RBS ‘horror story’ as UK job cuts top 20,000

NOVANEWS

The job cuts at Royal Bank of Scotland are turning into a “horror story”, according to union Unite, as the total number of staff made redundant in the UK by the bank since its partial nationalisation topped 20,000.

By Harry Wilson,

Financial Services Correspondent

In an announcement to staff in its business centres across Britain, RBS yesterday said it was cutting another 3,500 jobs, taking the total number of UK-based staff made redundant to 20,600.

Royal Bank Of Scotland Group

Workers unions Unite described the cuts as a “horror story” for the UK and said it was “appalled” by the bank’s actions, which come only a month after it reported a profit for the first half of the year of £1.1bn.

“Just three weeks ago staff were boosted to hear of the £1.1bn half-year profit yet today thousands of them are told that they have no future at the bank,” said Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer.

“It will be a bitter pill for staff to swallow as RBS has decided to move some of the jobs abroad to the Far East, India and America.”

So far 9,000 positions at RBS business centres have disappeared, with back office staff in call centres and IT departments making up the larger part of the redundancies as the bank looks for an annual saving of £2.5bn.

Among the new cuts, around 1,500 are related to RBS’s sale of 318 bank branches to Spain’s Santander. The cuts take the total number of jobs lost worldwide since the bank began a cost-cutting programme following its partial nationalisation to 26,600.In a statement RBS said: “Having to cut jobs is the most difficult part of our work to rebuild RBS and repay taxpayers for their support. We continue to make efficiencies across our business and adjust our plans in line with the divestments we have been required to make by the EU.”The bank said it would do all it can to support its staff, offering other jobs wherever possible and keeping compulsory redundancies to a minimum.Further cuts are considered a possibility and the bank is to continue reviewing its business services operations with a view to making more redundancies.
At present RBS operates its business support operations from 12 sites around the country, varying in size from less than a hundred staff to about 300.As part of the cost-cutting programme two of these operations will be shut, with further closures potentially on the cards.Redundancies made by RBS are politically sensitive given the state’s 84pc holding in the bank, which had to be almost completely nationalised following the large losses it made as the financial crisis gripped world markets in late 2008.RBS also receives hundreds of billions of pounds of taxpayer support through the asset protection scheme.

Francis Clark-Lowes’ Appeal Speech to PSC

NOVANEWS

by Gilad Atzmon

FrancisClark

Introduction by Gilad Atzmon: Francis Clark-Lowes, an academic, former Chair of the National PSC and former chairman of the Brighton branch for Palestinian Solidarity, appealed today to the PSC AGM against his recent expulsion from the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign.

Clark-Lowes has been maintaining, for a while. that the opposition to the Jewish State and Zionism, should attempt to grasp the true nature of the Jewish State and Jewish ideology. Being a leading UK Palestinian solidarity activist, Clark-Lowes has challenged the notion of the ‘primacy of Jewish suffering’. This was apparently enough for the PSC’s Executive Committee to expel him last year on the ground of ‘anti Semitism’.

Earlier today, Clark-Lowes’ appeal to the PCS AGM was rejected.

I tend to believe that the PSC’s Executive Committee has lost its way.  In the last year it repeatedly bowed to Zionist pressure groups. Together with some Jewish anti Zionist bodies, it expelled and marginalised some of UK’s leading activists and thinkers. At a certain stage, it was even applauded by the notorious Zionist Jewish Chronicle.

Instead of being an umbrella organisation that encourages open debate and pluralism on issues to do with Palestine and the conflict, the PSC’s central body has become a narrow-minded political indoctrinating instrument, engaged primarily with the fight against anti Semitism. This is very tragic indeed, but at least it is all in the open.

The PSC’s Executive Committee should be reminded that political battles come to an end, but ideas, spirit and truth remain.

Read Francis Clark-Lowes beautiful words and judge for yourself.

Appeal Speech to PSC AGM Delegates, 21st January 2012

by Francis Clark-Lowes

So, here I stand before you, ex-Chair of PSC, founder and ex-Chair of Brighton & Hove PSC, accused of being a racist, an anti-Semite, a Nazi sympathiser, a capitulator to Zionism, a pre-judger of Jews, an ‘upper-class fascist twit,’ a ‘Holocaust’ denier.

I’ve stopped defending myself against such descriptions, and have even, paradoxically, embraced them at times. How else do you challenge the simplistic mindset from which they arise?

From my background in German-Jewish Studies, I have come to believe that a major contributor to that mindset is a story of innate Gentile hatred of Jews, and consequent perennial Jewish suffering.

Zionism was consciously constructed on the foundation of this same unlikely story, and therefore required its maintenance and protection.

The carefully nurtured and moulded ‘Holocaust’ narrative has done a good deal of that job since the Second World War. But more fundamental is the prohibition on all discussion of Jews which does not accord with their own collective view of themselves – that is of a uniquely talented and uniquely suffering people. Hence the extraordinary move to ban any questioning of the ‘Holocaust’ narrative at this AGM.

Of course there are Jews who challenge elements of Jewish ideology. But these exceptions don’t invalidate, in principle, generalisations about Jews. That would be like saying you mustn’t describe dogs as quadrupeds because some of that species have lost a leg.

Put simply, the idea that Gentiles have an anti-Semitic gene, the story of Jewish suffering, the ‘Holocaust’ myth, Zionism, Jewish chauvinism, and anti-racist rhetoric have combined into an ideology which, because it is virtually unsinkable in its own terms, is immensely powerful. Breach one compartment of the vessel, and bulkheads protect the others to ensure the ship stays afloat.

Consequently, whatever we may say, no ambitious Western leader will be foolish enough to propose effective action against Israel, let alone to criticise the concept of Zionism. To do so is to risk being accused of anti-Semitism and enabling (quotes) ‘another Holocaust’. That’s a career stopper!

I am taken to task for capitulating to the Zionist narrative. Instead I should join forces with anti-racists to eliminate prejudice and thereby prove the Zionist story false. But what Zionist, let alone any intelligent person, is going to accept that generalisation, a crucial function of the brain, can be extinguished?

With all the difficulties there may be in defining groups and their cultures, and in estimating their power, without doing so we cannot make sense of the world. For a group to exist it must make itself recognisable, to its members and to others, and if a group can be recognised, then it can also be judged – positively, neutrally or negatively.

PSC’s acquiescence in the tendency to regard dislike of groups a cardinal sin is weakening ‘our,’ or should I already be saying ‘your’, organisation. Campaigning organisations turn to in-fighting when the force they seek to overcome appears insuperable. ‘If you can’t beat them, blame your comrades,’ seems to be the thought.

But the key to resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict lies in our hands. Instead of  cowering in fear at the use Zionists might make of what we say, and desperately scouring every word uttered on this subject to root out supposed anti-Semitism, we should be challenging Jewish ideology.Anything less does the Israelis’ work for them and exposes the Palestinians to yet more grinding oppression.

I understand your reluctance to agree with me, but I am still prepared to work within PSC. All I ask is that you respect my right to free thought and speech. Readmit me, and you will have taken a step towards creating a more effective broad-based organisation.

A Very Good Day for Palestinians?

by Roy Bard

GreenSteinthoughtpolice

Tony Greenstein thought policeman for the PSC ~ Palestine Solidarity Campaign

Is it really “a very good day” for Palestinians”? – Tony’s Pyrrhic Victory

After Saturday’s Palestine Solidarity Campaign AGM, Tony Greenstein is one happy man! His blog now proudly proclaims a Crushing Defeat For Gilad Atzmon and the Anti-Semites . And the source of his joy? The expulsion of former friend and colleague Francis Clark-Lowe from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Furthermore, the J-Big motion he seconded was linked to a similar motion from the EC and “passed with barely 10 votes (if that), against”.

“All in all a very good day for PSC and the Palestinians and an abject defeat for the apologists for Atzmon and Eisen.” According to Tony:

Now, as it happens I care little for the authoritarian and moribund PSC but a lot for the Palestinians and, as I scoured Tony’s post in an attempt to discover exactly what was it that had resulted in this “very good day” for the people of occupied Palestine, I found that somehow, most of Tony’s references to Palestine and the Palestinians were in the form of potshots at political opponents, or big-ups for him and his allies. I found absolutely nothing to cause one single Palestinian to think they’d had a ‘very good day’, or that an end to the seemingly never-ending grind of occupation and oppression was anywhere in sight.

After the AGM had voted to approve his expulsion from the organisation that he chaired just over a decade ago, I met with Francis Clark-Lowes. Together with Paul Eisen we went to a café, where I recorded our conversation. I’ve met both of them before but this time our conversation focused on the events that lead to his expulsion. I was trying to understand how we had reached a situation where the most visible pro-Palestinian solidarity campaign in the UK was divesting so much time and energy in the unearthing and expelling of activists who, despite their incessant demonisation by Greenstein and the like, still remain to my eyes warm and kind people with a palpable concern for the plight of the Palestinians.

It is pretty impossible to dislike either of them, and although instinctively (years of indoctrination, perhaps) I find it difficult to discuss the ‘thought crimes’ that have resulted in their excommunication from the PSC, I still cannot find in myself the required shock or outrage at the conclusions they have reached.  I’d certainly rather drink coffee with them than with the acerbic Mr. Greenstein any day of the week. And I’m glad to say that not all PSC members were quite so overjoyed by this thoroughly dirty business of expelling passionate pro-Palestinian activists from the campaign. My observation throughout the day was that these two people were warmly received and respectfully treated by the vast majority of attendees.

Perhaps some of those who voted may now be feeling some discomfort at their role in Francis’expulsion, and maybe some even some disquiet at the role that sites like Harry’s Place have played in creating these politics of rejection, so antithetical to the values of any solidarity campaign. Perhaps others realise that this won’t stop here. Harry’s Place is already baying for more blood. So much for the HP strap-line

“Liberty if it means anything, is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear”.

And I wonder also when Mr. Greenstein is going to realise how unattractive and objectionable is his own behaviour. That for all his current delight, Palestinians are not one jot closer to being able to live their lives without the yoke of oppression weighing down on them. And that, as long as both he and Israel behave as they do – with their constant attacks, the smearing and baying for blood – for the Palestinians, things can only get worse.

Arriving home, I find an Ali Abunimah tweet pointing me to a new Barack Obama video aiming to improve his re-election chances by proudly displaying the Israeli flag alongside the American one as a prelude to endorsements of him by Israeli war criminals. I find myself wondering if there will ever be a PSC AGM which causes a smile to light up the face of a man in Rafah, or a woman in Nablus. Or will they in 30 years time, still be droning on about US Imperialism and the need to stop any examination of the very power structures and narratives that keep the occupiers in business.

BOYCOTT ZIONIST PALESTINE SOLI-DIRTY CAMPAIGN PSC

The national PSC on Holocaust denial and Gill Kaffash

Joseph W

PSC campaigns officer Zionist Ben Soffa has written this past weekend that,

PSC AGM overwhelmingly endorsed statement that Holocaust denial / minimisation have no place in PSC

This was in response to the motion passed at the AGM endorsing the executive’s statement about Holocaust denial, that Holocaust denial has no place in the Palestine Soldiarity movement. The statement read:

” The Palestine Solidarity Campaign exists to build a mass solidarity movement on Palestine. It is founded on principles of justice, human rights, and opposition to all forms of racism. Any expression of racism or intolerance, or attempts to deny or minimise the Holocaust have no place in our movement. Such sentiments are abhorrent in their own right and can only detract from the building of a strong movement in support of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.”

* THIS IS ZIONIST COLLABORATORS ‘PSC’ STATEMENT

Despite the PSC agreeing to this motion, Anthony Cooper observes that:

“the AGM was asked to vote on whether this Holocaust denier should be expelled from the self-proclaimed anti-racist campaign. 1 in 5 of those present couldn’t bring themselves to vote yes. […] Words are cheap and in this case meaningless. When 20% of your organisation won’t vote to expel a man who denied the Holocaust to their faces, you don’t have much credibility claiming that such denial “has no place” in your movement.”

* THIS STATEMENT BY ZIO-NAZI MOUTHPIECE COOPER.

Here the PSC expressed clear opposition to the appeal of former PSC National Chair Francis Clark-Lowes, against his expulsion from the organisation, by a 5:1 majority.

Zionist Ben Soffa will claim that, by upholding PSC opposition to Clark-Lowes, the PSC has proven its anti-racist credentials. In reality, the outfit continues to send out the message, that it will only follow others on anti-racism, rather than taking an active lead.

This is how PSC founder Tony Greenstein relates Clark-Lowes’ expulsion:

The first item on the agenda was a closed session at which the appeal of Frances Clarke Lowes against his expulsion was to be heard. Last April, Francis declared on the Brighton & Hove PSC Discussion List that he was proud to be a holocaust denier. For his pains he was expelled from Brighton PSC and not one voice was raised in his defence in Brighton PSC. I reported his statement to the Executive and sometime in May he was also expelled from national PSC. Francis however had the right of appeal to the national conference and chose to exercise that right.

* THIS STATEMENT BY MOSSAD AGENT GREENSTEIN

So Clarke-Lowes was expelled from national PSC, only following his expulsion from Brighton PSC. This was because Brighton PSC was sufficiently motivated to consider Holocaust denial to be serious grounds for expulsion.

Now compare the case of Clarke-Lowes to that of Gill Kaffash. Regarding the Holocaust, Kaffash told Iranian news agency IRNA in December 2005:

There is no doubt that a great number of Jews along with other victims of the Nazi army were killed by Hitler. However, historical phenomena need to be further examined to uncover the truth. Therefore banning opposition to the theses termed as `invariable reality` is irrational.

Kaffash is secretary of Camden PSC. She was asked to resign as Camden PSC chair. However, Kaffash remains a member of the national PSC.

As a member she was able to submit a motion to be voted upon at the PSC AGM, in which she wanted a definition of racism, in which racism only counts as such, if it leads to violence, prejudice or discrimination.

Why has Kaffash not been expelled from the PSC, as Clarke-Lowes has been? She may have been reported to the national PSC, she may not have. Either way, nothing has happened.

It has been 6 years since her comments questioning the Holocaust, and 4 years since she was listed as a supporter of the Holocaust denier, Paul Eisen.

So far no action has been forthcoming from the national PSC.

Holocaust denier’s appeal fails to impress the PSC

It seems appropriate to flag the PSC’s clear opposition to Francis Clark-Lowes’ appeal against his expulsion from the organisation, by a 5 – 1 majority, just as I would (of course) have felt the opposite result should be publicised and commented on.   His speech was truly shocking – it can be found on Atzmon’s blog.  Here’s an extract:

Here’s another piece by him which insists on the collective responsibility of Jews for the (perceived) crimes of Israel, and warns that ‘Jews, as a collective, exercise immense, and quite disproportionate, power in the world, and that this power is being abused.’

Pace Lauren Booth, I doubt this result will herald the start of a cosy friendship between Harry’s Place and the PSC. Refusing to tolerate an egregious Holocaust denier isn’t exactly a huge achievement –  andAnthony Cooper is less than impressed by the weak audience reactions to Clark-Lowes’ appalling speech  – but it’s a whole lot better than allowing his continuing presence in the PSC. There is further coverage on Tony Greenstein’s blog.

“Just keep Looking the Other Way”

NOVANEWS

Zionism the elephant-in-the-room

Zionism the elephant in the room

Yesterday, I asked the question: Will PSC rise to the Challenge?

The answer came as expected, loud and clear

Yes, I reaffirm:

SOME don’t want you to look at the elephant in the room, just keep looking the other way; it is much safer, less controversial and much more “effective”

SOME never bothered before and were vehemently opposed to joining PSC as a “matter of principle”, suddenly they all became interested!

They gather their hoards, from up and down the country and flooded the conference to “occupy” PSC by casting their most valuable “omniscient” vote

SOME “know better” you see, they always know what is best for Palestinians, and for every one else. They know how to define words, how to create political systems, and what kind of governments should others in far away countries elect, and of course this has nothing to do with “authoritarianism”, “Stalinism” nor with “cultural supremacy”

Furthermore, while SOME frantically insist to keep PSC “occupied” with endless futile discussions on “anti-Semitism”, “Holocaust denying” and “American Imperialism”, OTHERS, continue to create FACTS on the GROUND, for the advancement of their racist supremacist agenda…… Just have a look at the following:

Chief Rabbi to Address Chabad Shluchim Conference in New York

Now, WHY should we all be troubled about all this ?

Simply because of the detrimental effect…

…. of such supremacist racist ideology

… on our lives as Palestinians

… and soon on the world

………. if people don’t wake up and smell the coffee

SOME want you to feel smug with the “victory” you “achieved”, they want you to be filled with a sense of “self-righteousness” , after approving vacuous motions against alleged racism, while they distract you away from opposing or even noticing REAL RACISM creeping in, to your own neighbourhood.

They omit to even mention in their motions their opposition to the most vile form of racism, namely: Jewish Racism and the kind of supremacy as exhibited by settler in Palestine and by Chabad and their avid supporters as they heavily infiltrate the political world of UK, US and others, in Education, Law systems, Policy making, Homeland security, and Internet Control

Also, “thanks to him” USA PATRIOT Act was signed into law

furthermore this devout orthodox and avid Islamophobe “told a Jewish radio show that “Hasham an orthodox Jewish name for ‘God’ gave him his name ‘Schumer‘ which means guardian, so that he can fulfill the very important role in the U.S. Senate as the guardian of Israel.”

From the outside looking in…The PSC AGM

NOVANEWS

by Paul Eisen

The EC

Yes, PSC has hitched itself firmly to the Jewish supremacists – the ‘anti-Zionist’ variety this time but it won’t be long before dear old PSC is an open and full-blown hasbara mouthpiece.

I was never a very good PSC member. Never much of an activist, all that leafleting and politburo-style meetings, never did much for me. And since DYR and I were the very first casualties in the ongoing and current PSC witch-hunt, to stand outside the PSC AGM was something I viewed with eager anticipation but also trepidation.

My reasons for attending were four-fold:

To support Francis Clark-Lowes in his appeal against expulsion and Gill Kaffash in her motion to bring some sanity to this increasingly nonsensical ‘racist/anti-racist’ debate.

  1. To hand out leaflets and badges about Deir Yassin and its remembrance

  2. To witness for myself the progress of PSC’s descent into complete subservience  to Jewish power.

  3. To show my face after a five year absence.

I needn’t have worried. PSC members are every bit as lovely as I recall and those members of the Executive Council I saw and who saw me were also polite, if a little downcast. Sarah Colbourne pretended she didn’t see me but Betty Hunter did manage a strangled gurgle when asked cheerily why she wasn’t wearing her “Remember Deir Yassin‘ badge. And the that little Jews-only trio – Abe and Ros Hayeem and Deborah Maccoby – though visibly paling at the sight of me, had the good grace to shuffle hastily past. Even friend and brother Tony Greenstein managed to refrain from his usual foul and abusive behaviour as, shifty and alone he entered the building.  But the PSC rank-and-file were as the PSC rank-and-file always are – open, friendly and one hundred-and ten per-cent committed to the Palestinian people. .

I began to leaflet. For years, I was a market trader – not the money markets or commodity markets – but the real, get-your-gums-round-my-plums, markets – so I know a thing or two about shifting gear- and believe me, the principles of shifting gear on a market are much the same as pushing fliers at a PSC AGM  – Pile ‘em high and make ’em cheap (in this case, free), never crowd the punter and, above all, keep going. Everyone loves a free badge so I gave out a lot. And there’s no doubt that Deir Yassin carries a lot of resonance for a lot of people– all the more so for the five year absence.

I didn’t see Francis make his speech but I read it beforehand. Honest, thoughtful and beautifully crafted, I can only assume it was as inspiring to hear as it was to read and I know it was received with modest but determined and warm applause. He lost of course but what did we expect?

And Gill’s motion? Well, Gill’s motion wasn’t called. It seems the AGM just ran out of time. And before all you conspiracy theorists  get busy, Gill’s motion was not the only one not called.  Course it wasn’t. If I was engaged in shady practices to ensure unpalatable ideas didn’t reach my membership, I too would make sure that Gill’s motion wasn’t the only one not called.

Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi at the AGM

And finally, what of those critical ‘anti-racism’ motions? The ones that deal with all those pesky anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers. Well, the EC decided to ensure the future of its Star Chamber by hitching its motion with its childlike ‘building’  this and ‘the masses’ that firmly to Jews-only motion number 9. This one proposed by Tony Greenstein and Naomi Idrissi-Wimbourne was my favourite.

Tony Greenstein in a moment of reflection

Firmly Marxist in its rhetoric, this motion above all,  set out to protect and to excuse Jews from their crimes in Palestine.

Like the EC motion it called for the witch-hunt against ‘anti-Semitism’ and ‘Holocaust denial’ to be intensified. But it also called for ‘a series of forums’ to ‘build understanding’ of ‘Israel as a settler-colonial, apartheid state (So where is the Mother Country – World Jewry perhaps?) and ‘Educational materials’ to ‘develop understanding’ of ‘Israel’s status as a client state of US imperialism’ (So, it’s all the Goyishe Americans’ fault)  and ‘the non-Jewish origins and Jewish opposition to Zionism’ (You see, it’s nothing to do with us).  Yaakov Sverdlov and Pol Pot would both have loved it.

They passed of course just like we knew they would.

Yes, PSC has hitched itself firmly to the Jewish supremacists – the ‘anti-Zionist’ variety this time but it won’t be long before dear old PSC is an open and full-blown hasbara mouthpiece.

But one thing I know. People aren’t so stupid and PSC activists certainly aren’t. So one question remains: Now the PSC has joined in oppressing precisely those people it was supposed to liberate, where will all those ‘open, friendly, one hundred-and-ten-per-cent committed and thoroughly decent’ PSC activists go?

A Victory for Bullies Everywhere – The Zionification of the PSC

NOVANEWS

by Laura Stuart

antisemitefindergeneral

Palestine Solidarity Campaign believers have just hit Twitter with a flurry of upbeat, positively Hasbaraesque tweets – presumably to convince us all that today’s AGM was a resounding success.

PSC updates PSC Great AGM today. Excellent programme of work continuing our campaign to FREE PALESTINE! Make sure you get involved in the PSC campaign

Exactly how P.S.C. intends to FREE PALESTINE is not clear.I wasn’t at the AGM but this much I know: before the PSC can FREE PALESTINE  from Zionist occupation it had better first free itself!

Noticeably absent from the tweets was any mention that PSC is still reeling from a barrage of Jewish bullying tactics – not only from the usual outside  Zionist sources but also from so-called ‘anti- Zionist’  fifth column within.

I am reliably informed that a member of the PSC Executive has confirmed that it was the attacks from the pro-war, Islamophobic, rabidly Zionist website Harry’s Place and the Jewish Chronicle which had bounced the PSC into placing a statement on its website declaring that PSC will not tolerate from members any form of holocaust denial or holocaust minimising (will someone please tell me what this means exactly!) .  This was obviously rushed and ill-considered but once out on the website the damage was done and any subsequent retraction would have simply added grist to the mill of Zionist vitriol. In any case, like all acts of appeasement,  it didn’t satisfy the Zionists one bit who simply twisted the words and then made even further demands such as PSC had now better stop supporting the genuinely-Semitic Sheik Raed Salah, labelled by Zionists as an anti- Semite. Such is the futility of appeasing these Zio-thugs.

Compounding the Zionist attack from outside, some so-called ‘anti- Zionists’ from within, seized the opportunity to hi-jack the situation and sideline the Palestine Solidarity Movement into discussing issues of holocaust denial and holocaust minimizing, instead of what they should be discussing – the liberation of Palestine. This opportunistic campaign was led by people with a personal vendetta against a certain International Jazz Musician, who incidentally, has many times stated publicly that he is NOT a holocaust denier.

Myself and others who are unwilling to submit to bullying by either Zionist or ‘anti- Zionists, we will continue the fight for a Zionist-free Palestine and indeed a Zionist-free world. We will do this with a new website where we can fly the banner for Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression.
