The US Culture: Scared Americans and “The US Terror State”

Daniel Patrick Welch

TERROR 1 ang3

Syria, Libya and other US crimes invisible to financially scared Americans.

Watch Out, World! Even America’s Wealthy Are Losing Ground.

Cognitive dissonance among the US sub-elite means more war and death for everyone else.

Occasionally the tip of the iceberg pokes through, and the reported facts corroborate the experience of most of the people. The recent Pew Center report that has now reached broad circulation shows that a full 93% of US households *lost* ground in the much vaunted recovery of 2009-2011.

This just validates what we are all living through, glossed over by averages, smoke and mirrors. There is no “recovery.” Sectors *within* the top quintile are holding on, barely.

This is the starkest portrayal I’ve seen in black and white; I had previously been telling anyone who would listen that, while there seems to be a pickup for those in the $250,000 and up range, it is clearly not the case for the bottom 4 quintiles [i.e. $100,000 combined household income 2010].

TERROR 3 undercorporations (1)

It should be shocking enough to most middle class types that the real picture is so different from what they believe to be living–that is, that they are actually in the top 8-10%… BUT the data shows even worse. Even families up to $500,000 (!) are losing ground.

This bespeaks the desperation in the political outlook of what Zinn called The Guards and what Chomsky called The Priesthood: people who are doing just fine in the current system but think it needs a few tweaks.

As this sector shrinks, the internal contradictions will become more apparent and the response of the state becomes harsher and less elastic. So households with “two good jobs” say $100,000 plus each, are prone to seeing some hope, the famous ‘green shoots’ mantra that fell on deaf ears for most of us a few years ago. Come on, guys–it *can* work! We all need to just be a bit more patient! Etc.

The political ramifications are quite alarming. This sector is crucial to the viability and perceived legitimacy of the system, and their panic has far reaching consequences. It may just beginning to dawn on them that they, too, will ultimately be left behind in the wealth shift, and that it was never really about them.

Slowly but surely, and to varying degrees, they are recapitulating Judas’ epiphany [the Andrew Lloyd Weber version, at least]: “My god I’m sick. I’ve been used–and you knew all the time!” They are just beginning to see that they are facing an uphill battle in a rigged game against the House with a stacked deck–and any other cheesy analogies you want to cram in there–but there is nowhere for them to go.

TERROR 4 da674_ORIG-xwhat_is_your_state_the_worst_at_the_united_states_of_shame.jpg.pagespeed.ic.9qwEiL7pqL

Paradoxically, the initial wave of reaction to this newfound betrayal by their patrons in the ruling class is not to turn on their masters. It is to express this anger at those below, in the age-old game of shooting the messenger.

Consequently, they become even better “shushers,” the Seinfeld term for viewers who keep order in a theater. Border collies, gatekeepers… they have always been there, but they were more consciously part of the professional ‘left,’ an icon of the political class.

In the current period, their anger is more desperate and more diffuse: They have always been more inclined, for example, to trust the police, to believe the official version of events, to avoid sources of information considered by their class position and experience to be beyond the Pale.

Having rarely, if ever, been on the wrong side of Officialdom, or had to bail relatives out of jail, or had any race-tinged experiences themselves, they are primed and pampered to be the intellectual shock troops of Acceptable Discourse.

In the face of increased perfidy on the part of their class betters, they can’t (yet) bring themselves to bite what they still perceive as the hand that feeds them. Consequently, they will lash out at the incongruously labeled ‘parasites’ who they feel are ruining their banquet, even as the din of cognitive dissonance grows inside their heads.

TERROR 5 fearmongering_mcain (1)

The brutal fallout from this game is apparent all around us, as the body counts rise and the single minded state terrorism of the state apparatus grows ever more horrific in its attempt to maintain their bloated lifestyles through hegemony over the world’s resources.

This transaction is completely lost on the Shushers–rather, they become its ghoulish cheerleaders, with or without acknowledgement. They are capable, somehow, of rationalizing the complete destruction of country after country–even as they are shown they are being lied into doing so.

It is inconsequential to them that their government is funding, arming and training the very Islamic terrorists in Syria and Libya that they are primed to fear elsewhere. The simple mathematical rule of balance and scale demands that they acknowledge and reject the 1000 : 1 ratio of violence ravaging the world in their name, with their money, with their silence at best and enthusiastic endorsement at worst.

They just don’t give a shit, and their macabre privileging of the relatively few victims among their own–as awful as these surely are–is lost outside the bubble, where the rest of the world grieves for their victims.

The economic consequences of their loss of station “scares the sh..t” out of them: while logic and basic morality dictate that they should wake up every morning with the bloody carnage of their own drone army foremost in their minds, they are instead preoccupied with how they can no longer afford an annual pilgrimage to Disney, or that they may have to postpone the kitchen/bath/boat/car upgrade they have been contemplating.

If this makes them sound like monsters, it should. There is something epic about the horror of simultaneously having no power over a political system that wreaks such destruction and yet defending that very system as acceptable and benign, without at the very least having been the proverbial canary in the coal mine, the littlest Who shouting ‘We are here!’ from the tallest available tower.

patriotism and propaganda

It is more than a sham and a shame.

It is a moral crime, a breach of ethical duty that will yield unimaginable consequences when the balance is eventually righted.

And yes, for international readers, I do realize the self-absorption of focusing on the internal American experience, and hear your cries of “Who gives a shit!’ inside my head.”

If you have stuck with me this long, much respect. Sometimes I feel it necessary to speak to and about my American countrymen from the perspective of one who shares, albeit sometimes tangentially, their experience.

I believe we are living in the time of tremendous turmoil. It may take a year or two or ten, but in historical terms we are living in that instant, that one day where, looking back, it will become apparent that everything changed.

It is the pivotal moment so brilliantly enacted by the montage at the end of Les Miserables where all social actors, no matter their role or position, sense that something momentous is on the horizon: “Tomorrow we’ll discover what our God in heaven has in store. One more dawn. One more day. One day more!”

Youth arrested for asking if shooting at Women of the Wall is ‘kosher’

Young Israeli settlers play with army guns 14 Apri

Yeshiva student made the inquiry on a website; Women of the Wall intend to read from Torah at next service

ed note–the entire debate concerning Jewish women being permitted to ‘pray’ at the Western Wall revolves around Torah Judaism’s assertion that women are to be excluded from religious activities, and it is further made clear in Torah Judaism that those who disobey the ‘commandments of Moses’ are to be put to death.

Therefore, what we are to conclude from this is that asking such a question within the context of discussing Judaism and what it permits is NOT an aberration. Likewise, with all the things that are seen and heard now, such as Rabbi Shapira’s Book ‘The King’s Torah’ where it is outlined how Jews are permitted to kill gentiles–THIS IS THE NATURE OF JUDAISM, TO KILL THOSE WHO DISAGREE OR RUN AFOUL OF IT.

The Yeshiva student asking such a question was doing exactly as his religion teaches and is therefore a ‘good Jew’.

Times of Israel

A youth from the West Bank was arrested after he inquired on a website whether shooting members of the Women of the Wall while they wear the tallit, or prayer shawl, is permissible according to Jewish law.

Reshet Bet reports that the 17-year-old, who studies at a yeshiva in Jerusalem, was told that violence is absolutely forbidden. The student claims that he never intended to actually harm any members of the organization.

The Women of the Wall, who gather monthly to celebrate Rosh Hodesh (the new moon) in the women’s section of the Western Wall plaza, pray with tefillin (phylacteries), tallit and Torah scrolls, religious items traditionally used only by men. The group says its actions are not in contravention of the halacha (Jewish law).

The organization said it will read from a Torah scroll at its upcoming service Sunday at the Western Wall.

Meanwhile, several leading ultra-Orthodox rabbis called on their followers to gather Sunday for a mass prayer opposite the group’s service, which is due to include an admonition against violence.

On Wednesday, Women of the Wall director Lesley Sachs told JTA that her group had acquiesced to a request from Religious Services Minister Naftali Bennett to refrain from reading from a Torah scroll in May at its monthly women’s Rosh Chodesh service at the wall.

“We could have done it last month, but Bennett asked us to make certain compromises and we agreed for one month to show our goodwill,” Sachs said. “There was no question we would bring it this month. Without it, it’s not a full service.”

Bennett met with Women of the Wall representatives on Wednesday in what Sachs called a “very productive meeting,” but she added there was “nothing new.”

Women of the Wall members have been arrested for wearing prayer shawls over a law forbidding the practice that falls outside the wall’s “local custom.”

In April, however, a judge determined that the group’s activities — including reading from a Torah scroll — did not contravene the law.

The absence of a Torah scroll last month did little to prevent unrest during the Women of the Wall’s service, as thousands of haredi young women packed the Western Wall Plaza during the service, and several dozen haredi men protested, with some throwing coffee, water and a chair in protest.

The call for thousands of men to mass for this month’s service, according to haredi news site Kikar Hashabbat, included the admonition against violence.

“It will be a show of sanctification of God’s name,” said Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Yossi Deutsch, who is haredi. “Many will come, according to the instruction of great rabbis, to sanctify the name of heaven and prove that we will not surrender in the battle over the holiness of the Western Wall.”

Sachs said she does not think reading from a Torah scroll should incite haredi protest.

“We’re not there to provoke,” she said. “We just want to do the new month’s service, which does include the Torah scroll.”

Hackers Access Email Accounts of PM Erdogan’s Staff

Turkish government networks were hacked on Wednesday, compromising the private information of staffers in PM Tayyip Erdogan’s office, a source in PM’s office confirmed to Reuters. The attack was in support of the ongoing anti-government protests.

Staff email accounts were reportedly accessed after a phishing attack, and those affected were cut off from the network, a source said.

Anonymous wrote in a press release that the group will only leak the passwords of email accounts containing no classified information, and will not release any phone numbers obtained.

Earlier, the hacktivist group Anonymous has taken down the Turkish President’s website, along with that of the country’s ruling party, as operation #OpTurkey kicked off in support of the anti-government protests.

As of 22:40 GMT, the website of President Abdullah Gul has been offline, together with the website of the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the websites for the Istanbul Directorate of Security and the Istanbul Governor’s Office.

The hacktivists earlier targeted municipal governments in Mersin and Izmir.

The operation was kicked off in response to the police crackdown of protests which have taken the country by storm. The Gebze Institute of Technology has also come under digital fire.

Zimbabwe: The Revolution Continues

Global Research

The coming elections in Zimbabwe are no mere referendum on the leadership of the coalition government. Instead, the decision before Zimbabweans is a clear one: continue on the revolutionary path of Mugabe and ZANU-PF or follow Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC-T and their pro-US, neoliberal economic agenda.

While much of Africa has been turned into a chaotic, war-ravaged continent stuck in the destructive cycles of violence, terrorism, and dependence on imperial powers, Zimbabwe has managed to maintain the fierce independence and commitment to revolution espoused by President Mugabe stretching all the way back to the post-colonial liberation struggle. However, in order to fully understand the sustained campaign of destabilization and subversion by the Western imperialist ruling class, one must first examine the policies of Mugabe and ZANU-PF that have earned them the ire of Washington and London.

Mugabe’s “Crimes”

Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party emerged from the post-independence conflict as the dominant political party in Zimbabwe, promising to finally address the most pressing issues facing black Zimbabweans who, despite making up the vast majority of the population, continued to be mostly landless, while the white, landowning class maintained their grip on the most arable land. This gross disparity in land ownership, a vestige of the colonial system, became one of the primary needs that the new leadership intended to address. However, the terms of the negotiated settlement of the war of liberation in 1979, known as theLancaster House Agreement, essentially allowed the white farmers to retain their land if they chose to do so under the “willing buyer, willing seller” principle.

This system continued until 2000 when President Mugabe shifted the policy to a “fast track” land program that sought to unseat white privilege and restore ethnic balance to land ownership. It was precisely this policy shift that earned Mugabe the ire of the imperial powers, particularly the British, which then sought to punish Mugabe and the people of Zimbabwe by instituting crippling sanctions that destroyed the Zimbabwean economy. However, this only strengthened the resolve of ZANU-PF, teaching them a number of important lessons. As Francis Chitsike of Midlands State University in Zimbabwe points out:

What the Zimbabwean government learnt from its own experience is that in an agriculturally based economy, no development program will succeed if people are not given access to land. Equitable access to means of production is vital to the success of any development program. There is a direct link between poverty reduction and land reform, and issues of poverty reduction cannot be tackled without addressing issues of land reform.[i]

After twenty years of playing by the rules set forth by the British, Mugabe and ZANU-PF realized that in order to achieve the true goals of the revolution (poverty reduction, land redistribution, expanded social services, etc.), they would have to reinvent the country, not simply reform it gradually. And so, ZANU-PF adopted as its slogan “Land is the economy and the economy is land” in order to underscore the government’s commitment to true land redistribution. The results of the fast track land program are impossible to ignore. In a new book entitled Zimbabwe Takes Back Its Land, the authors explain how:

In the biggest land reform in Africa, 6,000 white farmers have been replaced by 245,000 Zimbabwean farmers. These are primarily ordinary poor people who have become more productive farmers. The change was inevitably disruptive at first, but production is increasing rapidly. Agricultural production is now returning to the 1990s level, and resettled farmers already grow 40% of the country’s tobacco and 49% of its maize.[ii]

This incredible accomplishment of land redistribution has far-reaching implications for the people of Zimbabwe. Not only are they finally able to enjoy the fruits of their revolution, but they have charted a course of self-sufficiency that allows the country and its elected officials to be less dependent on foreign powers, giving them a greater degree of autonomy in political and economic matters. However, the significance of the land redistribution goes much further than simply its impact on the people of Zimbabwe. The successful redistribution of land provides a “dangerous” model for other African nations still struggling with the legacy of colonial rule.

Although land remains at the center of the continued revolution, there are other key economic issues which Mugabe and ZANU-PF have addressed in ways that are antithetical to the exploitative goals of Western corporations and their government servants. Perhaps one of the most shocking to financiers and capitalists in the West was the decision to nationalize the mining sector, as the government took majority stakes in most mining companies operating in the country. Naturally, this was yet another slap in the face to corporate interests that saw in Zimbabwe yet another African cash cow to be milked dry. The imperialist mentality in Africa views the resources as belonging to white Europeans and Americans rather than the people of Africa. This fundamental divide is what distinguishes Mugabe and ZANU-PF from many other leaders in Africa who, at every turn, grovel at the feet of their former oppressors.

Perhaps the central principle in Mugabe and ZANU-PF’s economic program is “indigenisation”. This process of reclaiming the economic destiny of the country for the people of Zimbabwe has been difficult, even problematic at times, but has been successful. Not only has the government moved to nationalize the mining sector, it has expanded the program to include banks and other important businesses.

Although this process has been mocked by so-called “experts” in the West, the reality is that the program has been a resounding success, not only economically, but also with the people. As Saviour Kasukewere, Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment noted in 2011:

This is an imperative we cannot avoid…they [foreign corporations] have been having it too good for too long…if they think by closing a mine they are affecting us, tough luck. Closing a mine doesn’t change anything…Brazil is coming, India is coming…what we have a problem with, is companies with a colonial ownership structure.”[iii]

Kasukewere here articulates perhaps the most important point of all: that the revolution in Zimbabwe is not merely cosmetic, but rather is a decades-long process of unwinding the structures of colonial control – the very imperialist infrastructure which to this day forms the foundation of white capitalist domination of Africa.

Unlike nearly every other African country, Zimbabwe does not play host to US military bases or any AFRICOM presence. No military “advisors” have entrenched themselves in the armed forces as they have throughout the continent. There is no US drone base as in Niger, Djibouti and elsewhere. Zimbabwe has maintained a steady, if somewhat fragile, peace since independence, choosing to maintain support for independent African nations such as Libya while it was free under the leadership of Muammar Qaddafi, and Eritrea which, like Zimbabwe, is vilified by Western imperialists for its unwillingness to be made part of the imperial system. Essentially then, Zimbabwe has in nearly every way asserted its independence from the US-UK sphere.

Naturally though, the imperial powers do not sit idly by and allow this to happen. They have their counter-revolution in Zimbabwe, led and embodied by Morgan Tsvangirai and the MDC-T.

Tsvangirai, the MDC-T, and the Subversion of Zimbabwe

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) led by current Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is no mere opposition party. Rather, they are the Zimbabwean face of neoliberal capitalism and continued subservience to corporate-imperial power. Although Tsvangirai’s party shrouds itself in the flag of anti-corruption and “sustainable development”, the truth is that these are merely the rhetorical cover for rolling back the gains made by the people of Zimbabwe under the leadership of Mugabe and ZANU-PF.

Despite the obvious need, and overwhelming support, for the land redistribution programs of the last decade, Tsvangirai and his Western puppet party came out against the program and squarely on the side of the entrenched white landowners. In 2011, as the land redistribution and indigenization programs were beginning to take root, Tsvangirai stated publicly that, “We don’t support grabbing property and seizing companies. We support a process of willing seller, willing buyer.” This revealing statement illustrates clearly the degree to which Tsvangirai and MDC-T represent the interests of the British and the imperial-corporate powers who themselves created the “willing seller, willing buyer” concept in the Lancaster House Agreement. Essentially then, when Tsvangirai speaks it is the voice of London, Washington and Wall St.

However, this ideological connection is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Tsvangirai and his relations with the West. A 2010 leaked cable, published by WikiLeaks[iv], revealed that Tsvangirai collaborated with President Obama and the US establishment against the interests of Zimbabwe and the people. The document[v] “showed that he [Tsvangirai] had had been privately urging Washington to maintain sanctions against Harare, while taking the opposite position in public.” This revelation, though certainly not a surprise to many in Zimbabwe and ZANU-PF, reveals the degree to which Tsvangirai and the MDC-T is, for all intents and purposes, a US front group masquerading as political opposition. Of course, were this the only example of the relationship, the case against Tsvangirai would be incomplete. Rather, one must examine the role of US intelligence in shaping the entire agenda of the MDC-T.

Earlier this month, the Zimbabwe Herald reported that:

MDC-T has reportedly invited three Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents to attend its policy conference set for [Friday May 17, 2013] as part of last ditch efforts to formulate an appealing election manifesto…the Herald is reliably informed that the three CIA agents were also behind MDC-T’s security policy document titled ‘Policy Discussion Papers – Security Sector Cluster: 1. Defence and National Security, 2. Home Affairs’ [in which] MDC-T announces plans to fire all serving security chiefs…and hire what is termed senior police staff from Western countries to instill ‘professionalism’ in the force.[vi]

The intimate relationship between the MDC-T and US intelligence illustrates the degree to which Tsvangirai is not merely compromised but, in many ways, an outright agent of the United States and the other imperial powers. The MDC-T would seek to transform Zimbabwe into little more than another compliant African client state where the needs of the poor majority would be trumped by the power of the wealthy minority serving the needs of multinational corporations.

The WikiLeaks cables also reveal how the United States has been actively working and preparing for regime change in Zimbabwe. Former US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Christopher Dell wrote that:

Our policy is working and it’s helping drive changes here. What is required is simply the grit, determination and focus to see this through. Then, when the changes finally come we must be ready to move quickly to help consolidate the new dispensation…He [Mr. Tsvangirai] is the indispensable element for regime change, but possibly an albatross around their necks once in power.[vii]

The cables show the intimate working relationship that exists between the so-called opposition and their Western backers. Although this is no secret in Zimbabwe, it comes as news to many in the West who have been thoroughly propagandized to believe that the MDC-T and Tsvangirai represent substantive change and a move toward increased democracy. On the contrary, the MDC-T is the quintessential counter-revolutionary movement specifically designed to destroy the tremendous gains made by ZANU-PF and Mugabe since liberation.

What’s Next?

Zimbabwe’s immediate future is going to be shaped by the impending national elections. Naturally, ZANU-PF and MDC-T will be vying for the leadership mantle in what will be a hotly contested election. That being said, we are seeing the usual forces of “soft power” aligning themselves in preparation for a major destabilization effort around the elections. As we saw most recently in Venezuela, disputing elections is one of the favorite tactics of the imperialist ruling class, allowing them and their minions to engage in protracted subversion of democratic institutions in order to foment civil unrest and thereby delegitimize the elected government.

One well known organ of imperialist propaganda is the George Soros-funded International Crisis Group which recently issued a report entitled “Zimbabwe: Election Scenarios”, laying out in great detail the various ways in which the United States and its allies and clients must intervene in the elections. In particular, the report states that:

The pervasive fear of violence and actual intimidation contradicts rhetorical commitments to peace. A reasonably free vote is still possible, but so too are deferred or disputed polls, or even a military intervention. The international community seems ready to back the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which must work with GPA partners to define and enforce “red lines” for a credible vote…That the elections are likely to be tense and see some violence and intimidation is clear; what is not yet clear is the nature of the violence, its extent, and the response it will generate.[viii]

To the layman, such a description might seem innocuous – a paper outlining the possible outcome of the election. However, even a cursory examination of recent similar episodes in Venezuela, Iran, and elsewhere shows that “disputed elections” are the favorite tool of subversion by the imperial powers which use NGOs such as the International Crisis Group as their unofficial mouthpieces. When the ICG speaks, it is with the voice of US intelligence and the ruling class.

If the experience of Venezuela is any indication, we are likely to see violence in the streets should MDC-T lose the election, particularly if the margin of victory is small. As with Capriles and the US-funded opposition in Venezuela, the creation of violence in the streets is merely a trick employed for the purposes of destabilizing the government in a time of transition, with the goal of creating enough chaos to delegitimize the rule of the victors. And so, ZANU-PF and the Zimbabwean people must remain vigilant as the country heads into these all-important elections

Zimbabwe has come a long way since the official end of the liberation struggle. As years have passed, the nation and its people have been transformed from servants to masters, dependent children to independent and free human beings. In that same time, the former masters have attempted to employ countless strategies to continue their exploitation and domination of the resources and the people. Because of the leadership of Mugabe and ZANU-PF, as well as the determination of the Zimbabwean people, Zimbabwe has metamorphosed into the envy of Africa. Of course, there are very real problems in the country, with wealth not nearly approaching that of other African states that have remained loyal to the imperial system.

However, when wealth is concentrated in the hands of a kleptocratic ruling elite, is that really wealth? Looking at Zimbabwe, we see a true model for Africa: an independent path to progress and equitable development. It is for this reason that the imperial powers look to destroy all that has been built in Zimbabwe…and for this same reason, we must stand to defend her.

NSA telephone, Internet spying data shared with British Intelligence

Reuters / Ralph Orlowski
Reuters / Ralph Orlowski

Data covertly collected by the US National Security Agency (NSA) from American telecom and Internet firms has been shared with its British counterpart, media reports revealed.

Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has been given information gathered in the US-run PRISM system, which grants the American spy agency a direct line to data stored on the servers of Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo and five other tech giants.

Documents obtained by the Guardian revealed that the GCHQ has had access to PRISM since at least June 2010, having generated 197 intelligence reports from it last year. Access to the information has allowed the British electronic eavesdropping and security agency to bypass the formal legal process required to obtain such information from a non-UK-based company.

Throughout PRISM’s seven-year existence, operatives at the NSA and FBI have collected email, video and voice chat, videos, photos, voice-over-IP (Skype) chats, file transfers and social networking details, with the ostensible purpose of thwarting terror attacks.

In a statement to the Guardian, the GCHQ insisted it “takes its obligations under the law very seriously.”Apple, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Facebook have all publically disavowed knowledge of PRISM or any cooperation with the program.

The GCHQ was further provided access to so-called “telephony metadata” culled from the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon –  one of the largest telecommunication companies in the United States – current and former US intelligence officials familiar with the operation told the Daily Beast.

Intelligence sources revealed that in a few cases, the NSA had shared unedited analysis of the metadata with the GCHQ. However, British nationals were reportedly not allowed to sit at the physical terminals where NSA analysts mined metadata.

“My understanding is if the British had a phone number, we might run the number through the database for them and provide them with the results,” said one former senior US intelligence official with knowledge of the program.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (FISA) Court granted both the NSA and the FBI unfettered access to the metadata from April 25 to July 19 of this year. This data does not reveal the actual content of the telephone conversations or the names of the participants on either line, though the numbers dialed – as well as the time and duration of the calls – are included.

Late Thursday, James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence in the US, decried the leaks on the programs as “reprehensible.”

“The unauthorized disclosure of information about this important and entirely legal program is reprehensible and risks important protections for the security of Americans,” he said.

Clapper further said that media reports surrounding the programs were rife with inaccuracies, adding that the collection of communications is allowed under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Since 1946, the US and the UK have been party to the United Kingdom-United States of America Agreement, which facilitates the sharing of signals intelligence between the two nations. The agreement was later expanded to include the commonwealth states of Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

8 December 2012. Fake Syrians army scum* release video demonstrating the killing of rabbits via chemical weapon that looks like VX, in threat against the Syrian population. Dr. Bashar al-Ja’afari, Permanent Representative of Syria, to the United Nations, suggests it was made in a Turkish lab. The video shows containers of chemical weapons (CW) manufactured by the Turkish company, Tekkim.

2 January 2013. Turkish Andadolu Agency interviews Bassam al-Dada, fsa scum political analyst, who reports that they have ability to make and use CWs.

19 March 2013. fsa scum launch rocket containing chemical weapons grade chlorine, against civilian population of Khan al-Assal, rural Aleppo. Twenty-five killed, more than 80 hospitalized.

20 March 2013. Syrian government petitions the U.N. to launch an investigation into the use of chemical weapons against the civilian population of Khan al-Assal.

23 March 2013. Antecedents** F/UK set precedent by demanding investigation of CW use in Syria, a country that is neither France nor Britain, and therefore does not have the legal authority to make such a demand.

26 March 2013. Ban names Sellstrom to head all CW investigation.

23 April 2013. Israeli Brigadier General Itai Brun is first to use “s” word at press briefing, claiming that Syria has used it against Syria. Though he offered no evidence, echolalia among the west’s yellow urinals was immediate.

24 April 2013. NYT yellow urinalist Sanger writes as though being paid by the word, that Israel has proof Syria used CW.

24 April 2013. NYT yellow urinalist Sanger — apparently rushing from his keyboard to his Skype account — subsequently whines to CNN yellow urinalist Amanpour that Brun offered no evidence at his press briefing: “He did not give us a sense of what direct evidence they had.”

25 April 2013. Undeterred by NYT yellow urinalist Sanger’s lamentations, CNN yellow urinalist Amanpour interviews fsa scum who claims that Syria has been using CW against Syria in various parts of Syria.

29 April 2013 CNN yellow urinalist Amanpour interviews alleged Syrian physician scum who claims that Syria has been using CW against Syria in various parts of Syria. He claims: Four people died. Then three members of one family, including a toddler, a child, a mommy, died. Four samples from dead corpses were sent to Turkey. Yellow urinalist Amanpour shows video of people with cans of shaving cream on their faces, while lying on litters, as uncorroborated, corroborating, evidence. Alleged doctor says “Ministry of Defense also confirmed that this is probably a chemical attack.” Who cares that U.S. does not have a “Ministry of Defense”?

30 April 2013. Dr. Bashar Ja’afari holds historic press briefing, explaining that after forty days, the U.N. has not begun investigation per Syria’s request. [1]

6 May 2013. U.N. Human rites investigator del Ponte does impressive imitation of Brun, in interview with Radiotelevisione svizzera — though not known if with the radio or the television portion, and reported initially by France 24 — by using “s” word but saying it was used by fsa scum. Claims to have no evidence. Her remarks give all yellow urinalism venues the opportunity to report that Syria has used CWs against Syria, a whole lot of times, in various parts of Syria.

27 May 2013. F/UK yellow urinals Le Merde and The Guardian…of Hell, Geryon, give doppelganger reports that Syria has been using CWs against Syria, in various parts of Syria, using the “s” word. The French Foreign Minister is so impressed with these reports that he holds a press conference and announces a red line has been crossed because nothing has been verified.

4 June 2013. According to Paulo Pinheiro, chair of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry, reports that the U.N. human rites investigators reported that “limited quantities” of unknown CWs, unknown means of dispersal, unknown perpetrators, except that Syria has used CWs against Syria in various parts of Syria, and oh, yeah, the fsa scum did too! This must be magically divined, as at this time, now Despite not having begun the investigation requested by the Syrian government, into the chemical weapons attack against Khan al – Assal, now 86 (eighty – six) days ago.

[1] Essential viewing.

*”scum” is both singular and plural. I use it to honor the memory of the martyred Sheikh al-Bouti, who used this term (though I personally believe actual scum may find it insulting).

**In jurisprudence, “an antecedent cannot be part of the jury.” — Dr. Bashar al-Ja’afari, at his U.N. press briefing, 30 April 2013 (France tested its first nuclear weapon on persons in the Algerian desert. Britain dropped mustard gas on Iraqi tribes who resisted British colonialism.).

Myanmar Muslim Genocide Awareness Convention: this Sunday in LA

Tim King

A fascinating and important event to help people understand the Genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Burma.

(LOS ANGELES) – The Myanmar Muslim Genocide Awareness Convention happens this Sunday in Los Angeles. Matt Rains and Alia Mehboob of Lux Capio Photography Agency, will show their incredible photographs at this special event, taken during recent trips to Burma, now known as Myanmar.

These images reveal the darkness that has enveloped an erratic SE Asian country, long ruled by a military junta, regarded internationally as a pariah state, which is now recognized by the United States as a ‘democracy’.

Rarely if ever, has that word been stretched so dreadfully thin.

It is a land soaked in blood and disparity. Last October we reported that Dr. Nora Rowley, a Human Rights Physician who lived in Burma for years, observed that the violence, “is looking more like Bosnia and true Genocide every day rather than ethnic cleansing.”

The Rohingya people are routed like Holocaust Jews and killed for their religion and ethnicity specifically. Last week U.S. officials were asking Burma not to implement its new “two child” law for Rohingya Muslims. It begs the question, what is it that lurks in the heart of man that turns them into brutal unrepentant monsters? I am growing less patient over time with the ignorance that follows the Buddhist religion around like a bad smell.

There are Buddhists in Tibet and Vietnam and all over the world who never commit violent acts, but the only two Genocides of the 21st Century have been committed by Buddhists. It is a bitter pill to swallow but that doesn’t change the facts. The awareness level of these widespread cases of state terrorism is painfully low. The actions of senior Buddhist leaders in reeling in the violence is almost non-existent.

I often hear, “Buddhism isn’t a religion, it is a system of belief,” and those who state that are in fact sorely mistaken. The Buddhists of Burma are conditioned to believe in superiority over people of other faiths. We think they wouldn’t harm a fly, when in fact they rape, torture and murder this population of Muslims on a daily basis. If you aren’t a Buddhist, or a western traveler, you aren’t safe there.

Lux Capio Photography Agency

Rakhine Buddhists are conditioned for mob violence, just like the Sinhala Buddhists of Sri Lanka who managed to exterminate 160,000 Tamil Hindus and Christians in 2009 while the world, from the Americans media and politicians to those in India, turned a blind eye.

The annihilation of the Rohingya Muslim minority culture by Rakhine Buddhists began almost one year ago and that is one year too long. Unlike almost all other U.S. based news agencies, we have been covering it since the beginning.

The Myanmar Buddhists are in a moral disarray and the trail of Rohingya blood traces back to an incident last July that may have simply been staged, may have never happened at all… It was the alleged rape and murder of a young Buddhist woman. Photos of a woman’s mangled body are reported to be those of the victim. These were widely circulated by Rakhine groups who have clearly been intent on killing and eradicating the Rohingya from the country for decades, long before this last year of intense bloodshed.

Those photos were the jump off point. The day following their release, ten Muslim men from a totally different part of the country were pulled from a bus and murdered in the street by Buddhists in broad daylight in an act of vengeance. That attack opened the floodgates. Since then hundreds and hundreds of Rohingya villages and mosques have been burnt to the ground, and thousands of human beings have been murdered and forced into refugee camps where they languish without adequate food, water, medicine, etc.

The Rohingya, denied citizenship in Burma since 1982, have been described by the UN as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.

Buddhist 969 supporter… from: My Oh Myanmar !

They are falsely labeled as “illegal immigrants from Bangladesh” when that is not the case. I have written many articles about this over the last year. We have shown conclusive proof that Rohingya Muslims have lived in Burma for hundreds of years.

But what if those “illegal immigrant” charges were true? It still would not give the Buddhists the right to become murderous bullies and genocidal, homicidal maniacs.

The group that is heading the human destruction is a Buddhist gang known as “969” – literal skinheads lead by a violent, influential monk named Wirathu, and they are bent on ethnic cleansing. The crimes of so many of these neo-nazi incarnates would be punishable by death in courts all over the world, but in Burma a Muslim can be raped, tortured or even murdered with almost no repercussion.

I would think that the way the 969 group utilizes the swastika as part of their identity, would inspire great anger within the Jewish community. So far this Nazi swastika thing is failing to draw the wrath of groups like American Israel Public Interest Committee (AIPAC). I think almost any decent human being would be offended, and it is particularly bizarre that an ethnic group would adopt that symbol that screams ‘white power’.

It is obscene on all counts.

The group states in their 24 March 2013 article, Stop 969, Burma’s Fastest Growing neo-Nazi ‘Buddhist’ Nationalst Movement:

It is the most dangerous, but fast-growing neo-Nazi “Buddhist” movement in Burma founded by Burma’s skinhead monks after the one-sided and large scale Rakhine racist violent slaughter of the Rohingya Muslims in Western Burma last year.

It is led, most prominently by a Saffron-robed pseudo-monk Mr Wirathu.  Mr Wirathu, a Saffron-robed fake Buddhist monk and preacher, who was jailed in 2003 for his direct involvement in the massacre of Muslim families and destruction of a mosque in the up-country town of Kyauk-hse, the birthplace of the aging and retired despot Senior General Than Shwe.  (See this Asia Times article about his neo-Nazi hate-mongering against the Muslims of Burma as early as 2003).

With respect to these gory details, I can’t stress how important the Los Angeles “Myanmar Muslim Genocide Awareness Convention” this Sunday, is for media, political leaders and the general public to attend.

Lux Capio Photography Agency

I’ve had the privilege of seeing Matt and Alia’s photography and video and hearing the details of their often harrowing journeys to Burma that allowed them to bring back a great deal of evidence from this ethnic cleansing. The über vivid imagery removes any doubts about the enormity of the challenges that lie ahead for the Rogingya Muslims.

The problem with Myanmar is that U.S. corporations want to profit from this mostly virgin country, and they are looking past the Genocide in order to do business, with the support of their political leaders.

The absolutely most obscene thing that has taken place, was the nomination of Myanmar President Thein Sein for a Nobel Prize. It was Edmund Burke who famously said, “The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing”. Sein did nothing.

The Nobel Prize, once such a distinguished honor, is given out today to leaders who look the other way and keep their lips clamped shut over Human Rights violations. See the 26 April 2013 article, Myanmar’s Thein Sein – Oversee a Genocide and then Receive a Nobel Prize?

Lux Capio Photography Agency

What a disappointing thing, but it’s nothing new.

The silent Genocidalist, Aung San Suu Kyi, was admired for years because we in the world believed she was the answer for Burma. However she is a Rakhine Buddhist too, and she intentionally, defiantly refused to speak out over the plight of this tiny minority of people as they were cut down like trees in a forest and laid to waste. Suu Kyi had the ability to do far more, she did nothing, shattering the illusion for so many of us. See the 03 November 2013 article, Aung San Shoot Thee?

The following is from the organizers of the event:

The momentum of violence and atrocities on Burmese (Myanmar) Muslims, committed by the Neo-Nazi extremists groups supported by government armed forces in Burma has escalated to a genocidal level. Thousands of lives have been lost and more than a hundred thousand people have been driven out of their homes and placed in the concentration camps. Human Rights Watch and Genocide Watch organizations have declared that these crimes were committed under the name of ethnic cleansing (or) genocide.

Now, Burmese American communities along with our fellow Americans have reached to a point to voice our concern about such heinous crimes and to prevent them from happening not only in Burma but also anywhere around the world again.

Again, may we take this opportunity to extend our cordial invitation to you from our community? We are looking forward to welcoming you in Los Angeles, California.

Panel speakers will be discussing historical background, nature and forms of violence that lead to the genocidal stages as well as prevention methodologies and lessons learned from the past experiences.

Your participation will empower our efforts to stop genocide in Burma and all around the world.

More on Matt Rains and Alia Mehboob

Matt Rains, Alia Mehboob & Tim King in California. Photo: Susie King

I first met Alia through email correspondence. She explained that they had been traveling back and forth to Burma and had incredible photo documentation of what was taking place. Eventually we had the opportunity to spend a couple of days together and I was extremely impressed with the tenacity of these two. Matt Rains is a West Point educated former Army Captain, he was a Blackhawk pilot. He told me he was nearly ten years into his career when he departed and became a photographer.

He said it wasn’t long ago that he could not have seen himself with long hair, working overseas in a combat zone. I think I said something to the effect of, “Yeah I know exactly what you mean.”

Matt served this country with great distinction and an obvious pride that he will always possess. I am glad both he and Alia have the moral fortitude and exceptional character to get themselves into and back out of extremely dangerous situations. Some of the material I was shown will never air publicly, some of it is just purely tragic. The photos accompanying this article obviously carry that message.

Matt seems to almost tower over Alia, but don’t be fooled, she is tough as nails and she absolutely holds her ground in the face of physical threat, she doesn’t put up with it, and the two are amazing allies in their work. I had introduced them to Dr. Nora Rowley via email, explaining to her at the time how excellent their work product was. Then a few weeks ago, several thousand miles from here in Asia, they ran into her by a chance encounter.

We say “it’s a small world” and yet the world really isn’t small, but Human Rights advocates are drawn together by mysterious forces, many would simply say by God. However it happens, rest assured that it does happen. Some people have the ability to move small mountains, and their actions are a counter balance to the wrongs of this world.

The organizers of this Sunday’s “Myanmar Muslim Genocide Awareness Convention” in Los Angeles, stated:

We, on behalf of Burmese American Muslims Community, would like to invite you to attend Myanmar Muslims Genocide Awareness Convention 2013 in Los Angeles, California, USA, which will be held from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM on June 9, 2013, SUNDAY.

Lux Capio Photography Agency

As a final thought, I know I am emphasizing the crimes of the Rakhine Buddhists emphatically, but I want to note that there is far more to the Rakhine Buddhists than these terrible acts.

Dr. Nora Rowley, who will speak at this weekend’s convention, would be the first to remind us that there are many members of that ethnic group that are not participating in these crimes. The bottom line is that one is too many, and there are thousands upon thousands of Rakhine Buddhists harming Rohingya Muslims.

It is obvious any time people kill in the name of religion, that they are abusing the benefits of group membership. No religions demand this of their followers, if they do then they are falsely abusing the most powerful commodity on earth, that is human faith.

See you in LA this Sunday.

(Editor’s note: The song and video presentation below are possibly the first example of modern western music that celebrates and recognizes both the Rohingya people, and their struggle against the militant government of Burma which is decidedly pro-Rakhine Buddhist and anti-Rohingya Muslim. Even their citizenship is denied. Tim King asked Agron Belica if he could please put his musical talents to work by writing and producing a song about the Rohingyas, it took almost no time and the final version is now here)

C.I.A Pupet Suu Kyi to run for presidency of Burma

Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has indicated her intention to run for the presidency, with elections due to be held in 2015.

Addressing world leaders and heads of business at a major forum, the Nobel Peace laureate called for the amendment of the military drafted Burmese constitution which prevents her from leading the country.

Burma’s current constitution blocks anyone with spouses or children who are overseas citizens from leading the country, which affects the democracy activist whose two sons are British.

Suu Kyi told the forum she wants to run for president and she is “quite frank about it”.
