Obama’s Humanitarianism as Window-Dressing for the US “Deep State” Agenda: The Case of Syria

Global Research

This essay examines the connections between the foreign intervention crisis in Syria, the vast NSA surveillance program that has recently been exposed, and the sequence of events that begin with NSA program changes in February, 2001 — six months before 9/11. The connections are illuminating.

In mid June 2013 the Obama administration announced that it will start arming insurgents against the Syrian government because the regime crossed a “red line” by using chemical weapons — which it estimates have killed, over time, an estimated 100-150 rebels.[1]

What we are not being told is the history of President Bashar Assad, nor is he seen speaking in the American media.

Assad is a medical doctor of mild personality who graduated in Damascus in 1988 and later began a four-year program of ophthalmology in London, England. When Hafez Assad, President of Syria, his father died in 2000, Bashar was elected President of Syria by a large popular majority, and again in 2007.

We are not given insight by the media into President Bashar Assad, the man.

He is married to British-educated Asma al-Assad, born in London, and a former investment banker. “She received the Gold Medal of the Presidency of The Italian Republic for humanitarian work in 2008 and won an honorary archaeology doctorate from La Sapienza university in Rome.”[2]

Although seen in interviews by independent journalists to be mild-mannered, respectful, rationally articulate, and fluent in English, Assad is seldom seen speaking in the US mainstream media.

Thus it is poignant to watch his 18-minute interview with German reporter Jürgen Todenhöfe in July 2012, and to hear his under-stated account of the foreign-backed insurgents whose violence has led to the deaths of thousands of Syrian state supporters.[3]

It is illuminating to watch the 5-minute interview Assad gave the Sunday Times, March 3, 2013, saying that as long as Britain arms the insurgents to save Syria from its repressive dictator, “the arsonist cannot be seen as the firefighter.”

In another recent German TV interview, Assad (whom we know is a medical doctor) discusses the alleged and contradictory use of chemical weapons — defined as “weapons of mass destruction” — in local ground combat. He goes on to describe external financial support to the insurgents as “stoking the fire.”[4]

Indeed, Aron Lund, a Swedish observer of the Syrian opposition, has listed about a dozen rebel groups, the largest of which are funded by either the West, the Gulf states, or Turkey. The 80,000-strong Free Syrian Army (also known as the Supreme Military Council), “was created in December 2012 after pressure from Western and Gulf Arab nations, which seek to make it the military wing of Syria’s civilian exile group, the National Coalition.”[5]

To understand why the Western media, under heavy influence from the Pentagon, has demonized Mr. Assad as a vicious and indiscriminate murderer[6] of his own subjects, we can turn to a 2006 interview of General Wesley Clark, a Rhodes scholar and the Supreme Allied Commander (Europe) of NATO, 1997-2000.

Speaking on March 2, 2007 to Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, Clark said that about ten days after 9/11 he visited his former staff in the Pentagon. They told him, in astonished tones, that the US was going to go to war with Iraq — which they said had no demonstrated connection to 9/11, and they were at a complete loss to explain why.[7]

A few weeks later Clark went back to the Pentagon and was told that the US was going to “take out” seven Middle East countries in the next five years: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran. He added, “Had there been no oil there it would be like Africa. Nobody is threatening to intervene in Africa.[8]

This early agenda for “take out,” said by Clark to have been in place immediately after 9/11, raises questions about the anthrax attacks, which started September 18, 2001.

The letters containing the lethal spores targeted, among others, Democratic Senators Tom Daschle (Senate Majority Leader) and Patrick Leahy. During this period of intense panic in Washington the 342-page Patriot Act was rushed through Congress October 24 and passed the Senate the next day.[9]

It has since been amply demonstrated that the highly weaponized spores contained in the anthrax letters originated from within a US military laboratory, and were too sophisticated to have been produced by a non-state laboratory or by an individual.[10]

Now if we look at the origins of the NSA super-surveillance program, which is generally believed to have begun right after 9/11 as a provision of the Patriot Act, we will see that in fact it began in February, 2001, within weeks after the swearing in of the Bush administration.

Mr. William Binney, a 40-year veteran of the NSA, explains that all communications companies were required at that time to collect data on their customers. One company, Qwest Communications, refused to do this, and its CEO, Joe Nacchio, is still in prison on false charges of insider trading.[11]

Mr. Binney emphasized that virtually no one in the country was exempt. Even judges were recorded, so that almost everyone in the United States could potentially be coerced, using selected personal data as leverage.[12] The implications are staggering. How many elected and bureaucratic officials could be — or have already been — brought to heel in this manner?

Thus by 9/11 the “deep state” was already armed against its population in a manner that Binney referred to as “J. Edgar Hoover on super steroids.”[13]

Meanwhile, the mainstream media have increasingly accepted the US position that Middle East countries plagued by civil wars caused by repressive dictators must be saved by humanitarian intervention from enlightened Western democracies.

Indeed Reuters correspondent Mark Hosenball reported last August that “President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government.”[14]

The Reuters article continued:

“Recent news reports from the region have suggested that the influence and numbers of Islamist militants, some of them connected to al Qaeda or its affiliates, have been growing among Assad’s opponents.”[15]

On June 17, 2013, CNN supported the al Qaeda connection:

“Al Qaeda’s affiliate inside Syria is now the best-equipped arm of the terror group in existence today, according to informal assessments by U.S. and Middle East intelligence agencies, a private sector analyst directly familiar with the information told CNN.”[16]

In May, 2013, former FBI translator and whistle-blower[17] Sibel Edmonds had reported that “Bin Laden – and his number 2 Al Qaeda lieutenant – Ayman al-Zawahiri – worked with the U.S. government for 3 months after 9/11 to coordinate destablization in the Caucus region.”[18]

In light of the evidence above connecting al Qaeda to the U.S. government, it is imperative to go back to 9/11 — the trigger event for the global war on terror — and take a second look.

In fact this is being done.

A new source of evidence-based research is being developed by the academic 24-member 9/11 Consensus Panel,[19] which has developed 32 Consensus Points examining the official claims about how events unfolded that day. The Panel uses a standard medical model to evaluate its evidence, which is intended to provide confidence to the media and the public in reconsidering the events of 9/11.

The enormous cost in lives and dollars of the Middle East wars, coupled with the pervasive spying of domestic citizens now in progress, should prompt all those interested in democracy to look carefully at this evidence.

And regarding Syria at this moment, why is it the responsibility of the United States to intervene in the civil war of a sovereign country?

If humanitarian intervention is indeed desired, why is it not a peace-keeping initiative arranged by the United Nations?

Hamas Officially Sides with Zionist – Western War Agenda against Syria

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc),- The leading Hamas official, Dr. Abou Marzook, has issued a public statement, addressing Hezbollah. Marzook demands that Hezbollah withdraws from Syria to “focus on the resistance against Zionism”.

Despite Marzook´s attempt to “spin” his statement as opposing Zionism or Israel, a review of the political development pertaining Hamas, Syria and Qatar reveals, that at least a leading and significant faction within Hamas has actively prepared for the joint Zionist – Western – GCC subversion on Syria.

Dr. Mousa Abumarzook

On 14 June, the leading Hamas member, Dr. Abou Marzook issued a statement on his Facebook page, in which he demanded, that the Lebanese Hezbollah Party withdraws its fighters from Syria, so as to concentrate on the resistance against Israel.(1  The Hamas official´s statement was made not much more than a week, after Western, Israeli and GCC backed insurgents suffered a decisive defeat in the Syrian city Qasair.(2

Some of the primary, contributing factors to the Syrian armed forces victory over the foreign-backed terrorist forces in Qasair were:

Saudi Smuggling Route to Syria Disclosed.

That the Syrian armed forces have adopted a counter insurgency strategy which partially is based on the Russian military´s experience with combating western-backed insurgents in Chechnya.

That Iraq´s Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki has taken action and closed a Saudi-Arabian smuggling route, which is starting in the Anbar province. This well-known smuggling route was during the U.S. occupation of Iraq used by Saudi-backed terrorists, who created sectarian violence in Iraq. The route was re-activated in 2011, and used for logistical support of Saudi-backed terrorists in Syria.

The Iraqi Prime Minister´s decision to close the route, as well as to help securing the Iraqi – Syrian border came, after Saudi-Arabia, in late 2012, restarted its support of terrorism in Iraq, which this time was being directed against the Al-Maliki administration.(3

Al-Maliki´s initiative effectively closed the Syrian – Iraqi border with the exception of Kurdish administrated Iraqi regions, and weakened the insurgents in Syria.

Saad Hariri

That Hezbollah has taken the initiative to help closing the Lebanese border for insurgents. Lebanon has been used as a front line against Syria. Two of the primary pillars of support for terrorists who infiltrated from Lebanon into Syria are the Saudi-Lebanese citizen, former Lebanese prime Minister, and leader of “The Future Movement”, Saad Hariri, and the leader of the Lebanese Druze Community and Chairman of Lebanon´s Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt.

Hariri´s implication became publicly known after several covertly recorded audio tapes surfaced. One of the audio tapes and a translation into English were published on nsnbc international. (4

W Jumblatt

Walid Jumblatt became implicated after a person with close ties to Jordanian intelligence made it public, that Jumblatt was under suspicion for having been involved in the delivery of 50 ton military equipment from the Israeli “Raphael Industry” (5, at a value of approximately 650 million USD to an airfield in the Kurdish administered, Iraqi city Erbil. nsnbc international has written to Raphael Industry, encouraging them to clear the company´s name, but never received a reply.

It is explicitly mentioned, that the delivery took place after Jumblatt was shuttling back and forth between Qatar, Erbil and Turkey. The weapons were reportedly delivered to Western and Qatar backed terrorists in Syria.

Istanbul Protests

Istanbul Protests

Turkey´s position as front-line state and logistic back-land for insurgents in Syria has been weakened by two factors. The arrest of 12 members of the western-backed, internationally banned, al-Qaeda associated terrorist organization Jabhat al-Nusrah, in Turkey, who were in possession of two kg of the lethal Sarin nerve agent and the subsequent confiscation of two kg Sarin from insurgents in Syriawhich resulted in demands for heightened security and sharp criticism of the Erdogan administrations support of terrorists in Syria. (6

The mass protests against the Erdogan administration which erupted on 31 June 2013, and which have significantly weakened the Turkish Prime Minister´s position with regard to the Syria war and a joint Gül / Erdogan / US regional project for the “balkanization” of Turkey. (7

Israel´s covert war on Syria, a War on the Palestinian and anti-Zionist Resistance. Israel´s involvement in the attempted subversion of Syria has been well documented. Moreover, Israel´s covert war on Syria is a war against the sole Arab nation, which has consequently and consistently supported the Palestinian resistance against Israel´s occupation of Palestine and the Lebanese resistance against Zionist plans for a greater Israel, including parts of Lebanon.

Besides the disclosure, that Israel delivers weapons to insurgents in Syria via straw-men like Jumblatt, there is other, and stronger evidence for Israel´s support of the insurgents, for direct military involvement by Israeli forces on the ground, and not least for the fact, that Israel has been a primary factor behind the planning of the war on Syria, years before the first public demonstrations in Syria in 2011.

idf in syria

In May 2013 an Israeli military vehicle was confiscated near the Syrian city Qasair. The confiscation of the Israeli military vehicle in the city, which later was liberated by Syrian armed forces, aided by Hezbollah who cut of re-supply lines for the insurgents, clearly indicates that Israel has “boots on the ground” in Syria. (8

In June 2013 a UNDOF officer from the withdrawn Austrian Brigade in the Israeli occupied Syrian Golan Highs stated, that Israel provides significant support for terrorists in Syria, that Israel maintains a joint military – terrorist operations room in the Golan, and that Israeli military forces are directly involved in targeting Syrian positions. (9

Roland Dumas, archive

Dumas implicates top-British officials and Israel in planning Syria War years before 2011. Also in June 2013, the former French Foreign Minister Robert Dumas directly implicated top-British officials and Israel in planning the war on Syria, years before the first public demonstrations and the so-called Arab Spring in 2011. (10

During a TV program on the French station LPC, Dumas said:

“I am going to tell you something. I was in England two years before the violence in Syria on other business. I met with top British officials, who confessed to me, that they were preparing something in Syria”.

Dumas continued, indicating that the subversion and invasion of the Syrian Arab Republic with the help of “rebels” was primarily a British plan, while he carefully avoided implicating himself and France, saying:

“This was in Britain not in America. Britain was organizing an invasion of rebels into Syria. They even asked me, although I was no longer Minister of Foreign Affairs, if I would like to participate. Naturally, I refused, I said I am French, that does not interest me”

There are cohorts of other evidence, that supports, that Israel is one of the primary powers behind the war on Syria. One of the most important reasons for the timing of the war on Syria is closely related to the discovery of the worlds largest, known gas reserves in the Persian Gulf in 2007, and the result of new surveys of gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean Levantine, which documented that the gas reserves in the area were 70 % greater than they were previously thought to be.

A joint Iran, Iraq, Syria pipeline project that, if completed, would deliver gas to the Eastern Mediterranean Coast, near the Russian naval base in Tartus, and the fact that Israel would, under no circumstances want to tolerate the political influence Iran and Syria would gain within the European Union, and especially with respect to the E.U.´s policy regarding Palestine, if the E.U., together with the Russian gas delivered via the South Stream pipeline, were to receive more than 45 % of the natural gas it would consume over the coming 100 -120 years from an Iranian, Syrian, Russian cartel.  (11 This is one of the primary reasons for the onset of the planning of the war on Syria by Israel and Qatar in 2007, and Hamas, as it will become clear, is deeply involved in it.

The 2007 U-Turn of Hamas and the Sellout of Syria, Palestine and Hezbollah.

While it is wrong to state, that Hamas is “a creation of Israel” it is correct that Israel has covertly supported Hamas and that “some leading Hamas members” have cooperated with Israel through Qatar. The logic behind Israel´s support of Hamas, not only as a social and religious organization but as a militant force was, that a strong Islamic Party and resistance movement, with roots within the Muslim Brotherhood, was the perfect instrument for weakening the progressive resistance, including progressive factions within the Fatah movement, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Syrian backed As Saika  (Vanguard), and the Syrian backed Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command (PFLP-GC). Syrian and Iranian support of Hamas was a support of the axis for the Liberation of Palestine and the anti-Zionist axis which also included Hezbollah and Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya.

In 2007, Qatar and Israel through Qatar, succeeded at turning two members of this axis away from Iran and Syria. By the means of significant economic incentives and agreements regarding the restructuring of a post-Syria war Middle East, Qatar (and Israel) succeeded at turning Lebanon´s Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya and Palestinian Hamas away from Iran and Syria and toward a re-alignment with the Qatar-based international chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood. During the same period, Turkey´s Foreign Minister Davotoglu received USD 10 billion from Qatar, which were to be spent on preparing the Turkish Muslim Brotherhood for a war on Syria.

The re-alignment of al-Jamaa al-Islamiya with Qatar´s Muslim Brotherhood, which is deeply infiltrated by the British Foreign Intelligence Service MI 6 and the Palestinian Hamas should primarily weaken Hezbollah and Syria, but ultimately also the regional influence of Iran.

Hamas however, having its primary office in Damascus, could not openly admit that they had re-aligned themselves with Qatar. The re-alignment was a well-kept secret until 2011.

Mavi Marmera 2

Hamas – Baptism of Treason. One of the first covert operations, which Hamas was involved in, and which should seed the ground for a war on Syria, was its involvement in facilitating the murder on prominent Turkish Muslim Brothers who were opposed to the Turkish Muslim Brotherhoods involvement in the planned, covert war on Syria.

Mavi Marmara. The operation took place on board the Turkish registered Gaza Freedom Flotilla vessel Mavi Marmara, which was stormed by Israeli troops, in open waters, in an act of piracy. Involved in planning the operation were key Hamas members, as well as Israeli and Turkish / NATO intelligence, and the known NATO double agents and al-Qaeda – LIFG members Harati and Belhadj. Abedlhakim Belhadj was later to become the military governor of Tripoli, Libya, and commander of the Libyan brigades which fought the Syrian armed forces in the battles for Homs in June and July 2012 (12

al amadi

Hamas Leaves Syria. After a Palestinian source with ties to Palestinian and Syrian Intelligence denounced Hamas for treason against Palestine and Syria, in February 2012, Hamas hastily vacated its Damascus office. The last Hamas official to vacate the Damascus office was Imad al-Amadi.

On his return to Gaza, Imad al-Hamadi let himself be celebrated as a national hero. Not a word was abut Hamas realignment with Qatar. Not a word was said about the betrayal of the axis of resistance. Not a word was said about the involvement in the Mavi Marmara killings. The official reason Hamas gave for vacating the Damascus office was, that “the decision was based on the Syrian government´s crack-down against protesters”.  (13

Another fact that was not mentioned for Palestinians, other than to a select group of Hamas members belonging to the pro Qatar fraction of Hamas was, that the fraction was responsible for the murder on numerous Hamas members who opposed their treason. In some cases these liquidations were blamed on, or in fact carried out by Israel´s Mossad.

One such murder was the murder of  one of the the deputies of former Hamas senior commander Mahmud al-Mabhuh, Kamal Hussein Ghannaja in is apartment in a Damascus suburb in June 2012. (14

What was not mentioned during the “return of the Hamas heroes” either, was that at least a strong fraction within Hamas, led by Khaled Meshal, had agreed on the Qatar (and Israeli) endorsed establishment of a Palestinian state in Gaza, while rendering the greatest part of the West Bank and East Jerusalem to Israel, with small, walled, remaining Palestinian enclaves in the West Bank coming under Jordanian jurisdiction with a form of Palestinian autonomy.

Selling out the West Bank for a Hamas / Muslim Brotherhood Caliphate in Gaza. What the Hamas fraction, loyal to Qatar (and Israel), and led by Meshal had agreed to was, what the author, in another article described as Israel´s Final Solution.(15  The plan involves:

The annexation of the greatest part of the West Bank and East Jerusalem by Israel. Small, remaining, walled Palestinian enclaves are planned to go under Jordanian jurisdiction, with a certain degree of autonomy granted for the residents in the enclaves. An official Israeli document confirms, Israel allocates no more than 0.7 % of the West Bank to Palestinians. (16

The annexation of parts of Southern Lebanon and the annexation of the Syrian Golan Highs. The resettlement of Palestinians from the West Bank to Southern Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. The establishment of a Palestinian state, which eventually will be recognized by Israel, in the Gaza Strip and the Gaza Strip only.

This Hamas / Muslim Brotherhood led Palestinian State in Gaza would be economically dependent on Egypt and Israel, and would become integrated into an Egyptian Free Trade Zone (with substantial Qatari and Israeli investments ) in the Sinai. One of the preparatory steps was taken in August 2012, when Hamas, against the protest and warnings of most other Palestinian fractions, declared Gaza a “Liberated Zone”. (17

Hamas, Mousa Abou Marzouq

The Straw that Breaks the camel´s Back. Hamas “Demands” that Hezbollah Leaves Syria. The final evidence for the fact, that at least a leading and strong fraction of Hamas has chosen to side with Qatar´s war on Syria and the Western / Zionist plan for a Greater Israel, with a Palestinian State in Gaza, and Gaza only, was the public statement of the leading Hamas official Dr. Abou Marzook, in which he “demands” that Hezbollah leaves Syria.

It is inconceivable that Dr. Abou Marzook is unaware of the strategic significance of Hezbollah´s solidarity and strategic alliance with Syria against the neo-colonialist and Zionist war project against Syria.

It is also inconceivable, that an experienced politician an intellectual like Dr. Abou Marzook does not know the importance of the national integrity and security of Syria for the anti-colonialist and anti-Zionist alliance and for the survival of the Palestinian State, be it within the borders of 1948 or 67.

It is also inconceivable, that Dr. Abou Marzouk would be making such a statement, even on Facebook, without him having the approval of and without the statement being concurrent with the leadership of Hamas.

The Statement will be the last straw, that will break “A” camel´s back. The question is, which camel ?

Provided, that the people of Palestine, the political fractions as well as patriotic members of Hamas recognize the significance and the full implications of Marzook´s statement and the underlying politics, and provided that this recognition is transformed into a renewed resistance, it may very well be, that it is the back of the camel of the Zionist – neo-colonialist, anti-Palestinian and anti-Syrian alliance that will be broken. Ultimately, that would include the Hamas fraction that decided to sell Palestine and Syria for power in Gaza. It is Hamas, and Hamas only, that can purge those members who are betraying Palestine.

Provided, that such response fails to manifest, and provided, that Hamas succeeds at further dividing the anti-colonialist, anti-Zionist, anti-Palestinian and anti-Syrian alliance, and provided Syria falls, it will be the back of Palestine that will be broken beyond repair.

The existence of Palestine, as a sovereign state, within borders that are drawn according to international law, has never been as threatened as it is today. The primary sources of this threat is Zionism and a strong enemy within. It is a Hamas, that has aligned itself with the forces of Zionism and neo-colonialism, against Syria, Hezbollah, solidarity and against the axis of resistance.

Understand the Globalization of Poverty and the New World Order

Global Research

by Michel Chossudovsky

In the expanded second edition of Chossudovsky’s international best-seller, the author outlines the contours of a New World Order which feeds on human poverty and the destruction of the environment, generates social apartheid, encourages racism and ethnic strife and undermines the rights of women. The result as his detailed examples from all parts of the world show so convincingly, is a globalization of poverty.

This book is a skillful combination of lucid explanation and cogently argued critique of the fundamental directions in which our world is moving financially and economically.

In the enlarged second edition, the author reviews the causes and consequences of famine in Sub-Saharan Africa, the dramatic meltdown of financial markets, the demise of State social programs and the devastation resulting from corporate downsizing and trade liberalisation.

“This concise, provocative book reveals the negative effects of imposed economic structural reform, privatization, deregulation and competition. It deserves to be read carefully and widely.”
– Choice, American Library Association (ALA)

“The current system, Chossudovsky argues, is one of capital creation through destruction. The author confronts head on the links between civil violence, social and environmental stress, with the modalities of market expansion.”
– Michele Stoddard, Covert Action Quarterly

Preface to the Second Edition

Barely a few weeks after the military coup in Chile on September 11, 1973, overthrowing the elected government of President Salvador Allende, the military Junta headed by General Augusto Pinochet ordered a hike in the price of bread from 11 to 40 escudos, a hefty overnight increase of 264%. This economic shock treatment had been designed by a group of economists called the “Chicago Boys”.

At the time of the military coup, I was teaching at the Institute of Economics of the Catholic University of Chile, which was a nest of Chicago trained economists, disciples of Milton Friedman. On that September 11, in the hours following the bombing of the Presidential Palace of La Moneda, the new military rulers imposed a 72-hour curfew. When the university reopened several days later, the “Chicago Boys” were rejoicing. Barely a week later, several of my colleagues at the Institute of Economics were appointed to key positions in the military government.

While food prices had skyrocketed, wages had been frozen to ensure “economic stability and stave off inflationary pressures.” From one day to the next, an entire country was precipitated into abysmal poverty: in less than a year the price of bread in Chile increased thirty-six times and eighty-five percent of the Chilean population had been driven below the poverty line.

These events affected me profoundly in my work as an economist. Through the tampering of prices, wages and interest rates, people’s lives had been destroyed; an entire national economy had been destabilized. I started to understand that macro-economic reform was neither “neutral” – as claimed by the academic mainstream – nor separate from the broader process of social and political transformation. In my earlier writings on the Chilean military Junta, I looked upon the so-called “free market” as a wellorganized instrument of “economic repression”.

Two years later in 1976, I returned to Latin America as a visiting professor at the National University of Cordoba in the northern industrial heartland of Argentina. My stay coincided with another military coup d’état. Tens of thousands of people were arrested and the Desaparecidos were assassinated. The military takeover in Argentina was a “carbon copy” of the CIA-led coup in Chile. Behind the massacres and human rights violations, “free market” reforms had also been prescribed – this time under the supervision of Argentina’s New York creditors.

The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF’s) deadly economic prescriptions applied under the guise of the “structural adjustment program” had not yet been officially launched. The experience of Chile and Argentina under the “Chicago Boys” was a dress rehearsal of things to come. In due course, the economic bullets of the free market system were hitting country after country. Since the onslaught of the debt crisis of the 1980s, the same IMF economic medicine has routinely been applied in more than 150 developing countries. From my earlier work in Chile, Argentina and Peru, I started to investigate the global impacts of these reforms. Relentlessly feeding on poverty and economic dislocation, a New World Order was taking shape.

Meanwhile, most of the military regimes in Latin America had been replaced by parliamentary “democracies”, entrusted with the gruesome task of putting the national economy on the auction block under the World Bank sponsored privatization programs. In 1990, I returned to the Catholic University of Peru where I had taught after leaving Chile in the months following the 1973 military coup.

I had arrived in Lima at the height of the 1990 election campaign. The country’s economy was in crisis. The outgoing populist government of President Alan Garcia had been placed on the IMF “black list”. President Alberto Fujimori became the new president on the 28th of July 1990. And barely a few days later, “economic shock therapy” struck – this time with a vengeance. Peru had been punished for not conforming to IMF diktats: the price of fuel was hiked up by 31 times and the price of bread increased more than twelve times in a single day. The IMF – in close consultation with the US Treasury – had been operating behind the scenes. These reforms – carried out in the name of “democracy” – were far more devastating than those applied in Chile and Argentina under the fist of military rule. In the 1980s and 1990s I traveled extensively in Africa. The fieldresearch for the first edition was, in fact, initiated in Rwanda which, despite high levels of poverty, had achieved self-sufficiency in food production. From the early 1990s, Rwanda had been destroyed as a functioning national economy; its once vibrant agricultural system was destabilized. The IMF had demanded the “opening up” of the domestic market to the dumping of US and European grain surpluses. The objective was to “encourage Rwandan farmers to be more competitive”. (See Chapter 7.)

From 1992 to 1995, I undertook field research in India, Bangladesh and Vietnam and returned to Latin America to complete my study on Brazil. In all the countries I visited, including Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and The Philippines, I observed the same pattern of economic manipulation and political interference by the Washington-based institutions. In India, directly resulting from the IMF reforms, millions of people had been driven into starvation. In Vietnam – which constitutes among the world’s most prosperous rice producing economies – local-level famines had erupted resulting directly from the lifting of price controls and the deregulation of the grain market.

Coinciding with the end of the Cold War, at the height of the economic crisis, I traveled to several cities and rural areas in Russia. The IMFsponsored reforms had entered a new phase – extending their deadly grip to the countries of the former Eastern bloc. Starting in 1992, vast areas of the former Soviet Union, from the Baltic states to Eastern Siberia, were pushed into abysmal poverty.

Work on the first edition was completed in early 1996, with the inclusion of a detailed study on the economic disintegration of Yugoslavia. (See Chapter 17.) Devised by World Bank economists, a “bankruptcy program” had been set in motion. In 1989-90, some 1100 industrial firms were wiped out and more than 614,000 industrial workers were laid off. And that was only the beginning of a much deeper economic fracturing of the Yugoslav Federation.

Since the publication of the first edition in 1997, the World has changed dramatically; the “globalization of poverty” has extended its grip to all major regions of the World including Western Europe and North America.

A New World Order has been installed destroying national sovereignty and the rights of citizens. Under the new rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) established in 1995, “entrenched rights” were granted to the world’s largest banks and multinational conglomerates. Public debts have spiraled, state institutions have collapsed, and the accumulation of private wealth has progressed relentlessly.

The US-led wars on Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003), mark an important turning point in this evolving New World Order. As the second edition goes to print, American and British forces have invaded Iraq, destroying its public infrastructure and killing thousands of civilians. After 13 years of economic sanctions, the war on Iraq plunged an entire population into poverty.

War and globalization go hand in hand. Supported by America’s war machine, a new deadly phase of corporate-led globalization has unfolded. In the largest display of military might since the Second World War, the United States has embarked upon a military adventure, which threatens the future of humanity.

The decision to invade Iraq had nothing to do with “Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction” or his alleged links to Al Qaeda. Iraq possesses 11 percent of the World’s oil reserves, i.e. more than five times those of the US. The broader Middle East-Central Asian region (extending from the tip of the Arabian peninsula to the Caspian sea basin) encompasses approximately 70% of the World’s reserves of oil and natural gas.

This war, which has been in the planning stage for several years, threatens to engulf a much broader region. A 1995 US Central Command document confirms that “the purpose of US engagement. . . is to protect US vital interest in the region – uninterrupted, secure US/Allied access to Gulf oil” .

In the wake of the invasion, Iraq’s economy has been put under the jurisidiction of the US military occupation government led by retired General Jay Gardner, a former CEO of one of America’s largest weapons producers.

In liaison with the US administration and the Paris Club of official creditors, the IMF and World Bank are slated to play a key role in Iraq`s post-war “reconstruction”. The hidden agenda is to impose the US dollar as Iraq’s proxy currency, in a currency board arrangement, similar to that imposed on Bosnia-Herzegovina under the 1995 Dayton Accord. (See Chapter 17.) In turn, Iraq’s extensive oil reserves are slated to be taken over by the Anglo-American oil giants.

Iraq’s spiralling external debt will be used as an instrument of economic plunder. Conditionalities will be set. The entire national economy will be put on the auction block. The IMF and the World Bank will be called in to provide legitimacy to the plunder of Iraq’s oil wealth.

The deployment of America’s war machine purports to enlarge America’s economic sphere of influence in an area extending from the Mediterranean to China’s Western frontier. The US has established a permanent military presence not only in Iraq and Afghanistan, but it has military bases in several of the former Soviet republics as well. In other words, militarization supports the conquest of new economic frontiers and the worldwide imposition of the “free market” system.

Global Depression

The onslaught of the US-led war is occurring at the height of a global economic depression, which has its historical roots in the debt crisis of the early 1980s. America’s war of conquest has a direct bearing on the economic crisis. State resources in the US have been redirected towards financing the military-industrial complex and beefing up domestic security at the expense of funding much needed social programs which have been slashed to the bone.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, through a massive propaganda campaign, the shaky legitimacy of the “global free market system” has been reinforced, opening the door to a renewed wave of deregulation and privatization, resulting in corporate take-overs of most, if not all, public services and state infrastructure (including health care, electricity, water and transportation).

Moreover, in the US, Great Britain and most countries of the European Union, the legal fabric of society has been overhauled. Based on the repeal of the Rule of Law, the foundations of an authoritarian state apparatus have emerged with little or no organized opposition from the mainstay of civil society.

The new chapters added to this second edition address some of the key issues of the 21st century : the merger boom and the concentration of corporate power, the collapse of national and local level economies, the meltdown of financial markets, the outbreak of famine and civil war and the dismantling of the Welfare State in most Western countries.

In Part 1, a new Introduction and a chapter entitled “Global Falsehoods” have been added. Also in Part 1, the impacts of “free markets” on women’s rights are examined. In Part II, on sub-Saharan Africa, the chapter on Rwanda has been expanded and updated following fieldwork conducted in 1996 and 1997. Two new chapters, respectively, on the 1999- 2000 famine in Ethiopia and on Southern Africa in the post-Apartheid era have been added. The chapter on Albania in Part 5, focuses on the role of the IMF in destroying the real economy and precipitating the breakdown of the country’s banking system.

A new Part 6 entitled “The New World Order” includes five chapters. Chapter 18 centers on the “structural adjustment program” applied in Western countries under the surveillance of the World’s largest commercial and merchant banks. The ongoing economic and financial crisis is reviewed in Chapters 19 and 20. Chapters 21 and 22 examine, respectively, the fate of South Korea and Brazil in the wake of the 1997-1998 financial meltdown, as well as the complicity of the IMF in furthering the interests of currency and stock market speculators.

Fake WMD “Intelligence” and Orwellian Double-speak : Washington Is Insane

Global Research

In the 21st century the two hundred year-old propaganda that the American people control their government has been completely shattered. Both the Bush and Obama regimes have made it unmistakenly clear that the American people don’t even influence, much less control, the government. As far as Washington is concerned, the people are nothing but chaff in the wind.

Polls demonstrate that 65% of the US population opposes US intervention in Syria. Despite this clear indication of the people’s will, the Obama regime is ramping up a propaganda case for more arming of Washington’s mercenaries sent to overthrow the secular Syrian government and for a “no-fly zone” over Syria, which, if Libya is the example, means US or NATO aircraft attacking the Syrian army on the ground, thusserving as the air force of Washington’s imported mercenaries, euphemistically called “the Syrian rebels.”

Washington declared some time ago that the “red line” that would bring Syria under Washington’s military attack was the Assad government’s use of chemical weapons of mass destruction against Washington’s mercenaries. Once this announcement was made, everyone with a brain immediately knew that Washington would fabricate false intelligence that Assad had used chemical weapons, just as Washington presented to the United Nations the intentional lie via Secretary of State Colin Powell that Saddam Hussein in Iraq had dangerous weapons of mass destruction.

Remember National Security Advisor Condi Rice’s image of a “mushroom cloud over American cities?” Propagandistic lies were Washington’s orders of the day.

And they still are. Now Washington has fabricated the false intelligence, and president obama has announced it with a straight face, that Syria’s Assad has used sarin gas on several occasions and that between 100 and 150 “of his own people,” a euphemism for the US supplied foreign mercenaries, have been killed by the weapon of mass destruction.

Think about that for a minute. As unfortunate as is any death from war, is 100-150 deaths “mass destruction?” According to low-ball estimates, the US-sponsored foreign mercenary invasion of Syria has cost 93,000 lives, of which 150 deaths amounts to0.0016%. If we round up, Washington’s 150 deaths comes to two-thousands of one percent.

In other words, 99.998% of the deaths did not cross the “red line.” But the 0.002 (rounded up) percent did.

Yes, I know. Washington’s position makes no sense. But when has it ever made any sense?

Let’s stretch our minds just a tiny bit farther. Assad knows about Washington’s “red line.” It has been repeated over and over in order to create in the minds of the distracted American public that there is a real, valid reason for attacking Syria. Why would Assad use the proscribed weapons of mass destruction in order to kill a measly 100-150 mercenaries when his army is mopping up the US mercenaries without the use of gas and when Assad knows that the use of gas brings in the US military against him?

As the Russian government made clear, Washington’s accusation is not believable. No informed person could possibly believe it. No doubt, many Americans wearing patriotism on their sleeves will fall for Washington’s latest lie, but no one else in the world will. Even Washington’s NATO puppets calling for attacking Syria know that the justification for the attack is a lie. For the NATO puppets, Washington’s money overwhelms integrity, for which the rewards are low.

The Russians certainly know that Washington is lying. The Russian Foreign Minister Larov said:

“The [Assad] government, as the opposition is saying openly, is enjoying military success on the ground. The [Assad] regime isn’t driven to the wall. What sense is there for the regime to use chemical arms–especially in such small amounts.”

Larov is a relatively civilized person in the role of Russia’s main diplomat. However, other Russian officials can be more pointed in their dismissal of Washington’s latest blatant lies. Yury Ushakov, an aide to Russian President Putin said: “The Americans tried to present us with information on the use of chemical weapons by the [Assad] regime, but frankly we thought that it was not convincing. We wouldn’t like to invoke references to [the infamous lies o] Secretary of State Powell [at the UN alleging Iraqi WMD], but the facts don’t look convincing in our eyes.” Aleksey Pushkov, the chairman of the Russian Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, cut to the chase.

“The data about Assad’s use of chemical weapons is fabricated by the same facility that made up the lies about Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction. Obama is walking George W. Bush’s path.”

Here in America no one will ever hear straight talk like this from the US presstitutes.

Orwellian double-speak is now the language of the United States government. Secretary of State john kerry condemned Assad for harming “peace talks” while the US arms its Syrian mercenaries.

Washington’s double-speak is now obvious to the world. Not only Assad, but also the Russians, Chinese, Iranians, and every US puppet state which includes all of NATO and Japan, are fully aware that Washington is again lying through its teeth. The Russians, Chinese, and Iranians are trying to avoid confrontation with Washington, as war with the modern nuclear weapons would destroy all life on planet earth. What is striking is that despite 24/7 brainwashing by the presstitutes, a large majority of the American population opposes obama’s war on Syria.

This is good news. It means more Americans are developing the ability to think independently of the lies Washington feeds to them.

What the neocon nazis, the bush/obama regime, and the presstitute media have made clear is that Washington is going to push its agenda of world hegemony to the point of starting World War III, which, of course, means the end of life on earth.

Russia and China, either one of which can destroy the United States, have learned that the US government is a liar and cannot be trusted. The Libyan “no-fly” policy to which Russia and China agreed turned out to be a NATO air attack on the Libyan army so that the CIA-sponsored mercenaries could prevail.

Russia and China, having learned their lesson, are protesting Washington’s assault on Syria that Washington pretends is a “civil war.” If Syria falls, Russia and China know that Iran is next.

Iran is Russia’s underbelly, and for China Iran is 20% of its energy imports. Both Russian and Chinese governments know that after Iran falls, they are next. There is no other explanation for Washington surrounding Russia with missile bases and surrounding China with naval and air bases.

Both Russia and China are now preparing for the war that they see as inevitable. Washington’s crazed, demented drive for world hegemony is bringing unsuspecting Americans up against two countries with hydrogen bombs whose combined population is five times the US population. In such a conflict everyone dies.

Considering the utterly insane government ruling in Washington, if human life exists in 2020, it will be a miracle. All the worry about future Medicare and Social Security deficits is meaningless. There will be no one here to collect the benefits.

Epidemic of Birth Defects and Cancer in Iraq: Nazi America’s Toxic Legacy

by Stephen Lendman

America’s Gulf War, intermittent bombings in the 1990s, the 2003 war, and aftermath left a toxic legacy.

Children born with two heads reflect it. Some had only one eye. Missing sockets look like the inside of an oyster. They’re milky and shapeless.

Some children had tails like a skinned lamb. One or more had a monkey’s face. Girls had their legs grown together. They were half fish, half human.

Miscarriages are frequent. Hundreds of newborns have cleft pallets, elongated heads, overgrown or short limbs, and other malformed body parts. Some are too gruesome to view.

Deformed Iraqi newborns are commonplace. So are virtually every known illness and disease. They’re inordinately frequent. They range from severe headaches, muscle pain and debilitating fatigue, to serious infections, cardiovascular disease, brain tumors and numerous type cancers.

They include leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease and multiple myeloma. Others affect the bile ducts, bones, brain, breasts, colon, prostate, esophagus, gall bladder, liver, lungs, pancreas, pharynx, ovaries, salivary glands, small intestine, stomach, thyroid, urinary tract, and pelvis.

Cancer’s been around a long time. In October 2010, headlined “Cancer: an old disease, a new disease or something in between?”

It said a “striking rarity of malignancies in ancient physical remains might indicate that cancer was rare in antiquity….”

University of Illinois School of Public Health/Cancer Prevention Coalition Chairman/Professor Emeritus Samuel S. Epstein titled his 1978 award-winning book “The Politics of Cancer.”

Twenty years later, he updated it. It’s called “The Politics of Cancer Revisited.”

He’s an internationally recognized cancer expert. He calls it a growth industry. Over recent decades, the incidence of numerous types skyrocketed.

He referred to doing so in modern societies. Iraq and other US war theaters are different. Iraq perhaps is in a class of its own. Vast parts of the country are irradiated.

On May 21, Science Daily headlined “Cancer and Birth Defects in Iraq: The Nuclear Legacy,” saying:

Ten years after the 2003 war, Mosul-based scientists “detected high levels of uranium contamination in soil samples at three sites in the province of Nineveh which, coupled with dramatically increasing rates of childhood cancers and birth defects at local hospitals.”

Iraq’s a toxic wasteland. Scores of pollutants include dangerous chemicals and metals, oil, gasoline, pesticides, bacteria, other poisons, and irradiation. Widespread depleted uranium use caused it.

US bombs, missiles, shells and bullets use solid DU projectiles or warheads. They’re de facto nuclear bombs. Their widespread use is more harmful than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Inhaled or ingested DU particles or dust is highly toxic. They’re designated illegal weapons for good reason. America prioritizes their use. Iraqis suffer horrendously.

Radioactive contamination is virtually everywhere. DU’s half-life is 4.5 billion years. Contamination is permanent. According to Helen Caldicott:

America’s two Iraq wars “have been nuclear wars because they have scattered nuclear material across the land, and people, particularly children, are condemned to die of malignancy and congenital disease essentially for eternity.”

From 1991 – 2008, the incidence of birth defects and childhood cancer spiked sevenfold. Over one-third of US Gulf War vets are dead, seriously ill, or permanently disabled.

Science Daily said widespread “carcinogenic material across Iraq suggests the public health legacy of the two Gulf Wars is only going to get worse.” It does so annually.

In October 2012, London’s Guardian headlined “The victims of Fallujah’s health crisis are stifled by western silence.”

Four new studies link “one of the most severe public health crises in history” to America’s two November 2004 assaults on the city. Cancer rates and birth defects spiked dramatically.

Cancer expert Dr. Chris Busby studied conditions. He called Fallujah’s crisis “the highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied.”

In some respects, Basra replicates it. Its neural tube defects (aka “open back”) incidence is unprecedented. Numbers keep rising.

Hydrocenphalus (water on the brain) cases among newborns are sixfold higher than America. US munitions bear full responsibility.

In September 2012, the Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (BECT) headlined “Metal Contamination and the Epidemic of Congenital Birth Defects in Iraqi Cities.”

Evidence it reported was damning. From October 1994 – October 1995, congenital defects per 1,000 live births in Basra’s Maternity Hospital was 1.37.

In 2003, it was 23. It represented an “astonishing 17-fold (increase) in the same hospital.” From 2003 – 2011, annual evaluations were conducted. Congenital birth defect occurrences and types were reported.

Metal levels in hair, toenails and teeth were provided. Children with birth defects had nearly three times more lead in the enamel portion of deciduous teeth than others living in unimpacted areas.

Parents were abnormally affected. Pregnant mothers and growing fetuses are especially vulnerable. Exposure to toxic air, water, and soil pollutants assures trouble.

Following US bombings, contamination increased dramatically. Cancer, other diseases and birth defects followed. They’re at epidemic levels. They keep rising.

Populations in war zones suffer horrifically. Radiation-affected theaters compound it. BECT said nationwide Iraq ill health reports suggest greater crisis ahead.

“News of increases in childhood cancers, of perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality, and of unusual increases in congenital birth defects, have continued to emerge from across Iraq.”

Data from central Iraq’s Al-Ramadi corroborated Fallujah findings. Basra’s seriously affected.

“Present knowledge on the effects of prenatal exposure to metals, combined with our results, suggests that the bombardment of Al Basrah and Fallujah may have exacerbated public exposure to metals, possibly culminating in the current epidemic of birth defects.”

Internal pre-Gulf War data showed cancer incidence at 40 per 100,000. By 1995, it was 800. By 2005, it doubled to 1,600. Annually, numbers increase.

They understate the problem’s severity. Cancer and birth defect rates are likely much higher. Reporting falls short of what’s needed.

Iraq’s a cauldron of disease, malformed newborns, pain, suffering, misery, deaths and despair.

Daily violence, extreme poverty and unemployment, malnutrition, repression, dysfunctional infrastructure, permanent occupation, and other imperial priorities compound other problems.

Media scoundrels don’t explain. US ones hail an Iraq success story. In August 2008, The New York Times called “Iraq a remarkably safer place than it was when” Petraeus arrived.

Violence “plummeted” significantly. Streets “are flourishing with life. The worst, for now, has been averted.” America’s toxic legacy was ignored.

Violence then was more than acknowledged. Today it’s out-of-control. Resource theft, ecocide, human misery, and health crisis conditions go unreported.

News most fit to print is suppressed. Official fabrications substitute. It’s standard scoundrel media practice.

Most Americans don’t know what’s been done in their name. It’s true in all US war theaters. They don’t ask. They’re not told. It happens every time.

Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. He can be reached at

His new book is titled “Banker Occupation: Waging Financial War on Humanity.”

Zio-Nazi General–“We Destroyed Arab Villages To Create Our State”

A retired Israeli military general told the Israeli Army Radio on his 100 birthday that the Israeli army destroyed and depopulated hundreds of Arab villages in order to establishment the state of Israel in 1948, and added that “he feels good about it.”

“I can sleep with clear mind”, Yitzhak Pondak, told the Israeli Army Radio [Galei Tzahal] last week, “otherwise the number of Arabs in Israel would have been a million more than their number now”.

Pondak headed Platoon #53 of the Givati Brigade, and served as Israel’s ambassador in Tanzania.

“Under my command, soldiers destroyed Arab villages”, he said, “We did what we needed to do, otherwise the number of Arabs now would have been a million more”.

Responding to a question regarding lectures he gives to Israeli soldiers, Pondak said that “the Israel is still facing the same dangers it faced when it was created in 1948”, and added “Should the Jews fail to fight the same way they fought back then, our state will be in real danger”.

He also claimed that should a war break out now, “the Jews will be able to sacrifice the same way they did in 1948”, according to the retired general.

“Wars unite the ranks of the Jewish people”, he added, “after wars, Jews form parties and become divided”.

He also said that he is sorry for the death of 145 Israeli soldiers under his command throughout his years of service, and added that “should those soldiers miraculously come back to life now, and witness the current divisions in the Israeli Jewish society, they would run back to their graves”.

Pondak also served as the Israeli Military Commander of the Gaza Strip in the early seventies of last century. He said that the credit former Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, got for “stopping Arab terrorism in 1971 is overrated”.

“Sharon was harsh without a reason”, he said, “Sharon once told senior military generals that he will give a bottle of Champaign to every soldier who kills an enemy fighter, and will give a soda to every soldier who captures a wounded enemy”.

Bloomberg and NYPD sued for spying on Muslims

A lawsuit filed against the NYPD accuses the city’s police of regularly violating the civil rights of Muslims. The suit claims that the NYPD unconstitutionally profiles and intimidates them, thereby discouraging them from practicing their religion.

Civil rights lawyers filed the lawsuit in a federal Manhattan court on Tuesday. Shortly thereafter, supporters of the suit formed a rally outside of the New York Police Department’s headquarters to reinforce their complaints.

“Our mosque should be an open, religious, spiritual sanctuary, but NYPD spying has turned it into a place of suspicion and censorship,” Hamid Hassan Raza, an imam named as a plaintiff in the case, said at the rally.

The lawsuit was filed by civil rights lawyers on behalf of numerous religious and community leaders, mosques, and a charitable organization that were victims of the NYPD’s  surveillance of Muslim New Yorkers. The lawsuit requests the court to declare such spy initiatives unconstitutional and order the destruction of records related to the program.

The suit is the third major legal action filed against the NYPD for its surveillance of Muslims, since information about the spy program was first revealed in 2011. The document lists Mayor Michael Bloomberg, police commissioner Raymond Kelly, and deputy commissioner of intelligence David Cohen as defendants. Bloomberg has long defended the controversial spy program, claiming that it helps thwart terrorist attacks. But victims of the surveillance believe the NYPD has gone too far, prompting them to change their lifestyles to avoid becoming a target.

“When a police department turns law-abiding people into suspects because they go to a mosque and not a church or synagogue, it violates our Constitution’s guarantees of equality and religious freedom,” Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU National Security Project, said in a press release announcing the suit.

“No one questions that the NYPD has a job to do, but spying on innocent New Yorkers because of their religion is a wrong and ineffective way to do it,” Shamsi added.

The suit describes the fears held by Muslims like Raza, who works as a spiritual leader of Brooklyn’s Al-Ansar mosque. Afraid that he would be misquoted or that his sermons would be taken out of context and scrutinized by the NYPD, Raza has been recording them for years. He avoids bringing up controversial topics and has witnessed a lagging attendance at mosques, due to the Muslim Surveillance Program.

“I don’t talk to my congregants about current affairs or religious subjects the NYPD may find objectionable because I’m afraid of further police attention,” Raza said. “The surveillance program has prevented me from fulfilling my duty as an imam. I cannot believe this has happened in the country that I know and love.”

The lawsuit accuses New York City of violating the First and Fourteenth Amendments. It was filed at a time when the National Security Agency is under scrutiny for its extensive domestic spy tactics first revealed by contractor Edward Snowden.

From the federal government to Big Apple’s police force, widespread domestic surveillance initiatives have left some Americans terrified, particularly Muslims whose daily activities are being secretly monitored by the NYPD.

Report: US military rejected Kerry’s plan to attack in Syria

At White House meeting, US secretary of state called for airstrike on fields Assad army used to launch chemical weapons against rebels. General Dempsey said Air Force could notsimply drop a few bombs

US Secretary of State John Kerry last week called for immediate US airstrikes against airfields under the control of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime – specifically, those fields it has used to launch chemical weapons raids against rebel forces, Bloomberg’s Jeffrey Goldberg reported.

Kerry presented his plan during a principals meeting in the White House situation room, but Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey “threw a series of brushback pitches at Kerry, demanding to know just exactly what the post-strike plan would be and pointing out that the State Department didn’t fully grasp the complexity of such an operation,” according to the report.

Dempsey, the Bloomberg report said, informed Kerry that the Air Force could not simply drop a few bombs, or fire a few missiles, at targets inside Syria: To be safe, the US would have to neutralize Syria’s integrated air-defense system, an operation that would require 700 or more sorties. “Dempsey is said to have argued that a demand by the State Department for precipitous military action in a murky civil war wasn’t welcome,” Goldberg wrote.

According to officials with knowledge of the meeting, Dempsey said that without much of an entrance strategy, without anything resembling an exit strategy, and without even a clear-eyed understanding of the consequences of an American airstrike, the Pentagon would be extremely reluctant to get behind Kerry’s plan.

The outcome of the meeting last week, Goldberg wrote, was to formalize a decision made weeks ago to supply the more moderate elements of the Syrian opposition with small arms and ammunition.

ADL: Khamenei trumpets anti-Semitism

Jewish group blasts Facebook post by Iranian supreme leader on eve of presidential elec-tions, featuring ‘a visual representation of the classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theory of Jewish control of the United States government’

Appearing on the eve of Iran’s June 14 presidential elections, the Iranian leader’s Facebook page featured a visual representation of the classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theory of Jewish control of the United States government, the Jewish group said in a statement.

The visual includes the logo of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and an arrow pointing at a group of suited men, presumably America’s leaders, with text underneath reading “the US president is being elected from only two parties while Zionist regime is controlling everything behind the scenes.”

Next to this visual is a representation of the Iranian electoral system, with a line of voters and an arrow going to one leader, with text suggesting that “in Iran, there have been many presidents being elected in a pure democratic process from ordinary people even without any affiliation to a party.”

ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman said in response, “Shame on the ayatollah for yet again giving voice to raw, full-throated and unadulterated anti-Semitism this time in a forum where millions of ordinary Iranians see and share his message on the eve of national elections.

“The notion that the American system is driven by Jewish control not only shows their ignorance of the true nature of democracy but exposes the bigotry and utter hypocrisy of this regime and its leaders.

“No amount of anti-Semitic fear-mongering can pull the wool over the eyes of the world when it comes to the evil intentions of the Iranian regime,” Foxman concluded.

The ayatollah’s Facebook post also quotes from a speech he gave in February 2010 claiming that Zionists are “the same dominating class that also controls the US system, government and elections.”

The semi-official Mehr News Agency also posted the same message on Twitter.
