Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili says terrorists have never been able to bring democracy to nations.

In a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in Baghdad on Thursday, Jalili said even the Western states have admitted the presence of foreign militants in Syria.

“Terrorists have never brought democracy to nations,” the senior Iranian official pointed out.

He was referring to the insurgents fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad under the pretext of establishing democracy in the Arab country.

Jalili later reiterated Tehran’s principled policy on the nations’ right to deciding their own destiny.

“The present dilemma in Syria is that outsiders have disguised their illegitimate demands as public demands, and are trying to abuse the ongoing crisis in a bid to implement their colonial and interventionist policies,” Jalili stated.

Syria has been flooded with terrorists since the insurgency began in the country 18 months ago. Many people, including large number of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames outlaws, saboteurs and the insurgents for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Jalili further turned to the foreign interference in Iraq in a bid to create insecurity there, stressing that wise measures taken by the Iraqi government to restore stability have thwarted the enemies’ plots to undermine the Iraqi nation’s peace and progress.

Zebari, for his part, lauded Iran’s active approach vis-à-vis Iraq and regional developments, stating that the recent abduction of a group of Iranian pilgrims in Syria is not justifiable and must be condemned.

Forty-eight Iranian pilgrims, who were traveling on a bus from Damascus International Airport to the shrine of Hazrat Zainab (AS) on the outskirts of Damascus, were abducted by insurgents on August 4.
