FRENCH MOTHER, 32, SET TO BECOME FIRST WOMAN TO BE JAILED FOR WEARING BANNED ISLAMIC VEIL

Facing jail: Hind Ahmas, left, could be sentenced to two years in prison for wearing a banned Islamic head covering in France

A 32-year-old mother from France is set to become the first woman ever to be sent to prison for wearing an Islamic veil.

Hind Ahmas refuses to accept the legitimacy of a Paris court which has ordered her to spend 15 days learning her civic duties.

She was sentenced by magistrates in Meaux, a Paris suburb, yesterday – after being arrested wearing an outlawed veil outside the Elysee Palace in the French capital on April 11.

That was shortly after Nicolas Sarkozy’s government introduced a ban on all forms of Islamic head coverings, including the niqab and the burka.

Ahmas was not allowed into the hearing at Meaux Criminal Court because she refused to remove her face covering.

But prosecutors made it clear to her lawyer, Gilles Devers, that Ahmas now faces two years in prison and a £27,000 fine.

‘There is no possibility of me removing the veil,’ Ahmas said.

‘I’m not taking it off. The judge needs citizenship lessons, not me.’

Ahmas, who has already refused to pay a fine of around £100 for wearing a veil on another occasion, intends to take her case to the European Court of Human Rights.

She has launched a pressure group, Do Not Touch My Constitution, along with Kenza Drider, another veil wearer who wants to run for president in the Spring.

If Ahmas does become the first woman in the world to go to prison for wearing a veil, then it will be seen as a huge propaganda coup for Islamic-rights campaigners.

Mr Sarkozy said the ban on head coverings was not aimed at persecuting Muslims, but merely to make France a more tolerant, inclusive society.

When it was introduced, he said the ban was aimed at stopping criminals – from terrorists to shoplifters – disguising their faces from security staff and CCTV.

But the sight of a young mother being led away to the cells merely because she refuses to take off her veil will cause outrage around the world.

Mr Devers said the veil ban was ‘unconstitutional’, while senior police officers have told judges that it is unenforceable without persecuting women.

France became the first country in Europe to outlaw the veil, while similar legislation has since been passed in Belgium and Holland.

One has been mooted in Britain by a number of politicians, including Conservative backbenchers, but there are no immediate plans to introduce one.

EZBOLLAH TO THE CIA: WE ARE WATCHING YOU

HNOVANEWS

The CIA in Lebanon is going into damage control after  Hezbollah recently exposed more details about alleged CIA activities. Many are, however, asking why Hezbollah went public with such valuable information.

The CIA’s alleged station chief in Lebanon, Daniel Patrick Mcfeely, called on a number of his ‘friends’ last week. Evidently his aim was to try to reduce the impact of Hezbollah’s latest series of revelations about US intelligence activity in Lebanon.

According to details leaked from these meetings, Mcfeely maintained that everything that has been published about the affair is unfounded – not just the claims made by Hezbollah and its secretary general, but also the reports in the US press quoting official Washington sources.

He stressed that the CIA does not normally confirm or deny reports about its clandestine activities. But his interlocutors do not recall him commenting on the fact that official sources in his country did confirm the reports from Lebanon and Iran that CIA networks had been uncovered by Hezbollah and Iranian intelligence.

Mcfeely also reportedly said that the Beirut station he heads is not in the business of recruiting and running networks of agents in Lebanon, but confines its activities to liaising and exchanging information with Lebanese security agencies.

The alleged CIA station chief’s damage control exercise aside, the key question in this affair relates to Hezbollah. Why has it chosen to go public with the information its intelligence apparatus collected about US spying activities in Lebanon?

Hezbollah’s Manar TV channel screened a documentary last Friday which featured alleged details of the identities of US intelligence officers operating in Lebanon, their modus operandi, and some of the locations where handlers would meet their agents.

It also claimed that the information the CIA tasks its agents to gather in Lebanon is routinely passed on to Israeli intelligence, and that the American agents handed control of some of their Lebanese networks over to the Israelis.

Sources familiar with Hezbollah’s thinking see these revelations as being aimed at sending out a number of messages.

The first and most obvious message they see is that Hezbollah’s intelligence apparatus knows about the CIA’s activities in Lebanon, and has its officers and agents under surveillance and control.

Second, that the US administration is Israel’s partner in crimes committed on Lebanese soil – whether waging wars, or carrying out bombings and assassinations.

The third signal these sources think Hezbollah may be trying to send is that US diplomatic activity in Lebanon is inseparable from intelligence activities – and that this makes it incumbent on the Lebanese state to take appropriate measures.

The fourth and perhaps the loudest message may be that it is no longer permissible for the CIA to act as an adjunct for Israeli intelligence in Lebanon, as has been the case since the 1980s.

According to these sources this also applies to the other Western intelligence agencies that extend information and ‘logistical’ support to the Israelis – such as facilitating travel by Israeli intelligence agents from Lebanon to Europe to meet their handlers.

This support has been provided by Western embassies in Beirut, as has been documented in Lebanese judicial investigations of many cases in which people have been arrested on suspicion of spying for Israel.

A further possible explanation posited by these sources is that the resistance wants to force the Americans to have to rethink the basis and aims of their entire intelligence operation in Lebanon – and to keep them busy for a long time: assessing the damage they sustained, re-vetting their agents, reviewing their procedures, and trying to find the breach which the resistance used to expose some of their actions.

The sources stressed that the actual means employed by the resistance will be kept a closely guarded secret.

Hezbollah MP Nawwaf al-Mousawi’s appearance on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) Monday seemed very much in line with the above. Providing further details of the case, Mousawi said CIA agents in Lebanon had been given hi-tech devices that can be concealed in watches or phones, used for pinpointing certain locations.

He stressed that this was not just about gathering information, but preparing for acts of terrorism and aggression, be they assassinations, bombings, or future Israeli military assaults.

Mousawi also revealed that US intelligence agents used to frequently meet with their agents in restaurants and nightclubs in Dbayeh and Jounieh, north of Beirut, after first attempting to cover their tracks in the Byblos area.

He had a blunt message for the Americans and their agents: “We know what they are doing, and we can reach further. To the agents who are under surveillance, we say they have an opportunity to surrender themselves to the resistance’s security apparatus or the Lebanese security agencies.”

ZIO-NAZI SET ALIGHT MOSQUE IN JERUSALE

NOVANEWS

NAZI’S IN JERUSALEM

Haaretz

Arsonists set fire to a deserted mosque in central Jerusalem during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. There was no structural damage reported and the damage mainly consisted of the blackening of walls and graffiti reading “Price Tag,” and anti-Islamic phrases.

The Nebi Akasha mosque, apparently built under the Ayyubid dynasty in the 12th century with additions made under the Mamluk dynasty in the 13th century. It is believed that the mosque was founded on the burial site of combatants in Saladin’s army, though an ancient tradition designates the site as the place where Akasha, a friend of the Prophet Muhammad, was buried.

The mosque is uniquely located in central Jerusalem in the midst of a Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. It was abandoned in the Israeli War of Independence. Its was recently renovated and turned into a municipal storage facility.

Graffiti spray painted on the historical site included inscriptions such as “Muhammad is Dead,” “Muhammad is a Pig,” and “Price Tag.”

The Jerusalem municipality closed off the entrance to the mosque, and the police and Shin Bet began an investigation.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat denounced the act adding that adding zero tolerance should be shown to violence of any kind, and that coexistence in the city must be kept at all costs.

On Thursday, last week, residents of the Palestinian village of Burkina discovered that two vehicles were torched overnight, and that there had been attempt to burn the local mosque as well, succeeding only in burning its entrance. In this incident graffiti of a similar nature was also spray-painted on the mosque walls.

After an arson attack on a mosque at Tuba-Zangaria in northern Israel in early October, the police assigned a team of the International and Serious Crimes Unit (ISCU) to investigate arson cases. Some so-called ‘hilltop youth’ said that at first they feared the ISCU but after many suspects were arrested only to be subsequently released, their fear subsided.

In the arson of the Tuba-Zangaria mosque, the entire interior of the went up in flames, causing heavy damage, and holy books inside the mosque were burned. Graffiti with the words “price tag” was also found on its walls.

In an earlier incident, a mosque in the West Bank village of Qusra, south of Nablus, was set on fire in June, hours after Israeli police officers destroyed three illegal structures in the settlement outpost of Migron.

RUSSIA ACCUSES WEST OF ‘IMMORAL’ STANCE ON SYRIA

NOVANEWS

Russia’s foreign minister has accused the West of an “immoral” stance on Syria, saying it should condemn the opposition as well as security forces.

bbc.com

Sergei Lavrov said opposition groups were trying to provoke a “humanitarian catastrophe” to get foreign help.

The comments came after UN human rights chief Navi Pillay told the Security Council Syria should be referred to the International Criminal Court over its crackdown on the nine-month uprising.

She said 5,000 people had been killed.

In October, Russia and China vetoed a Security Council resolution condemning Syria. The draft, introduced by France and the UK, was supported by other Western countries.

On Tuesday Mr Lavrov defended an alternative text drafted by Russia and China which urges both sides in the conflict to refrain from violence.

He described as “immoral” the position of “those who refuse to exert pressure on the armed, extremist, part of the opposition and at the same time accuse us of blocking the work of the Security Council”.

Mr Lavrov said opposition forces in Homs had attacked hospitals and schools.

He added: “To me it is clear that the purpose is to provoke a humanitarian catastrophe, to get a pretext to demand external interference into this conflict.”

Russia has accused Western countries of using the UN to try to force regime change in Syria.

// Navi Pillay on Syria crackdown: “Five-thousand killed, including 300 children.”

‘Crimes against humanity’

Meanwhile, clashes between Syrian security forces and army defectors appear to be intensifying in the north of the country.

Syrian activists on Tuesday said deserters had killed seven soldiers in an ambush in Idlib province.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told the BBC the attack had been in revenge for the killing of 11 civilians by government forces earlier in the day.

In New York, UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay told a closed session of the Security Council that 300 children had been among those killed since the start of the uprising in March.

She also said 14,000 people were believed to have been arrested, and 12,400 had fled to neighbouring countries.

“It is based on the evidence and the widespread and systematic nature of the killings, the detentions and the acts of torture that I felt that these acts constituted crimes against humanity and I recommended that there should be a referral to the International Criminal Court,” Ms Pillay said on Monday.

She said her estimate of more than 5,000 deaths did not include security forces. The Syrian government has said more than 1,000 of its police and troops have been killed.

The Syrian ambassador at the UN, Bashar Jaafari, said Ms Pillay had “allowed herself to be misused in misleading the public opinion by providing information based on allegations collected from 233 defectors”.

It is difficult to confirm the casualty toll in Syria because there are no independent monitors on the ground and international journalists have been denied access to the country.

Wiesenthal Center names top 10 anti-Semitic slurs

A comment by Mahmoud Abbas referring to Palestine as the “holy land” placed first in the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Top 10 Anti-Israel/Anti-Semitic Slurs of 2011.

The Palestinian Authority president made the remark at the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 23.

“I come before you today from the Holy Land, the land of Palestine, the land of divine messages, ascension of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and the birthplace of Jesus Christ peace be upon him, to speak on behalf of the Palestinian people,” he said.

The Wiesenthal Center said it did not consider statements by terrorist organizations, the Iranian government or “the lunatic fringe.”

Other remarks that made the Top 10 list included Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s accusation that “hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were killed” by Israel; Christian Dior fashion designer John Galliano’s rant about his love of Hitler; and director Lars Von Trier, who said he sympathizes a bit with Hitler and that “Israel is a pain in the ass.”

“These 10 examples constitute a fraud alert from people who should know better who have crossed the line,” said Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Wiesenthal Center.

PANETTA SAYS DRONE CAMPAIGN OVER IRAN WILL CONTINUE

NOVANEWS

Fox News

Defense Secretary Leon  Panetta, in an exclusive interview with Fox News, said that the stealth  drone campaign along the Iran-Afghanistan border will “absolutely” continue  despite the loss of a valuable and sophisticated drone to Iran.

The mysterious loss of the RQ-170 Sentinel drone has  revealed not only that the U.S. was spying on Iran, but also that the program  was being run from Shindad Air Base in western  Afghanistan.

Panetta would not comment directly on what that  drone was doing over Iran, but he said the U.S. military has no plans to halt  the drone operation out of western Afghanistan.

“Those operations have to be protected in order to  do the job and the mission that they’re involved with,” he said.

When asked if he would continue those missions as  they have been conducted out of Afghanistan, he responded with one word:  “Absolutely.”

Panetta would not speculate about whether the  Sentinel drone had been felled by a cyber attack or a high-tech jamming  device.

“You can make all kinds of guesses at this point.  Obviously there’s nothing that you can rule out and nothing that you can rule in  right now,” he said.

President  Obama said on Monday he would not comment on the situation beyond saying the  U.S. has asked to Iranians to give it back. “We we will see how the Iranians  respond,” he said.

Panetta will travel later this week to Baghdad  for a ceremony to mark the end of the U.S.war  in Iraq. The secretary did not agree with the assessment of Prime Minister Nouri  al-Maliki in Washington Monday suggesting Iranian interference in Iraq would  disappear once all U.S. troops have gone home.

“I think you’ve got be very cautious about Iran and  what they are doing,” Panetta said. “I suspect in one way or another they are  going to try to influence what happens there.”

He added the U.S. will keep 40,000 troops in bases  across the Gulf to counter any potential Iranian threat.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, a high-ranking Iranian  official said Iran’s military will practice sealing off the Strait of Hormuz,  the world’s most important oil transport channel. It’s a provocative move that  illustrates Iran’s capability of disrupting the world’s oil supply.

Pentagon spokesman Doug Wilson responding saying  although he has no information on those specific exercises, the U.S. is  “committed to the free and safe passage in international waters.”

Anything that affects that, Wilson said, would be  “detrimental.”

Back in Kabul, the defense secretary will also be  assessing how to heal the relationship with Pakistan  after it closed border crossings and key supply routes in response to the Nov.  26 NATO  air strike that killed 24 Pakistani troops.

Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in  Afghanistan, said that just before that incident, he went to see Pakistan’s  General Kayani for meetings he hoped would “bring the relationship back to a  high level of coordination.”

But in the aftermath of the incident on Nov. 26,  “that has chilled to some extent,” Allen said.
