Armada of international naval power massing in the Gulf as Israel prepares an Iran strike

NOVANEWS

Armada of British naval power massing in the Gulf as Israel prepares an Iran strike

telegraph.co.uk

Cruisers, aircraft carriers and minesweepers from 25 nations are converging on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in an unprecedented show of force as Israel and Iran move towards the brink of war.

Western leaders are convinced that Iran will retaliate to any attack by attempting to mine or blockade the shipping lane through which passes around 18 million barrels of oil every day, approximately 35 per cent of the world’s oil traded by sea.

A blockade would have a catastrophic effect on the fragile economies of Britain, Europe the United States and Japan, all of which rely heavily on oil and gas supplies from the Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most congested international waterways. It is only 21 miles wide at its narrowest point and is bordered by the Iranian coast to the north and the Oman to the south.

In preparation for any pre-emptive or retaliatory action by Iran, warships from more than 25 countries, including the United States, Britain, France, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, will today begin an annual 12-day exercise.

The war games are the largest ever undertaken in the region.

They will practise tactics in how to breach an Iranian blockade of the strait and the force will also undertake counter-mining drills.

The multi-national naval force in the Gulf includes three US Nimitz class carrier groups, each of which has more aircraft than the entire complement of the Iranian air force.

The carriers are supported by at least 12 battleships, including ballistic missile cruisers, frigates, destroyers and assault ships carrying thousand of US Marines and special forces.

The British component consists of four British minesweepers and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Cardigan Bay, a logistics vessel. HMS Diamond, a brand-new £1billion Type 45 destroyer, one of the most powerful ships in the British fleet, will also be operating in the region.

In addition, commanders will also simulate destroying Iranian combat jets, ships and coastal missile batteries.

In the event of war, the main threat to the multi-national force will come from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps navy, which is expected to adopt an “access-denial” strategy in the wake of an attack, by directly targeting US warships, attacking merchant shipping and mining vital maritime chokepoints in the Persian Gulf.

Defence sources say that although Iran’s capability may not be technologically sophisticated, it could deliver a series of lethal blows against British and US ships using mini-subs, fast attack boats, mines and shore-based anti-ship missile batteries.

Next month, Iran will stage massive military manoeuvres of its own, to show that it is prepared to defend its nuclear installations against the threat of aerial bombardment.

The exercise is being showcased as the biggest air defence war game in the Islamic Republic’s history, and will be its most visible response yet to the prospect of an Israeli military strike.

Using surface-to-air missiles, unmanned drones and state-of-the-art radar, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and air force will combine to test the defences of 3,600 sensitive locations throughout the country, including oil refineries and uranium enrichment facilities.

Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili, commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya air defence base, told a conference this month that the manoeuvres would “identify vulnerabilities, try out new tactics and practise old ones”.

At the same time as the Western manoeuvres in the Gulf, the British Response Task Forces Group — which includes the carrier HMS Illustrious, equipped with Apache attack helicopters, along with the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle – will be conducting a naval exercise in the eastern Mediterranean. The task force could easily be diverted to the Gulf region via the Suez Canal within a week of being ordered to do so.

The main naval exercise comes as President Barack Obama is scheduled to meet Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, today to discuss the Iranian crisis.

Many within the Obama administration believe that Israel will launch a pre-emptive strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities before the US presidential elections, an act which would signal the failure of one of Washington’s key foreign policy objectives.

Both Downing Street and Washington hope that the show of force will demonstrate to Iran that Nato and the West will not allow President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian leader, to develop a nuclear armoury or close Hormuz.

Sir John Sawers, the head of MI6, the Secret Intelligence Service, reportedly met the Israeli prime minister and Ehud Barak, his defence secretary, two weeks ago in an attempt to avert military action against Iran.

But just last week Mr Netanyahu signalled that time for a negotiated settlement was running out when he said: “The world tells Israel ‘Wait, there’s still time.’ And I say, ‘Wait for what? Wait until when?’

“Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don’t have a moral right to place a red light before Israel.”

The crisis hinges on Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme, which Israel believes is designed to build an atomic weapon. Tehran has long argued that the programme is for civil use only and says it has no plans to an build a nuclear bomb, but that claim has been disputed by the West, with even the head of MI6 stating that the Islamic Republic is on course to develop atomic weapons by 2014.

The Strait of Hormuz has long been disputed territory, with the Iranians claiming control of the region and the entire Persian Gulf.

Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps recently boasted that “any plots of enemies” would be foiled and a heavy price exacted, adding: “We determine the rules of military conflict in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.”

But Leon Panetta, the US defence secretary, warned that Iranian attempts to exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz could be met with force.

He said: “The Iranians need to understand that the United States and the international community are going to hold them directly responsible for any disruption of shipping in that region — by Iran or, for that matter, by its surrogates.”

Mr Panetta said that the United States was “fully prepared for all contingencies” and added: “We’ve invested in capabilities to ensure that the Iranian attempt to close down shipping in the Gulf is something that we are going to be able to defeat if they make that decision.”

That announcement was supported by Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, who added: “We are determined to work as part of the international community effort to ensure freedom of passage in the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz.”

One defence source told The Sunday Telegraph last night: “If it came to war, there would be carnage. The Iranian casualties would be huge but they would be able to inflict severe blows against the US and British.

“The Iranian Republican Guard are well versed in asymmetrical warfare and would use swarm attacks to sink or seriously damage ships. This is a conflict nobody wants, but the rhetoric from Israel is unrelenting.”

America’s War. Next Stop Iran: Who Will Save Us?

NOVANEWS
Global Research

One of the most awe inspiring photographs ever taken was by a machine, not a person. The ‘Pale Blue Dot’ is the name of the photograph. It is an image of the Earth taken in 1990 by the Voyager spacecraft, some six billion kilometers away from our planet as the craft was about to leave the Solar System. The Earth appears as a miniscule dot, almost lost in the vastness of space.

The ‘Blue Marble’ is another image from space that also shows the Earth. It was taken by the US Apollo 17 spacecraft in 1972. The entire planet is a vivid, enchanting swirl of deep blue oceans, scattered white clouds and solid green land masses set in stark contrast against the apparent emptiness of space.

To see the magnificent fragility of Earth hanging in a mind boggling expanse of blackness is as wondrous as it is humbling. The late astrophysicist Carl Sagan commented on the ‘Pale Blue Dot’ by saying that from out there in space, there is no inkling, no clue whatsoever, that there is life here. There is no hint of humankind’s squabbles, posturings, religions, civilizations or doctrines. There is no possible comprehension of the intensity or magnitude of human joys and wonder, prejudices and sufferings.

Beneath Earth’s colourful blue mask from space, lies a sorry tale. It’s a tale about the hundreds of millions of deaths due to pointless wars and conflicts that have taken place down the ages. We have had little compulsion in destroying living creatures in their droves and gorging on and depleting finite natural resources. And we destroyed in a blink of an eyelid what took the Earth millions of years to nurture.

Sagan once asked us to consider how much blood has been spilled by generals and emperors just to become temporary masters of one part of this small blue dot and how much cruelty has been visited time and time again by one set of the planet’s inhabitants on a barely indistinguishable other set of inhabitants. Sagan is not alone. During our more self reflective moments, each of us may care to chew over such sentiments ourselves.

But how easy those sentiments fall prey to hate, fear and anger and how easy we turn to killing and violence.

As we watch the possible build up to a US-led war with Iran and bear witness to the wail of propaganda and the deception of peace through the barrel of a gun, the world is told that Iran threatens global stability. Due to what is becoming an incessant pro war media onslaught, an increasing number of US citizens now favour a military attack on Iran’s nuclear installations, despite no credible evidence that indicates Iran is actually developing nuclear weapons at all.

One news report by a US channel even showed a US aircraft carrier passing through the Strait of Hormuz saying the ship was ‘the world’s’ first line of defence in case non-nuclear-armed Iran decided to rein down ‘terror’ on nuclear-armed Israel in response to any first strike attack on Iran by Tel Aviv.

What twisted logic. What arrogance. In the case outlined, any ‘terror’ would be instigated by the said Israeli attack itself on Iran. That was conveniently brushed aside. And for ‘the world’ read only the US and its client states. And by what sort of garbled reasoning is Iran a threat to the US, the most militarily powerful country the world has ever seen – notwithstanding the fact that the US has military bases encircling Iran in neighbouring countries. Yet, the US media, like it did over Iraq, is convincing large sections of the public that Iran, on the opposite side of the world, is a direct threat to the US.

The threat to global peace and stability does not lie with Iran, or with China for that matter or any other bogeyman the Pentagon cares to dream up. Historian William Blum last year wrote that, since 1945, the US has attempted to overthrow more than 50 governments, most of them democratically elected. It has attempted to suppress a populist or national movement in 20 countries. It has grossly interfered in democratic elections in at least 30 countries. It has dropped bombs on the people of more than 30 countries. And it has attempted to assassinate more than 50 foreign leaders.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran is destabilising the world and its aggression must be stopped. No mention from Israel of the assassinations of nuclear scientists in Iran. No mention of cyber attacks on Iran, the funding of anti-government militias inside Iran or other destabilisation strategies waged against Tehran by the US, Mossad, the CIA or MI6.

It’s not a case of who will save us from Iran, but who will save us from the type of terror and instability we have seen instigated by US or US-backed forces in Pakistan, Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq. Who will save us from militarism and imperialism? Who will save us from the economic terror brought to Greece or any other number of countries, including the US itself, by the corporate cartels and the financial institutions who silt away profits in tax havens while expecting ordinary people to bear the brunt of their criminality?

With Washington already having done its level best to destabilise Iran, a huge build up of US troops has been taking place in the region for many months. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) may also be crying wolf over Iran’s intention to acquire a nuclear weapon, which is hardly surprising given that a US diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks describes the Director General of the IAEA Yukiya Amano as “solidly in the US court” and “ready for prime time.”

* * *

WWIII Scenario
* * *

China’s ambassador to the UN has already warned Yukiya Amano not to create “unfounded” evidence to justify a military attack on Iran in the name of halting its nuclear programme.

Having had its influence curtailed in Libya, a top Chinese government official has already warned that any threat to Pakistan would be taken as a direct threat to China, according to the JunshiJia website, which some months ago cited a report by China’s Central TV. The report also stated that as the US war in Afghanistan deepens and the threat of military action against Iran becomes stronger, the threat of confrontation with China increases.

As the West contemplates another dose of murder and mayhem, surely the lies in the build up to the invasion of Iraq are too fresh in the mind for the Western public to be fooled once again. By now they should have seen through the ongoing US-led deception of perpetual war for perpetual peace. Ultimately, there’s no peace to be found in Armageddon.

Let’s hope so because, in all our obscurity and isolation on this insignificant blue dot, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere. We must act to save us from ourselves.

Lebanese president praises Army response to FSA attack

NOVANEWS
Lebanon
Michel Sleiman praised over the weekend steps taken by the Lebanese Army following an attack on the military by the Free Syrian Army in the north.“Sleiman hailed the actions taken by the Lebanese Army Saturday on the outskirts of Arsal to protect Lebanese territory and prevent it from being used by any side,” the president said Saturday in a statement, according to his office. In a statement earlier in the day, the Army said members of the Free Syrian Army attacked a Lebanese military post Friday night near the northern border with Syria. No causalities were reported.
“For the second time in less than a week, a unit from the Free Syrian Army [consisting of] a large number of gunmen entered Lebanese territory overnight via the outskirts of Arsal, where it attacked one of the Lebanese Army’s posts,” the statement said.Following the incident, Army reinforcements were dispatched to the area, while soldiers began pursuing the assailants who escaped toward the mountains as well as some border towns, according to the statement. ”The Army’s leadership affirms that it will not allow any party to use Lebanese territory to implicate Lebanon in ongoing events in neighboring countries,” the Army said.Residents in Arsal, located 10 kilometers from the border with Syria, told The Daily Star that earlier Friday the Army caught an unspecified number of members of the Syrian rebel group, but released them hours later due to pressure by the town’s notables.”The participants also agreed on the need to control the increasingly tense Lebanese-Syrian border, rejected the idea of a buffer zone between the two countries and said a “base or corridor for the smuggling of arms and gunmen” would not be tolerated.

Switzerland confirms That Swiss-made grenades used by gunmen in Syria

Switzerland confirms That Swiss-made grenades used by gunmen in Syria
An investigation conducted by the Swiss government confirmed that Swiss-made grenades, found with the armed terrorist groups in Syria, had been exported years ago by Switzerland to the Untied Arabs Emirates. The Swiss government issued a statement that the investigating committee discovered that the UAE delivered some of the aforementioned grenades to Jordan in 2004 to help it in “Counter- terrorism”, and that the grenades probably found their way to Syria from Jordan.
The statement didn’t mention any intention of taking any step regarding this issue. The investigation into this matter was launched after photographs were published showing grenades bearing the inscriptions “Offensive OHG92″ and “SM 6-03-1″ in the possession of militants’ groups in Syria, with the Swiss newspaper Sonntags Zeitung revealing in July that these grenades are OHG92 grenades manufactured by the Swiss company Ruag, and that they weren’t exported to Syria directly

THE NAKED FACTS REPORT…The Dire Effects of Sequestration and A Middle East In Chaos: Implications for Congress

NOVANEWS
ZIONIST,NEOCON EAGLEN

Mackenzie Eaglen began the discussion by laying out the implications of sequestration for American security interests. Eaglen’s assessment was that sequestration puts U.S. emergency response capabilities at risk. It also threatens budgets for embassy security, the missions in Afghanistan and Yemen, and counterterrorism operations. She also worries that the U.S. is projecting global weakness based on the possibility of sequestration, the looming “fiscal cliff,” a reduced global presence, and an already weak economy. She ended by warning that Western military budgets as a whole are declining, while Eastern budgets are rising.

Robert Zarate said anything beyond the cuts of $487 billion over 10 years would not allow the U.S. to meet its proposed national security strategy. Zarate worried that the budget cuts and rising security risks, such as future interventions in Libya, will create serious problems for U.S. interests. He is concerned about Egypt’s suggestion that it may hold a referendum on its peace treaty with Israel, and urged U.S. leadership to set redlines for its relationship with the new government there.
He highlighted other potentially harmful security issues in the Middle East, such as Iran’s shipment of chemical weapons to Syria through Iraqi airspace and instability in Yemen. He said Afghanistan will continue to be critical to U.S. strategy towards Pakistan, and that Europe is an important logistical hub for U.S. global strategy, especially in the Middle East. He was adamant that the “U.S. is an indispensable pillar in the international system.” He finished by saying U.S. defense spending is fairly modest and domestic spending is the main driver of the approaching reduction of U.S. military capability.

I’M C.I.A. ALL THE WAY

Peter Brookes was alarmed that the “U.S. is unilaterally disarming.” The new Middle East is going to be difficult and is unlikely to favor U.S. interests, he said. In his opinion, Iran is the greatest threat to international security. Their nuclear program has caused great anxiety for Israeli leaders. Further, Iran’s ballistic missile capability allows the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to threaten retaliation on allied regional bases if Iran is preemptively attacked. Brookes was very critical of the Syrian civil war saying, “Syria is a mess and no one is talking about it. It is an international shame. It is highly unlikely that the Obama Administration will approve a military intervention.” Brookes suggested the possibility in Syria for a Libya-like operation to take place, but unlike Obama, he would “prefer to lead from the front.”
He was extremely worried about the loss of key intelligence capabilities due to sequestration, saying “Good intelligence is the first line of defense against terrorism and international surprises.” He ended by saying the U.S. must project power in the Middle East and the defense budget should meet the threat, not vice-versa.
During the Q&A session, the panel was asked what they thought was the best way to convince Iran to end its nuclear program beyond sanctions. Brookes responded, saying the 10 year negotiation process has not at all convinced the regime to change course. He suggested military action might be able to push back the timetable on their development, using the example of Israel’s preemptive strike on the Iraq’s Osirak reactor in the late 1980’s. He closed out the session highlighting the CIA Counter-terrorism Center’s confirmation that the Libya embassy attack was indeed a terrorist operation. He had hoped Congress would stay in session to investigate the attacks further.

The main opposition party has said it is planning to make correspondence between the government and the outlawedKurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) public, if Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan does not answer their questions about whether Turkey’s borders have been negotiated with the outlawed organization. “We are waiting for answers to our questions. We have not yet received anything from them. Why? Could the government be making our national oath [Misak-I Milli] a matter for discussion with a terrorist organization? That’s why we are waiting,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), told the private A Haber in an interview Sept. 14. The CHP will wait until Erdoğan returns from abroad, and will then begin gradually making the letters public if they do not hear anything from government officials. CHP officials have claimed that they have obtained some letters written to senior PKKmembers by government and intelligence officials during secret Oslo talks in late 2009 and 2010.

The secret Oslo talks came to the knowledge of the public after a voice recording between top intelligence officials and PKK members was leaked via the Internet. On the ongoing discussion as to whether the parliamentary immunity of some Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) lawmakers should be lifted, Kılıçdaroğlu advised the AKP and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to adopt a more commonsensical approach. Linking Turkey’s aggressive Syria policy with the rise in terrorist attacks in Turkey, the main opposition leader accused the government of implementing the policies of Western powers rather than keeping their eyes on the national interests of Turkey. “They have criticized us for being pro-Baathist when we urge them on Syria. The polls now show the majority of Turkish people are against an intervention. Is the majority of Turkeynow pro-Baathist?,” he asked.

England, in the capacity of an arbitrator country, signed the text in the name of the two parties, Koç said. According to the text the two sides agreed upon, military operations and terrorist activities would be stopped by both sides; committees would be set up to find a solution to the Kurdish problem; two persons would visit Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the terrorist organization, on behalf of the PKK; politicians arrested in the Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) investigation — the KCK being an umbrella organization that includes the PKK — following Newruz of 2011 would be released; and negotiations would be restarted after the general elections of June 12.Koç, who is also the party spokesperson, brought up some questions regarding the Oslo negotiations last week, and demanded that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan answer the questions.
Noting that Erdoğan hasn’t given any answer to these questions and acts as if he isn’t even aware of them, Koç says: “I wonder why. It is an indication that he is disturbed by the questions we raised.”Koç also demanded to know whether Hakan Fidan, the undersecretary of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), made a commitment in the negotiations, saying: “Anyway, that region will be autonomous. Education services, including the appointments of teachers, will be handled by municipalities and governorates.” Stating that this sentence appeared in the text of the Oslo negotiations, he said: “Now we understand why you made a new legislation to protect Hakan Fidan.
Being aware that it’s you who has the final responsibility in this issue, you see that the judicial process will get you,” addressing his remarks to the prime minister.Saying that they would starkly expose the cooperation between the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the PKK in the days to come, “It’s clear why the prime minister is in panic. Because it’s him who is primarily responsible for what happened. It’s a clear violation of the constitution,” Koç maintained.According to the document the CHP has made public, Turkey and the representatives of the PKK reached an agreement at the negotiations in Oslo on the following issues.1- Both sides express their determination for a solution in the Kurdish issue in the context of the ongoing Oslo and İmralı course.2 – They also confirm compromise reached for the continuation of contacts seeking a permanent solution to the Kurdish question as emphasized in the Oslo and İmralı processes thus far as well as compromise on the necessity for the ending of all works on a constitutional and legal basis.3-Parties shall convey their opinions and suggestions about the draft documents, including the “Draft of Principles of Democratic Solutions to Main Social Problems in Turkey,” “Draft of Principles of Fair Peace in Relations between the State and the Society in Turkey,” and “Draft for the Democratic Solution of the Kurdish Question and Action Plan for Fair Peace” — all submitted by esteemed [Abdullah] Öcalan during the meeting in İmralı on May 10, 2011 — on the first week of June at the latest.
The Kurdish side shall meet the said drafts with appreciation and adopts them in principle.4 – Parties should negotiate over the names for Constitutional Council, Peace Council and Truth and Justice Commission referred to in the abovementioned drafts and should present their agreed list of proposed names in the same time period.5 – The Turkish side shall guarantee that two individuals representing the organization will visit Mr. Öcalan as soon as possible after the elections.6-An end to pressure on members of the press, detentions of political and legal representatives of the Kurdish people and release of people arrested as part of KCK operations would be great steps to solve the Kurdish question.
In this regard, the Turkish side shall first guarantee to release Kurdish politicians arrested after Nevruz celebrations 7-Both sides have to inform the public to have a peaceful election and not to be in a tense atmosphere in the elections.8- It is a necessity that all the military, political and diplomatic operations must end and both political sides should develop compulsory precautions to solve the Kurdish problem ultimately. Therefore, both parties are to end all the operations and military movements until June 15, 2011.9-Both sides decided that they are going to meet in the second half of June 2011 to discuss the topics of the agenda and make further negotiations after preparing for the meeting.

FIFA decision on Kosovo likely to spur Kurdish national aspirations

NOVANEWS

By James M. Dorsey

The Kosovo Football Federation (KFF) and soccer-crazy Kosovars are not the only ones in anxious anticipation of this coming Friday’s executive committee meeting of world soccer body FIFA that is expected to decide the terms on which Kosovo will be allowed to play international friendlies. So will the Kurdistan Football Association and equally soccer-mad Kurds.

Kosovo and Catalonia, which already has been granted permission by FIFA to play international friendlies, are models for Kurdistan to whom soccer is also an important tool in achieving recognition as a nation and statehood.

For Kurdistan, it is an uphill battle. Kosovo and Catalonia have a leg up on Kosovo. Unlike Kurdistan, an autonomous region in Iraq that enjoys no recognition from an international community afraid that its independence would further destabilize the Middle East, Kosovo has been recognized by the United States, 36 European nations including 22 European Union members, and 54 other countries.

Kosovo moreover is a member of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. In addition, Kosovo achieved full sovereignty this month with the ending of international supervision imposed after it unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. For its part, Catalonia’s bid was backed by the Spanish Football Federation.

Kurdistan has none of those assets. The KFF’s relations with the Iraqi soccer body are strained with Iraqis weary of Kurdish efforts to strike out on their own. Unable to breakthrough internationally, Kurdistan organized last June the 5th VIVA world cup for nations that FIFA refuses to recognize. Competing teams included Kurdistan, Northern Cyprus the Tamils, Western Sahara and Darfur.

In a September 14 letter to FIFA, the KFF welcomed FIFA’s decision in May to grant Kosovo the right to play international friendlies and requested that that right be applicable to “football as a whole, national clubs and teams, men’s and women’s, age categories and senior teams.”

The KFF noted that “Kosovo is not a place where football is embryonic and has to be sustained from a low level. The Football Federation of Kosovo became a member of the FA of Yugoslavia in 1946 with equal rights and the pyramid is complete with leagues and competitions from the top down to the bottom totally in line with FIFA and (European soccer body) UEFA requirements.”

That is in many ways true for Kurdistan too, which like Kosovo has Kurds playing in major European clubs. Nonetheless, the hardnosed, realpolitik objections to Kurdistan, for all practical matters a state-in-waiting, following in the shoes of Kosovo and Catalonia outweigh the moral arguments in its favor.

FIFA’s embrace of Kosovo will nevertheless make Kurdistan and others all the more determined to achieve equal soccer status. A statement by Iraqi Kurdish president Massoud Barzani equating sports to politics as a way of achieving recognition adorns Iraqi Kurdistan’s three major stadiums and virtually all of its sports centers and institutions. “We want to serve our nation and use sports to get everything for our nation. We all believe in what the president said,” says KFF president Safin Kanabi, scion of a legendary supporter of Kurdish soccer who led anti-regime protests in Kurdish stadiums during Saddam Hussein’s rule.

“Like any nation, we want to open the door through football. Take Brazil. People know Brazil first and foremost through football. We want to do the same. We want to have a strong team by the time we have a country. We do our job, politicians do theirs. Inshallah (if God wills), we will have a country and a flag” adds Kurdistan national coach Abdullah Mahmoud Muhieddin.

With other words, soccer may not achieve immediate political and diplomatic recognition but it certainly puts nations in the public eye. “Our external objective is primarily to project our identity through sports. Many people don’t know our problem or would not be able to find us on a map. Soccer can change that. We had a French woman visit our refugee camps. When she told children that she was from France, they all replied saying Zidan” – a reference to retired star soccer player Zinedine Zidan, a Frenchman of Algerian origin, argues , said Sheikh Sidi Tigani, president of the Western Sahara Football Federation. “We’ve replaced the gun with a soccer ball,” adds West Saharan national sports director Mohammed Bougleida.

In using soccer as a tool to further nation and statehood, Kosovars, Kurds and West Saharan exploit a tradition established at the time that soccer was introduced in the Middle East and North Africa by the British when soccer was a tool to resist European colonialism and assert Arab interests internationally.

“Our success with VIVA demonstrates our ability to govern ourselves. Our goal for now is to be part of FIFA. All languages are represented in FIFA, only Kurdish isn’t while (FIFA president Sepp) Blatter claims that football is for everyone. We are human. We want the world to understand Kurdistan’s contribution,” says Mr. Kanabi.

Iran official: German firm planted bombs in parts meant for nuclear program

NOVANEWS

Iranian lawmaker says security experts discovered the explosives in components supplied by Siemens and removed them before detonation; firm denies claims.

Haaretz

Iran accused Germany’s Siemens on Saturday of implanting tiny explosives inside equipment the Islamic Republic purchased for its disputed nuclear program, a charge the technology giant denied.

Prominent lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Iranian security experts discovered the explosives and removed them before detonation, adding that authorities believe the booby-trapped equipment was sold to derail uranium enrichment efforts.

“The equipment was supposed to explode after being put to work, in order to dismantle all our systems,” he said. “But the wisdom of our experts thwarted the enemy conspiracy.”

Siemens denied the charge and said its nuclear division has had no business with Iran since the 1979 revolution that led to its current clerical state.

“Siemens rejects the allegations and stresses that we have no business ties to the Iranian nuclear program,” spokesman for the Munich-based company Alexander Machowetz said.

Boroujerdi, who heads the parliamentary security committee, alleged that the explosives were implanted at a Siemens factory and demanded the company take responsibility.

Any sale of nuclear equipment to Iran is banned under U.N. sanctions, raising the possibility that if it indeed has some, it may have been acquired through third parties. Boroujerdi did not say when or how Iran obtained Siemens equipment. Despite a wide array of international sanctions, Germany remains one of Iran’s most important trading partners.

The U.S. and its allies suspect Iran’s nuclear work is aimed at producing weapons. Iran says it only wants to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, and asserts it has been the target of a concerted campaign by Israel, the U.S. and their allies to undermine its nuclear efforts through covert operations.

Some Iranian officials have also suggested in the past that specific European companies may have sold faulty equipment to Iran with the knowledge of American intelligence agencies and their own governments, since the sales would have harmed, rather than helped, the country’s nuclear program.

According to Iran, the alleged campaign has included the abduction of scientists, the sale of faulty equipment and the planting of a destructive computer worm known as Stuxnet, which briefly brought Iran’s uranium enrichment activity to a halt in 2010.

Iran’s nuclear chief, Fereidoun Abbasi, said Monday that separate attacks on Iran’s centrifuges — through tiny explosives meant to disable key parts of the machines — were discovered before the blasts could go off on timers.

Abbasi also told the UN nuclear agency in Vienna that “terrorists and saboteurs” might have infiltrated the International Atomic Energy Agency, after the watchdog’s inspectors arrived at the Fordo underground enrichment facility shortly after power lines were blown up through sabotage on Aug. 17.

Iran has repeatedly accused the IAEA of sending spies in the guise of inspectors to collect information about its nuclear activities, pointing to alleged leaks of information by inspectors to U.S. and other officials.

Five nuclear scientists and researchers have been killed in Iran since 2010. Tehran blames the deaths on Israel’s Mossad spy agency as well as the CIA and Britain’s MI-6. Washington and London have denied any roles. Israel has not commented.

Boroujerdi said the alleged leaks of nuclear information to its adversaries by the IAEA may finally push Tehran to end all cooperation with the agency.

“Iran has the right to cut its cooperation with the IAEA should such violations continue,” he said.
