Continuing Denial of Justice for Palestinian Civilian Victims: Israeli District Court Rejects Judicial Case Filed on Behalf of Abu Selmiya Family

In a further example of the continued denial of Palestinian victims’ right to access to justice, on 06 September 2012, the Israeli District Court in Jaffa delivered a decision rejecting the judicial case filed on behalf of Abu Selmiya family, which lost 9 of its members when the family home was shelled by Israel’s forces in 2006.
The case was rejected under the pretext that the victims were killed in the context of a military operation, and that Israel is not responsible for the damages incurred.  As the legal representative of the victims, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) received a copy of the court’s decision on 25 September 2012.

On 12 July 2006, Israel’s forces shelled a house in al-Sheikh Redwan neighborhood, which belonged to Nabil Mohammed Abdul Latif Abu Selmiya, a lecturer at the Islamic University.  As a result of the attack, the 2-storey house collapsed and 9 members of the family were killed.

PCHR has followed up the family’s case since 13 July 2006.  In this context, PCHR filed a civil complaint to the Compensation Officer at the Israeli Ministry of Defense on 25 July 2006, and a criminal complaint to the Israeli military prosecution on 06 August 2006.  On 07 September 2006, PCHR received an acknowledgement of receipt of the civil complaint from the Compensation Officer at the Israeli Ministry of Defense.  Aside from this, PCHR did not receive any reply from the concerned authorities.  For this reason, PCHR filed a case for compensation before the Israeli civil court on 10 May 2007.

PCHR finds unacceptable the reasoning adopted by the judge in issuing her decision.  The judge accepted the assertion that the Abu Selmiya family was killed as a result of a bomb or missile fired by an F-16 Israeli plane.  However, she exempted Israel from responsibility for this crime under the pretext that the victims were killed in the context of a military operation.  In addition, the judge held that an incident may be identified as a military operation without due consideration of the principle of proportionality, a finding which is in violation of international humanitarian law.

According to the principle of proportionality, which is codified in Article 51 (5) (b) of Additional Protocol 1 to the Geneva Conventions, an attack that may be expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, damage to civilian objects or a combination thereof is considered excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated.

PCHR considers that this decision by a judge of the Israeli civil court demonstrates that the Israeli judicial system is inherently flawed; it prevents the effective prosecution of the perpetrators of serious crimes, thereby denying accountability for victims and contributing to a culture of impunity.

PCHR intends to appeal this case and to pursue all available local litigation measures in an effort to obtain justice for the Abu Selmiya family.  Furthermore, PCHR will continue its efforts to bring Israeli war criminals to justice, by securing their prosecution in international and national courts based on the principles of universal jurisdiction and criminal accountability.  This work is aimed at challenging the culture of impunity and guaranteeing Palestinian victims their right to an effective remedy.

Grimm: “You Cannot Be a Good American and Not Support Israel”

by mantiqaltayr

Congressman Michael Grimm (Shas, New York) needs to go. And so do all Israel-Firsters in our government. Plenty on him below. He is the source of the title of today’s post and you can watch and hear him say it when you click on the first video link the post.

1.Zionist Jews have so totally infiltrated our political system that we are kind of like kids running around barefoot in a cow pasture, we step in it every time we turn around. It’s time to get rid of the Zionist Bullshit that is just is more ubiquitous than both hydrogen and stupidity combined.

Case in point. Some time ago I did a couple of posts warning about the machinations of an Israeli rabbi named Yoshiyahu Yosef  Pinto  who came to New York with his fake charity and his Israeli right-hand man pornographer and set up shop in a multi-million dollar home and immediately got involved in our political system to include raising funds (most likely illegally) for Anthony Weiner of all people.

Well this scumbag has kept at it and now another (former) close  associate of his – who of course just happens to be an Israeli – has been arrested (and stupidly released on bail) for immigration fraud) and just so happens, yet another amazing coincidence, to have been raising money for Congressmen Michael Grimm (Shas, New York), who is a complete total sell out to Israel.

I’m sick of this shit. I want Israel out of American politics. The hell with Israeli withdrawal from occupied Palestine, I was these fuckers to withdraw from the United States. If you are an Israeli, an Israeli firster, or just some stupid dumbass Zionist Christian who worships Israel then get the fuck out of my country.  Go live in that shitty little country until the day comes when the Palestinians reclaim their land.

Ah, I feel better now.

Let’s take a brief look at Pinto’s former buddy, Israeli “business man” Ofer Biton.  Biton was arrested in August for immigration fraud.  Seems he acquired half a million dollars illegally.

” According to the complaint, Mr. Biton deceived the government in June 2010 about the source of $500,000 that he claimed to have put into a new business that was to make him eligible for a permanent visa.”

Although he claimed the money came in the form of a loan from a friend, it seems he made his money the old fashion way:

“In challenging that account, the complaint strongly hints that the money was raised through more coercive means, like extortion.”

Typical Israeli Behavior – TIB. But it gets worse, with Zionism it always does.

” While it was not mentioned in the complaint, Mr. Biton has also emerged as a key figure in the 2009-10 Congressional campaign of Representative Michael G. Grimm, a Republican who represents Staten Island and Brooklyn and is seeking re-election. Though Mr. Biton is barred from raising money for federal election campaigns because he is an illegal immigrant, he is said to have raised much of Mr. Grimm’s campaign money for that race from the rabbi’s followers and left the impression with some of them that he expected help with his visa problems in return if Mr. Grimm was elected.”

Now there is a sort of silver lining to the story. It appears that Biton was ripping off Pinto and Pinto’s “charity” to the tune of millions. Guess he can’t be all bad.

Many things remain unclear about Biton’s prosecution. I get the impression that he is likely involved in dealings with lots of powerful people who cannot be prosecuted and the NYT article I’ve been quoting from indicates that the government is being conservative in its prosecution. However, according to this article the government is going to charge this guy with both extortion and money laundering in cohoots with someone only called “Individual A”. I’d sure like to know who “Individual A” is. And no doubt there is a “B” and “C” and so on.

Now just a few days ago, Biton was released  on bail after eight bail hearings.  Apparently the judge was worried he’d flee the country. Ya think?

Turns out, surprise surprise, that Biton has a quite a bit of a shady history. He was a suspect in an Ecstasy smuggling operation back in 2002 in New York.  Biton was never arrested in that probe but they found some interesting things in his home, including a fake drivers license under a different name.

“Federal authorities are hoping that Biton will rat on Rep. Grimm (R–Bay Ridge), who has been accused of using Biton to collect illegal contributions in his 2010 campaign.

Grimm, who has not been charged with any crime, says he has nothing to do with the charges against Biton. He also claimed Biton never raised any money for him during his 2010 election, even though a scathing New York Times article published earlier this year outlined how the two men allegedly strong-armed Pinto’s followers into contributing to the legislator’s campaign.”

Oh, and remember the porn distributer referred to above? His name is Ben Zion Suky. Seems he and Grimm are kind of tight too.

“One of the rabbi’s closest aides, Benzion Suky, owned a company that distributed porn videos and has settled lawsuits by adult film studios who accused him of selling bootlegged DVDs, according to court records. Suky and his wife gave a combined $9,600 to Grimm’s 2010 campaign and a real estate partnership that lists Suky as its managing member gave $4,800, according to Federal Election Commission records.”

The same article notes that:

“Grimm, a former FBI agent, has acknowledged receiving between $250,000 to $300,000 from Pinto’s supporters but has denied knowledge of any wrongdoing.”

Oh my Allah, he’s a fucking former FBI agent. And he took over a quarter of a million dollars from these creeps? That’s who is running your country.

I kind of sense a new Mantiq al-Tayr invention needs to be in the works. More on that later.

But it gets even worse, with Zionism it always does.

Turns out that former FBI agent and current Israel-Firster Michael Grimm (Shas, New York) was a business partner with someone with very close mob ties, a dude named Bennett Orfaly. Oh, and guess who paid the 1.5 million dollar bail to get Biton out of jail, why it was Bennet Orfaly who is a business partner of Biton too.  Hahahahaha. Could it be that Grimm was investigating mob figures and got back into civilian life with the contacts he made doing so?

These are the people who are running your country. Oh, and these are the people who are investigating evil MOOOOOOOOselims left and right. What a bunch of pigs.

In the meantime, Rabbi Pinto, back in Israel was recently placed under house arrest for bribing and Israeli policeman and possible moneylaundering.

2. Grimm likes to kiss Israel’s ass.  As he says on his own web page: (Note to Shas Party members and FBI agents, the red highlighting is mine.)

The United States and Israel share a special bond, derived not only from our common democratic values, religious affinities and security interests but a shared origin, rising up against overwhelming odds to achieve freedom and independence.  It is this bond that makes the U.S.-Israeli relationship so special, and one I have sought to strengthen in my capacity as co-chairman of the House Republican Israel Caucus, as a member U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, and as the Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee’s Taskforce on Foreign Policy.

He even believes the following:

“You cannot be a good American and not support Israel”

Yup, he says it right here. It’s at the end of the this very short 26-second clip.

These assholes need to get out of my country.

Grimm, of course, visited Israel not too long ago. Read here about his major achievement on that trip.

These people need to go.

But it gets worse, with Zionism it always does.

Grimm is a big Jonathan Pollard supporter and even visited Pollard in prison – and acted pretty weirdly about it.  He believes Pollard should be released so he “can go back to Israel.” Hey Pollard, when they let you out, take Grimm with you.

Here’s Grimm on his Pollard visit:

These people have to go.

But it gets worse. With Zionism it always does. (I should make a T-shirt with this wording, but I digress.)

And of course he is a war monger par excellence, as long as that war is for Israel.

Get your barf bag before you click on the link below.

Is Lucifer the God of Judaism?

‘Most Jews do not like to admit it, but our god is Lucifer — so I wasn’t lying — and we are his chosen people. Lucifer is very much alive.'”  Harold Rosenthal

Most Jews don’t know this. Is it possible that they have been duped, and that Judaism is a satanic cult masquerading as a religion, which has subverted humanity using Freemasonry as its instrument? This question is so urgent that I am reprising this article by Will Newman from 2010.

My own view, expressed in my introduction to Illuminati, is that Judaism is not a religion because its God is not universal, and the Cabala does not renounce worldly desires (lust, greed, power etc.) Thus Illuminati Jews have always been on the forefront of “revolution,” which ultimately is about supplanting God.

WILL NEWMAN, who holds a B.A. in Religion, attended Jewish synagogue, and has relatives involved in Talmudism, Cabala, B’nai Brith and Masonry.

In 1976, Walter White, Jr., “a concerned patriot,” conducted an interview with a young Jew named Harold Rosenthal who was the assistant to Sen. Jacob Javits of New York.

In the interview, later published as “The Hidden Tyranny”, the arrogant Rosenthal belligerently boasts (on tape) that the Jewish people have fabricated certain “falsehoods which work to conceal their nature and protect their status and power.”

Rosenthal debunks the commonly accepted lie that, “the Jews are Israelites, and thus God’s chosen people”.

Rosenthal said in part: ‘Most Jews do not like to admit it, but our god is Lucifer — so I wasn’t lying — and we are his chosen people. Lucifer is very much alive.'” ( Interview 1967.htm)

Lucifer’s goal is to “be like the most High” (Isa 14:14) and to usurp the worship of God (Mat 4:9).

Lucifer’s purpose is to deceive the whole world (Rev 12:9) by transforming himself into an angel of light (2Co 11:4). This is best exemplified by the Freemasons. Their motto of “making good men better” produces a far more favorable public image than the more accurate alternative: “how to become demon-possessed in 33-easy-steps.” The Jewish and Masonic religions both worship the same god.

In most Jewish synagogues, a bright burning flame represents their god. The Hebrew word for Lucifer is “Hillel” (Strong’s Concordance #H1966) meaning “bright light.” Curiously, this is the name chosen for the Jewish student organization. A central text in Cabalism is entitled “the Zohar,” which translates to the book of brightness or splendor.

The Jewish six-pointed star is the highest symbol in the occult and goes by various names–the Star of Moloch/Saturn/Chiun/Remphan. It is a symbol of the union of male and female and is identical in meaning to the Masonic square and compass, which is also a six-pointed symbol around the letter “G” representing the generative sexual act. In place of the “G” we find יהוה amidst many Jewish stars.
The Hebrew symbol חי worn around the necks of many Jews ostensibly symbolizes “life” (lachaim). The word literally translates to a “living thing” or “beast” (H2416); this symbol is an idol for The Beast.

The Jewish name for god is represented by the tetragrammaton יהוה (YHVH) can be pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah. The significance of God’s name is repeatedly emphasized throughout the scriptures.

When dissected in the Hebrew, the true definition of Jehovah (Yah-Hovah) is revealed. “Yah” (#H3050) means “god”. “Hovah” (#H1942) translates to “eagerly coveting, falling, desire, ruin, calamity, iniquity, mischief, naughtiness, noisome, perverse, very wickedness.”

Jehovah is synonymous with Baal:
Baali (#H1180) From ba’al with pron. Suff.; my master; Baali, a symbolical name for Jehovah — Baali.”
The Jewish Encyclopedia (“Adonai and Ba’al”) reveals: “The name Ba’al , apparently as an equivalent for Yhwh.”
Since the days of Jeremiah, the Jews have forgotten their god’s name and replaced it with the title “Baal” or “YHVH”: The lying prophets “Which think to cause my people to forget my [God’s]name…as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.” (Jer 23:27).

YHVH and Ba’al both represent the god of sexual perversion and wickedness, Satan.

However, Jews claim that this name (YHVH) is not to be spoken aloud, despite God’s command to declare His name throughout the earth (Exo 9:16). Why ignore this commandment?

Judaism claims to be the authority on the Old Testament; however they do not practice what they preach. They dress in black, the color of death, in spite of the scriptural precept to wear white (Ecc 9:8), reject Christ as Messiah (who is prophesied throughout the Old Testament) and refuse to speak “God’s name” in violation of the scriptures.
By reverencing their name of God (YHVH) by not speaking it, Jews create an air of mystery and holiness around the name while enhancing the curiosity surrounding its pronunciation and power. When curious Jews and non-Jews alike see the “sacred” tetragrammaton being used in occult practice, they are intrigued by the prospective that these sorcerers have harnessed the mystical powers of the name.
Wicca, Satanism, Tarot, occult Catholicism, Masonry and Cabalism use their knowledge of the “sacred name of god” as bait to recruit cult members. If the name were not hidden, these cults would lack a critical tool in their recruitment processes. They could not offer this forbidden knowledge if the Jews, the self-proclaimed authority on God, spoke this name openly.
The mystery religions and witchcraft covens owe a great debt to Judaism for conditioning the mainstream to accept the importance and secrecy of this name. The vocal praise of the name YHVH is reserved for the “elect” who learn the Cabala (and pay money to do so) and is forbidden by the “profane.” Judaic doctrine is fundamental to selling the occult as a righteous practice.
Satan is the author of confusion and goes by many names. Many of the ancient pagan deities were Satan and his angels in other forms (“The Two Babylons,” by A. Hislop). The Jews employ a number of false names for god in their rituals, which are also alternate titles for Satan and other powerful demons.
In the same manner, the Black Magician and Satanist invokes demons by name. In the Satanic Bible, Anton LaVey (Jewish) provides an extensive list of “infernal names” that, when summoned, provide the practitioner with super human abilities namely intelligence, power, skills in manipulation, enhanced creativity, material wealth, and the satisfaction of diverse lusts.

Jewish prayers are conducted in Yiddish, a composite language far from the intended pronunciation of the original Hebrew (A.C. Hitchcock, “The Synagogue of Satan,” 1). The prayers in modern synagogues are nothing more than disguised demonic invocations. They are hypnotic spells, similar to the Enochian language of the Church of Satan.

Young Jews spend countless hours preparing for their Bar Mitzvah, which consists of memorizing long chants and proper cadence and tone. Most who complete the Bar Mitzvah will not be able to translate more than a handful of words. These young men and women have no idea what they are saying or to whom they are praying. Jews are invoking demons named adonai, elohim, el shaddai, zeba’ot, diyenu (Diana) et al in their rituals.

Vain repetitions and head-bobbing during Jewish prayers aid the entrance into a trance state. Large numbers of atheistic Jews engage in the pseudo-religious worship of status and knowledge.

As Bill Cooper writes, “The WORSHIP (a lot different from STUDY) of knowledge, science, or technology is Satanism in its purest form, and its god is Lucifer” (“Behold A Pale Horse,” 70). Judaism fills its members with the same Satanic powers as the Church of Satan and Freemasonry.

The foundation of Cabalism is identical to Satanism: the reversal of the roles of God and Satan. It is the pursuit of hidden (occult) knowledge which allows one to achieve god-like abilities by calling on the so-called names of god. These are the names of fallen angels/demons/spirit guides who are the gatekeepers to occult knowledge (Gen 6:4, Jubilees, Enoch). While not all Jews actively practice Cabala, they all accept the highest Cabalistic name as their god–YHVH.

The infamous Cabalist and Satanist Aleister Crowley writes, “There are thus 72 ‘Angels’…these [names] are derived from the “Great Name of God”…The “Name” is Tetragrammaton: I.H.V.H., commonly called Jehovah. He is the Supreme Lord of…the whole Universe (“The Book of Thoth,” 43). A number of other secret pronunciations of YHVH are used in the occult in addition to Yahweh and Jehovah.

“Of the 54 sacred names in the Jewish kabbalah, the primary one is YHWH” (R. Hathaway “Sacred Name of God? Or Blasphemy,”

The Jewish creed, the Shema, states: “our Lord is One,” so why invoke these other names?

The secret of the ancient Egyptians, and their modern disciples, the Freemasons, is the art of demonology for gaining power–mainly through the devil, Jehovah.

In the Royal Arch degree, the Freemason ” acknowledge[s] that the devil, in the guise of Jahbuhlun, is his sacred Lord”–the name Jahbulun being a “composite of Jahweh, Baal, and Osiris.” He chants “Jah-buh-lun, Jah-buh-lun, Jah-buh-lun, Je-hov-ah” (Texe Marrs, Codex Magica, Ch. 4). Albert Pike discusses the Cabalistic/Masonic significance of IAHOVAH in great length in Morals & Dogma (66, 213, 401, 467, 519).

The name YHVH was injected into the text of the Old Testament by the Pharisees and others who practiced Babylonian Satanism (the precursor to Cabalism and Talmudism). For those who don’t believe the Talmud is Satanic it proclaims that Christ is in Hell boiling in excrement and semen (Gittin, 56b,57a).

An agreement was forged between the Jewish Masoretes and the Catholic Church c. 1000 A.D. to change the name of God in the Hebrew Old Testament to the pagan name Yahweh/Jehovah via the tetragrammaton (

This explains Rosenthal’s saying, “We are amazed by the Christians’ stupidity in receiving our teachings and propagating them as their own.”

In Henry Ford’s words, “The Christian cannot read his Bible except through Jewish spectacles, and, therefore, reads it wrong.” (“The International Jew,” Vol. IV, 238).

The demonic disdain for humanity exhibited by the Luciferian Jew, Harold Rosenthal, typifies the end result of a lethal amalgamation: Jewish religious ritual combined with the worship of knowledge and self. The Jews as a people, by rejecting God and/or accepting Jehovah, have been given over “to a reprobate mind…Being filled with all unrighteousness…” (Rom 1:28-31).

Of course, Mr. Rosenthal was a member of an elite, openly Satanic minority among the Jewish people. Everyday Jews do not know that the god of their faith is in fact Satan hiding behind a mystical name. It is of no consequence to Satan whether he is worshiped deliberately or through subtle lies and deceptions (Gen 3).

The wise Solomon asks, “what is [God’s] name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?” (Pro 30:4). God’s name is אהיה AHAYAH (sometimes transliterated Ehyeh) meaning I AM. This is the name given to Moses along with the Law. “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you…this is my memorial unto all generations.”(Ex 3:14-15). “I AM the Lord thy God…thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exo 32:4-5).

Syria, Turkey, Israel and the Greater Middle East Energy War

Global Research

On October 3, 2012 the Turkish military launched repeated mortar shellings inside Syrian territory. The military action, which was used by the Turkish military, conveniently, to establish a ten-kilometer wide no-man’s land “buffer zone” inside Syria, was in response to the alleged killing by Syrian armed forces of several Turkish civilians along the border.

There is widespread speculation that the one Syrian mortar that killed five Turkish civilians well might have been fired by Turkish-backed opposition forces intent on giving Turkey a pretext to move militarily, in military intelligence jargon, a ‘false flag’ operation.[1]

Turkey’s Muslim Brotherhood-friendly Foreign Minister, the inscrutable Ahmet Davutoglu, is the government’s main architect of Turkey’s self-defeating strategy of toppling its former ally Bashar Al-Assad in Syria.[2]

According to one report since 2006 under the government of Islamist Sunni Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his pro-Brotherhood AKP party, Turkey has become a new center for the Global Muslim Brotherhood.[3] A well-informed Istanbul source relates the report that before the last Turkish elections, Erdogan’s AKP received a “donation” of $10 billion from the Saudi monarchy, the heart of world jihadist Salafism under the strict fundamentalist cloak of Wahabism. [4] Since the 1950’s when the CIA brought leading members in exile of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood to Saudi Arabia there has been a fusion between the Saudi brand of Wahabism and the aggressive jihadist fundamentalism of the Brotherhood.[5]

The Turkish response to the single Syrian mortar shell, which was met with an immediate Syrian apology for the incident, borders on a full-scale war between two nations which until last year were historically, culturally, economically and even in religious terms, closest of allies.

That war danger is ever more serious. Turkey is a full member of NATO whose charter explicitly states, an attack against one NATO state is an attack against all. The fact that nuclear-armed Russia and China both have made defense of the Syrian Bashar al-Assad regime a strategic priority puts the specter of a World War closer than most of us would like to imagine.

In a December 2011 analysis of the competing forces in the region, former CIA analyst Philip Giraldi made the following prescient observation:

NATO is already clandestinely engaged in the Syrian conflict, with Turkey taking the lead as U.S. proxy. Ankara’s foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, has openly admitted that his country is prepared to invade as soon as there is agreement among the Western allies to do so. The intervention would be based on humanitarian principles, to defend the civilian population based on the “responsibility to protect” doctrine that was invoked to justify Libya. Turkish sources suggest that intervention would start with creation of a buffer zone along the Turkish-Syrian border and then be expanded. Aleppo, Syria’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, would be the crown jewel targeted by liberation forces.

Unmarked NATO warplanes are arriving at Turkish military bases close to Iskenderum on the Syrian border, delivering weapons from the late Muammar Gaddafi’s arsenals as well as volunteers from the Libyan Transitional National Council who are experienced in pitting local volunteers against trained soldiers, a skill they acquired confronting Gaddafi’s army. Iskenderum is also the seat of the Free Syrian Army, the armed wing of the Syrian National Council. French and British special forces trainers are on the ground, assisting the Syrian rebels while the CIA and U.S. Spec Ops are providing communications equipment and intelligence to assist the rebel cause, enabling the fighters to avoid concentrations of Syrian soldiers. [6]

Little noted was the fact that at the same day as Turkey launched her over-proportional response in the form of a military attack on Syrian territory, one which was still ongoing as of this writing, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) undertook what was apparently an action to divert Syria’s attention from Turkey and to create the horror scenario of a two-front war just as Germany faced in two world wars. The IDF made a significant troop buildup on the strategic Golan Heights bordering the two countries, which, since Israel took it in the 1967 war, has been an area of no tension.[7]

The unfolding new phase of direct foreign military intervention by Turkey, supported de facto by Israel’s right-wing Netanyahu regime, curiously enough follows to the letter a scenario outlined by a prominent Washington neo-conservative Think Tank, The Brookings Institution. In their March 2012 strategy white paper, Saving Syria: Assessing Options for Regime Change, Brookings geo-political strategists laid forth a plan to misuse so-called humanitarian concern over civilian deaths, as in Libya in 2011, to justify an aggressive military intervention into Syria, something not done before this.[8]

The Brookings report states the following scenario:

Israel could posture forces on or near the Golan Heights and, in so doing, might divert regime forces from suppressing the opposition. This posture may conjure fears in the Assad regime of a multi-front war, particularly if Turkey is willing to do the same on its border and if the Syrian opposition is being fed a steady diet of arms and training.[9]

This seems to be precisely what is unfolding in the early days of October 2012. The authors of the Brookings report are tied to some of the more prominent neo-conservative warhawks behind the Bush-Cheney war on Iraq. Their sponsor, the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, includes current foreign policy advisers to Republican right-wing candidate Mitt Romney, the open favorite candidate of Israel’s Netanyahu.

The Brookings Saban Center for Middle East Policy which issued the report, is the creation of a major donation from Haim Saban, an Israeli-American media billionaire who also owns the huge German Pro7 media giant. Haim Saban is open about his aim to promote specific Israeli interests with his philanthropy. The New York Times once called Saban, “a tireless cheerleader for Israel.” Saban told the same newspaper in an interview in 2004, “I’m a one-issue guy and my issue is Israel.” [10]

The scholars at Saban as well as its board have a clear neo-conservative and Likud party bias. They include, past or present, Shlomo Yanai, former head of military planning, Israel Defense Forces; Martin Indyk, former US Ambassador to Israel and founder of the pro-Israel Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), a major Likud policy lobby in Washington. Visiting fellows have included Avi Dicter, former head of Israel’s Shin Bet; Yosef Kupperwasser, former Head, Research Department, Israeli Defense Force’s Directorate of Military Intelligence. Resident scholars also include Bruce Riedel, a 30 year CIA Middle East expert and Obama Afghan adviser; [11] Kenneth Pollack, another former CIA Middle East expert who was indicted in an Israel espionage scandal when he was a national security official with the Bush Administration. [12]

Why would Israel want to get rid of the “enemy she knows,” Bashar al-Assad, for a regime controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood? Then Israel’s security would seemingly be threatened by the emergence of hard-line Muslim Brotherhood regimes in Egypt to her south and Syria to her North, perhaps soon also in Jordan.

The geopolitical dimension

The significant question to be asked at this point is what could bind Israel, Turkey, Qatar in a form of unholy alliance on the one side, and Assad’s Syria, Iran, Russia and China on the other side, in such deadly confrontation over the political future of Syria? One answer is energy geopolitics.

What has yet to be fully appreciated in geopolitical assessments of the Middle East is the dramatically rising importance of the control of natural gas to the future of not only Middle East gas producing countries, but also of the EU and Eurasia including Russia as producer and China as consumer.

Natural gas is rapidly becoming the “clean energy” of choice to replace coal and nuclear electric generation across the European Union, most especially since Germany’s decision to phase out nuclear after the Fukushima disaster. Gas is regarded as far more “environmentally friendly” in terms of its so-called “carbon footprint.” The only realistic way EU governments, from Germany to France to Italy to Spain, will be able to meet EU mandated CO2 reduction targets by 2020 is a major shift to burning gas instead of coal. Gas reduces CO2 emissions by 50-60% over coal.[13] Given that the economic cost of using gas instead of wind or other alternative energy forms is dramatically lower, gas is rapidly becoming the energy of demand for the EU, the biggest emerging gas market in the world.

Huge gas resource discoveries in Israel, in Qatar and in Syria combined with the emergence of the EU as the world’s potentially largest natural gas consumer, combine to create the seeds of the present geopolitical clash over the Assad regime.

Syria-Iran-Iraq Gas pipeline

In July 2011, as the NATO and Gulf states’ destabilization operations against Assad in Syria were in full swing, the governments of Syria, Iran and Iraq signed an historic gas pipeline energy agreement which went largely unnoticed amid CNN reports of the Syrian unrest. The pipeline, envisioned to cost $10 billion and take three years to complete, would run from the Iranian Port Assalouyeh near the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, to Damascus in Syria via Iraq territory. Iran ultimately plans then to extend the pipeline from Damascus to Lebanon’s Mediterranean port where it would be delivered to EU markets. Syria would buy Iranian gas along with a current Iraqi agreement to buy Iranian gas from Iran’s part of South Pars field.

South Pars, whose gas reserves lie in a huge field that is divided between Qatar and Iran in the Gulf, is believed to be the world’s largest single gas field. [14] De facto it would be a Shi’ite gas pipeline from Shi’ite Iran via Shi’ite-majority Iraq onto Shi’ite-friendly Alawite Al-Assad’s Syria.

Adding to the geopolitical drama is the fact that the South Pars gas find lies smack in the middle of the territorial divide in the Persian Gulf between Shi’ite Iran and the Sunni Salafist Qatar. Qatar also just happens to be a command hub for the Pentagon’s US Central Command, headquarters of United States Air Forces Central, No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group RAF, and the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing of the USAF. In brief Qatar, in addition to owning and hosting the anti-Al-Assad TV station Al-Jazeera, which beams anti-Syria propaganda across the Arab world, Qatar is tightly linked to the US and NATO military presence in the Gulf.

Qatar apparently has other plans with their share of the South Pars field than joining up with Iran, Syria and Iraq to pool efforts. Qatar has no interest in the success of the Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline, which would be entirely independent of Qatar or Turkey transit routes to the opening EU markets. In fact it is doing everything possible to sabotage it, up to and including arming Syria’s rag-tag “opposition” fighters, many of them Jihadists sent in from other countries including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Libya.

Further adding to Qatar’s determination to destroy the Syria-Iran-Iraq gas cooperation is the discovery in August 2011 by Syrian exploration companies of a huge new gas field in Qara near the border with Lebanon and near to the Russian-leased Naval port of Tarsus on the Syrian Mediterranean.[15] Any export of Syrian or Iranian gas to the EU would go through the Russian-tied port of Tarsus. According to informed Algerian sources, the new Syrian gas discoveries, though the Damascus government is downplaying it, are believed to equal or exceed those of Qatar.

As Asia Times’ knowledgeable analyst Pepe Escobar pointed out in a recent piece, Qatar’s scheme calls for export of its huge gas reserves via Jordan’s Gulf of Aqaba, a country where a Muslim Brotherhood threat to the dictatorship of the King is also threatening. The Emir of Qatar has apparently cut a deal with the Muslim Brotherhood in which he backs their international expansion in return for a pact of peace at home in Qatar. A Muslim Brotherhood regime in Jordan and also in Syria, backed by Qatar, would change the entire geopolitics of the world gas market suddenly and decisively in Qatar’s favor and to the disadvantage of Russia, Syria, Iran and Iraq. [16] That would also be a staggering negative blow to China.

As Escobar points out, “it’s clear what Qatar is aiming at: to kill the US$10 billion Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline, a deal that was clinched even as the Syria uprising was already underway. Here we see Qatar in direct competition with both Iran (as a producer) and Syria (as a destination), and to a lesser extent, Iraq (as a transit country). It’s useful to remember that Tehran and Baghdad are adamantly against regime change in Damascus.” He adds, “if there’s regime change in Syria – helped by the Qatari-proposed invasion – things get much easier in Pipelineistan terms. A more than probable Muslim Brotherhood (MB) post-Assad regime would more than welcome a Qatari pipeline. And that would make an extension to Turkey much easier.” [17]

The Israeli Gas dilemma

Further complicating the entire picture is the recent discovery of huge offshore Israeli natural gas resources.

The Tamar natural gas field off the coast of northern Israel is expected to begin yielding gas for Israel’s use in late 2012. The game-changer was a dramatic discovery in late 2010 of an enormous natural gas field offshore of Israel in what geologists call the Levant or Levantine Basin. In October 2010 Israel discovered a massive “super-giant” gas field offshore in what it declares is its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). [18]

The find is some 84 miles west of the Haifa port and three miles deep. They named it Leviathan after the Biblical sea monster. Three Israeli energy companies in cooperation with the Houston Texas Noble Energy announced initial estimates that the field contained 16 trillion cubic feet of gas—making it the world’s biggest deep-water gas find in a decade, adding more discredit to “peak oil” theories that the planet is about to see dramatic and permanent shortages of oil, gas and coal. To put the number in perspective, that one gas field, Leviathan, would hold enough reserves to supply Israel’s gas needs for 100 years.[19]

Energy self-sufficiency had eluded the state of Israel since its founding in 1948. Abundant oil and gas exploration had repeatedly been undertaken with meager result. Unlike its energy-rich Arab neighbors, Israel seemed out of luck. Then in 2009 Israel’s Texas exploration partner, Noble Energy, discovered the Tamar field in the Levantine Basin some 50 miles west of Israel’s port of Haifa with an estimated 8.3 tcf (trillion cubic feet) of highest quality natural gas. Tamar was the world’s largest gas discovery in 2009.

Haqqani Network is Afghan Entity

By Sajjad Shaukat

American top officials have continuously accused Pakistan Army and country’s intelligence agency, ISI of supporting North Waziristan-based Haqqani network for killing Americans in Afghanistan. In June, this year, US Defence Secretary of State, Leon Panetta repeatedly stated that drone attacks would continue on safe havens of terrorists Pakistan offered to insurgents in Afghanistan, while blaming the Haqqani insurgents for some of the deadliest attacks in Afghanistan.

In fact, as part of conspiracy against Pakistan in order to continue intermittent predator strikes on North Waziristan, and to make ground for a full-fledged invasion of tribal areas, especially against Haqqani militants, on September 7, this year, US designated the Haqqani network a foreign terrorist organisation.

In response, to US move, on September 8, Taliban said that there was “no separate entity in Afghanistan by the name of Haqqani,” adding that the network’s founder and its fighters were totally loyal to Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar.”  They stated that such moves against its members in the past had no impact on their war of liberation, and “This latest announcement will also be ineffective.”

During her visit to Islamabad in October 20, 2011, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton agreed with Pakistan’s stance, saying, “Now US is realising that launching new military operation in North Waziristan does not suit Pakistan’s situation.” She had emphasised Islamabad to help and “encourage Taliban and Haqqani militants to enter negotiations in good faith,” adding that “Pakistan has a critical role to play in supporting Afghan reconciliation and ending the conflict.”

While responding to Hillary Clinton’s statement with skepticism, a senior Haqqani commander told Reuters on October 25, 2011 that the “Afghan Haqqani group will not take part in any peace talks with the United States which will not be able to find a possible solution to the Afghan conflict unless they hold talks with the Taliban—led by the Taliban leadership seriously. He revealed, “Americans had made several attempts for talks which we rejected as we are an integral part of the Taliban led by Mullah Omar…we are united to liberate our homeland-Afghanistan.

It is of particular attention that on September 17, 2012, in a rare interview by telephone from an undisclosed location, leader of the Haqqani militant network, Sirajuddin Haqqani disclosed that the group has become so confident after battlefield gains in Afghanistan that “it no longer has sanctuaries in Pakistan, and instead, felt secure inside Afghanistan.”

Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik also remarked on July 12 that Haqqani network was an Afghan entity and Pakistan had nothing to do with it.

On the other hand, by self-created differentiation between Taliban led by Mullah Umer and Haqqani group, US intends to implement anti-Pakistan designs. In this regard, in the last 10 months, strikes by the CIA-operated unmanned aircraft on North Waziristan have coincided with the statements of US high officials who have accelerated their pressure on Islamabad to launch joint military operations in North Wazirisan. America which has always emphasised Pakistan to ‘do more’ against the militants has now focused North Waziristan. For this aim, their media and high officials have started a well-organised campaign in the western countries that Haqqanis are the real terrorists who are perennially targeting NATO installations in Afghanistan. Another aim is to get the sympathies of other NATO countries to invade North Wiziristan.

Meanwhile, Indian officials and media have also started propaganda by projecting that US troops may get directly involved in North Waziristan in case Pakistan Army undertakes an operation in that area. New Delhi is creating doubts about Pakistan’s commitment in relation to war against terrorism and its cooperation with US and international community.

Besides, false reports had already started by the US and foreign media just after the meeting of DG ISI Lt. Gen. Zaheerul Islam with CIA Director David Petraeus. In this context, the Wall Street Journal pointed out on August 4, “the two spy chiefs agreed on joint counter terrorism campaigns and operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan…the campaigns would target the sanctuaries of Haqqani militant group in North Waziristan.” The Journal explained, “Pakistanis have named the planned offensive in North Waziristan as Operation, Tight Screw.”

On August 15, US State Department spokeswoman also stated that the US was in talks with Pakistan and Afghanistan on joint action against Haqqani group.

It was due to the rumours spread by external media and also unfortunately by our internal political parties and media that in the recent past, reports of military operation in North Waziristan caused a lot of panic among the majority of locals who began fleeing the area.

Notably, on August 7, a military spokesman also rejected the report of the Wall Street Journal and other media speculations about joint operation (Tight Screw) in North Waziristan. Taking cognisance of US intentions and baseless media reports, after his meeting with Gen. James N. Mattis, Commander US CENTCOM, on August 17, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani categorically dispelled the speculative reporting in foreign media regarding joint operations in North Waziristan. He reiterated, “We might, if necessary, undertake operations in NWA, in the timeframe of our choosing and requirements” as “determined only by our political and military requirements. It will never be a result of any outside pressure.”

In fact, US has been building international pressure on Pakistan to launch military operation in North Waziristan. Under this pretext, America seeks to fulfill a number of sinister designs. First, US wants that like the militants of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Haqqanis must also conduct acts of sabotage in Pakistan owing to the drone attacks which would result in more terrorism in Pakistan as these strikes are already provoking the tribal people against Pakistan’s security forces, and are increasing recruitment of insurgents. Second, now US seeks to incite the Haqqanis against Pakistan’s security forces. Third, by setting aside the resolution of parliament, new rapprochement between Islamabad and Washington after the reopening of NATO supply routes to Afghanistan in wake of public protests, and despite the opposition of civil and military leadership, without bothering for any internal backlash, America wants to create a rift between Pak Army on one side and the political and religious parties led by people on the other. And on October 6, Chairman Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has launched a ‘peace march’ to South Waziristan so as to protest against the drone strikes, while Taliban has stated that Imran Khan is doing it for political purposes to gain people’s sympathies.

Fourth, under the cover of Haqqani militants, US-led NATO forces want to make Pakistan a scapegoat of their defeat in Afghanistan, and want to pacify their public by raising false allegations against Pak Army and ISI. Fifth, American President Obama also intends to win second tenure in the presidential election by shifting blame game of US misadventure in Afghanistan towards Islamabad. Sixth, Pakistan is the only nuclear country in the Islamic World. Hence, US, India and Israel seem determined to weaken it by targeting the North Waziristan by propaganda that safe havens of Haqqani insurgents exist in Pakistan. In this context, other subversive activities arranged by American CIA, Indian RAW and Israeli Mossad in various cities of Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan are also part of the same game.

However, America must grasp ground realties; if it is serious in establishing stability and peace in Afghanistan with the assistance of Pakistan as NATO troops are going to commence withdrawal from Afghanistan, which will be completed in 2014. In this regard, first of all, it should end blame game against Islamabad in relation to sanctuaries of Haqqani militants in Pak tribal areas including all anti-Pakistan activities. America should also take notice that since April 2011, heavily-armed insurgents from Afghanistan’s side entered Pakistan’s region intermittently, targeting the security check posts and other infrastructure. US-led NATO forces must end this infiltration including drone attacks on tribal areas. US should also know that Pak-Afghan border is porous with heavy terrain. So, appropriate coordination between NATO and Pakistan forces is essential to prevent cross-border incursions.

Consequently, instead of insisting upon military operation in North Waziristan, America must realise the fact that Haqqani network is Afghan entity.

New US-Canada Border Regime: Deep Integration and the North-American Homeland

Global Research

By Dana Gabriel

The Beyond the Border deal announced in December 2011 represents the most significant step forward in U.S.-Canada cooperation since NAFTA. Dual action plans are further transforming trade, regulatory and security relations between both countries. Over the next few years, various cross-border initiatives will be rolled out, with some beginning as pilot programs. The U.S. and Canada have laid the framework for a new border regime which is taking their partnership to the next level and pushing the continent closer to a fully integrated North America security perimeter.

The Department of Homeland Security and Canada Border Services Agency recently announced the Phase I pilot of the Entry/Exit program which is part of the Beyond the Border action plan. It will include collecting and exchanging biographic information of third-country nationals, permanent residents of Canada, and lawful permanent residents of the U.S. at four selected land border ports of entry. A fact sheet stressed how this, “is an important step as both countries move towards a coordinated entry/exit system that will strengthen border and immigration programs, support law enforcement, and accelerate the legitimate flow of people and goods into Canada and the United States and across our common border.”

The Canadian government is also advancing plans to use biometrics for immigration and border security that would bring them in line with the U.S. and other countries. The perimeter security agreement called for implementing, “systematic and automated biographic information-sharing capability by 2013 and biometric information-sharing capability by 2014.” A North American biometric identification system could be used to restrict, track and trace our movements.

On October 4, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Transport Canada officials announced the extension of the expedited screening initiative, TSA Pre✓(TM) which will now include lanes for Canadian NEXUS members at 27 participating U.S. airports. Canadian Minister of State For Transport Steven Fletcher explained that, “The Government of Canada and the United States are delivering on commitments to include Canadian NEXUS members in designated TSA Pre✓(TM) lanes as part of the Beyond the Border Action Plan.”

He went on to say, “This will mean smarter and faster air travel for Canadian NEXUS members traveling within the U.S., while maintaining a high level of aviation security.” TSA Administrator John Pistole acknowledged that, “The inclusion of Canadian NEXUS members in TSA Pre✓(TM) is an important step in further harmonizing the security screening process between the U.S. and Canada.” Under NEXUS, pre-screened travelers are granted expedited access across the border, by air, land or sea. As part of the perimeter security deal, both countries are expanding and integrating trusted traveler programs.

The Next-Generation pilot project which would permit U.S. agents on Canadian soil is on hold while legal issues are being resolved. The security perimeter agreement stated that both countries would, “create integrated teams in areas such as intelligence and criminal investigations, and an intelligence-led uniformed presence between ports of entry.” The plan which is a land-based version of the Shiprider program was scheduled to be deployed this summer. Allowing U.S. agents to cross the border and pursue suspects into Canada poses a threat to sovereignty and could infringe on personal privacy laws. The pilot project is part of the process of acclimating U.S. policing activities in Canada and could later be expanded.

Last month, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency established a pre-clearance initiative pilot project on import re-inspection activities for fresh meat. This is tied to the Beyond the Border deal and is aimed at streamlining meat inspections at the U.S.-Canada border. Just as the joint program was being rolled out, XL Foods in Alberta, Canada announced a massive recall of meat products due to E. coli contamination. This came on the heels of a letter from the Safe Food Coalitionto the USDA citing concerns that food safety could be compromised and requesting that the border inspection pilot be halted.

Some of the potential tainted meat could have been shipped to at least eight U.S. states. In a press statement, the Executive Director of Food & Water Watch, Wenonah Hauter pointed out that, “the Obama Administration and the Harper Government in Canada have been plotting to eliminate the very border inspection program that tipped off authorities that there was a major problem brewing with the products originating from the XL plant.” Plans to further deregulate food safety inspections could lead to more trouble in the future.

In September, Transport Canada and the United States Coast Guard launched a pilot project that will include joint Port State Control inspections of non-Canadian and non-U.S. flagged vessels in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway. Rear Adm. Mike Parks, Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Ninth District described how, “This initiative is in keeping with President Obama’s and Prime Minister Harper’s Beyond the Border Perimeter Security Initiative protecting the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway region, which provides common access to the heart of North America.

Our goal is to make vessel inspections more efficient and facilitate American and Canadian business on both sides of our shared border.” The program is outlined in the Regulatory Cooperation Council action plan and establishes a, “safety and security framework for the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway that will align the two countries’ regulatory requirements. This pilot project will look for efficiencies in order to reduce duplicate inspections and impediments to trade.” When completed, recommendations will be made on whether to form a permanent binational foreign vessel inspection program.

NAFTA partners, in conjunction with multinational corporations and influential think tanks are pushing for deeper North American integration. As far as the upcoming U.S. election goes, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are both committed globalists and have no intentions of upholding the constitution or protecting what is left of American sovereignty. The notion of real choice is now even more of an illusion. Minus the Democrat and Republican rhetoric, it’s essentially the same policies, same agenda, and the same team. It doesn’t matter who wins the presidency, the path towards a North American Union will continue.

Israeli violations of international law and international humanitarian law in the oPt continued during the reporting period (04 – 10 October 2012):

During the reporting period, IOF extra-judicially executed 1 Palestinian man and wounded a second. A total of 14 Palestinians were wounded in the Gaza Strip in the reporting period, 12 of whom were confirmed civilians, including 6 children and 1 woman. In addition, a Palestinian laborer was wounded in the West Bank when Israeli settlers fired at him. Dozens of protestors were wounded in peaceful demonstrations against the annexation wall in the West Bank.

In the Gaza Strip, IOF extra-judicially executed 1 Palestinian man and wounded a second. In addition, 8 civilians were wounded in the same incident, including 4 children and 1 woman, the mother of two of the injured children. On 07 October 2012, an Israeli warplane fired two missiles at two men dressed in civilian clothing who were riding a motorcycle, as they were passing by Taha Hussain Elementary School in the Al-Brazil neighborhood, south of Rafah. It should be noted that the attack was carried out at the end of the school day, moments before the students began to leave the school. Following the attack, the Israeli military spokesperson announced that the raid had targeted two alleged members of the Global Jihad organization (the Mujahidin Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem). The Israeli spokesperson claimed that the two targeted persons were planning to implement a complex military operation in Sinai in the coming period.

On 08 October 2012, IOF positioned east of Khan Yunis at the border fence between Gaza and Israel shelled the villages to the east of Khan Yunis. As a result, 5 Palestinians were wounded, among them 4 civilians from the same family, including 2 children. In addition, two minarets were damaged, those of the Ammar Ben Yasser mosque in Abassan village and the al-Hidaya mosque in Khuza’a village.

Towards a Western Retreat from Syria

Global Research
by Thierry Meyssan

The Syria war drags on. Continuing it has become too expensive and too dangerous for its neighbors. Russia, which aims to re-establish itself in the Middle East, is trying to show the United States that it is in their best interest to allow Moscow to resolve the conflict.

The military situation in Syria is turning against those in Washington and Brussels who hoped to change the regime there by force. Two successive attempts to take Damascus have failed and it has become clear that that objective cannot be achieved.

JPEG - 23.6 kb
Where NATO has failed to make war, the CTSO is preparing to make peace. The Secretary General of the Organization Nikolay Bordyuzha is setting up a peacekeeping force of 50,000 men, ready to be deployed in Syria.

On July 18th, an explosion killed the leadership of the Council of National Security, signalling the beginning of a vast offensive during which tens of thousands of mercenaries descended on the Syrian capital from Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. After several days of pitched battles, Damascus was saved when the fraction of the population hostile to the government chose out of patriotism to assist the National Army rather than bid welcome to the forces of the FSA.

On September 26, al-Qaeda jihadists were able to penetrate the interior of the Defense Ministry, disguised as Syrian soldiers and carrying false papers. They intended to detonate their explosive vests in the office of the joint chiefs of the military but did not get close enough to their target and were killed. A second team attempted to take over the national TV station to broadcast an ultimatum to the President but were not able to reach the building as access was blocked moments after the first attack. A third team targeted government headquarters and a fourth was aimed at the airport.

In both cases, NATO coordinated the operations from its Turkish base in Incirlik, seeking to provoke a schism at the core of the Syrian Arab Army and rely on certain generals for the purpose of overthrowing the regime. But the generals in question had long been identified as traitors and marginalized from effective command. In the aftermath of the two failed attacks, Syrian power was reinforced, giving it the internal legitimacy necessary to go on the offensive and crush the FSA.

These failures put a damper on those who had been crowing in advance that the days of Bashar al-Assad were numbered. In Washington, consequently, those counselling withdrawal are carrying the day. The question is no longer how much time the «Assad regime» will hold out but whether it costs the U.S. more to continue the war than to stop it. Continuing it would entail the collapse of the Jordanian economy, losing allies in Lebanon, risking civil war in Turkey, in addition to having to protect Israel from the chaos. Stopping the war would mean allowing the Russians to regain foothold in the Middle East and strengthening the Axis of Resistance to the detriment of the expansionist dreams of the Likud.

While Washington’s response takes the Israeli dimension into account, it has stopped heeding the advice of the Netanyahu government. Netanyahu ended up undercutting himself through his manipulations behind the assassination of Ambassador Chris Stevens and through his shocking interference in the American presidential campaign. If the long-term protection of Israel is the goal rather than folding to the brazen demands of Benjamin Netanyahu, a continued Russian presence is the best solution. With one million Russian-speaking Israelis, Moscow will never allow that the survival of that colony to be imperiled.

A glance backward is necessary here. The war against Syria was decided by the Bush Administration on September 15, 2001 during a meeting at Camp David, as confirmed notably by General Wesley Clark. After having suffered several setbacks, NATO action had to be cancelled due to the vetos of Russia and China. A «Plan B» then emerged, involving the use of mercenaries and covert action once deploying uniformed soldiers had become impossible. Given that the FSA has not scored a single victory against the Syrian Army, there have been multiple predictions that the conflict will become interminable and will progressively undermine the states of the region, including Israel. In this context, Washington signed onto the Geneva Accord, under the auspices of Kofi Annan.

Subsequently, the war camp torpedoed this agreement by organizing leaks to the press concerning the West’s secret involvement in the conflict, leaks that led to Kofi Annan’s immediate resignation. It also played its two trump cards with the attacks on July 18 and September 26 and lost them both. As a result, Lakhdar Brahimi, Annan’s successor, has been called on to resuscitate and implement the Geneva Accord.

In the interim, Russia did not remain idle: it obtained the creation of a Syrian Ministry of National Reconciliation; supervised and protected the meeting in Damacus of national opposition parties; organized contacts between the U.S. and Syrian general staff; and prepared the deployment of a peace force. The first two measures scarcely registered in the Western press while the last two were flatly ignored.

Nevertheless, as revealed by Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russia addressed the fears of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff concerning Syrian chemical weapons. It verified that these were stored in locations sufficiently secure not to fall into the hands of the FSA, be seized by jihadists and used by them indiscriminately. Ultimately, it gave credible guarantees to the Pentagon that the continuation in power of so determined a leader as Bashar el-Assad is a more manageable situation, for Israel as well, than allowing the chaos in Syria to spread further.

Above all, Vladimir Putin accelerated the projects of the CSTO, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the anti-NATO defense alliance that unites Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Tadjikstan and Russia itself. The foreign ministers of the CSTO adopted a shared position on Syria and a logistical plan was drawn up for an eventual deployment of 50,000 men. An agreement was signed between the CSTO and the U.N. Peacekeeping Department that these «blue chapkas» would be used in the zones of conflict under a U.N. Security Council mandate. Joint drills between the two are to take place from 8 to 17 October in Kazakhstan under the label of «Inviolable Fraternity» to complete the coordination between these two intergovernmental organizations. The Red Cross and the IOM will also participate.

No official decision will be taken in the U.S. during the presidential campaign. Once that ends, peace might become conceivable.

Was it worth it? Afghanistan 11 years later

Global Research

October 7 marked the eleventh anniversary of the US war in Afghanistan. More than 2,000 American soldiers have now been killed, and as the US presidential candidates debate each other to lead the most dominant power on Earth, perhaps it is time for someone to ask them: Was it worth it?

On September 11th 2001, 2,977 people were killed. Almost 700 people in one firm alone (Cantor-Fitzgerald) died; 343 fire fighters and paramedics were killed, as were 60 police officers. Only 291 bodies were ever found ‘intact’. Over half of the families who lost loved ones that day received not a single piece of remains. Within three months 300 fire-fighters went on leave due to respiratory problems, almost half a million New Yorkers are being treated for post-traumatic stress disorders, and 1,000 first responders have since died from acute illnesses related to clean-up activities.

Wall Street shut down for 6 days, and as a direct result of 9/11 more than 146,100 people lost their jobs. Within the first month New York City alone exceeded $105 billion in economic losses.

Was it worth it?

America then went to war. But not just Iraq and Afghanistan: Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia have also been attacked. So have the citizens of the United States: freedoms, privacy and civil rights once taken for granted are gone, in the name of ‘national security’.

Operation Iraqi Freedom officially lasted for eight years and eight months. By December 2011, 4,486 US and 318 non-US troops had been killed fighting in Iraq, more than 1,800 more than who died on September 11th. However, according to the New York Times, a year after operations ceased US Special Operations units have quietly begun re-entering Iraq at the behest of the Iraqi government.

In Afghanistan, the war that began on October 7th 2002 still marches on. Operation Enduring Freedom is not due to end until 2014, an exact century after the onset of World War One. So far Afghanistan has taken the lives of 3,196 soldiers: 2,130 American, 433 British, and 158 Canadian. Forces killed in Afghanistan also amount to more than all the lives lost on 9/11.

Thus 8,000 troops have been killed for the 2,977 lost on September 11th 2001.

Was it worth it?

It gets worse. Once soldiers return from the theatre of operations the numbers keep climbing. For every single death in Afghanistan or Iraq, twenty-five soldiers commit suicide. During the first six months of 2012 there were 187 Army suicides, 55 Air Force, 32 Marine Corps, 39 Navy and 5 Coast Guard. The cumulative effect of multiple deployments and post-traumatic stress disorders et alia suggest, however, tens of thousands of additional deaths.

Each year, 6,500 veteran suicides are documented at a rate of one every 80 minutes. Only the Army releases figures and it is unclear if this includes active duty personnel or veterans of other wars. Although only 1% of Americans have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, they account for a massive 20% of the total annual rate. The Department of Veterans Affairs claim 18 veteran suicides per day, and for every successful suicide 20 are attempted yet fail. Rates of death were far higher in both World Wars: permanent disabilities now affect veterans today who otherwise would have died on the field. In World War One, an average of 57% of all soldiers mobilised were killed; in World War Two, more than 55 million soldiers and civilians died. In other words, the wounded from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are a testimony to modern medicine saving lives that in the past would certainly have been lost, but can lead to tragic results nevertheless.

If the lowest suicide rate to assume is one per day by active duty or Iraq/Afghanistan vets, more than 4,000 must be added to the numbers killed above. And if we assume only half of the 6,500 veterans suicides per year are as a result of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, an additional 36,000 deaths could be included to the totals. Whether suicides account for a further 4,000 or 40,000 deaths, they bring the ratio to between 4:1 to 16:1 deaths in payback for the 2,977 victims of 9/11.

These are just coalition losses of course. The official number of victims in Iraq has been stuck on 100,000 since 2004, not revised upwards since. But, in 2007 the British Opinion Research Business survey calculated that up to 1.5 million Iraqis had been killed in the war. This confirmed an earlier British survey by the Lancet that calculated 655,000 to 1 million Iraqis had died in just three years, from 2003-2006. Although the war continued for a further five years the studies have not been repeated nor revised to account for additional Iraqi casualties, arguably due to intense American criticism.

There are almost no figures for Afghanistan casualties, but Human Rights Watch recorded 1,000 civilian deaths in 2006 and the UN estimates 12,000 deaths since 2007. There are no statistics for the first five years of the war.

Was it worth it?

Let us not omit the secret wars in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. Considering the drone programme is covert the numbers are almost certainly low. We do know however, that in Yemen drones have killed up to 1,026 men, women and children (at least 34) since 2002. Somalia is not on most Americans’ radar-screens but it is on the drones’: since 2007, 170 Somalis are dead from these Unmanned Aerial Vehicle strikes. In Pakistan drones have killed a reported 3,341 (at least 176 children) and wounded a minimum of 1,366 people. The ratio of wounded-to-killed indicates how deadly drone are, in part confirming their ‘precision’. They are surgically precise in that they do not wound: they intentionally tear to pieces anyone nearby.

How about the cost of capture, torture and rendition? Housing a single prisoner at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba costs the US taxpayer $800,000 per year. More than 100,000 men were detained in Iraq, many at the notorious Abu Ghraib; thousands more were held at Bagram Airfield or the infamous (CIA funded) ‘Salt Pit’ torture chamber north of Kabul, Afghanistan. Officers forced scores of detainees to physical, psychological and sexual abuse before shipping them off to even worse prisons around the world.

The non-fiscal cost of the consequences of tortures and imprisonment-without-trial cannot be calculated. For every single death or incarceration there is a father, brother, son, nephew, friend or neighbour who will never forget what these wars have wrought. Revenge lives long—generation-to-generation. We already see the first signs of what the wars have bought, exhibited in riots, uprisings, increased anti-American hostilities, destruction of US sovereign life and property, coups, and civil wars.

Was it worth it?

What about the economic cost? In 2003, George W. Bush estimated that the wars would cost $50 to $60 billion. Yet a 2011 study by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies estimated the final cost of the wars to be $4.4 trillion, not including medical costs for injured veterans or rebuilding aid to Afghanistan. Economist Joseph Stiglitz estimated the war in Iraq alone would cost $2.2 trillion. And all of the costs are funded upon borrowed money, demonstrated by the US debt skyrocketing from $6.4 trillion in March 2003 to over $16 trillion as of October 1st, 2012.

During the Vietnam war, Undersecretary of State George Ball wrote, “[I]n terms of US prestige… we would gain more through enlarging the war.” National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy opined, “[E]ven if it fails, the policy will be worth it” because of US “prestige”.

If the American public—22.5 million now actually (not officially) unemployed—understood the economic price they would have to pay, would they have agreed to so eagerly support the wars? If the US Congress could have foreseen that a bare-minimum of four times as many soldiers as those who died on 9/11would die, would it have been worth it? If the consequences of anger, revenge, blowback—and stratospheric loss of prestige—were considered, would the US have still gone to war?

Venezuela’s Victory Over Wall Street

Global Research

Venezuela looks to have effectively outmaneuvered Western designs to overthrow national sovereignty, but many challenges lay ahead.

Venezuela has provided the world with a successful model to counter the subversive methods of Wall Street and London in their bid to overthrow yet another nation-state to be rolled into their global collective. However, many have noted that President Hugo Chavez is a flawed leader, with flawed policies – many of which run contra to concepts of personal freedom and liberty.

Image: President Hugo Chavez soundly defeated US-backed opposition, despite a coordinated propaganda campaign, and millions of US State Department dollars utilized to manipulate the elections. Venezuela still faces many challenges.

While this could be said about virtually any politician, the fact is that despite President Chavez’ flaws, he has posed a substantial obstacle to Western ambitions across South America, and has consistently opposed Western machination across the world.

It has been pointed out however, that President Chavez is heading a political movement very similar to the highly criticized, Wall Street proxy, Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand – that is, using populist policies to build a reliable voting bloc to stay perpetually in power. In many aspects this is true, though Venezuela’s policies are sustainable, and a direct result of nationalizing the oil industry, while Shinawatra of Thailand simply took money out of state coffers while attempting to further privatize and sell-off to foreign multinationals, Thailand’s vast resources.

Also, political and economic policies are erroneously viewed by many as “sides” one is either on or against. In reality, the global elite see them simply as tools, and their use dictated not by personal preference or ideology, but by utility given any specific circumstance. Whether one is “good” or “bad,” when they are presented with boards that must be nailed together, they pick a hammer. Likewise, when a nation must be unified against a large, capable political opposition – political machines, populism, and socialist policies are generally used.

It is difficult to see what other effective method President Chavez could have used against the West in organizing the Venezuelan people against the collective corporate-financier interests arrayed against them and the substantial foreign subversion President Chavez has faced throughout his political career. Boards needed to be nailed together, and President Chavez elected to use a hammer. He is succeeding, and as his political structure is hammered together, taking a more distinct and stable form, it will soon be time to take out other tools to further refine it.

Ensuring A Stable, Enduring Structure

As Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez consolidates his position, it will be important to move beyond the populist policies required to win over people in the face of concerted efforts by foreign-funded opposition to win them over. In “Free Markets & Socialism: An Alternative View,” it stated:

Socialist handouts are tools. Like any tool they are only as good as the people using them. While the intentions of socialist medicine, welfare, education and so on seem noble, in reality they are primarily used by self-serving crooked politicians as bribes handed out in exchange for the voting public’s servile dependency on a particular political agenda. Generations of voting blocs have been created using socialist handouts in just this fashion. Pragmatic solutions are never seriously pursued because pragmatic, permanent solutions – while alleviating entirely any particular social problem – would undermine the real purpose of the handouts, namely, building a dependent, servile voting bloc.

However, let us imagine socialist handouts for a particular social problem such as medical care applied in the context of a temporary stop-gap measure. While people are subsidized for care, the commitments are temporary and voluntary only to prevent people from dying without proper treatment. Meanwhile, investments are put into education and biomedical technology with specific benchmarks and time frames in mind. Simultaneously, barriers such as crippling “intellectual property rights” and monopolizing business practices are eliminated to allow real competition to flourish.

By increasing the supply of trained practitioners and biomedical engineers through improved education, and advancing biomedical technology past current levels of precarious scarcity the price for medical care will drop accordingly. With monopolies eliminated, real progress can be effected. If a particular company has a viable, affordable treatment for cancer, no established monopoly will be able to lobby Washington to regulate it out of business to protect their particular racket. Similar solutions could also easily be applied to the inadequate, antiquated, parasitic oil and car industries as well.

We should look around society today and take stock in industries and commodities we take for granted. We do not kill one another over the last chicken leg or leaf of lettuce nor do many people go without basic food. This is not because we have mastered subsidizing socialist handouts to feed our populations, rather we have developed agricultural technology that allows us to create an affordable market nearly anyone can benefit from under normal circumstances.

Likewise, medical technology and other essential industries can and must be advanced to where the market price is affordable to all. This will not happen with socialist handouts or monopolizing regulations in place. It will happen with improved education and healthy competition within the markets, where the only protection given is the rights of entrepreneurs big and small to pursue their trade without being hindered by monopolistic practices. In the meantime, it is sensible to transition away from total, permanent (and pandering) socialist solutions and move toward temporary stop-gaps until this is achieved.

It should be understood that the concept of a “free market” described above does not refer to absolute economic anarchy. For instance, should Venezuela elect to pursue more permanent, technological solutions to problems currently subsidized, they would not by necessity “open their markets” to foreign multinationals and crippling “neoliberalism.” In many ways the West already observes truly “free markets,” or economic anarchy where giant corporations are free to do anything they wish, including wage massive, global wars in pursuit of their interests. The constricting laws and regulations many well-intentioned free-market advocates abhor, have been imposed by these unhindered, anarchical corporations, not by a “socialist government.” What these advocates perceive as a “socialist government” is in fact an interface created and controlled by unhindered, unregulated, unaccountable corporate-financier interests.

Image: Building things, making things, technological and scientific progress moves forward the frontier of human knowledge and makes all that follows in its wake more accessible and affordable to the average person. The next step of any genuine socialist movement aiming to meet the immediate needs of the people, is to empower the people through education and technology with the means to develop permanent technological solutions to replace what should be only temporary government-dependent subsidies. Socialism as a final end, is but another system of control.

For Venezuela, the threat of foreign subversion is still very real. There is a very real global network of subversion maintained by the corporate-financier interests of Wall Street and London, forming the foundation of modern imperialism. For President Hugo Chavez to move on to the next step, to put down the hammer and begin using more articulate tools, he would have to effectively communicate these intentions to his support base and ensure that the Venezuelan people are aware of the dangers and payoffs of pursuing the next step.

Finally, as a growing front of nations begin to rise up against Western global hegemony and the “Washington Consensus,” it is important that people around the world prevent an identical, but opposing global order to take its place. Global governance by any name, administered by any nation, or group of nations, is unnecessary and only serves to subvert national, local, and individual sovereignty. A mulipolar world where the mutual respect of national sovereignty, and the primacy of the nation-state is it’s foremost principle, is what we the people of the world should not only demand of our representatives, but should work on a daily basis locally to achieve.
