Introduction by GA: The Islamophobic  Harry’s Place are upset today. They just don’t know how to silence me and my book, even Ali Abunimah didn’t help much. With 10 new editions of The Wandering Who coming out, they have a good reason to be concerened.

I guess that my followers will enjoy reviewing the following Zionist Tantrum. I also hope that sooner or later,  Harry’s Place find the courage to debate me publicly – I guess that first they will have to learn to tell the truth. More precisely, I am still waiting for Harry Place and their AZZ friends to come up with a single quote of me referring critically to Jews as a ‘race’, ‘people’ or ‘ethnicity’.

The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics, Jewish political interest, and the role of the Harry’s Places around.

Gilad Atzmon claims that Fagin and Shylock accurately represent Jewish identity, the credit crunch was caused by the Jews, the Holocaust is a religion, and Hitler may be proved right about the Jews.

He criticises “Jewish politics”, claiming that a “Zio-Punch” causing the credit crunch, and that the Jewish lobby in Germany provoked the Nazis into fighting back, by boycotting Nazis.

At a recent jazz show, he joked” that throwing the Jews into the sea, would be unfair on the sea.

At his jazz show in Madrid, he promoted his book The Wandering Who, in which he makes many of these racist claims:

“I was a supremacist, tribalist Jew, I was living like a colonialist, I was eating their food, I was eating hummus I was eating falafel, and I managed to dismiss their sound. The people who made this hummus and falafel. And through the saxophone – it took me 30 years – I understood how wrong I was. And if you believe me, you better buy the book.”

Atzmon here combines his jazz with his antisemitism. The mainstream centre-left newspaper El Pais are happy to assist Atzmon in this, publishing two articles about him. One article states:

Given the complexitity of the artist and writer of Israeli origin, who considers himself to be an ex-Jew, you can find an idea connected with the concerts of Ian Dury’s Blockheads; an idea which Atzmon intends to share this weekend in the UK, where he usually lives.

The presentation of [Atzmon’s] new book in Valencia, published in Spain as The Wandering Identity, was accompanied in Great Britain by such a great controversy, that it seemed as if it would spoil the publication of the book. The launch will take place in the Cosecha Roja bookshop on Seville Street, as an appetizer for the second concert of the Festival of Contemporary Jazz, hosted by the Jimmy Glass Club. A similar such challenge is expected to emerge, given that it’s now the second edition [of the book].

Another piece praises Atzmon as writer and ‘jazzman’ by night:

It isn’t normal that a writer who is here to talk about his book, should end the night playing the saxophone in a jazz club. But Gilad Atzmon is like that. Musician, philosophy teacher on leave, agitator of consciences, “ex-Israeli” and “ex-Jew”, came to Madrid yesterday to present his new book, The Wandering Identity (published by Diseno) and also to sum up his condition of having been a competent jazzman for many years: “I am what I am thanks to jazz.”

El Pais accepts Atzmon’s identification of Jewish identity, with shedding the blood of others:

It is difficult to believe that the same man who is on stage at Bogui Jazz, should have been the same person who participated in some of the fiercest battles of the Lebanese War: “I saw lots of blood, many crimes, and all this made me distance myself gradually from the Jewish cause.”

The article continues, blending its reporting with Atzmon’s words:

Throughout his life, Atzmon has been denounced repeatedly for saying things that supposedly you can’t say, “however, no-one has ever been able to tell me that I have been wrong in any of my inteprerations.” In The Wandering Identity he deals with Judaism “as what it is, a profession, not a religion.”

And continues: “The political Jewish identity is the biggest risk for world peace. We see it now with Israel’s determination to go to war with Iran, which will probably degenerate into a nuclear conflict. That’s what the book is about. Palestine is not in the Middle East, it’s here in Madrid.”

In his book, Atzmon actually writes, about what would happen if Israel and Iran fought in a nuclear war:

“I guess that amongst the survivors of such a nightmare scenario, some may be bold enough to argue that ‘Hitler might have been right after all.’”

The centre-right newspaper El Mundo, at least acknowledges that Atzmon is considered an anti-Semite – but only by Jews:

Atzmon’s literary output, just as that of all those voices who refuse to take extreme positions, has always been taken as polemical. Some Jews, on one hand, accuse him of a poisonous and dangerous antisemitism, while some Palestinians do the same, calling him a double agent at the service of Israel. One chat with him, and all the possible equations become clear, pointing towards a simpler answer, deriving from common sense, and the humanity which Atzmon claims for all peoples.

However he might be, it’s clear that he has particular position and opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and that he has constructed a reasoned and well-argued critique against radical Zionism. He feels that he must raise his voice, assuming that others will denounce other extremes. However, in this new book, Atzmon makes it clear that extreme Israeli nationalism has a large portion of responsibility for the lack of peace in that part of the Middle East.

Throughout the 256 pages, Atzmon analyses and reflects in his new book on issues which he has already dealt with in past essays, making them up-to-date and compiling them into one volume: Judaism and “Jewishness”; Jewish culture and Jewish ideology; the Israeli political attitude in time and history; the role of the holocaust; the influence of Zionist pressure groups; the echo of the conflict in the media, and so on.

In the conclusion of the El Mundo piece, we read:

Today, Gilad Atzmon does not feel Jewish any more: “I’ve left behind the idea of the Chosen People”, and asks his fellow countrymen: “How can a people who have suffered so much for so long, inflict so much pain on another people?”

From there, Atzmon continues to denounce Israel as racist, and a state which practises ethnic cleansing in different forms. Neither El Pais nor El Mundo seem to have any problem whatsoever, of Atzmon speaking about Israel and the Jewish people interchangeably, criticising Jews in racist and pernicious ways.

Atzmon’s acceptance in the Spanish press, is part of a wider acceptance of his antisemitic ideas and values throughout the world. He has been praised by American “anti-Zionist” political professors Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, and by the Turkish prime minister Erdogan.

I would expect this trend to continue and grow.

Alan A adds:

Antisemitism in Spain is very high. Several surveys have shown this.

For example, El Pais notes that 52% of kids don’t want a Jew sitting next to them at school, and 58% of adults think Jews have too much power.

Anti-Syria Zionist propaganda: ”Syria and the pseudo-radical poseurs of the ‘anti-war’ left”

by Mary Rizzo

I guess they haven’t noticed that it’s the regime waging a war against the Syrian people.

On Syria, the Western ‘anti-war’ left, the Galloways, the Pilgers, the Fisks, their peers and their fans,   are once again embarrassing themselves and humanity and  again proving why there is no longer any significant grassroots working class socialist movement.  While railing – rightly – against Western governments’ infinite hypocrisy and selective support for dictatorship and tyranny as and where expedient, the posturing pseudo-radicals have forgotten about their own equally limitless hypocrisy and equally selective support for dictatorship and tyranny. They have become the exact mirror image of all they claim to despise; affluent, morally selective dinner party revolutionaries who view Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité as passé.

Universal brotherhood has been consigned to the ideological rubbish dump, with brotherhood now selective, reserved only for nominally anti-imperialist totalitarian regimes and the elites that benefit from them. Just like the Western governments they claim to oppose, the pseudo-radicals selectively align themselves with brutally oppressive totalitarian regimes whenever expedient. They are in truth not anti-war or anti-imperialism and tyranny, but only anti-Western-backed wars, imperialism and/or tyranny; Western tyranny bad, non-Western tyranny good.  Orwell had their number a long time ago.

The pseudo-radicals’ hypocrisy is also being more and more clearly exposed on Palestine; while claiming to be fervent anti-zionists and supporters of Palestinian freedom, they have had less than nothing to say about the Assad regime’s use of Israeli-made weapons to kill Palestinians in Syria, about its (ongoing) slaughter of over 500 Palestinians in the past few months, about its targeting of Palestinian camps or its attempts to blame Palestinians for the revolution, just as they’ve had nothing to say about the massacre of tens of thousands of Syrians.

There’s also their head-spinningly rapid change in attitude to the Muslim Brotherhood – which is apparently to be lauded in the form of Hamas, but is now cited alongside Al Qaeda as a hideous and terrifying threat in Syria, once again displaying their ignorance of the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as their usual woeful ignorance of the revolution itself.  Meanwhile, the pseudo-radicals’ frequent warnings of the involvement of theocratic extremists in the revolution might be slightly more plausible (despite again having little or nothing to do with the revolution) if it weren’t for their exaltation of the regime in Tehran…

Galloway, using the media he is paid by to tell off Arabs while giving lip service to their causes… a constant in his communication.

At the heart of the pseudo-radicals’ profoundly inhuman hypocrisy lies a distinctly colonial-era elitism that the officials of the British empire would have felt right at home with; there is a withering contempt from these supposed leftists for the non-Western proletariat (and not much empathy for the Western working class either), more especially when the masses under nominally ‘anti-imperialist’ tyrants dare to oppose the leadership.  Only those brutal regimes and the elites that benefit from their patronage are worthy of the pseudo-radicals’ respect, nay adulation, while the wishes of the masses are dismissed and derided, once again exposing the totalitarianism groupies’ supposed radicalism for the shameful sham it is.

Even Carlos Latuff plays the game, denying any agency to the Syrian people, and negating the autonomous nature of the revolution.

If they’re feeling particularly hospitable, these contemporary standard-bearers for leftist ‘thought’ might dismiss the masses in Syria rising up against a tyrant, who has maintained totalitarian rule through what the CIA has acknowledged as the most effective torture network in the world (its reason for selecting Syria as the preferred torture destination for War on Turr prisoners), as being tragically misguided fools taken in by Western media propaganda.  In the elitist worldview of the pseudo-radicals, members of the working class, particularly the non-Western proletariat, are a credulous and childlike homogenous peasant mass incapable of independent thought, feeling or agency.  The pseudo-radicals, as always, hold themselves to an entirely different standard, of course – they and their families should not have to live under autocratic totalitarian rule (it’s noteworthy that not one of the Tehran fan club, including its cheerleader George Galloway, has ever chosen to base themselves there, despite constantly extolling its superiority to the hideous West), but it’s jolly good for the unwashed masses, who lack their own sensitivity and need for basic freedoms.

Mixing domestic and international issues, but “Staying out of Syria” is what matters.

Of course, the pseudo-radicals haven’t entirely lost their taste for mouthing revolutionary platitudes; witness their Toytown ‘Occupy’ revolution-that-wasn’t, rightly derided by the majority in Western nations as one more extended student sit-in for the well-off, with the same old slogans and the same old incoherence: ‘’We want something or other and we want it now, or we’ll, er, camp out and hold tai chi sessions!’’   When they witness true revolutions, however, the pseudo-radicals show their true, profoundly reactionary colours, siding with those rising up against true tyranny only as and when it’s ideologically expedient to do so and otherwise siding with the oppressors.  So long as these callous elitist fakes and phoneys continue to be the loudest voice of the ‘radical’ left, it will – deservedly – continue to have little or no political influence at all.

WAKE UP AMERIKA: Majority votes to reject right wing, but Democratic Party plans move to the right 2

Dems are undeserving beneficiaries of progressive, demographic shifts

Posted by: Sammi Ibrahem,  Sr

The masses of people rejected the Romney-Ryan blatant vision of severe austerity, racism, immigrant-bashing and subservience to Wall Street.

The demographic shifts in the U.S. electorate helped deliver a Democratic Party victory. But its loyalty to Wall Street makes it incapable of satisfying the needs of its base.

This article was published in the ‘Fight to Stop the Cuts!’ Edition of Liberation.
View the complete issue.

Extremely high unemployment and increasing poverty, the economic trends that have characterized the last four years, would normally doom an incumbent president. Barack Obama was reelected to a second term, however, primarily because a majority of the population feared and rejected the program of Romney, Ryan and the extreme right. President Obama was the beneficiary of a continuing progressive shift in popular attitudes in the United States and the changing composition of the U.S. electorate.

Ninety-three percent of African American voters, 75 percent of Latinos, and 74 percent of Asian Americans supported Obama. Romney won a considerable majority of white voters—more than McCain did in 2008 and similar to Bush’s rate in 2004 over Kerry—but tens of millions of white people of all social classes also voted for Obama. Fifty-five percent of women, 60 percent of young people 18-29 years of age, and 77 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people voted for his reelection.

In a highly significant exit poll, 66 percent of the voters stated that they favored a “pathway to citizenship” for undocumented people. The majority of the electorate supported abortion rights. For the first time, a majority opinion throughout the country supported marriage equality for LGBT people, not just civil unions. Maine, Maryland and Washington state voters approved ballot measures legalizing same-sex marriage, and Minnesota voters rejected a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, the first times that statewide popular votes on marriage equality have won.

President Obama was the beneficiary of an enormous effort by organized labor, which mobilized workers around the country to knock on doors and make phone calls in support of the president. Union members voted for him by a more than 2-1 margin.

Barack Obama was reelected to a second term primarily because a majority of the population feared and rejected the program of Romney, Ryan and the extreme right.

Democratic Party: in contradiction with its base

Both the Republicans and Democrats are capitalist ruling-class parties. The president, in this case President Obama, is the CEO of the capitalist state. This state exists to serve the interests of the capitalist class and pursue their interests globally. Both parties in office serve the interests of the biggest banks, oil companies, and the military-industrial complex. They are equally imperialist.  Both the Democratic and Republican parties support endless wars, occupations, drone attacks, economic sanctions and all of the other tactics in the imperialist arsenal against the oppressed peoples and nations of the world.

The vast majority of people who voted for President Obama and the Democratic Party yesterday did not do so because they favor the rule of Wall Street. They did not do so because they support drone strikes in Pakistan or Yemen, the bombing of Libya or the occupation of Afghanistan. The victory of President Obama did not come about because of a mass embrace of the reactionary policies of his administration.

Why, then, did so many to vote for the Democrats on November 6?

It resulted from the fear and loathing by a huge part of the population for the program of the Romney camp, which is emblematic of white supremacy, racist immigrant bashing, and hostility to women’s rights, LGBT rights and unions.

That is why we can say that we are witnessing a progressive shift in the attitudes of the population and in the composition of the country. This is so even though the Democratic Party remains completely imperialist and determined to carry out Wall Street’s right-wing program that will lead to the further decline in living conditions. Despite the momentary popular celebrations for the Democratic victory, this contradiction between the aspirations of the people and the program of the Democratic Party must and will break out into the open.

What is likely to come next?

Having won reelection, President Obama and the Democratic Party will seek in the coming months to come to an agreement with the Republicans and extreme right to carry out the basic agenda of the banks and corporations, which is to slash vital social programs, including Social Security and Medicare, and transfer the economic burden of the current crisis onto the backs of the working class and the poor.

Despite labor’s central role in the reelection effort, many state governments, including some headed by Democratic Party governors, are planning to restrict union rights while carrying out mass layoffs of public sector workers.

The imperialist establishment was waiting until the election was over before intensifying its war for “regime change” in Syria. President Obama, knowing that the country is “war weary” and opposes new intervention, went out of his way to avoid the issue prior to the election, as did Romney. But in a carefully coordinated plan with British imperialism – announced the morning after Election Day– the NATO powers are now taking steps to escalate their own direct intervention to overthrow the Syrian government.

Major struggles are on the horizon: Opposing stepped up intervention in Syria and threats of war against other countries; fighting the widespread and lethal budget cuts that are coming on the federal, state and local levels; resisting the epidemic of racist police brutality and mass incarceration, issues never mentioned by either Romney or Obama in the campaign; defending women’s rights, which are still under attack nationwide; continuing the struggle for full rights for immigrants and full equality for LGBT people who are still face widespread bigotry and violence. And much more.

The key element in real progress is not the ballot box, but the mass movements of the people – in the streets, workplaces, communities and campuses. The Party for Socialism and Liberation is dedicated to building that movement.

State accepting bids for construction of new homes beyond Green Line; leftist groups blast move

The Israel Land Administration announced late Monday that it was accepting bids from contractors to build 1,213 new housing units in east and north Jerusalem.

Leftists groups have denounced what they call new plans for construction beyond the Green Line, while the Housing Ministry insists that the government decided on the units in October 2011, and that the tenders were delayed by a bureaucratic process.

The five tenders that were announced Monday apply to construction in the Ramot and Pisgat Zeev neighborhoods.

The Ir Amim Organization, which promotes Israeli-Palestinian coexistence in Jerusalem and opposes construction in the capital’s east, said that the announcement brings the total number of housing units that were put up for bid in east Jerusalem this year to 2,386 – the highest number in a decade.

Yehudit Oppenheimer, the executive director of Ir Amim, blasted the move.

“While the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is making unprecedented declarations that reflect his commitment to the peace process,” she lamented, “we continue to build beyond the Green Line, even though it defies the international community and isn’t within the public’s interest.”

‘PM turned his back on peace’
She further asserted that “The new tenders indicate that (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s government has turned its back on the peace process.”

Oppenheimer said that no matter which president is elected in the US, continued construction beyond the Green Line will deepen the rift between Jerusalem and Washington, “and the entire Israeli public will lose out.”

The Housing Ministry said in response that the government had decided on the tenders in October 2011, after the Palestinian Authority applied for UNESCO membership.

According to the ministry, the details of the housing tenders have been worked out over the past year, and were finally posted on the Land Authority’s website on Monday.

“These tenders aren’t new, and the political organizations have dealt with them in the past,” the ministry said, noting that the Ramot lot is located directly on the 1967 border, in an area that never belonged to Jordan.

Mittpocalypse: Rmoney

by mantiqaltayr

It’s voting machine day.  But I digress.

Mitt has lots of money, hell it’s actually part of his name Romney, which is kinda cool, well sort of.  Soon he’ll  have even more, you’ll have even less, but he’ll have more and that’s what counts.

The quote above is of an interpretation, not a direct quote. Rmoney is doing pretty well though. Once he gets the job, imagine how much more he can make while he destroys what’s left of the social safety net.

This NYT article has some interesting information for you to think about as you go to the voting booth and possibly vote using a machine that Rmoneyowns.

Note to Shas Party members, red highlighting is mine.

“Many of the details of the Romneys’ wealth — estimated at $250 million — remain hidden, partly because Mr. Romney has released only the last two years of his tax returns. Those returns show an effective tax rate of about 14 percent, because most of the earnings came from investments and are taxed at 15 percent, significantly lower than rates on ordinary income.”

I like this quote:

“The sophisticated tax strategies of Bain and other private equity firms begin with the basic architecture of their funds. Though headquartered in Boston, Bain and its credit affiliate, Sankaty Advisors, have set up at least 137 entities in the Caymans, using local lawyers and others who provide an islands address for paperwork purposes.”

As he guts social security and medicare, you can sleep well at night knowing that Rmoney’s personal retirement account is valued at a cool 21 MILLION dollars.  Oh, I’m sorry that was a mistake. My bad. The LOWEST estimate is 21 million dollars, it might be as high as 102 million dollars.

“Individual retirement accounts, as tax-exempt entities, are subject to the “unrelated business income” tax. But people familiar with Mr. Romney’s investments said his I.R.A., which is managed by an independent trustee and is estimated to be worth between $21 million and $102 million, used offshore blockers to avoid the tax. ”

Sabato’s “Crystal Ball” Calls Election for Obama

by mantiqaltayr

Larry Sabato at the University of Virginia Center for Politics has called the election in favor of Obama. He’s projecting Obama will get 290 electoral votes. Let’s hope  he’s right.  Just in case, go vote.  Then as soon as you get home, start organizing.

Rasmussen will be releasing their latest results later Tuesday morning. As of November 5th they Romney leading by %49 to %48 percent of the popular vote. On the electoral vote side of things, Rasmussen says Obama has 237 to 206 for Romney with 95 votes listed as a toss up.

Monmouth has it dead even as of November 5.

The Jerusalem Washington New York Times Post has Obama ahead by %3 in the popular vote.

Gallup has Romney ahead %49 to %48.

We may not know the winner for days and it’ll be interesting to see what happens to votes in states clobbered by Sandy who still have lots of residents without power.

On the other hand, if Romney somehow “wins” outright, the above data would strike me as even more interesting than it already is.
