Britain will double support for the Syrian opposition in 2014 with shipping more non-lethal military aid, PM David Cameron said as he and President Obama agreed to pressure on Assad while meeting in Washington.

Cameron has vowed an extra £10 million for non-lethal equipment and £30 million more for humanitarian assistance for Syrian people as the two politicians outlined further steps to “bring to an end the killing” of Syrian people.

“We will double non-lethal support to the Syrian opposition in the coming year. Armored vehicles, body armor and power generators are about to be shipped,” Cameron said at the press conference after an Oval Office meeting with US president Barack Obama.

Britain’s actions in Syria completely coincide with the US plans that the Obama administration voiced last week. Speaking after a meeting of the Syrian opposition, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would double its non-lethal aid to opposition forces in Syria in the coming year bringing the total sum to $250 million.

As for arming the Syrian opposition, Britain claims it has not “made decision to arm opposition groups in Syria”, however, Cameron said that it “is pushing for more flexibility in the EU arms embargo”.

“What we have done is we have amended the EU arms embargo in order that we can give technical assistance and technical advice,” he said.

He also said that UK will continue to examine the embargo to “see if we need to make further changes”.

The current sanctions recently amended in April allow the supply of certain non-lethal equipment as well as technical and financing assistance related to it. However, a recently leaked six-page long draft proposal revealed the UK proposed two options to EU diplomats to amend the current embargo: the first, full exemption of Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary forces from the arms embargo and the second, to remove ‘non-lethal’ language to allow shipment lethal equipment to Syria.

Cameron said Assad had to realize there could be no military victory for his forces.

President Obama has backed Cameron’s words. From his side, he said that the “work to establish the use of chemical weapon in Syria” will continue and the findings “will help guide” the next steps.

Obama said the US would be “very persistent” in pursuing a peaceful political transition that leads to Assad’s exit but leaves Syria “intact”.

“I’m not promising it is going to be successful. Frankly, sometimes once the furies have been unleashed in a situation like we are seeing in Syria, it’s very hard to put things back together,” Obama said.

Both Cameron and Obama welcomed “successful” talks the Prime Minister had with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, at which the two leaders sought to hammer out a common approach to ending Syrian conflict.

“There is now common ground between the US, UK, Russia and many others that whatever our differences we have the same aim, a stable, inclusive and peaceful Syria free from the scourge of extremists,” Cameron said.

The plan to organize an international conference to bring the sides of the Syrian conflict to the negotiating table was announced last week by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Syria has recently become an issue of heated debate between Western powers after the UK Ministry of Defense claimed the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian troops after allegedly analyzing soil smuggled out of the country in a secret British operation.

The UN followed up alarming claim of ‘evidence’ and conducted its separate investigation. Though no“conclusive findings” were reached, the UN’s independent inquiry revealed after interviewing “victims, doctors and field hospitals in neighboring countries” that there is “strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof” that the rebels not the government forces used sarin gas.

However, despite the conclusions of the UN, Washington said it remained “highly skeptical” about the use of chemical weapons by the opposition fighters, Britain also claimed there was no evidence of that. Along with France, it has been pushing other EU members to ease the bloc’s ban on weapon supplies to the Syrian rebels.

U.S./IsraHell Hands Off Syria!

NOVANEWS

A Statement by the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC)

The May 2-3 and 4-5 nighttime bombings of Syria’s International Airport, military installations in a Damascus suburb and a military supply depot reportedly killed 300 people. The bombings were initially denied but then confirmed by Israel and soon after given the stamp of approval by the Obama Administration.
The previous week President Obama and Secretary of Defense Charles Hagel threatened to escalate U.S. intervention in Syria based on the unsubstantiated charge that Syria had employed weapons of mass destruction, in this case the deadly sarin gas.
What is incontrovertible is that U.S. allies in the region – Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia – have supplied hundreds of millions of dollars in lethal military aid to destabilize the Syrian regime. The U.S. itself claims to have supplied some $400 million in “non-lethal aid.”  The U.S., which funds Israel’s multi-billion dollar “Iron Dome” missile program, is the chief military force in the region.
No serious observers believe that Israel, the largest recipient of U.S. aid in the world, to the tune of $4 billion annually, acts without U.S. approval – the same is undeniable with regard to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. NATO ally, Turkey.
In the case of Qatar, a nation without an army, the U.S.-established and privatized Blackwater military installation is used daily as an operational base for the U.S. war in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere.
The U.S. Machiavellian strategy in Syria is first and foremost to advance its economic, military and regional “interests.” The latter includes deepening the isolation of Iran, whose oil wealth the U.S. corporate elite seeks to regain.
We recognize no rights among imperial nations to determine the future of any oppressed nation on earth, not to mention the modern day neo-colonial interveners. With regard to Syria, that right belongs to the Syrian people only.
The U.S. government is presently restrained by the mass antiwar sentiment expressed in repeated polls over the past two years. The most recent Pew Research poll indicates that 62 percent are opposed to any U.S. intervention in Syria. We must add to this the fact the U.S. bloody wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the decades long U.S. support to the Egyptian Mubarak dictatorship as well as the constant drone attacks on Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia have earned it the deep hatred of the peoples of the Middle East and beyond.
The Iraq “weapons of mass destruction” justification for this still-raging war, that has taken the lives of 1.5 million Iraqis so far, and the ongoing war in Afghanistan, wherein the U.S. puppet Hamid Karzai regime is discredited around the world, has convinced social justice activists everywhere that the U.S. imperial rulers fight for oil and military-geographic advantage and not for peace and justice.
More than ever the U.S. and the worldwide antiwar and social justice movement must demand:
  • U.S./Israel Hands Off Syria!
  • Bring All U.S. Troops and Mercenaries Home Now!
  • Self-determination for the Syrian People!
  • No to U.S. Sanctions Anywhere!
  • End All U.S. Aid to Israel!
  • U.S. Out of the Middle East Now!

Egypt parliament condemns Zio-Nazi attack on Syria

NOVANEWS

On May 5, the Syrian state television reported that Israel had attacked the Jamraya research center, located northwest of the capital, Damascus. The center had been targeted by another Israeli airstrike back in January.

Egyptian members of parliament have strongly condemned the recent Israeli airstrike against Syria, calling on Egypt’s president to intervene immediately to help bring an end to Tel Aviv’s aggression, Press TVreports.

Members of Egypt’s Shura Council said the aggression is in line with Israel’s continued efforts aimed at destabilizing the Middle East.

“The regional role of the post-revolution Egypt is different. All the state bodies, the president, parliament and the people are concerned about the sovereignty of all the neighbors, including Syria and Palestine, and it is evident in this period that Israel is exerting efforts to destabilize the region,” said Egyptian lawmaker, Mohamed Abdulrahman.

On May 5, the Syrian state television reported that Israel had attacked the Jamraya Research Center, located northwest of the capital, Damascus. The center had been targeted by another Israeli airstrike back in January.

The Israeli aggression came amid the ongoing crisis in Syria which according to the Syrian government is being orchestrated from outside the country and by a very large number of foreign-backed militants.

Later on the day, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi also condemned the attack, calling on the international community to help protect international laws and respect the sovereignty of Syria.

“All the Arab states must take a firmer stance toward Israel and its aggression against Syria and Palestine. We called on the president and foreign minister to take prompt action against this blatant aggression,” said Egyptian legislator, Ahmed Yousef.

Last Friday, Egyptians staged a demonstration against the Israeli air raids and its violation of Palestinians’ rights.

Different factions in Egypt have expressed their strong condemnation of the Israeli airstrikes and have called on the international community to take prompt action against Israel’s efforts to destabilize the region.

According to Israeli Walla website, the Israeli army is preparing to launch Operation Pillar of Defense II against the Gaza Strip in a bid to eliminate Hamas resistance movement.

Israeli tanks and bulldozers have carried out an incursion into northeastern areas of the Gaza Strip, local sources say.

A number of Israeli tanks and bulldozers infiltrated into Palestinian-owned lands in the town of Beit Hanoun on Monday.

The Israeli forces also entered Beit Hanoun last week, razing Palestinian farmlands and forcing the farmers to leave the area.

Israel has carried out a number of incursions into Gaza in the past weeks, including three airstrikes on the southern town of Khan Younis and near the town of Rafah in southern Gaza in late April.

The attacks are in violation of a ceasefire which brought an end to Israel’s eight-day war against Palestinians last November.

According to Israeli Walla website, the Israeli army is preparing to launch Operation Pillar of Defense II against the Gaza Strip in a bid to eliminate Hamas resistance movement.

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine has also warned against an imminent Israeli attack against the besieged coastal enclave.

The group’s military wing, Al-Quds Brigades, has been holding military exercises in order to prepare its members for a possible Israeli aggression, the movement said.

Israel launched the so-called Operation Pillar of Defense I against Gaza in November 2012. Over 160 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 1,200 others were injured and more than 1,500 targets were hit across the Palestinian enclave during the eight-day war.

In retaliation, Palestinian resistance fighters fired rockets and missiles into Israeli cities, killing at least five Israelis. The offensive ended after Egypt brokered a truce between Hamas and Israel.

According to a Hamas spokesman, Israel’s eight-day aggression against the Gaza Strip caused more than USD 1.2 billion in direct and indirect damages.

Syrian Army Destroys Terrorist Command Center in Reef Damascus

NOVANEWS

The Syrian army continued its clean-up and military operations in Reef (outskirts of) Damascus destroying a terrorist command center and killing tens of armed rebels.

The army targeted and destroyed a command headquarters of the al-Nusra terrorists in al-Rayhana region located between Yabrud and al-Nabak in Reef Damascus killing tens of terrorists and injuring many others.

The Syrian army also destroyed an arms and ammunition depot of the terrorists in al-Rayhana region.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

The US and its western and regional allies have long sought to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his ruling system. Media reports said that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling Assad’s government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.

Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said in May that the flow of weapons – most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past – has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.

FSA Founder Robert Ford Shows Support for Al Qaeda/Al Nusra Terrorists on Syrian Border

NOVANEWS

U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford met with a Syrian rebel chief at a border crossing with Turkey this week, a rebel commander told AFP on Friday.

U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford met with a Syrian rebel chief at a border crossing with Turkey this week.

U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford met with a Syrian rebel chief at a border crossing with Turkey this week.

“There was a visit by Robert Ford to the border crossing at Bab al-Salameh,” said Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Okaidi, who heads the mainstream rebel Free Syrian Army’s fighters in Aleppo, northern Syria.

“U.S. food and medical assistance was being delivered. He was accompanying the aid shipment,” he added.

Ford was recalled from Damascus in October 2011, over concerns for his safety after he visited protesters in the central city of Hama early in the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Okaidi, who along with other rebel leaders has criticized Washington’s reluctance to arm the rebels, said the supply of weapons was discussed during the 40-minute meeting.

“There were promises that in future there will be better assistance than this, and that there might be military assistance,” he said.

“The issue is being studied. (The visit) may bring positive results.”

The United States has repeatedly expressed its support for the anti-Assad uprising but it has been unwilling to provide arms, in part for fear that they may end up in the hands of extremists.

Okaidi said Ford’s visit could be a sign that “the United States has started to move in the direction of arming the Syrian rebels.

Ford appeared in a new video posted online on Friday, offering his condolences in Arabic to the Syrian people for “the massacres that the Syrian regime has carried out”.

“We understand that humanitarian assistance is insufficient. At the same time, substantive assistance is being given to the Free Syrian Army in its fight against the regime,” he said.

In the same video, he echoed U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s announcements that a transitional government in Syria should be set up, and that Assad should step dow.

“Let me be very clear. The U.S. position has not changed. Approximately two years ago, we announced that Bashar al-Assad had lost his legitimacy, and that he had to resign,” he said.

“We still say that Bashar al-Assad must resign, he must resign. And the Syrians must create a new transitional government that excludes him and his inner circle,” he added.
