BEIRUT: Hezbollah accused the United States Friday of orchestrating the suicide bombings that ripped through the Syrian capital earlier in the day killing over 40 people and wounding scores more.

“These bombings which resulted in the deaths and wounding of tens of people, mostly women and children, is the specialty of the United States, the mother of all terrorism,” Hezbollah’s press office said.

“[The U.S.] specializes in targeting the innocent, killing and terrorizing them to force them to comply to American politics to achieve the Zionist interest which Americans place above all else,” the statement added.

Hezbollah, Syria’s staunchest ally in Lebanon, maintains that a foreign conspiracy led by the United States and Israel aims to target the Syrian leadership for its alliance with Iran and its support for resistance groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

In its statement Friday, Hezbollah also said the attacks were the beginning of a series of reprisals following what the party described as America’s defeat in Iraq.

“This horrible terrorist crime, which was committed by the enemies of humanity, comes a day following coordinated blasts in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities, which suggests that those affected by the major defeat of the United States in Iraq, has begun a cowardly, bloody operation of reprisal,” the statement said.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad said over 30 people were killed and more than 100 wounded as a result of the attacks that struck just before midday Friday.

State TV said the explosions took place in the upscale Kfar Sousa district and targeted the building housing state security and a nearby intelligence building in the neighborhood.




Pakistan Formally Rejects US Report on Killings

Less than a week after insisting that the attack on a Pakistani military base was “appropriate” and “justified,” the US has released the full version of their report on the November 26 incident blaming NATO for the massive death toll.

The report insists that it took NATO “about 45 minutes from the time they got the call from Pakistan that the US warplanes were bombing their bases to get around to ordering them to stop the attack.

Pakistan was already irked about the first statements on the matter, and has submitted a letter to the US Congress criticizing the full report, saying that NATO knew about the attacks within 15 minutes yet continued for much more than just another 45 minutes.

The attack has been condemned as intentional by Pakistani military leaders, but US officials insist that it was simply lack of communication and that they had no clue they were bombing known Pakistani military bases for roughly two hours.


Muslim group–Christmas day bombings were designed to cause religious wars in Nigeria

An Islamic group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has said that the Christmas day bombings by the Boko Haram sect were calculated move to ignite religious war between Christians and Muslims in the whole country.

“They wish to create mutual suspicion, complete chaos and a total breakdown of law and order,” the group said today in a statement signed by its Director, Dr.Ishaq Akintola.   Akintola,who expressed the group’s shock over the attacks on places of worship, said the development are barbaric, Satanic and absolutely un-Islamic.

He punctured the timing and motive of the attacks, saying the attackers cannot claim that they were avenging the attack on Muslims in Jos during the last Eid il-Fitr on August 30th 2011 which left many Muslims dead because Christians celebrating Christmas earlier on December 25, 2010 were the first to be killed in bomb explosions.

“Nothing in the scriptures of Islam justifies this kind of attack. We therefore assert clearly, unequivocally and unambiguously that Boko Haram is not fighting for Nigerian Muslims,” the statement said.


U.S. to help Nigeria hunt down terrorists who bombed churches on Christmas Day

The Obama administration promised to help Nigeria find the people responsible for a wave of Christmas Day bombings that killed dozens in the oil-rich African nation.

“We have been in contact with Nigerian officials about what appear to be terrorist acts and pledge to assist them in bringing those responsible to justice,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

Boko Haram, a Muslim sect, reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks — two of which targeted churches. A year ago, the group said it was behind holiday bombings that killed more than 90.

The first explosion occurred as services were ending at St. Theresa’s Church near the capital, Abjua. Yemi Ajayi, a police spokesman, said at least 20 people were killed.

Another blast, at a church in the central city of Jos, capital of Plateau state, killed a policeman, said Pam Ayuba, a spokesman for the state government.

A suspected suicide-bomber rammed a car into the entrance of the State Security Service building in the northeastern city of Damaturu, killing four people and the bomber, Victor Ebhaleme, a spokesman for the military task force in charge of security in the region, said by phone from Maiduguri.

The Boko Haram, a group that draws inspiration from Afghanistan’s Taliban movement, claimed responsibility for the Abuja church attack, the Abuja-based Trust newspaper reported, citing a spokesman for the group, Abu Qaqa. The claim couldn’t be independently verified.

The Vatican denounced the attacks, saying the church bombings were a sign of “cruelty and absurd blind hatred that shows no respect for human life.

Authorities in Africa’s top oil producer blame the Boko Haram for a surge of violence in the mainly Muslim north and Abuja in which hundreds of people have died this year. At least 72 people have been killed in fighting since Dec. 22 between Nigerian security forces and the militant group in the northeastern city of Damaturu, officials said.

Boko Haram, which translates to “Western education is a sin,” claimed responsibility for a suicide car-bomb attack on the United Nations building in the capital on Aug. 26 that killed 24 people. It also claimed several Christmas Eve blasts last year in Jos that left 80 people dead and another blast on New Year’s Eve at an Abuja military barracks that killed at least 12 people.

Egypt’s state prosecutor on Monday charged two Zionist and a Ukrainian with smuggling weapons and trying to implicate Egyptian security, the first case of its kind against foreigners since longtime Zionist puppet  Mu-Barak was ousted in February.

A statement from the prosecutor’s office said the three would be tried in an emergency state security court, usually reserved for terrorism cases. No date for the trial has been set.

Although not directly holding the suspects responsible for any of the violence, the statement said the smuggled weapons were to be used in “illegal” operations aimed at implicating Egyptian security forces. The statement gave no further details about the alleged plot. 

The country’s rulers have often blamed “hidden hands” and foreign funding in the violence.

According to Cairo authorities, the first suspect, an IsraHelli-Arab resident of Eilat, Moaz Zahalka, arrived at the Zionist-Egypt border crossing at Taba, carrying a large wooden box which was found to contain an automatic rifle and ammunition in the box.   During his interrogation, Zahalka, a tour agent, confessed he had two accomplices: A Ukrainian living in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheik, who had asked another IsraHelli-Arab to send him the weapon. Zahalka frequently visits Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, the statement said.

The Ukrainian and one IsraHelli-Arab are in custody, while the other IsraHelli has not been apprehended, the prosecution said.




This is the first time the German government has recognized the suffering of those who fled for their lives during the Holocaust.


Germany has agreed to grant one-time compensation to Jews who fled the Nazi onslaught in the Soviet Union during World War II, even if they ended up in regions that Nazis did not conquer, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany announced on Sunday.

Payment will go to Jewish victims of Nazism from the former Soviet Union who live in Israel, the United States, Germany and other Western countries. This is the first time the German government has recognized the suffering of those who fled for their lives.

“Jews who fled ahead of the advancing Nazis in order not to be murdered were nevertheless victimized beyond imagination,” Claims Conference chairman Julius Berman was quoted as saying. “This payment can never bring back what was lost, but it is an acknowledgment of what they endured during the war.”

Hardship Fund payments of 2,556 euros will be made starting January 1 to Jews who fled between June 22, 1941, and January 27, 1944, from parts of the Soviet Union that were up to 100 kilometers from the most easterly advance of the German army, even if they were not later occupied by the Nazis.

Among those eligible will be Jews who fled Moscow and Stalingrad (today Volgograd), as well as those who fled Leningrad (today St. Petersburg) between June 22, 1941, and September of that year, when German forces began their 900-day siege of the city.

More than 1 million Jews were murdered during the Nazi occupation of the former Soviet Union and entire Jewish communities were eradicated. Thousands of Jews who realized that coming under Nazi occupation was a virtual death sentence fled eastward to try to escape.

Roman Kent, the Claims Conference treasurer and a member of the team that negotiated the agreement, expressed satisfaction that Jews who fled were being recognized by Germany as victims of the Holocaust.

Jerusalem court orders to release Meir David Eisenbach on bail after news cameras caught him spitting on a woman


The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ordered the release on bail of Beit Shemesh resident Meir David Eisenbach on Sunday. The 27-year-old haredi man was caught on camera spitting on a woman who passed by him. Judge Avital Chen banned him from the city for seven days.

The young haredi was arrested after a complaint was filed against him last Tuesday. Eisenbach was also identified after Channel 2′s Ulpan Shishi (Friday night news program) caught the incident on tape.

According to Eisenbach’s attorney, even though the act was “serious, hurtful and offensive” this kind of event does not justify extending one’s remand. “The only reason we’re here is because of the media buzz surrounding this story. The court must not be affected by such gusts of wind, as powerful as they might be,” he stated.

The defense attorney mentioned a similar case last week in which the court was quick to release a different haredi man who spat on a woman. “That decision means that spitting on a man doesn’t justify a request to extend the remand. My client claimed he generally opposes spitting on people, and certainly on women. He explained he wanted to join a protest when a camera was stuck in his face, so he spat to the side instead.”

The prosecution’s representative claimed that “Eisenbach spat in a demonstrative manner towards the woman, who wasn’t dressed according to his preference, and with his behavior he disturbed public peace and attacked her.” Despite these claims, the request to extend the remand of Eisenbach by 48 hours was not granted.

Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said during a government meeting on the exclusion of women that 21 people have been arrested recently for suspected hostility towards women. Nine have been charged.

He urged all local and state leaders to denounce such hostile acts.

Rabbis maintaining ‘disturbing silence’ amid uproar over gender segregation

Beit Shemesh is a microcosm of the wider ultra-Orthodox community, and of Israel itself; many wonder where the rabbis have gone.


The small bubble of tension that is rising about Beit Shemesh bears notice. Local elections are still far off on the horizon and Mayor Moshe Abutbul (Shas) sits confidently atop a wide, stable coalition that guarantees him the support of the Labor Party (the world of Beit Shemesh is filled with wonders), yet two opposition forces are kicking into high gear, preparing for a political showdown.

What distinguishes these two forces, which compete with each other, is the fact that both operate on the Haredi playing field: the “Tov” party, which has under its belt an ultra-Orthodox political success (it managed to send a representative to the city council after the last elections, overriding the objection of local rabbis and religious functionaries ); and the “Am Shalem” faction, led by Shas renegade and former MK Haim Amsalem, who recently established a power center in Beit Shemesh.

These two rebellious movements appeal to moderate Haredim, English-speaking Haredim, disappointed Shas members, Haredi “home-owners” (referring to ultra-Orthodox who work for their living ) and others who are alienated from traditional leaderships of Shas and other mainstream religious parties. Beit Shemesh is filled with such off-the-mainstream Haredim, particularly in the town’s new neighborhoods.

Eli Friedman, chairman of “Tov,” and Dov Lipman, a representative of Am Shalem, gave interviews on secular media outlets, and Lipman expressed himself on Facebook. Their viewpoints acutely attack Haredi extremists, and strike squarely against Mayor Abutbul. Nobody can cast doubt about their strict level of Orthodox observance, and for both, it is important to be identified as a “Haredi” activist; but under current extremist circumstances in the city, they sound as though they belong to Meretz. The future of these two movements remains unclear, yet both bear witness to important facts of the past and present in Beit Shemesh. And Beit Shemesh is in many ways a miniature representation of the Haredi world, and of the State of Israel as a whole.

Many wonder about where the rabbis have gone. Can it be that the current media uproar, in which virtually every day Haredi extremism reaches the front pages of the newspapers, hasn’t reached the rabbis’ attention? Can it be that the norms of the outside, secular political world are completely foreign to them? Are the statements and denunciations uttered by the prime minister kept away from them? Do the rabbis have nothing to say about acts of violence that occur in Beit Shemesh?

The simple answer is that the Haredi rabbis, particularly in the Ashkenazi community, do not feel committed to any agenda or public viewpoint, certainly not anything rooted in media coverage. They do not “respond” and, assuming they are aware of public consternation concerning the Haredim, do not feel obligated to expectations of any sort harbored by secular Israelis, who believe they (the rabbis) should deal with this or that phenomenon.

Not only that, but if Haredi rabbis do have an official position, it is one of complete negation of what they see as a campaign against the Haredi community, as another attempt to uproot religion. The closest thing to a response has been headlines such as one that appeared in Bnei Brak based newspaper “Yated Ne’eman” on Sunday which said, “The tendentious and deceitful incitement continues.”

Another key reason is the leadership crisis among Haredi rabbis. The Haredi community is awaiting for comments from Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the Lithuanian Haredi leader, and Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader oh Shas, neither of  who have addressed the incidents so far.

None of this, however, is directly relevant to Haredi extremists in Beit Shemesh, who do not oblige dictates given by the mainstream Haredi world. In recent years these elements seem to have spun far from the main Haredi rabbis.

“The main problem concerning Beit Shemesh is our silence, the disturbing silence maintained by religious, Haredi people. We are the first people who really ought to come out and oppose such extremism,” stated Rabbi Dr. Dov Halbertal Sunday. Halbertal suggested that if a prominent figure, such as Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, issued a denunciation of violence emanating from the Haredi fringe, it would cause convulsions in the Haredi world, including its extremist fringes.

Yet Elyashiv persists in his silence, as do the main Haredi media outlets. In their eyes, the Haredi community is the subject of a serious blitz, and those from the Haredi camp who are willing to cooperate with the media are playing into the hands of those who wish to uproot the Torah. Any criticism that does exist in newspapers such as “Mishpacha,” Hebrew for “family,” or “Be Kehila,” Hebrew for “in community,” is very subtle indeed. 

Even so, the winds of change are blowing. The call for change, for stopping the Haredi gangs, for putting an end to extremism, are coming from the Haredi street. Until last week, these voices were mainly heard in internet forums, where members can comment anonymously, but on Sunday they were clearly visible in the headlines of Haredi websites, such as “Kikar Shabat,” Hebrew for “shabbat square,” that called on extremists by name, and called to denounce them. One example is journalist Asher Gold, who called on members of the public to join a religious-nationalist protest in Beit Shemesh on Tuesday.

Many are not prepared to put up with the tyranny of Haredi gangs in Beit Shemesh, or incidents such as the recent one where little girls are spat at, and not just because they understand how much damage the extremist minority is doing to the ultra-Orthodox majority.

Gaza Diary day 24: visiting the Samounis


We oscillate here between outrage and willed calm, “maneu­ver­ing between numbness and hyper­sen­si­tiv­ity,” as a friend put it. You cannot let the anger carry you off like a riptide. For learning how to do that, we have very good examples, almost everyone around us: every mourner’s tent we visit, every young man stonily reciting the details of the last minutes of his brother’s life, and especially the Samouni children, who, instead of roiling with justified rage, sing the words of Lutfi Yassini put to music, offer us tea and coffee, and eagerly soak up Adie’s English classes.

But that will to calmness becomes self-alien­at­ing when you try to absorb the sentiment behind the graffiti scrawled on the wall of the home of the Samouni family saying, “1 down, 999,999 to go,” or the tombstone drawn on the wall with the inscrip­tion: “Arabs, 1948–2009,” without cursing or letting any emotion seep out, at least in front of the families (There was more: one note saying “die you all,” and several bits in Hebrew. I also tried not to mouth the Hebrew letters and the words that the Israeli soldiers wrote; for some reason at that moment ‘proving’ to them that there are Jews who don’t hate them seemed tawdry). Israel has not yet committed genocide, but you see its seeds ger­mi­nat­ing in the minds of the Givati brigadiers who wrote those words on the walls of the Samouni home two years ago.

Faced with the inscrutability of evil, you erect a wall to protect yourself from what you see. What happens is that you wall yourself in. What I also saw is that the soldiers must have had a message for people other than the Arab-speaking Pales­tini­ans who would move back into that home after the war too—a message for the English-speaking jour­nal­ists and inves­ti­ga­tors who would record those words after the Israeli army retreated back behind the perimeter of the ghetto. Their message was understandable for a society that largely views Gaza as an “abscess, trou­ble­some pus,” as Matan Vilnai called it a few years ago.

The way to treat an abscess it to lance it, and that was the thinking behind the Cast Lead operation. Maybe part of the reason we benumb ourselves is because we cannot quite wrap our empathy around the emotive and human void that those sketch­ings symbolize, or at their human residue sitting on chairs across from us: Ahmed Samouni’s first-born baby sharing his birth-date with the death of Ahmed’s parents, the shrapnel slowly working its way out through his skin, the scars on his little siblings’ faces, his brother’s mangled breathing passages, all huffily dismissed as “operational errors” or “collateral damage”–if acknowledged at all–by addled propagandists in Tel-Aviv.

I don’t know why the Samouni family left those messages up on the raw concrete walls of their home. I’m not even sure they live in that section of the house anymore. An American psy­chol­o­gist was telling me two days ago that one of the purposes of murals and art-therapy is to share trauma: to create witnesses where they had been none before, so that the raw pain of murder and destruc­tion is softened or slightly dis­si­pated through broader exposure.

Maybe they keep the writing up so they don’t have to keep it as private knowledge that there were young men in their home ruining it, and who hate them in such an unalloyed ter­ri­fy­ing way, young men running around freely somewhere in the suburbs of Jerusalem, or carrying out training exercises in the Negev for the next round of hell, now feeling incipient as the muffled roar of F-16s is audible more and more frequently over Gaza City. They keep it up also so that they can tell people about it. The psy­chol­o­gist I was with wanted to hear the stories of the Samounis for her video doc­u­men­tary project. We spoke to Ahmed for about 40 minutes.

So another thing I learned was that many of the older men in the Samouni family spoke excellent Hebrew—Ahmed’s father had worked for 30 years in Israel. They had tried to use the Hebrew that in the past they had used to speak with their employers, co-workers, taxi-drivers, the Israelis whose economy they shared when Gaza was a bedroom community for Israeli construction companies, before Israel switched from Bantustan labor to Southeast Asian slave labor. During the incursion one of the Samouni men had gone outside, shown his hawiya, the Pales­tin­ian identity card, proved to the Israeli army that they were not ter­ror­ists, spoke in Hebrew to them, explained the number of women and children in the homes with them. The Israeli army confirmed that everyone there was a civilian. Then they killed 29 of them.

The person I was with asked Ahmed if he had a message for the outside world (she was aware that he had probably been asked that question before). Ahmed asked us, “Why do they do this to us? We are civilians, we had women and children with us—why do they destroy every­thing?” We glibly answer “Zionism,” but that’s an analytical, an intellectual, a polemical response. It doesn’t mean anything. Zionism names the ideological banner under which human beings did this to the Samouni families but it does not explain the corruption of the human beings who actually did it.

So another frequent reaction to the Israeli actions here is  befuddlement—maybe because they don’t see how the people abusing them have abjured their humanity, trading it for the tribal morality of the pogrom, another verbose intellectualism to explain the unexplainable. And so they merely describe it, with far more truth than intellectualisms: “they want to destroy every­thing about us,” as the owner of the Rafah zoo described its destruc­tion during the 2nd Intifada. I don’t see him as less baffled than Ahmed Samouni, just, sharp enough to describe the clear outlines of what was being done to him. And what continues to be done to them–as a group of lunatic rabbis just claimed, “the Torah compels the Jews to erase all trace of this age’s giants, referring to the Palestinians.”

They shall not be cleansed.
