflect upon and discuss widely.’

Professor Richard Falk, Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law Emeritus, Princeton University, author of over 20 books, and UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestinian Territories.

‘Gilad Atzmon has written a fascinating and provocative book on Jewish identity in the modern world. He shows how assimilation and liberalism are making it increasingly difficult for Jews in the Diaspora to maintain a powerful sense of their ‘Jewishness.’ Panicked Jewish leaders, he argues, have turned to Zionism (blind loyalty to Israel) and scaremongering (the threat of another Holocaust) to keep the tribe united and distinct from the surrounding goyim. As Atzmon’s own case demonstrates, this strategy is not working and is causing many Jews great anguish. The Wandering Who? should be widely read by Jews and non-Jews alike.’

John J. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago

‘Gilad Atzmon’s book, The Wandering Who? is as witty and thought provoking as its title. But it is also an important book, presenting conclusions about Jews, Jewishness and Judaism which some will find shocking but which are essential to an understanding of Jewish identity politics and the role they play on the world stage.’

Karl Sabbagh is a journalist, television producer and the author of several books including A Rum Affair, Power Into Art, Dr Riemann’s Zeros and Palestine: A Personal History. He is currently the publisher of Hesperus Press

‘Gilad Atzmon‘s The Wandering Who? is a series of brilliant illuminations and critical reflections on Jewish ethnocentrism and the hypocrisy of those who speak in the name of universal values and act tribal. Relying on autobiographical and existential experiences, as well as intimate observations of everyday life, both informed by profound psychological insights, Atzmon does what many critics of Israel fail to do; he uncovers the links between Jewish identity politics in the Diaspora with their ardent support for the oppressive policies of the Israeli state.

Atzmon provides deep insights into “neo-ghetto” politics. He has the courage – so profoundly lacking among western intellectuals – to speak truth to the power of highly placed and affluent Zionists who shape the agendas of war and peace in the English-speaking world. With wit and imagination, Atzmon’s passionate confrontation with neo-conservative power grabbers and liberal yea sayers sets this book apart for its original understanding of the dangers of closed minds with hands on the levers of power.

This book is more than a “study of Jewish identity politics” insofar as we are dealing with a matrix of power that affects all who cherish self-determination and personal freedom in the face of imperial and colonial dictates.’

Professor James Petras, Bartle Professor of Sociology at Binghamton University, New York, author of more than 62 books including The Power of Israel in the United States.

‘Atzmon’s insight into the organism created by the Zionist movement is explosive. The Wandering Who? tears the veil off of Israel’s apparent civility, its apparent friendship with the United States, and its expressed solicitude for Western powers, exposing beneath the assassin ready to slay any and all that interfere with its tribal focused ends.’

Professor William A. Cook, Professor of English at the University of La Verne in southern California, and author of The Rape Of Palestine.

‘The Wandering Who? features Gilad Atzmon at his delightful and insightful best: engaging, provocative and persuasive.’

Jeff Gates, author of Guilt By Association: How Deception and Self-Deceit Took America to War

‘The Wandering Who? is a pioneering work that deserves to be read and Gilad Atzmon is brave to write this book!’

Dr. Samir Abed-Rabbo, author and Professor Emeritus in the field of international law. He is director of the Center for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Brattleboro, Vermont and the former Dean of The Jerusalem School for Law and Diplomacy.

NOVANEWS

The evidence is clear and reminds us of similar, colonial-era nations, including Australia, desperate to prove the morality of its ethnic cleansing: (via the UKObserver):

Nurit Peled-Elhanan, an Israeli academic, mother and political radical, summons up an image of rows of Jewish schoolchildren, bent over their books, learning about their neighbours, the Palestinians. But, she says, they are never referred to as Palestinians unless the context is terrorism.

They are called Arabs. “The Arab with a camel, in an Ali Baba dress. They describe them as vile and deviant and criminal, people who don’t pay taxes, people who live off the state, people who don’t want to develop,” she says. “The only representation is as refugees, primitive farmers and terrorists. You never see a Palestinian child or doctor or teacher or engineer or modern farmer.”

Peled-Elhanan, a professor of language and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has studied the content of Israeli school books for the past five years, and her account, Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education, is to be published in the UK this month. She describes what she found as racism– but, more than that, a racism that prepares young Israelis for their compulsory military service.

“People don’t really know what their children are reading in textbooks,” she said. “One question that bothers many people is how do you explain the cruel behaviour of Israeli soldiers towards Palestinians, an indifference to human suffering, the inflicting of suffering. People ask how can these nice Jewish boys and girls become monsters once they put on a uniform. I think the major reason for that is education. So I wanted to see how school books represent Palestinians.”

In “hundreds and hundreds” of books, she claims she did not find one photograph that depicted an Arab as a “normal person”. The most important finding in the books she studied – all authorised by the ministry of education – concerned the historical narrative of events in 1948, the year in whichIsrael fought a war to establish itself as an independent state, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled the ensuing conflict.

The killing of Palestinians is depicted as something that was necessary for the survival of the nascent Jewish state, she claims. “It’s not that the massacres are denied, they are represented in Israeli school books as something that in the long run was good for the Jewish state. For example, Deir Yassin [a pre-1948 Palestinian village close to Jerusalem] was a terrible slaughter by Israeli soldiers. In school books they tell you that this massacre initiated the massive flight of Arabs from Israel and enabled the establishment of a Jewish state with a Jewish majority. So it was for the best. Maybe it was unfortunate, but in the long run the consequences for us were good.”

Children, she says, grow up to serve in the army and internalise the message that Palestinians are “people whose life is dispensable with impunity. And not only that, but people whose number has to be diminished.”

Afghanistan: 22 Seals Murdered to Keep Them Quiet!

Osama Killing gets more shroud

s

Some Possibly Killed in Abbottabad Helicopter Crash Months Before

 By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor

Today 31 NATO troops, 22 of them Navy Seals from the Osama bin Laden operation died in what is reported as a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The chances of this story being true is almost nil.  The chances of this being a staged coverup is over 80%.  We believe these people were murdered to silence them.  This is why.

We have solid information on two areas:

  1. Osama bin Laden died in 2001 as an active CIA employee and his body was recovered in Afghanistan and taken to “the sand box.”  We were told it was frozen.  We have so much verification from this, CIA, ISI, US military and top officials.  I have a direct confirmation from Bin Laden’s CIA handler who I grilled mercilessly on this.

  2. The Abbottabad operation involved numerous American deaths, witnessed, bodies all over, a helicopter crash.  These bodies were recovered by land vehicle from Islamabad and there was NO “successful” bin Laden operation of any kind.  There was and has been a CIA safe house in Abbotabad where terror suspects were stored for years.

This gave the US several areas of severe vulnerability.  Generally, Navy Seals are the best people in the world at keeping their mouths shut, these are real team players, as the term “Seal Team” belies.

We at VT were informed that the bin Laden operation was staged at this time, a theatrical farce, to cover the exit of Secretary Gates, the move by former CIA Director Leon Panetta into the DOD as Secretary of Defense and to stem any heroic claims by new CIA Director Petraeus of killing the long dead Osama bin Laden, the long frozen CIA operative.

Petraeus is a possible presidential contender and had to be denied this “gift from heaven,” a fast track to the oval office for sure.

Again, I remind you, I went over specific meetings on bin Laden with his handlers, getting every last detail.  I have watched what has gone on, the continuing need to vilify a long dead top CIA operative to provide residual cover for the Bush administration….

The reason?  Bush and his cronies are all facing charges of war crimes, not just in minor jurisdictions but heading for the ICC, putting them on the dock with Gaddafi ( a far less harmful character).

As for the timing of this incident?  This we will work on.  What we can easily surmise is that some of the dead have been dead since their bodies were taken away from the helicopter crash site in Abbotabad.

Who would order such a thing?  We are going to have to wait but we are going to find out.  However, we expected this, the timing is exactly as predicted.

HOW VT TRIED TO SAVE THEM

When the phony Abbotbad operation came out, I immediately understood what happened.  I also saw much potential good from it other than the tragedy of the dead Americans from the crash.  I wrote of this and see their deaths as more heroic than many recognize.

They died to erase for all time remnants of the Bush era fairly tale of badguy and evildoer Osama bin Laden.  Enough good men had died chasing a ghost who lived only in phony video and audio tapes by “Bin Laden Studios” in Tel Aviv and in the continual “boogeyman” rhetoric of professional fearmongers.

Not long afterward, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, another able public servant announced the near defeat of Al Qaeda, another Bush fairly tale.

Al Qaeda has never existed, there are no magic worldwide terror conspiracies other than those run by governments.  There are several of those and I have written extensively on these.  Google will help you with this if you are curious.

When VT saw why the government staged this, we saw we could accomplish two things:

  1. We could simply report the truth for those willing to believe it, something we believe is the right thing to do.

  2. We could also support the United States in a very real way, knowing Pakistan would weather this crisis, timed, in some ways, as a face saving move in response to the embarrassing Raymond Davis affair.  I believed if the truth came out, clear enough for insiders, intel and miliary for sure, to understand that we knew and other insiders knew, there would be no reason to “clean house” afterward, to stage a coverup and get rid of any involved.

I had felt that we had provided cover for the Seal Team, we hadn’t trashed them, we acknowledged the dead at Abbotabad where no one else bothered, this is our job as fellow members of America’s military forces (current and former).

More importantly, we got out word, I certainly did enough radio and TV on this, enough that, for anyone who care, the “truth was out there.”

This is all we could do but I hoped it would stem a need for covering tracks.  After all, anyone leaking real information on the operation would only seem like they had gotten it from me and I put it out there in such a manner that I allowed room to be “debunked.”

I do this to protect myself but I really was thinking of them.  These are great guys, Seals are among the best people on earth.  The Seal and Special Forces communities are, of the military groups in the US, some of the finest people I know.

They also help cover my “behind,” which I appreciate.

This is just too obvious, too brazen.  I can’t imagine it started at the White House or even cabinet level but maybe I am deluding myself.  Bin Laden was all about the election.

After the bond collapse and credit disaster yesterday, anything threatening President Obama’s reelection is seen, by some, as a threat to America’s financial survival.  This debt crisis is a bigger threat to the US than a Japanese invasion in 1942 would have been.

You may not see it that way and you certainly cant get out your hunting rifle to fix it. (Don’t be a sap, kill a Jap!)

Someone had gotten to someone.  My best guess and this is a guess…an expose’ by the mainstream media, perhaps Murdoch, another guess, conjecture I admit, regarding the farce at Abbottabad, information possibly gotten through spying, bribery and blackmail, threatened to take down Obama.

With Murdoch’s good friend and “monkeyboy,” Netanyahu ‘on the ropes,” with crowds marching in Israel’s streets demanding his ouster, we have more timing to factor in.

The bin Laden killing, the third rate drama of capturing an unarmed frozen dead guy and throwing him into the ocean had probably become an albatross around certain high ranking necks.

Norway was no accident, it was a warning too.  It has been containerized, just as the Murdoch espionage issue is now “poor Rupert and the pie thrower.”

These Americans are casualties in a game, one like 9/11, sacrificial pawns, like Britain’s 7/7, all lies, all theatre, all evil.

This is not for public consumption.  There are those who know exactly who I am talking to.

There are many of us here who still keep our mouths shut about so many things.  There are too many who don’t even care, most of us at VT do.  Yes, I am aware I can be jailed, I am aware my passport can be pulled, I already see the damned surveillance.

Amateurs.

We aren’t anti-American.  I am simply sick of seeing solutions that go one direction, stealing everything that isn’t nailed down.  I am also sick of the fact that Washington can’t visit the “head’ without Israel’s permission.

This…today, this is too much. It is unforgivable.  We are not going to allow this to stand.

We have a long standing history of “cleaning house” after operations of this kind.  Usually its dead senators in plane crashes, heart attacks, car wrecks, like the Minot Barksdale or 9/11 incidents.  I could name a dozen more.  Does the name Wheeler meaning anything to you?  Anyone remember Pat Tillman?

But this many?

The shift in Turkey is not only from Military to Civilian supremacy but it’s also a move towards Islamisation.

By: KhaIid Iqbal

Pakistan and Turkey have been emulating each other’s civil-military relations model in a somewhat cyclic pattern. Both countries have had an equal number of military takeovers to their (dis)credit; and unfortunately, both also went through the gruesome saga of hanging an elected Prime Minster each. Two countries have political and national security structures with identical strengths and weaknesses. Some of Pakistan’s military rulers idealized the Turkish model; and some Turkish coup makers took cues from military take overs in Pakistan.

Recent low intensity mutiny in Turkey manifested in the form of collective resignation of top brass has stimulated an academic interest to gauge the possibility of achieving a sustainable civilian supremacy in Pakistan and Turkey.

Turkey has lived under the shadow of military control since the era of Kamal Ataturk.  Visibly it came under military domination since 1960 when Prime Minister Adnan Menderes’ government was toppled in a coup; a year later, he was convicted by a military court and hanged. Suleyman Demirel’s government was overthrown by another coup in 1971. Third military intervention in 1980 resulted in re-writing the Turkish constitution that firmly institutionalized military’s indulgence in the domain of civilian governments.  Military again stepped in, to overthrow Necmettin Erbakan’s Islamic coalition in 1997 on the presumption that he was planning to change the secular character of the constitution into an Islamic one, and checkmating the military interference in the civilian domain.

After a snowballing standoff with the ruling Justice and Progress Party (AKP), Turkey’s army chief General Isik Kosaner resigned alongside the navy and air force chiefs. General Kosaner stepped down after several meetings with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ahead of a scheduled meeting of the army’s high command to decide promotions for senior officers. Friction between the government and military was fuelled by an ongoing trial targeting dozens of senior military officers accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

Explaining in his farewell message, General Kosaner said, “The long-term investigation and arrests aim always to keep the Turkish Armed Forces on agenda, to create public opinion against it and non-objective mass media spread false information to put the nation against its armed forces. It is impossible for me to continue my duties in this high post because this situation prevents me to defend the rights of men who are under my command.” If the generals had been betting on public outcry, the lack of uproar shows just how far Prime Minister Erdogan has advanced in his struggle to subordinate the military to civilian political leadership.

Political leadership was prompt to cease the opportunity, quickly new military chiefs were appointed. This event has triggered the speculation that a tamer phase in Turkish military’s history is on the cards. “The era in Turkey when the military made political decisions is over,” says leading Hurriyet columnist Cengiz Candar.

This is indeed a defining moment for Turkey. It may put an end to military’s craving for overthrowing the civil governments. The AKP has emerged as a strong democratic government and enjoys good credibility at home as well as abroad.

Turkish Military subscribes to Kemalist secularism and has taken upon itself to navigate Turkey on secular path. Military coups in Turkey have persistently weakened the religious movements. It was a close call for the current government when it narrowly escaped an attempt to constitutionally out-law it in 2008; this was followed by a series of unsuccessful military plots to overthrow the government.

The AKP has held the sway for the last eight years mainly because of its superb economic performance and improved public services following years of financial instability. The growth rate last year was 8.9 per cent, the second highest among G-20 nations after China. It also went to the public through a referendum and has won the mandate to reform the constitutional court. AKP is on its way to amend the 1980 constitution. Prime Minister has indicated that he would consult even those political parties which are not a part of the current parliament.

Prime Minister Erdogan is promoting a movement for moderate Islam and is setting up his country as an example of success for Muslims. At least for the time being he has demonstrated that the military no longer wields the veto power it once held over Turkish politics.

The credit for the transformation of the Turkish scene goes to Mr Erdogan. He avoided the mistakes committed by his mentor, the late Necmettin Erbakan, who formed party after party each time it was banned. His mistake was that he clashed with the generals directly without realising that Turkey had secularism deeply entrenched not only in the armed forces but also in the judiciary, politics, media and the academia. Mr Erdogan was more cautious. He declared that he accepted secularism. During his first term he avoided taking the military head on. Gradually, during the second term, he started denting the mandate of the powerful Security Council, headed by a general. This he combined with an undiluted commitment to Turkey’s pro-European orientation.

The AKP government is more powerful than ever before, it is maintaining a single-party monopoly of power for a third consecutive tenure. No wonder, the generals find it difficult to tamper with a civilian government with a record of spectacular successes. Generals opted to quit out of deeply ingrained arrogance, as they just could not allow themselves to stay in their posts and behave like fetch boys of an elected government!

Without a shadow of doubt, civilian power is now supreme in Turkey, though sustainability of new found equilibrium would depend upon continued good performance by successive civilian governments as well the mindset of succeeding generals.

In 2002, Turkey suffered from almost all the ills that Pakistan is facing today. A sinking economy, political instability, ‘junta’ dominated civil-military equation and polarized societies were the hall-marks of Turkish landscape.  Can Pakistan go the Turkish way? Not in short to medium time frame. Yes it is doable in long term provided our political system could prop up successive strong single party governments meeting the high performance benchmarks. As the judiciary has disciplined itself by declaring that its no judge will take oath under a PCO, political parties also need to formulate an honour code for not cohabitating with any coup maker. Political Parties Act needs to take care of disproportionate political clout that has been incrementally acquired by relatively smaller political parties and groups. There is a need to support the strengthening of a strong two party system for the sake of stable and potent governments in Pakistan. At the same time there is a need to correct the distortions of our Higher Defence Organization.

For Turkey and Pakistan it’s indeed a journey of a thousand miles fraught with fragile and reversible gains; yet each journey begins with the first step!

More contortions on the neocons

NOVANEWS
A review of Maria Ryan’s “Neoconservatism and the New American Century”By Stephen J. Sniegoski

Yet another book on the neocons from a mainstream publisher has recently appeared that – like the works of Danny Cooper and Justin Vaïsse – acknowledges the neoconservatives’ influence, especially in regard to Bush administration policy, while avoiding the obvious fact that the neocons’ policy in the Middle East rested on their ethnic identification with the Jewish state of Israel. That study is Neoconservatism and the New American Century, by Maria Ryan, a lecturer in American history at the University of Nottingham in England. Palgrave MacMillan published the book in 2010.

In eschewing the obvious, Ryan engages, even more than the other two authors, in contorted and spurious arguments, including some where the evidence she provides actually refutes her own arguments and instead gives credence to the neocons’ ethnic bias.

While failing to discuss the palpable ethnic motive for the neocons’ Middle East policy, Ryan’s work must be credited for refuting the popular argument that the neocons were motivated by a desire to export democracy – that they were “Jacobins” or “Wilsonians.” She writes:

“The central focus of this book is to demonstrate that the purported neoconservative preoccupation with moral ideals and especially ‘exporting democracy’ … was almost entirely abstract and rhetorical, if it was present at all. Where neocons did invoke idealistic rhetoric (and it is usually in the abstract rather than the practical), the caveats and conditions that they added to it all but ruled out military intervention in the service of democracy or any other moral ideals, although … some of them acknowledge that the rhetoric is useful for the galvanizing effect it has on the public.”(p. 5)

Instead, she maintains, the “neocons have always prioritized interests over ideals.” (p. 6) She provides a number of telling examples to show that
democratic idealism was far from being the cynosure of neoconservative foreign-policy thinking.

In contrast to the theory of democracy promotion, Ryan writes that “a central argument of this book is that neoconservatism should be evaluated on the basis that it was a strategy dedicated to preserving and extending America’s supposed position as the single pole of world power.” (p. 6) That effort to “ensure that the United States remained the single pole of power in every region of the world,” Ryan terms “unipolarism,” holding that “unipolarism thus constituted the new defining strategic and ideological touchstone for neoconservatism in the post-Cold War period – and, indeed, the two terms ‘neoconservatism’ and ‘unipolarism’ would become almost … synonymous.” (p 2)

Ryan is not alone in describing the neocons as “unipolarist.” Gary Dorrien, in his Imperial Designs: Neoconservatism and the New Pax Americana [*], characterizes the neocons as fundamentally unipolarist; and, in fact, the neocons themselves actually used the term. As Dorrien writes at the very beginning of Imperial Designs: “In the waning months of the cold war, shortly before an expiring Soviet Union finally disintegrated, a group of neoconservative policymakers and intellectuals began to argue that the moment had come to create an American-dominated world order. Some of them called it ‘the unipolarist imperative.'” (p. 1) Ryan cites Dorrien’s work but fails to mention his discussion of unipolarism,” only classifying him as one of those scholars who hold that “neoconservatism is characterized by the desire to ‘export democracy.'” (pp. 4, 192) (I discuss Dorrien’s “unipolarist” argument in The Transparent Cabal, on pp. 368, where I use arguments that would be equally applicable to Ryan.)

Ryan questions the idea that there was anything particularly unique about neocon foreign-policy views, maintaining that “the neocons merely accentuated existing trends in U.S. foreign policy; they did not overturn them.” For example, she holds that their differences with the foreign policy of the Clinton administration were only in terms of degree. (p.9)

If unipolarism defines neoconservatism, and if unipolarism essentially means American military pre-eminence on a global scale, then it would be reasonable to say that the neoconservatives fit into the dominant mode of American foreign-policy thinking along with most realists and liberal internationalists. But that typological classification is too broad, failing to specify what particular interventionist policies are to be pursued. Most of those who could be classified as unipolarists would part company with the
neocons in regard to the laters’ policy of unconditional support for Israel, war on Iraq, and an overall Middle East war agenda, which the former held would have deleterious effects on America’s overall global stature.

As illustrated in The Transparent Cabal, the neocon-inspired war on Iraq provoked extensive resistance from elite foreign-policy opinion outside the administration, the State Department bureaucracy, the CIA, and the military brass. In large part, that opposition reflected the fact that the neocon goal of destabilizing the Middle East flew in the face of the traditional U.S. policy of maintaining regional stability in order to facilitate the flow of oil, which was crucial for the economic strength of the United States and its allies. Moreover, Saddam’s Iraq seemed to pose no serious threat to the United States, a fact that later became clear when no evidence could be found to substantiate the claims about Saddam’s lethal WMDs.

Ryan applies her non-uniqueness argument to the neocons’ unconditional support for Israel. “A special attachment to Israel was nothing new in post-1945, and especially post-1967 U.S. foreign policy,” Ryan asserts. She does acknowledge that “the neoconservative attachment to Israel appeared to be even stronger than [the] usual [support from other elements of the foreign-policy mainstream] because of the amount of time and resources [the neocons] dedicated to supporting it … even though it was no longer needed as a bulwark against communism in the Middle East.” (p. 32-33)

Some commentators, Ryan observes, argue that the neocons were motivated by their Jewish ethnicity or special identification with Israel to the extent that they put Israeli interests equal to or above those of the United States. She simply responds that “there may be some truth to these arguments, but it is virtually impossible to discern private religious or ethnic motivations.” (p. 33)

Here Ryan just makes an assertion without going over, much less refuting, the specific evidence used to substantiate the ethnic bias/Israel argument. I devote a substantial part of The Transparent Cabal to documenting that very thesis. Ryan definitely should have been aware of the evidence for the argument, because the indefatigable James Morris had maintained correspondence with her and sent her a copy of my book. Beyond acknowledging to Morris that she had received the book, she ceased further correspondence with him despite his efforts to contact her. Nowhere in her book does she
refer to The Transparent Cabal.

It is possible, though unlikely, that her book, published in November 2010, was too far along the publication route for her to use or even cite mine, which was published in August 2008. However, it would seem incumbent upon any scholar to deal with the information from already published sources that illustrated the neocons’ ethnic orientation.

Chatter: 9/11, Fringe Science and Disclosure

Is Fantasy Now a Reality, Has it Always Been?

By Gordon Duff Senior Editor

There is a cult within the intelligence community, those who chase the brass ring, the highest level of security of any documents or programs. Even presidents have been denied access.

Our only connection to that “other world” is television, shows like Fringe and the dozens of TV shows and hundreds of films based on the Majestic 12 documents. Few are aware that shows like X Files or films like Independence Day or Close Encounters of the Third Kind are based on evidence with an aspect of discernible authenticity. Did you catch my use of “weasel words” there?

For decades we have been bombarded with UFO stories, tales of government mind control, secret death rays, mysterious aircraft “reverse engineered” from flying saucers, nuclear weapons the size of baseballs, it never ends.

With the rise of anti-government feeling, rage and anger, some of it carefully engineered from the inside out of something more than partisanship but as an obvious tool to undermine public participation in democracy, we call it “the Murdoch effect,” conspiratorialism has become a disease. It is also a tool of deception.

At one time the FBI infiltrated, first organized crime, then trade unions, then the Klan and now, they are after 9/11 Truth, environmental groups and, particularly, any political group that, no matter how peaceful, espouses creation of a 3rd party.

The top of the list, however, is free journalism and the internet.

Julian Assange – Praying for What?

For a short time, Julian Assange was a hero. Crooked politicians called for his extradition and imprisonment. His associate Bradley Manning is still a political prisoner, no question about that.

But revelations about Assange and his connections to Israel, the New York Times and his admissions of bias and censorship, ended that.

Independent analysis of Wikileaks found valuable material for sure but only enough to sell the real product, phony intelligence in Iran and Pakistan and clear manipulation of world politics in favor of long range Israeli goals.

Assange, to those of us in media who yearned for a hero, someone like Ken O’Keefe, but with real “insider access” left us disappointed. We felt betrayed.

One of the last things Assange did of note, not writing him off yet however, after all, he hasn’t gotten a stake through the heart, was to hint at the release of UFO files. He says he has them.

Something you don’t know about happened. A Scottish systems administration, a computer guru named Gary McKinnon, back in the early 2000′s, hacked top NASA and Defense Department computers. Though the US claims he destroyed files and accessed secrets, perhaps he knows where Iraq’s WMD’s really went to. That’s cheap cover.

In fact, the stories about McKinnon ring like the tales of superspy Jonathan Pollard, the Israeli touted with stealing “chickenfeed” but getting a life sentence with top intelligence and defense officials threatening “bombshells” if Pollard is released, even though Prime Minister Netanhayu has begged for “mercy” for Pollard.

The truth? Pollard spied, not for Israel but “through Israel,” for the Soviets, causing over 1100 US agents, CIA and assets to be arrested, tortured and killed. Information Pollard sold to the Soviet Union, we have since learned, nearly drove them to a nuclear “first strike” against the United States.

This is how governments lie, no secrets there.

McKinnon got the “motherlode.” He got UFO files. Now, you will love this one, our secret squirrel agencies are so creative. What we have leaked is that McKinnon got records that prove America has a “10th Fleet” of interstellar battleships, right out of Star Trek.

Sounds to me like he may have hacked the gradebooks at Star Fleet Academy, perhaps trying to get a Bush family member a slot on the USS Enterprise on one of those “5 year missions,” you know the ones, where they meet aliens, explore new planets and have sex with new and unusual species.

Of course that goes on in Washington all the time anyway, all of it.

This is where “sources” come in.  We can’t access Assange’s UFO files, ones we are told talk about secret bases in Antarctica and Chile, that outline UFO wars over Mexico, oddly somewhat supported by video evidence.

A few weeks ago, Veterans Today covered a UFO siting, filmed with an IPhone, over Central London.  We laughed about it but we also filed it away. The Londoners staring up at this weren’t part of the “tin foil hat” brigade. It’s not about whether or not “they” are intelligent life but rather whether we are.

McKinnon became “public enemy number one,” not for stealing files that tell a story nobody will ever believe, I sure don’t. He has something else, this is what “sources” tell us. We’re going to look at where the chatter goes and discuss the even greater significance of “disclosure.”

We know the US government lied about Iraq. Some of us know bin Laden died long ago. Most accept that John F. Kennedy was murdered by 3 snipers, my guess working for FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. My guesses are “better than average.” Check on that.

Scandals like Watergate brought down a government with almost nothing while Iran Contra, something a thousand times more serious, narcotics and arms trading by the White House, disappeared from history.

9/11 is the grand daddy of all scandals, a long exposed and admitted coverup that would expose the US government in a scandal so evil, so frightening that its severity alone is what protects it. There may even be more to this story, something we will be getting back to.

For adequate background, something needed early on, on the direction conspiracy theory is heading, the Richard Dolan video, a very long presentation, is probably worth watching.

I will preface the link by saying that I teach classes in debunking phony intelligence. This is one of my niches in life, the result, very truthfully, of being an idiot and learning to laugh at myself. There is no better school than the University of Life.

I have bought an education there few can approach. When I am accused of spying by such as Jonathan Kay, I nearly laugh myself to death.

What is the most important thing is being able to pick facts or reasonable assumptions from things others want you to believe. Here is a free lesson:

If it sounds good, confirms your suspicions and makes you want to act, send money to someone or vote for some idiot, you are being lied to.

Anyway, here is the Dolan piece. What is dangerous about it is this:

The parts that are most boring or most unpleasant are most likely true. I don’t know Dolan, don’t know his motives but “sources” high in security agencies say that this video has upset people very much.

As for why, we are going to discuss this and perhaps a bit of what McKinnon found as well.

YouTube – Veterans Today –

The “chatter” involves “disclosure.”  Disclosure means America admitting that there is something much more critical than flying saucers and the dreaded “anal probe.”  Disclosure means, as Dolan suggests, that we have had a secondary technical capability that only creeps into our daily lives when it passes an economic filter.

This is the supposition:

Alien technology has been recovered, perhaps by Germans during World War 2, I have had “leaks” confirming this, no, not the V2 or the ME262, but things much more advanced.  America is said to have such technology, has had it for decades and certain aspects of it are used in technologies we are using now.

Others are kept “black.” The confirmations received verify that we do have “alien technology.”

Let’s talk a bit of history. I mentioned Majestic 12. Don’t bother looking it up, OK, try but you will be driven in circles. Many years ago, I was made privy to a heavily redacted document, US government, highly classified, that made mention of space aliens, flying saucer crashes, “men in black,”…in fact several seasons of X Files.

Feel free to Google Majestic 12 and read what you can find. However, real documents leaked on the internet in the early 1990s have been surgically removed.

They were a nasty read, worse than if Dick Cheney had a diary claiming he ordered 9/11. Majestic 12 talks about a treaty with aliens. We get technology and they get people. They get people. From the read of it, the “anal probe” would have been a kindness. The whole thing could be a fabrication though some documents have passed rigorous vetting.

Heading from possible “wild conjecture” to more solid ground, if such exists in an area like this, technology is at the heart of the discussion. These are the high impact common technologies that “sources” say exist:

  • Gravity drive; These systems are said to be mechanical, capable of being duplicated with common mid-20th century technology and to allow flight of vehicles with “non airworthy” characteristics and performance that would normally turn occupants into hamburger were the drives not to have some aspect of eliminating the detrimental effects of passenger mass in relationship to normal Newtonian forces. The economic impact has nothing to do with travel. If you can fly, you can also power an automobile or a power generating station. There are no limits. Overnight, hydrocarbons, coal, oil and gas, are worthless as is nuclear power.

  • Advanced physics, fission, fusion and particle beam energy; Reports “not made” by defense research facilities in the US, “do not tell” of advances in physics making fission, power generation or weapons capability, possible by achieving “critical mass” with grams, rather than kilograms of “weapons grade” nuclear material. These projects went “dark” over 20 years ago and, at that time, indicated discoveries so profound as to be earth shattering. Rumors of development of fission capabilities and particle weapons, we will call them wild rumors, developments long enough ago for “real world” applications to exist.

YouTube – Veterans Today –

This is pure Hollywood. The question, however, is a more “gentle” version capable of bringing down aircraft, affecting weather or, perhaps dropping the occasional large public building?

Were this so, have they been keeping their “physics” under wraps, whether to save the auto industry, keep big oil going, stir up new wars or simply out of some sickness, a madness that having the power of the g-ds at ones fingertips is known to bring? Could these technologies exist now? Have they existed for decades?

Truman Lied, Hundreds of Thousands Died

NOVANEWS
by David Swanso

n

On August 6, 1945, President Harry S Truman announced: “Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima, an important Japanese Army base. That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of T.N.T.  It had more than two thousand times the blast power of the British ‘Grand Slam’ which is the largest bomb ever yet used in the history of warfare.”

When Truman lied to America that Hiroshima was a military base rather than a city full of civilians, people no doubt wanted to believe him. Who would want the shame of belonging to the nation that commits a whole new kind of atrocity? (Will naming lower Manhattan “ground zero” erase the guilt?)  And when we learned the truth, we wanted and still want desperately to believe that war is peace, that violence is salvation, that our government dropped nuclear bombs in order to save lives, or at least to save American lives.

We tell each other that the bombs shortened the war and saved more lives than the some 200,000 they took away. And yet, weeks before the first bomb was dropped, on July 13, 1945, Japan sent a telegram to the Soviet Union expressing its desire to surrender and end the war. The United States had broken Japan’s codes and read the telegram. Truman referred in his diary to “the telegram from Jap Emperor asking for peace.” Truman had been informed through Swiss and Portuguese channels of Japanese peace overtures as early as three months before Hiroshima. Japan objected only to surrendering unconditionally and giving up its emperor, but the United States insisted on those terms until after the bombs fell, at which point it allowed Japan to keep its emperor.

Presidential advisor James Byrnes had told Truman that dropping the bombs would allow the United States to “dictate the terms of ending the war.” Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal wrote in his diary that Byrnes was “most anxious to get the Japanese affair over with before the Russians got in.” Truman wrote in his diary that the Soviets were preparing to march against Japan and “Fini Japs when that comes about.” Truman ordered the bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th and another type of bomb, a plutonium bomb, which the military also wanted to test and demonstrate, on Nagasaki on August 9th. Also on August 9th, the Soviets attacked the Japanese. During the next two weeks, the Soviets killed 84,000 Japanese while losing 12,000 of their own soldiers, and the United States continued bombing Japan with non-nuclear weapons. Then the Japanese surrendered.

The United States Strategic Bombing Survey concluded that, “… certainly prior to 31 December, 1945, and in all probability prior to 1 November, 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.”  One dissenter who had expressed this same view to the Secretary of War prior to the bombings was General Dwight Eisenhower. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral William D. Leahy agreed: “The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender.”

Whatever dropping the bombs might possibly have contributed to ending the war, it is curious that the approach of threatening to drop them, the approach used during a half-century of Cold War to follow, was never tried.  An explanation may perhaps be found in Truman’s comments suggesting the motive of revenge:

“Having found the bomb we have used it. We have used it against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Harbor, against those who have starved and beaten and executed American prisoners of war, and against those who have abandoned all pretense of obeying international law of warfare.”

Truman could not, incidentally, have chosen Tokyo as a target — not because it was a city, but because we had already reduced it to rubble.

The nuclear catastrophes may have been, not the ending of a World War, but the theatrical opening of the Cold War, aimed at sending a message to the Soviets. Many low and high ranking officials in the U.S. military, including commanders in chief, have been tempted to nuke more cities ever since, beginning with Truman threatening to nuke China in 1950. The myth developed, in fact, that Eisenhower’s enthusiasm for nuking China led to the rapid conclusion of the Korean War. Belief in that myth led President Richard Nixon, decades later, to imagine he could end the Vietnam War by pretending to be crazy enough to use nuclear bombs. Even more disturbingly, he actually was crazy enough. “The nuclear bomb, does that bother you? … I just want you to think big, Henry, for Christsakes,” Nixon said to Henry Kissinger in discussing options for Vietnam.

President George W. Bush oversaw the development of smaller nuclear weapons that might be used more readily, as well as much larger non-nuclear bombs, blurring the line between the two. President Barack Obama established in 2010 that the United States might strike first with nuclear weapons, but only against Iran or North Korea. The United States alleged, without evidence, that Iran was not complying with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), even though the clearest violation of that treaty is the United States’ own failure to work on disarmament and the United States’ Mutual Defense Agreement with the United Kingdom, by which the two countries share nuclear weapons in violation of Article 1 of the NPT, and even though the United States’ first strike nuclear weapons policy violates yet another treaty: the U.N. Charter.

Americans may never admit what was done in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but our country had been in some measure prepared for it. After Germany had invaded Poland, Britain and France had declared war on Germany.  Britain in 1940 had broken an agreement with Germany not to bomb civilians, before Germany retaliated in the same manner against England — although Germany had itself bombed Guernica, Spain, in 1937, and Warsaw, Poland, in 1939, and Japan meanwhile was bombing civilians in China. Then, for years, Britain and Germany had bombed each other’s cities before the United States joined in, bombing German and Japanese cities in a spree of destruction unlike anything ever previously witnessed. When we were firebombing Japanese cities, Life magazine printed a photo of a Japanese person burning to death and commented “This is the only way.”

By the time of the Vietnam War, such images were highly controversial. By the time of the 2003 War on Iraq, such images were not shown, just as enemy bodies were no longer counted. That development, arguably a form of progress, still leaves us far from the day when atrocities will be displayed with the caption “There has to be another way.”

Combating evil is what peace activists do. It is not what wars do. And it is not, at least not obviously, what motivates the masters of war, those who plan the wars and bring them into being. But it is tempting to think so. It is very noble to make brave sacrifices, even the ultimate sacrifice of one’s life, in order to end evil. It is perhaps even noble to use other people’s children to vicariously put an end to evil, which is all that most war supporters do.  It is righteous to become part of something bigger than oneself. It can be thrilling to revel in patriotism. It can be momentarily pleasurable I’m sure, if less righteous and noble, to indulge in hatred, racism, and other group prejudices. It’s nice to imagine that your group is superior to someone else’s. And the patriotism, racism, and other isms that divide you from the enemy can thrillingly unite you, for once, with all of your neighbors and compatriots across the now meaningless boundaries that usually hold sway.

If you are frustrated and angry, if you long to feel important, powerful, and dominating, if you crave the license to lash out in revenge either verbally or physically, you may cheer for a government that announces a vacation from morality and open permission to hate and to kill. You’ll notice that the most enthusiastic war supporters sometimes want nonviolent war opponents killed and tortured along with the vicious and dreaded enemy; the hatred is far more important than its object. If your religious beliefs tell you that war is good, then you’ve really gone big time. Now you’re part of God’s plan. You’ll live after death, and perhaps we’ll all be better off if you bring on the death of us all.

But simplistic beliefs in good and evil don’t match up well with the real world, no matter how many people share them unquestioningly. They do not make you a master of the universe. On the contrary, they place control of your fate in the hands of people cynically manipulating you with war lies.

And the hatred and bigotry don’t provide lasting satisfaction, but instead breed bitter resentment.

Breaking News: “Bin Laden” Heroes Probably Murderered to Keep Them Quiet

NOVANEWS

Some Possibly Killed in Abbottabad Helicopter Crash Months Before

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor

Today 31 NATO troops, 20 of them Navy Seals from the Osama bin Laden operation died in what is reported as a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

Will We Ever Know What Happened?

Abbotabad – How Many Died Here?

Osama in Better Days

Ramadan Observance in Afghanistan

NOVANEWS

by Zabi Rashidi

Media Summary

Images showing Afghani Muslims during their observance of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, which involves fasting, prayer and purification and is intended to teach patience, humility, and spirituality. Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. 5th August 2011

The Holy Ramzaa

n

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which lasts 29 to 30 days. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating and drinking and is intended to teach Muslims about patience, humility, and spirituality. Muslims fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayer than usual. Compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards by about eleven days each year depending on the moon; thus, a person will have fasted every day of the calendar year in 34 years’ time. Muslims believe Ramadan to be an auspicious month for the revelations of God to humankind, being the month in which the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Islamic prophet, Muhammad.

 Origins of Ramadan

The word Ramadan is derived from an Arabic root rmḍ, as in words like “ramiḍa” or “ar-ramaḍ” denoting intense heat, scorched ground and shortness of rations. Ramadan, as a name for the month, is of Islamic origin. Prior to Islam and the exclusion of intercalary days from the Islamic calendar, the name of the month was Natiq and the month fell in the warm season. The word was thus chosen as it well represented the original climate of the month and the physiological conditions precipitated from fasting. In the Qur’an, God proclaims that “fasting has been written down (as obligatory) upon you, as it was upon those before you”. According to the earliest hadith, this refers to the Jewish practice of fasting on Yom Kippur.

The Beginning of Ramada

n

Hilal (the crescent) is typically a day (or more) after the astronomical new moon. Since the new moon indicates the beginning of the new month, Muslims can usually safely estimate the beginning of Ramadan.

There are many disagreements each year however, on when Ramadan starts. This stems from the tradition to sight the moon with the naked eye and as such there are differences for countries on opposite sides of the globe. More recently however, some Muslims are leaning towards using astronomical calculations to avoid this confusion.

For the year of 1432 Hijri, the first day of Ramadan was determined to be August 1, 2011.

Practices during Ramadan

Fasting

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’an was sent down – right Guidance to mankind, and clear signs of Guidance and Distinction of truth from falsehood. Those among you, who witness it, let him fast therein. Whoever is sick or on a journey, then a number of other days. God desires ease for you, and desires not hardship. Thus may you fulfill the number of days assigned, magnify God for having guided you, and perhaps you will be thankful.

Ramadan is a time of reflecting, believing and worshiping God. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam and to avoid obscene and irreligious sights and sounds. Sexual intercourse is allowed after you have ended your fast. During fasting intercourse is prohibited because as well as eating and drinking, one is also encouraged to resist all temptations while you are fasting. Purity of both thoughts and actions is important. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm. It also teaches Muslims to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; thus encouraging actions of generosity and charity (Zakat.

Muslims should start observing the fasting ritual upon reaching the age of puberty, so long as they are healthy, sane and have no disabilities or illnesses. The elderly, the chronically ill, and the mentally ill are exempt from fasting, although the first two groups must endeavor to feed the poor in place of their missed fasting. Also exempt are pregnant women if they believe it would be harmful to them or the unborn baby, women during the period of their menstruation, and women nursing their newborns. A difference of opinion exists among Islamic scholars as to whether this last group must make up the days they miss at a later date, or feed poor people as a recompense for days missed. While fasting is not considered compulsory in childhood, many children endeavour to complete as many fasts as possible as practice for later life. Lastly, those traveling (musaafir) are exempt, but must make up the days they miss. More specifically, Twelver Shiah define those who travel more than 14 mi (23 km) in a day as exempt.

Prayer and reading of the Qur’an

In addition to fasting, Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Qur’an. Some Muslims perform the recitation of the entire Qur’an by means of special prayers, called Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a whole section of the Qur’an (Juz’, which is 1/30 of the Qur’an) is recited. Therefore the entire Qur’an would be completed at the end of the month.

Ramadan is also a time when Muslims are to slow down from worldly affairs and focus on self-reformation, spiritual cleansing and enlightenment; this is to establish a link between themselves and God through prayer, supplication, charity, good deeds, kindness and helping others. Since it is a festival of giving and sharing, Muslims prepare special foods and buy gifts for their family and friends and for giving to the poor and needy who cannot afford it; this can involve buying new clothes, shoes and other items of need. There is also a social aspect involving the preparation of special foods and inviting people for Iftar.

Ifta

r

Muslims all around the world will abstain from food and drink, through fasting, from dawn to sunset. At sunset, the family will gather the fast-breaking meal known as Iftar. The meal starts with the eating of a date — just as Prophet Muhammad used to do. Then it’s time for the Maghrib prayer, which is the fourth of the five daily prayers, after which the main meal is served. In many homes, this is a simple meal of fruits and vegetables along with traditional Middle Eastern fare.

Eid ul-Fitr

The holiday of Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan and the first day of the following month, after another new moon has been sighted. The Eid falls after 29 or 30 days of fasting, per the lunar sighting. Eid ul-Fitr means the Festival of Breaking the Fast; a special celebration is made. Food is donated to the poor (Zakat al-fitr); everyone puts on their best, usually new, clothes; and communal prayers are held in the early morning, followed by feasting and visiting relatives and friends. The prayer is two Raka’ah only, and it is obligatory (Wajib) prayer as opposed to the compulsory (Fard) five daily prayers. Muslims are expected to do this as an act of worship, and to thank God.

Unconditional Support for IsraHell is Profoundly Damaging to Americans

NOVANEWS

It is time to end our aid to IsraHell

by Alison Weir

For decades the Israel Lobby, the most powerful special interest on behalf of a foreign nation in the United States, has dominated U.S. policy-making in the Middle East.

As a result, American policies under both Republican and Democratic administrations have been created that do not represent American strategic, economic, or political interests. They are also contrary to the deepest principles of our founders and our citizenry.

U.S. Aid to Israel: Funding our Decline

On April 1st I participated in a debate in San Francisco that raised the question of US aid to Israel.

It was highly appropriate that this debate was held two weeks before tax day, since in Israel’s sixty years of existence, it has received more US tax money than any other nation on earth.

During periods of recession, when Americans are thrown out of work, homes are repossessed, school budgets cut and businesses fail, Congress continues to give Israel massive amounts of our tax money; currently, about 7 million dollars per day.

On top of this, Egypt and Jordan receive large sums of money (per capita about 1/20th of what Israel receives) to buy their cooperation with Israel; and Palestinians also receive our tax money (about 1/23rd of that to Israel), to repair infrastructure that Israeli forces have destroyed, to fund humanitarian projects required due to the destruction wrought by Israel’s military, and to convince Palestinian officials to take actions beneficial to Israel. These sums should also be included in expenditures on behalf of Israel.

When all are added together, it turns out that for many years over half of all US tax money abroad has been expended to benefit a country the size of New Jersey.

It is certainly time to begin debating this disbursement of our hard-earned money. It is quite possible that we have better uses for it.

To decide whether the US should continue military aid to any nation, it is essential to examine the nature and history of the recipient nation, how it has used our military aid in the past, whether these uses are in accord with our values, and whether they benefit the American taxpayers who are putting up the money.

1. What is the history and nature of Israel?

Describing Israel is always difficult. One can either stay within the mainstream paradigm, or tell the truth. I will opt for the truth.

Drawing on scores of books by diverse authors, the facts are quite clear: Israel was created through one of the most massive, ruthless, and persistent ethnic cleansing operations of modern history. In 1947-49 about three-quarters of a million Muslims and Christians, who had originally made up 95 percent of the population living in the area that Zionists wanted for a Jewish state, were brutally forced off their ancestral land. There were 33 massacres, over 500 villages were completely destroyed, and an effort was made to erase all vestiges of Palestinian history and culture.

The fact is that Israel’s core identity is based on ethnic and religious discrimination by a colonial, immigrant group; and maintaining this exclusionist identity has required continued violence against those it has dispossessed, and others who have given them refuge.

2. How has Israel used our military aid in the past?

In all of its wars except one, Israel has attacked first.

In violation of the Arms Export Control Act, which requires that US weapons only be used in “legitimate self defense,” Israel used American equipment during its two invasions of Lebanon, killing 17,000 the first time and 1,000 more recently, the vast majority civilians. It used American-made cluster bombs in both invasions, again in defiance of US laws, causing the “most hideous injuries” one American physician said she had ever seen, and which, in one day in 1982 alone, resulted in the amputation of over 1,000 mangled limbs.

It has used US military aid to continue and expand its illegal confiscation of land in the West Bank and Golan Heights, and has used American F-16s and Apache Helicopters against largely unarmed civilian populations.

According to Defence for Children International, Israel has “engaged in gross violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.” Between 1967 and 2003, Israel destroyed more than 10,000 homes, and such destruction continues today. A coalition of UK human rights groups recently issued a report stating that Israel’s blockade of Gaza is collective punishment of 1.5 million people, warning: “Unless the blockade ends now, it will be impossible to pull Gaza back from the brink of this disaster and any hopes for peace in the region will be dashed.”

In addition, Israel uses US military aid to fund an Israeli arms industry that competes with US companies. According to a report commissioned by the US Army War College, “Israel uses roughly 40 percent of its … military aid, ostensibly earmarked for purchase of US weapons, to buy Israeli-made hardware. It also has won the right to require the Defense Department or US defense contractors to buy Israeli-made equipment or subsystems, paying 50 to 60 cents on every defense dollar the US gives to Israel.”

Israel has used US aid to kill and injure nonviolent Palestinian, American and international activists, as well as American servicemen. Israeli soldiers in an American-made Caterpillar bulldozer crushed to death 23-year-old Rachel Corrie; an Israeli sniper shot 21-year-old Tom Hurndall in the head; Israeli soldiers shot 26-year-old Brian Avery in the face. In 1967 Israel used US-financed French aircraft to attack a US Navy ship, killing 34 American servicemen and injuring 174.

Israel has used US aid to imprison without trial thousands of Palestinians and others, and according to reports by the London Times and Amnesty International, Israel consistently tortures prisoners; including, according to Foreign Service Journal, American citizens.

3. Are these uses in accord with our national and personal values?

Not in my view.

4. Do these uses of US aid benefit American taxpayers?

While some Israeli actions have served US interests, the balance sheet is clear: Israel’s use of American aid consistently damages the United States, harms our economy, and endangers Americans.

In fact, this extremely negative outcome was so predictable that even before Israel’s creation virtually all State Department and Pentagon experts advocated forcefully against supporting the creation of a Zionist state in the Middle East. President Harry Truman’s reply: “I am sorry gentlemen, but I have to answer to hundreds of thousands who are anxious for the success of Zionism. I do not have hundreds of thousands of Arabs among my constituents.”

Through the years, as noted above, our aid to Israel has not resulted in a reliable ally.

In 1954 Israel tried to bomb American targets in Egypt, intending to pin this on Muslims.

In 1963 Senator William Fulbright discovered that Israel was using a series of covert operations to funnel our money to pro-Israel groups in the US, which then used these funds in media campaigns and lobbying to procure even more money from American taxpayers.

In 1967 Israeli forces unleashed a two-hour air and sea attack against the USS Liberty, causing 200 casualties. While Israel partisans claim that this was done in error, this claim is belied by extensive eyewitness evidence and by an independent commission reporting on Capitol Hill in 2003 chaired by former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Thomas Moorer.

In 1973 Israel used the largest airlift of US materiel in history to defeat Arab forces attempting to regain their own land, triggering the Arab oil embargo that sent the US into a recession that cost thousands of Americans their jobs.

During its 1980s Lebanon invasion, Israeli troops engaged in a systematic pattern of harassment of US forces brought in as peacekeepers that created, according to Commandant of Marines Gen. R. H Barrow, “life-threatening situations, replete with verbal degradation of the officers, their uniform and country.”

Through the years, Israel has regularly spied on the US. According to the Government Accounting Office, Israel “conducts the most aggressive espionage operations against the United States of any ally.” Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger said of Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard: “It is difficult for me… to conceive of greater harm done to national security,” And the Pollard case was just the tip of a very large iceberg; the most recent operation coming to light involves two senior officials of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Israel’s powerful American lobbying organization.

Bad as the above may appear, it pales next to the indirect damage to Americans caused by our aid to Israel. American funding of Israel’s egregious violations of Palestinian human rights is consistently listed as the number one cause of hostility to Americans.

While American media regularly cover up Israeli actions, those of us who have visited the region first-hand witness a level of US-funded Israeli cruelty that makes us weep for our victims and fear for our country. While most Americans are uninformed on how Israel uses our money, people throughout the world are deeply aware that it is Americans who are funding Israeli crimes.

The 9/11 Commission notes that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s “…animus towards the United States stemmed…from his violent disagreement with U.S. foreign policy favoring Israel.” The Economist reports that “… the notion of payback for injustices suffered by the Palestinians is perhaps the most powerfully recurrent theme in bin Laden’s speeches.”

The Bottom Line

In sum, US aid to Israel has destabilized the Middle East; propped up a national system based on ethnic and religious discrimination; enabled unchecked aggression that has, on occasion, been turned against Americans themselves; funded arms industries that compete with American companies; supported a pattern of brutal dispossession that has created hatred of the US; and resulted in continuing conflict that last year took the lives of 384 Palestinians and 13 Israelis, and that in the past seven and a half years has cost the lives of more than 982 Palestinian children and 119 Israeli children.

By providing massive funding to Israel, no matter what it does, American aid is empowering Israeli supremacists who believe in a never-ending campaign of ethnic cleansing; while disempowering Israelis who recognize that policies of morality, justice, and rationality are the only road to peace.

It is time to end our aid.

Stealing Success Tel Aviv Style

by Philip Giraldi, Executive Director, Council for the National Interest

Spy Trade — How Israel’s Lobby Undermines America’s Economy

A curious op-ed “The Tel Aviv Cluster” by the reliably neoconnish David Brooks appeared in the New York Times on January 12th. Brooks enthused over the prowess of Israel’s high tech businesses, attributing their success in large part to Jewish exceptionalism and genius, which must have provided the ultimate feel good moment for Brooks, who is himself Jewish.

That Israel has a booming technology sector is undeniably true, but Brooks failed to mention other contributing factors such as the $101 billion dollars in US economic and military aid over the course of more than four decades, which does not include the additional $30 billion recently approved by President Barack Obama.

American assistance has financed and fueled Israel’s business growth while the open access and even “preferential treatment” afforded to Israeli exporters through the Israel Free Trade Implementation Act of 1985 has provided Israelis with the enormous US market to sell their products and services. By act of Congress, Israeli businesses can even bid on most American Federal and State government contracts just as if they were US companies.

Brooks was characteristically undisturbed by the fact that American taxpayer subsidized development of Israeli enterprises combined with the free access to the US economy and government contracts eliminates jobs and damages competing companies on this side of the Atlantic.

And there is another aspect of Israel’s growing high tech sector that he understandably chose to ignore because it is extremely sleazy. That is the significant advantage that Israel has gained by systematically stealing American technology with both military and civilian applications. The US developed technology is then reverse engineered and used by the Israelis to support their own exports with considerably reduced research and development costs, giving them a huge advantage against American companies.

Sometimes, when the technology is military in nature and winds up in the hands of a US adversary, the consequences can be serious. Israel has sold advanced weapons systems to China that are believed to incorporate technology developed by American companies, including the Python-3 air-to-air missile and the Delilah cruise missile. There is evidence that Israel has also stolen Patriot missile avionics to incorporate into its own Arrow system and that it used US technology obtained in its Lavi fighter development program, which was funded by the US taxpayer to the tune of $1.5 billion, to help the Chinese develop their own J-10 fighter.

The reality of Israeli spying is indisputable. Israel always features prominently in the annual FBI report called “Foreign Economic Collection and Industrial Espionage.” The 2005 report states, “Israel has an active program to gather proprietary information within the United States. These collection activities are primarily directed at obtaining information on military systems and advanced computing applications that can be used in Israel’s sizable armaments industry.” It adds that Israel recruits spies, uses electronic methods, and carries out computer intrusion to gain the information. The 2005 report concluded that the thefts eroded US military advantage, enabling foreign powers to obtain expensive technologies that had taken years to develop.

A 1996 Defense Investigative Service report noted that Israel has great success stealing technology by exploiting the numerous co-production projects that it has with the Pentagon. “Placing Israeli nationals in key industries …is a technique utilized with great success.” A General Accounting Office (GAO) examination of espionage directed against American defense and security industries described how Israeli citizens residing in the US had stolen sensitive technology to manufacture artillery gun tubes, obtained classified plans for a reconnaissance system, and passed sensitive aerospace designs to unauthorized users.

An Israeli company was caught monitoring a Department of Defense telecommunications system to obtain classified information, while other Israeli entities targeted avionics, missile telemetry, aircraft communications, software systems, and advanced materials and coatings used in missile re-entry.

The GAO concluded that Israel “conducts the most aggressive espionage operation against the United States of any US ally.” In June 2006, a Pentagon administrative judge overruled an appeal by an Israeli who had been denied a security clearance, stating, “The Israeli government is actively engaged in military and industrial espionage in the United States. An Israeli citizen working in the US who has access to proprietary information is likely to be a target of such espionage.”

More recently, FBI counter intelligence officer John Cole has reported how many cases of Israeli espionage are dropped under orders from the Justice Department. He provides a “conservative estimate” of 125 worthwhile investigations into Israeli espionage involving both American citizens and Israelis that were stopped due to political pressure from above.

Two recent stories that have been reported in the Israeli media but are strangely absent from the news on this side of the Atlantic demonstrate exactly what is going on and what is at stake.

The first story confirms that Israeli efforts to obtain US technology are ongoing. Stewart David Nozette, a US government scientist who was arrested on October 19, 2009 in an FBI sting operation after offering to spy for Israel has been waiting in jail to go to trial on espionage charges. New documents in the case were presented in the Federal court in Washington last week. The documents confirm that Nozette was a paid consultant for Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) and it is believed that he passed to them classified material in return for an estimated $225,000 in consulting fees. Examination of his computer by the FBI revealed that he was planning a “penetration of NASA” the US space agency and that he was also trying to crack into other scientists’ computers to obtain additional classified material. Other documents demonstrate that he was cooperating with two Israeli scientists who were administrators with IAI, Yossi Weiss and Yossi Fishman. Nozette made several trips to Israel without reporting them, which he was required to do because of his high security clearance. The FBI reportedly also has incriminating letters and other documents that were obtained from the computer.

The second story relates to the pending sale of twenty-five F-35 fighter planes to Israel. The F-35 is one of the most advanced fighter planes in the world. The $130 million planes would be purchased with US military assistance money, which means they would effectively be a gift from the US taxpayer. But Israel is balking at the sale reportedly because it wants to install some of its own local content in the aircraft. The Pentagon has already made some concessions but is disinclined to grant approval for all the changes because to do so would require giving the Israelis full access to the plane’s advanced avionics and computer systems. Israel also wants to independently maintain the aircraft, which would also require access to all systems. It would be nice to think that the Pentagon wants to keep the maintenance in American hands to preserve jobs, but the Defense Department has never cared about US workers before when the issue is Israel, and the real reason for the standoff is that Lockheed-Martin and the Pentagon both know that Israel will steal whatever it can if it gains access. It would then use the technology to market its own products at a price below that of US defense contractors. The result would be a triple whammy for Uncle Sam: the expensive planes are given to Israel free, the technology is then stolen, and future sales vanish as our Israeli friends market their knock down versions of weapons systems reliant on the stolen technology.

So to David Brooks I would say that there is most definitely an economic surge taking place in high tech Israel, but it is less a miracle than the fruit of a long series of thefts and manipulations fueled by American tax money and the connivance of a Congress that is always willing to do favors for the country that it appears to love beyond all others. I’m sure most Americans would wish the Israelis well and would applaud the prosperity that derives from their own industry and inventiveness but it is also time to put the brakes on business as usual and to take the Israeli hand out of our pocket. I’m sure Brooks’ job is pretty secure and well paid, but many Americans are out of work and suffering, so let’s take some steps to protect our economy from the information thieves from Tel Aviv and keep our money and jobs over here.

Britain’s IsraHell Lobby

Interestingly, Britain’s foreign policy is also heavily influenced by a powerful Israel lobby.

On Nov. 16, 2009 Britain’s Dispatches program on Channel 4 broadcast a documentary about the power of the Israel Lobby in the UK.

Its website provides the following synopsis on the film, which was produced by Peter Osborne:

Dispatches investigates one of the most powerful and influential political lobbies in Britain, which is working in support of the interests of the State of Israel.

Despite wielding great influence among the highest realms of British politics and media, little is known about the individuals and groups which collectively are known as the pro-Israel lobby.

Political commentator Peter Oborne sets out to establish who they are, how they are funded, how they work and what influence they have, from the key groups to the wealthy individuals who help bankroll the lobbying.

He investigates how accountable, transparent and open to scrutiny the lobby is, particularly in regard to its funding and financial support of MPs.

The pro-Israel lobby aims to shape the debate about Britain’s relationship with Israel and future foreign policies relating to it.

Oborne examines how the lobby operates from within parliament and the tactics it employs behind the scenes when engaging with print and broadcast media.

The station also produced a detailed pamphlet on the subject. Below is the film:
