This is what HAMAS had to Settle With

NOVANEWS
This is what HAMAS had to settle with: a share in a Sunni rule or regime in Syria in the absence of any prospect right now for Palestinians .One has to admit the fact that if there is no return to Palestine –according to the US/Israeli agenda – Palestinians would have then to be absorbed in their hosting countries where they will be given a share in the rule against relinquishing their cause. This is the spring promised to Palestinians on the remains of Syria as arranged by the world order and Israel .
By not supporting their major ally who hosted them for years and supplied them with weapons and protected their leaders and their independence , Palestinians are burying their cause with their own hands . The cause –of course will not die– it will simply change hands and go to those who qualify for it . It will not suffocate in sectarianism nor in fanaticism , all the Arab bosoms and all bosoms of committed people will be open for it . It will find its right place and resume its own path…Palestinians should know that Israel has already been defeated and the way to defeat it is clear , accessible and feasible , the choice is still there . What would Palestinians choose ?
TRADING PALESTINE FOR A SHARE IN THE ARAB SPRING

The words of the Sayyed of the Resistance were clear , it is an invitation to the Palestinian Resistance to resume the path of the Resistance and not to turn to hopeless Arab systems that failed in every respect regarding the cause . We don’t know if HAMAS will respond to what sounded like the last call sent to HAMAS from Sayyed to go back to its original position of fighting the enemy without betting on anything else that has proved ineffective .
Sayyed’s call was very mild and inviting but are the ears of the leaders of HAMAS still tuned to this kind of talk ? Very unlikely , especially after HAMAS has fallen in the pit of sectarianism carefully prepared by the world order through Turkey and Egypt to make HAMAS slip to no return and relinquish the path of Resistance for that of reconciliation with the Palestinian authority and negotiations with Israel .
The Palestinian Resistance that started with Arafat and his companions has aged –no doubt-without achieving any its goals except for the independence of the narrow district of Gaza and the district that resisted invasion and could defend itself thanks to the Syrian weapons sent to it by the Syrian regime is now witnessing daily demonstrations that support the Syrian opposition. But despite the daily anti Syrian demonstration the living conditions in Gaza have not improved , the border with Rafah has not opened and the electricity is not back yet and things are pretty much the same four years after the Israeli assault. The district is still being daily shelled .
Why this giving up on the cause on behalf of the faction that was supposed to keep the fire burning and the cause alive ? What is this that has happened to HAMAS and when did it start ? The story of the Palestinian Resistance -despite significant sacrifices-is the story of the multiple failures that the liberation movement endured. These failures are maybe due to the fact that liberation- in the proper sense of the word-stopped at a certain time from being on the agenda of the FATEH movement , it was replaced by something else and the mere preservation of the Palestinian identity became-unfortunately -the sole goal , an identity without land .
Very few had a real vision of what liberation meant and implied ; and how it was not limited to a certain locality and to a certain national identity but had a universal dimension . Liberation is certainly not restricted to the Palestine of Sykes/Picot but addresses all Arabs and particularly the human in the Arabs. This absence of clarity in addition to the money poured from Saudi Arabia to FATEH that participated greatly in corrupting the movement till corruption reached an unimaginable level where members started collaborating with MOSSAD and CIA against their own people . HAMAS came later to change the course of things and restitute the armed Resistance as a priority .
HAMAS carried the banner well ., coordinated with Hizbullah and Iran and succeeded in rallying the Arab and Muslim masses and rekindled the cause that was on the verge of being wasted by negotiations and agreements signed with the enemy . But this did not last and, when the Arab springs came , HAMAS turned against its own self and lost the Palestinian cause to Syria al Assad where the battle of Palestine is being fought right now, proving the fact that the cause cannot be confined to a sect nor restricted to a religion and, any attempt at confining it is bound to fail. Had HAMAS taken a pro Syrian stand the same way Syria took a pro HAMAS stand when it supplied the district with weapons , things would have turned out differently and events would not have escalated the way they did. But HAMAS chose the sectarian alignment instead, relinquishing the essential cause for what seems to be a promise of sharing in the rule of neighboring Arab countries .
This is what HAMAS had to settle with: a share in a Sunni rule or regime in Syria in the absence of any prospect right now for Palestinians .One has to admit the fact that if there is no return to Palestine –according to the US/Israeli agenda - Palestinians would have then to be absorbed in their hosting countries where they will be given a share in the rule against relinquishing their cause. Zio-Nazi Forces Use Excessive Lethal Force Killing Palestinian Civilian and Wounding 3 Others, Including 2 Children, in Jenin

NOVANEWS

In an excessive use of lethal force, on Tuesday morning, 20 August 2013, Nazi occupation forces killed a Palestinian civilian and wounded 3 others, including 2 children, in Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 04:30 on Tuesday, 20 August 2013, Nazi forces in 12 military vehicles moved into Jenin refugee camp.  They patrolled the streets and surrounded a house belonging to the family of Bassm al-Sa’di, a leader of Islamic Jihad.  They then raided and searched the house.  In the meantime, a number of Palestinian children and young men gathered and threw stones and empty bottles at the Nazi forces.  Immediately, Nazi soldiers fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, tear gas canisters and sound bombs at the stone throwers. As a result, Majd Mohammed Lahlouh al-Shahla, 21, was seriously wounded by a live bullet to the chest.  He was evacuated to Dr. Khalil Suleiman Hospital in Jenin, but medical efforts to save his life failed.  According to medical sources, the bullet entered al-Shahla’s right armpit and settled in his heart.  Additionally, another 3 civilians, including 2 children, were wounded:

1- ‘Alaa’ Jamal Abu Khalifa, 17, wounded by a live bullet to the side;

2- Kareem Subhi Abu Sbaih, 17, wounded by a live bullet to the side; and

3- Hadi Jamal Lahlouh, 23, wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet to the chest.

PCHR expresses deep concern for this crime which reflects the continued use of excessive force by Nazi forces against Palestinian civilians in disregard for their lives.

PCHR calls upon the international community to take immediate and effective actions to put an end to such crimes and reiterates its call for the parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention 1949 to fulfill their obligations under Common Article 1; i.e., to respect and to ensure respect for the Convention in all circumstances, and their obligation under Article 146 to prosecute persons alleged to commit grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention.  These grave breaches constitute war crimes under Article 147 of the same Convention and Article 85 of Protocol I Additional to the Geneva Conventions

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S LAST SERMON

last sermon PROPHET MUHAMMAD

(This Sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul Hijjah 10 A.H in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat ) Note: Found on the Net, but without source or copyright information. Please contact halsall@muray.fordham.edu if you have information
“O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I don’t know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you carefully and TAKE THIS WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. ALLAH has forbidden you to take usury (Interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived…

Beware of Satan, for your safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have right over you. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and comitted helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to commit adultery.

O People, listen to me in earnest, whorship ALLAH, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadhan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. You know that every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. YOU ARE ALL EQUAL. NOBODY HAS SUPERIORITY OVER OTHER EXCEPT BY PIETY AND GOOD ACTION.

Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand my words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QUR’AN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me direcly. BE MY WITNESS O ALLAH THAT I HAVE CONVEYED YOUR MESSAGE TO YOUR PEOPLE.”

TV–MIND CONTROL: LARGE SEGMENTS OF AMERICAN PUBLIC WALKING AROUND IN A HYPNOTIC TRANCE

NOVANEWS

TV – Mind Control: Large Segments of American Public Literally Walking around in a Hypnotic Trance

TV: Your Mind. Controlled: Are large segments of the American public literally walking around in a hypnotic trance?

mind control

Michael Snyder, of The American Dream, wrote this almost two years ago:

“Our society is rapidly coming apart at the seams and people are seriously starting to lose it… Way too many Americans seem to be losing all sense of what is right and what is wrong. Way too many Americans seem to be losing all sense of what it means to treat others with dignity and respect… It is almost as if some sort of mental illness is spreading throughout our society that is expressing itself in thousands of different ways. We are seeing anger, rage, malice and brutality rise to very dangerous levels. Our population has become way too greedy, proud, selfish and hateful. America is on a very dangerous road and we need to wake up.”
A general sense of apathy is spreading through the populace like a cancer and it begs the question: even if we wanted to “wake up,” could we?

According to last year’s Nielsen report, the average American over the age of two years old watches more than 34 hours of television per week, plus at least three more hours of taped programming. The report also noted that the amount of time we spend watching television increases as we get older.

Back in 1969, a man named Herbert Krugman conducted a series of experiments regarding the effect of television on a person’s brainwaves. What he found was pretty startling:

“Krugman monitored a person through many trials and found that in less than one minute of television viewing, the person’s brainwaves switched from Beta waves — brainwaves associated with active, logical thought — to primarily Alpha waves. When the subject stopped watching television and began reading a magazine, the brainwaves reverted to Beta waves.”

‘Beta’ is considered a normal, awake state, while ‘Alpha’ waves are experienced in a deep relaxation or ‘daydreaming’ state. When in the Alpha state, a person is subjected to a passive learning experience with the right side of the brain at the wheel, leaving critical thinking skills behind.

Type ‘television’ and ‘low vibrational energy’ into a search engine, and it’ll quickly return the fact that watching a lot of TV is like undressing your mind and submerging it into a bath of negative energy. TV effectively numbs the left side of your brain and renders you helpless to your right brain which is incapable of decoding and critically analyzing the information being presented to you. Essentially, you go on ‘auto-pilot’.

Thus, everyone is put into a hypnotic state that author Wes Moore says, “produces highly functional, mobile ‘bio-survival robots.’” There’s a reason he dubbed television an “opiate of the masses“.

TV programs us. We tune in, drop out and stop asking questions.

Some of Krugman’s more interesting conclusions from his 1969 TV brainwave research include:

“Internal Alpha responses can be stimulated by appropriate external rhythms or frequencies.”

“The time may come when the mass media may create special programs to help people modify certain attitudes or behavior.”

“This means that passively learned material has an important ‘advantage’ which some have also associated with so called subliminal perception, extrasensory perception, or hypnotism.”

“For early education there may be an opportunity to accept the fact that many children fidget in class, and that this interference with their attention is not to be blamed on parents, teachers, or the child. Mild drugging of these children, or training in relaxation through Alpha driving, may be dramatically helpful to their educational achievement.” [Emphasis Added]

“For public television there may be an opportunity to accept without shame the fact that it has taught violence to an entire generation. The clear store of television violence is not that a new generation is more violent but that the new generation knows more violence. The political consequences of this may yet be what some would call ‘good’ (e.g., pacifist).” [Emphasis Added]

“It is possible that the relaxed and successful character of passive learning can be enhanced by the artificial induction of Alpha rhythm, this with the aid of a flickering light.” [Emphasis Added]

Mind-Control-And-The-New-World-Order-The-Ultimate-Non-Lethal-Weapon
Your brain on TV, ladies and gentlemen. It’s a basic form of mind control.

The bulk of Krugman’s research sounds eerily reminiscent of the concept of ‘sleep-learning’ (also known as sleep-teaching or hypnopaedia) — literally teaching someone something as they sleep — as portrayed in Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel Brave New World.

Interestingly, two scientists were able to debunk sleep-learning on its face in 1956, unless Alpha waves were involved:

“Researchers concluded that learning during sleep was ‘impractical and probably impossible.’ They reported that stimulus material presented during sleep was not recalled later when the subject awoke unless alpha wave activity occurred at the same time the stimulus material was given.”

It should be noted that Krugman has spent many decades at General Electric (GE) headquarters as corporate manager of public-opinion research, a job he took in 1967. The company had a few good reasons to get excited by Krugman’s findings. After all, GE founded the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in 1919, and a few years later RCA would found the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in 1926. GE also bought a majority share of Universal Pictures in 2004.

GE also has extensive ties to the military-industrial complex, resulting in propaganda campaigns straight from it’s child company NBC. Here’s just one example:

“NBC’s owner General Electric designed, manufactured or supplied parts or maintenance for nearly every major weapon system used by the U.S. during the Gulf War… In other words, when correspondents and paid consultants on NBC television praised the performance of U.S. weapons, they were extolling equipment made by GE, the corporation that pays their salaries.”

In other words, there’s a very lucrative reason to sell war to the masses… and war, by far, is not the only thing the TV sells us.

Krugman also wrote “The Impact of Television Advertising: Learning without Involvement,” in which he stated that people exposed to what they have seen on television never forget these images:

“There is a myth in the advertising world that viewers will forget your message if you don’t repeat your advertising often enough. It is this myth that supports many large advertising expenditures… I would rather say the public comes closer to forgetting nothing they have seen on TV. They just ‘put it out of their minds’ until and unless it has some use… and [then] the response to the commercial continues.” [Emphasis Added]

So once you have experienced something on television, your brain is effectively desensitized to it and you remember what you have seen forever.

1953 MKUltra experiment record

propaganda works tv_media_giants (1)

Seems rife for abuse by anyone who desires to peddle propaganda, doesn’t it?

Nothing about what I have written makes me feel anymore comfortable about the fact that our government spent billions subsidizing the switchover from analog to digital broadcasting, a move that was meant to take full effect across the nation in 2009. (TheUnited Kingdom followed suit in 2010, and so did Canada in 2011.)

You know, because the government that is wholesale spying on us through the National Security Administration and other alphabet organizations cares so much about our television’s picture quality.

This is, after all, the same government who designed a despicable covert mind control research program called MKUltra that began after World War II which the Central Intelligence Agency admitted to on record but claims to have stopped in 1973. The program dealt in trauma-based mind control (The ‘MK’ stands for ‘mind kontrolle’ in German).

Krugman wrote yet another article in 2000, “Memory Without Recall, Exposure Without Perception” where he posited:

“I suspect that the classes are moving apart psychologically and culturally. Even if incomes were mandated to be equal, the left-brain people and the right-brain people have different communication patterns. We may, therefore, split into two cultures, two increasingly separate societies.”

Some people cannot seem to break their trance, break their programming. They readily believe whatever the mainstream media tells them — a media beholden to the establishment agenda — without critical analysis and act accordingly. The breakdown appears to go beyond economic or political factors, but something effecting the very fabric of society itself.

Others have ‘broken their programming’, realized something is very very wrong here, and are asking questions. Think about what’s going on in our country today and ask yourself: “What the hell happened?”

“As real-life experience is increasingly replaced by the mediated ‘experience’ of television-viewing, it becomes easy for politicians and market-researchers of all sorts to rely on a base of mediated mass experience that can be evoked by appropriate triggers. The TV ‘world’ becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: the mass mind takes shape, its participants acting according to media-derived impulses and believing them to be their own personal volition arising out of their own desires and needs. In such a situation, whoever controls the screen controls the future, the past, and the present.” (Nelson, The Perfect Machine, p. 82)

Zio-Nazi lobbying U.S., EU to support Egypt’s military government

NOVANEWS

Jewish Journal

The Israeli government is pressing its efforts to convince the United States and the European Union to support the military-backed government in Egypt.

The New York Times reported late Sunday that Israeli ambassadors in Washington and the European capitals will lobby foreign ministers, and that Israeli leaders will urge diplomats to see the Israeli viewpoint that the Egyptian military will prevent a further deterioration of the situation in Cairo.

The newspaper cited an unnamed “senior Israeli official involved in the effort.”

“If you insist on big principles, then you will miss the essential — the essential being putting Egypt back on track at whatever cost,” the official told the Times. “First, save what you can, and then deal with democracy and freedom and so on. At this point it’s army or anarchy.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered government officials to refrain from publicly discussing the situation in Egypt.

Israel reportedly has been lobbying American officials hard to sustain the annual $1.5 billion in U.S. aid to Egypt. President Obama has threatened to withhold the aid over a violent government crackdown on demonstrations in support of ousted President Mohamed Morsi that has resulted in more than 800 deaths since last week.

Last week, Obama canceled a planned joint military exercise with Egypt over the bloodshed.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who led the military coup that ousted Morsi, developed close ties with Israel when he headed Egypt’s military intelligence, according to the Times, and has remained in close contact with Israel throughout the recent violence and bloodshed.

Dangerous Operation at Fukushima’s Reactor No. 4 Could Ignite “Atomic Chain Reaction”

NOVANEWS

Attempt to remove fuel rods from crippled building could cause “unprecedented” disaster

By Jacob Chamberlain

Threatening to trigger a new—and possibly more devastating—nuclear disaster than the original or ongoing one at the Fukishima plant in Japan, a risky plan to remove fuel rods from a damaged reactor building could unleash an “unprecedented” level of radiation, according to experts, if things go wrong.

According to reporting by Reuters, the radioactive material within the fuel rods slated for removal are equivalent to 14,000 times the amount released in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the plan to move them “has never been attempted before on this scale.”

The 400 tons of highly irradiated spent fuel and other nuclear materials will be taken from the crippled building and moved to a safer location, but the manner of the operation should be put in serious doubt, say the experts.

“They are going to have difficulty in removing a significant number of the rods,” said Arnie Gundersen, a veteran U.S. nuclear engineer and director of Fairewinds Energy Education. The fuel rods are being stored in a cooling pool, but if a reaction begins, Gundersen expressed serious concern to Reutersabout the company’s ability to respond.

“To jump to the conclusion that it is going to work just fine,” said Gundersen, “is quite a leap of logic.”

“There is a risk of an inadvertent criticality if the bundles are distorted and get too close to each other,” Gundersen continued.

“The problem with a fuel pool criticality is that you can’t stop it. There are no control rods to control it,” he said. “The spent fuel pool cooling system is designed only to remove decay heat, not heat from an ongoing nuclear reaction.”

Reuters also quoted from a recent independent report which stated, a “full release from the Unit-4 spent fuel pool, without any containment or control, could cause by far the most serious radiological disaster to date.”

The site’s operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has been mired in crisis ever since an earthquake and tsunami severely damaged the plant 2011. Most recently it was discovered that as much as 300 tons of “highly radioactive water” has been pouring into the Pacific Ocean on a daily basis from the plant, with no promising remedy offered by either the plant’s owner TEPCO or the Japanese government.

Tunisian activist quits Femen calling it ‘Islamophobic’ and financed by ‘shady’ money

NOVANEWS

Amina Sboui, who left the Ukrainian feminist group Femen

‘You have to respect the religion of others,’ says feminist Amina Sboui who was jailed in Tunisia for nude photos; Femen hits back:’[Sboui] betraying the thousands of women.’

Haaretz

The 19-year-old, who spent more than two months in prison for tagging the wall of a cemetery with the word “Femen,” said she was shocked by some of the protests held by Femen, three of whose members spent a month in jail in Tunisia over a topless protest held in solidarity.

Sboui told the Huffington Post Maghreb news site: “I did not approve of the protest where the girls cried ‘Amina Akbar, Femen Akbar’ in front of the Tunisian embassy in France, or when they burnt the Tawheed (Salafist) flag in front of the Paris mosque.”

“You have to respect the religion of others,” she added, accusing Femen of being “Islamophobic” and of being financed by “shady money.”

Femen leader Inna Shevchenko hit back, accusing Sboui of “betraying the thousands of women in several countries who undressed to support her during the Free Amina campaign.”

The Paris-based Shevchenko told French daily Liberation: “It’s thanks to this campaign that Amina is out of prison.”

But Sboui told the Huffington Post that some of Femen’s actions had “aggravated” her case.

Sboui shot to fame when she posted a topless photograph of herself on Facebook in March, with the words “My body belongs to me, and is not the source of anyone’s honor” scrawled across her chest – a message aimed at Tunisia’s ruling Islamists.

Her action, which was condemned as “un-Tunisian,” was seen as a factor behind her subsequent imprisonment.

On the day of her first court appearance in May, three Femen activists – one German and two French – held a topless protest in Tunis to demand her release.

Convicted of public indecency and offending public morals, the activists were handed four-month prison terms that were suspended on appeal.

Sboui was released on parole on August 1.

She remains charged with desecrating a cemetery. Contrary to Femen’s view that prison had “broken” her, she remains committed to radical protest.

In a new topless photograph released a few days ago, she is seen smoking a cigarette that is poised to light a Molotov cocktail, with the anarchist sign on her shoulder and the slogan “We don’t need your dimocracy [sic]” written across her chest.

Sboui told the Huffington Post she was considering joining a feminist anarchist group, Feminism Attack.

“For me the problem in Tunisia is not the (Islamist) Ennahda party or the person of (Ennahda leader) Rachid Ghannouchi. The problem is the whole system,” she said.

That problem, she said, was not about “being able to wear a mini-skirt here – I know I can always do that – but that tomorrow a woman can become president of the republic, that in rural areas women are not those who suffer the most.”

‘We’re like Switzerland — we don’t interfere,’ says I$rahelli minister

Yuval Steinitz denies claim that I$raHell is seeking support for Egypt’s military; cool on peace talks, he says I$raHell just couldn’t say no to Kerry

Times of Israel

A cabinet minister with close ties to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied any Israeli involvement in the uprisings occurring in its neighboring countries, rejecting reports this week that have claimed Jerusalem is lobbying Western governments to continue supporting the Egyptian military despite its bloody crackdown on Islamist protesters.

“Our official policy is not to interfere. And up until today, this policy served us very well. The entire Middle East is turbulent and stormy, and we look like Switzerland,” International Relations and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz told The Times of Israel. “Israel looks more or less like Switzerland during World War II, when all of Europe burned and Switzerland stayed neutral. [Except] we’re not Switzerland, [because] there is enmity against us in this Middle East.”

The New York Times on Sunday quoted an unnamed senior Israeli official saying that Jerusalem planned to intensify its effort to lobby the US and European leaders to keep supporting the Egyptian army, since it is the only entity that could put that country “back on track.” On Monday, furthermore, an unnamed senior Israeli official told the Wall Street Journal that if the US did not back the Egyptian military, the prospects of success in ongoing Israeli-Palestinian peace talks would be severely undermined.

‘The prime minister’s policy proved itself: a policy that says we’re not interfering unless there is a direct threat to our security’
Netanyahu’s office on Tuesday refused comment on both reports. Steinitz, who spoke to The Times of Israel on Monday, before the Wall Street Journal report appeared, said it was his understanding that the government had denied any involvement in the current turmoil in Egypt, and for that matter in any other region affected by the Arab Spring, and that Netanyahu was maintaining a policy of non-involvement wherever possible.

“The prime minister’s policy proved itself: a policy that says we’re not interfering unless there is a direct threat to our security — if we’re being shot at or if there are attempts to transfer sophisticated and strategically important weapons to terrorist organizations,” he said. This was an apparent reference to reports of Israeli airstrikes in recent months — never confirmed by Israel — that destroyed weapon convoys en route via Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon. “Beyond that we’re not interfering, and it’s good that way.”

Steinitz, who has been warning for more than a decade about the dangers of Egypt falling into the hands of Islamist extremists, also briefly referred to the deteriorating security situation in the Sinai Peninsula and several incidents of Syrian fire into Israel across the Golan Heights. “Up until now we succeeded in protecting ourselves and to contain all this, staying out of this Arab Spring that is turning into a very stormy fall around us.”

In the interview, held in his office on the eighth floor of the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, Steinitz expressed profound pessimism regarding the recently resumed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, saying that Jerusalem only agreed to return to the negotiating table because of American pressure.

“I try to be optimistic but I’m quite skeptical,” Steinitz said. He listed elements of a final-status agreement to which he believes the Palestinian side is unlikely to agree, including a united Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, a recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, and an renunciation of the “right of return” for Palestinian refugees and their descendants to Israel. “All these issues are mandatory,” said Steinitz, a close Netanyahu ally who is also minister of intelligence but is not a member of the security cabinet.

The fact that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas controls only the West Bank, while Gaza is ruled by Hamas, is extremely problematic, he said. “If [Abbas] signs [a peace treaty], how much is this piece of paper worth?” he asked. “Peace with Palestinians in the West Bank but war with the Palestinians in Gaza is “not at all a stable situation,” he added.

But perhaps the biggest stumbling block on the way to an agreement is Palestinian incitement against Israel, according to the minister, who is generally considered one of the more moderate members of Netanyahu’s Likud Knesset faction (and along with Tzachi Hanegbi is the only Likud MK to support the prime minister’s endorsement in principle of Palestinian statehood). “We’re talking peace, and hold festivals of peace in the US and the entire world, and at the same time the very same Abu Mazen educates his people to destroy the State of Israel,” he said, using Abbas’s nom de guerre.

The “central direction” of PA education and media is that “sooner or later we need to destroy Israel and wipe out or expel the Jews,” asserted Steinitz, whose Strategic Affairs Ministry is tasked with surveying Palestinian incitement against Israel.

Asked why the Netanyahu government agreed to free Palestinian terrorists to enable the peace talks to restart if they have little chance of succeeding, Steinitz said that “the process is indeed problematic, but I think that overall it is the right thing to do. We couldn’t say no to the Americans in this situation.”

(For their part, the Palestinians would not have returned to the negotiating table were it not for an American letter of assurances guaranteeing their main negotiating preconditions, the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said on Tuesday.)

The Palestinians’ commitment to negotiate for nine months, during which they may not turn to the United Nations or take other unilateral steps aimed at advancing statehood, “is very important” to Israel, Steinitz said. Challenged with the assumption that this merely buys Israel some time, because Abbas could resume the process of unilaterally seeking international recognition of a Palestinian state steps as soon as the talks collapse, the minister replied: “I don’t know. But time is money. In this sensitive time it’s the right thing to do.”

The current peace negotiations, which are continuing in the region, come with both opportunities and risks, Steinitz said. If the talks were to break down, an interim agreement of some sort was possible but a resurgence of violence could also not be excluded. Therefore, he said, it was preferable “not to celebrate peace festivals” while the process is ongoing.

“I hope that the festival in Washington, with the statements and the festive dinner, will not happen again, because I don’t think this is beneficial,” he said, referring to a July 30 press conference at which US Secretary of State John Kerry announced the resumption of talks. During the press conference, which was preceded by an Iftar dinner attended by senior Israeli and Palestinian negotiators, Kerry said that all sides involved “believe that we could get there” — to an end-of-conflict accord in nine months of talks.

“We shouldn’t raise expectations,” Steinitz said. “We need to sit and see if it’ll be possible to advance.”

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims Ankara has proof Israel was behind the July 3 military “coup” that toppled Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, Turkish media report.

Erdogan said the West was beginning to redefine democracy as a process that is not solely determined at the ballot box, although the poll represents “the people’s will.”

This is what has been implemented in Egypt. Who is behind this? Israel. We have evidence,” Erdogan said, as quoted by the Hurriyet daily, during a meeting with provincial chairs of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Erdogan spoke of a meeting between Turkey’s justice minister and a “Jewish” intellectual in France before Egypt’s 2011 elections.

“The Muslim Brotherhood will not be in power even if they win the elections. Because democracy is not the ballot box’: This is what [the intellectual] said at that time,” the PM continued.

Erdogan did not clarify what connection the unidentified intellectual had to the Israeli government or how his alleged opinion proved Israel played any part in the recent ouster of Morsi.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry declined to respond to Erdogan’s accusation. “This is a statement well worth not commenting on,” said ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor.

In March, Israel attempted rapprochement with Turkey after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Erdogan to apologize for the 2010 Gaza flotilla raid that resulted in the deaths of eight Turks and one Turkish-American.

Erdogan accepted the apology and both sides agreed to carry out further discussions. The PM, however, said that normalization of bilateral ties would take time, insinuating that Turkey wanted to ensure victims of the raid were compensated and that Israel remained committed to easing the restriction of goods to Gaza before restoring relations.

The Turkish PM, an outspoken supporter of Morsi and his Islamist government, lashed out at the West for failing to act in light of last week’s bloody crackdown against Muslim Brotherhood supporters. Having previously condemned the coup, Erdogan insisted that Morsi be reinstated through a democratic process.

Erdogan’s ruling AKP, which has Islamic roots, had developed ties with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and aimed to boost Turkey’s regional clout by bolstering its relationship with the North African state.

NOVANEWS

Israel is urging the West to stick by Egypt’s army in its confrontation with the Muslim Brotherhood, quietly echoing warnings by U.S. regional ally Saudi Arabia against putting pressure on the military-backed government.

“Israel shares its views with the U.S. and some EU (European Union) countries, and those views are to give priority to restoring stability,” a senior Israeli official said on Monday.

“And like it or not, the army is the only player that can restore law and order (in Egypt).”

With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet instructed by him to avoid public comment about turmoil in Egypt, where about 850 people, including 70 police and soldiers, have been killed in nearly a week of violence, government officials have been speaking, anonymously, about Israel’s concerns.

Among them is any sign of weakened support for an Egyptian military that maintained close security ties with Israel even during the year-long rule of President Mohamed Mursi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader deposed by the army on July 3 after huge protests against him.

Responding to the mounting death toll on Egypt, the United States has postponed delivery of four F-16 fighters and scrapped a joint military exercise with the Egyptian armed forces, but has not withheld $1.55 billion in annual aid.

That decision, one Israeli official said, “raised eyebrows” in Israel, which signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 that has been underpinned by a working relationship between the armed forces of both countries.

But other officials insisted there was no formal Israeli lobbying drive in Washington to dissuade President Barack Obama from taking any stronger measures to try to curb the Egyptian military crackdown.

“When we speak (to U.S. officials), we clearly say what we think. It doesn’t mean there is a campaign. We share our views and analysis,” one official said.

“With what other neighbor of Egypt can they speak about this? We are the only nation they can speak to what’s right on the border; obviously there’s a lot to exchange.”

Israel, hoping to preserve its peace treaty with Egypt, was muted in its response to Mursi’s election as president a year ago after autocrat Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, Netanyahu was vocal in the past about his fears of an Islamist takeover in Egypt.

Such a scenario, he said in 2011, represented a “tremendous threat” to Egyptian-Israeli cooperation.

Elsewhere in the region, Saudi Arabia has publicly cautioned the West against measures aimed at reining in the military in its efforts to curb the Muslim Brotherhood.

“We will not achieve anything through threats,” Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, told reporters in Paris on Sunday ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels to review the 28-nation bloc’s Egyptian policy.

Israel sees Egypt’s armed forces as critical in confronting Islamist fundamentalism on a national level and dealing with attacks by Islamist militants in the Sinai Peninsula, which has a long desert border with the Jewish state.

SINAI ATTACKS

Deepening Israel’s worries about increasing lawlessness on its doorstep, suspected Islamist gunmen killed at least 24 Egyptian policemen in an ambush in Sinai on Monday.

Just last week, Israel’s Red Sea resort of Eilat, on the border with Sinai, was targeted by a rocket apparently fired by Islamist militants. It was shot down by an Israeli missile shield.

Tzachi Hanegbi, a legislator from Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party and a confidant of the prime minister, said it was also in Washington’s strategic interest to maintain good relations with Egypt’s leaders.

“Every year, Egypt gets 1.5 billion dollars, mainly in military aid. The U.S. military … gets preferential treatment for passage in the Suez Canal and in Egyptian air space. All these things have greatly assisted the United States in its operations in the Middle East,” he told Army Radio on Sunday.

Hanegbi, a member of parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said that while Washington needed to voice its displeasure over bloodshed in Egypt, “the paramount U.S. interest is not to take steps from which there is no way back”.
