The unspoken assumption behind the U.S. war plans against Syria

By Brian Becker, National Coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition

The criminal attack being planned against Syria is based on lies. They are not hard to expose.

The Syrian government was given a formal request on Saturday, Aug. 24 to grant access to a United Nations team of inspectors to the town in the outskirts of Damascus to determine if chemical weapons had been used. The Syrian government granted permission the very next day, Sunday, Aug. 25.

Obama administration officials then immediately declared that the inspections no longer mattered because the Syrian government had delayed UN weapons inspectors’ access to the site. In fact, top U.S.  officials called UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon on Aug. 25 (when Syria agreed that the inspectors could visit) demanding that he cancel the UN weapons inspections because they “were pointless.” (Wall Street Journal, Aug. 26)

The claim against Syria is ludicrous. The Syrian government would not have an interest in using chemical weapons knowing that it would be the trigger for NATO military intervention. The government was winning the war. The foreign-backed armed rebel groups could only win the war if the U.S. and/or NATO intervened directly.

Every imperialist attack and every imperialist-inspired regime change strategy requires a pretext and a public rationale. There needs to be a noble cause to justify the aggression. Since it is the 21st century rather than the 19th century, the politicians of western capitalism have to conceal and mask their predatory aims as they routinely bomb and kill people in the Middle East, Asia and Africa who resist allowing their lands and resources to fall under the domination of western corporations, banks and business interests.

“Public opinion” required a humanitarian motive for the bombing of Afghanistan in 2001, Iraq in 2003, Libya in 2011 and Syria in 2013.

The greatest purveyors of violence in the world present themselves as the greatest purveyors of humanitarian interests in the world.

Syria is not threatening the United States nor is anyone in the Obama administration suggesting such a threat exists. Thus, the planned military strikes against Syria are a violation of the UN Charter and international law.

The UN Charter and self-defense

The Obama administration is playing a dangerous game, escalating a war that could have devastating regional and global consequences.

The United States and Syria are both members of the United Nations and signatories to the UN Charter.

The UN Charter makes it illegal for one member nation to attack another except in the case of self-defense.

The Obama administration’s calculations on why it can and should bomb Syria are not premised on the idea of “legality” but rather power and power alone. They believe that Syria is so small and vulnerable that it will not be able to defend itself or retaliate against U.S. targets.

But the UN’s Article 51, Chapter VII makes clear that Syria would have such rights in the event of an unprovoked armed attack: “Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.” (Article 51, Chapter VII).

Syria’s presumed inability to retaliate is the unspoken assumption of the U.S. war planners and their cheerleaders in the mass media. War made easy!

The potential implications of an unprovoked attack on Syria are not even mentioned. The Obama administration implicitly promises the American people that only Syrians will bleed in this new “war.” With this promise they hope that the people of the United States will not rise up against the government that commits war crimes in their name.

During the next days people are going into the streets throughout the United States to say NO to another bombing campaign in the Middle East. Join and organize these demonstrations. The time to act is right now!

Bradley Manning – The Last Nail in the Coffin of the American Democracy

It was a sad day when we all heard about the sentencing of Bradley Manning. A 25 years old man who has followed his moral obligations and exposed the horrendous war crimes committed by the American soldiers in Iraq, will spend 35 years behind bars.

By Sergey Baranov

One would think that instead, Bradley Manning should be rewarded a Nobel Peace Prize ( the same one Barack Obama has recently received, even though, in my opinion, the President deserves it less) and praised as a hero, while becoming a prosecution witness against the helicopter pilots who should be brought up on murder charges for shooting and killing civilians in Iraq. (see full version here) (1)

‘’Light ‘em all up. Come on, fire! (Machine gun fire) ‘’Keep shooting. ( Machine gun fire) ‘’Keep shooting’’ (Machine gun fire) ‘’Bunch of bodies laying there’’ ‘’Alright, we got about 8 individuals’’ ‘’Yeah, we got one guy crawling around down there’’. We’re shooting some more. ‘’Yea.. you shoot I’ll talk.. ‘’Oh yeah, look at those dead bastards’’.’’Nice’’. ‘’Nice’’. ‘’Good shooting’’. ‘’Thank you’’ ‘’We have a van that’s approaching and picking up the bodies. Can I shoot? Come on, let us shoot’’. (Machine gun). ‘’Clear. Clear’’. ‘’Oh, yeah, look at that, like thru the windshield’’. Roger, I’ve got 11 Iraqis killed and one small child wounded in the belly’’. ‘’It’s their fault for bringing their kids into a battle’’. ‘’That’s right.’’(next thing you see is a tank moving on the street crushing an Iraqi like an insect) “.. just drove over a body’’. (Laughter) ..

You’ve got to see it to believe it.

This isn’t a script for a Hollywood movie. This is actual, heartless chatting between the helicopter pilots during the shooting civilian targets. Bradley Manning felt like he must bring this and other crimes to the public attention so people would learn the truth about despicable acts of violence and atrocities being committed in the Iraq war, which was based on lies in the first place. One would think that in a just society, a sense of humanity and morality would be considered as virtues. However, in reality, Manning was convicted for being a virtuous man and sent to prison essentially for life, while those who are responsible for collateral murder are still walking free.

This military trial is especially disturbing in the light of the latest news about the Department of Justice requesting that George W. Bush, Richard “Dick’’ Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz ‘’be granted procedural immunity in a case alleging that they planned and waged the Iraq War in violation of international law’’. (2) An immunity from justice, so to speak.

So where is this WMD? (3) It has been 10 long years of looking for it. ‘’Not here, not there, it’s got to be somewhere’’ –  G.W. Bush have jested on March 24, 2004 at the Washington Hilton for the annual Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association Dinner. (4),(5)

But according to two former senior CIA officers, Bush knew that Saddam did not have weapons of mass destruction.(6) However, it didn’t stop him from taking the nation to yet another war.

Richard ‘’Dick’’Cheney, Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, under President George W. Bush, was also supporting the invasion of Iraq  (7). We learned later, that Halliburton gets awarded a 7 billion contract to rebuild Iraq, the company of which Dick Cheney was a chairman and CEO from 1995 to 2000 and the only company which was allowed to bid. (8)(9)

But besides the oil fields, there was a big demand for weapons to be supplied for endless war.

However, there was another business flourishing those days – trafficking of young women and children, a scandal erupted after the Dyncorp, a private military contractor, was exposed. (10)

Even more disturbing news came out about the Pentagon child porn scandal in 2006. The federal investigation operated under the code name “Operation Flicker” has identified more than 5,200 individuals who had subscribed to child pornography websites providing their military email addresses. However, 1,700 of those suspects were never investigated. Eventually, the investigation was halted without making big news. Senator Charles Grassley received a letter from Pentagon Inspector General Gordon Heddell saying that child pornography was “not one of DCIS’ (Defense Criminal Investigative Service) investigative priorities.”(11),(12).

Well, if investigating your employees who are interested in watching kids as young as 3 years old are getting raped is not a priority for the employer, then what kind of employer is it and what are his priorities? Who else in the world would like to keep sick perverts on its staff? And who would to explain how a 25 year boy, Bradley Manning, armed only with truth and a sense of justice is guiltier or is more dangerous to society than pedophiles with nukes? And if he isn’t, why he is the one who has been sent to prison?

Congressional Vacation Period Opportune, I$raHell Now at Risk of Strike

A chunk of the American population questions if the U.S. funded rebel chemical attack was a good idea as Israel is now at risk.

WASHINGTON — The Obama Administration has managed to pull off another great heist on the American people with the formulation of a pre-determined and rather organized plan to constitute a ‘U.N. legal’ attack on Syria is in effect.

And to top it off, what perfect timing for a congressional “summer vacation”. reported, “Members of Congress are on summer vacation, ignoring their 15 percent approval rating like students who flunked remedial math might ignore their report cards. If House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wanted to boost public approval of Congress, they would urge the president to call a special session so they could vote on military action against Syria.”[2]

However the absence of congress is not all we need to be worried about.

It was recently reported that Hossein Sheikholeslam, the Director-General of the parliament for International Affairs stated Monday, “the Zionist regime will be the first victim of a military attack on Syria”[1], making some question whether the U.S. sponsored rebel chemical attack on Syria was truly a good idea.

The puppet masters behind the curtain, the ones truly in control of the Obama Administration are playing with fire.

PCHR Calls for Investigating Man’s Death during Fire Exchange between Gunmen and Security Officers in ‘Askar Refugee Camp, East of Nablus

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) calls upon the Attorney General’s office to seriously investigate the death of a Palestinian by a live bullet to the head during an exchange of fire between members of the Palestinian Preventive Security Service (PSS) and 3 gunmen in ‘Askar refugee camp, east of Nablus in the northern West Bank, which was followed by destruction of private and public property.

According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 19:45 on Tuesday, 28 August 2013, a number of PSS officers traveling in a civilian vehicle arrived in ‘Askar refugee camp, east of Nablus, to arrest a wanted person.  Once the wanted person noticed the security officers on the main road in the camp, he and another two gunmen fired at them, and the security officers returned fire.  During the exchange of fire, Amjad Falah ‘Ouda, 40, a carpenter who was in his workshop at the main road, was killed by a live bullet to the head.

Soon after, dozens of young men set fire to a guardroom of the Palestinian National Security Forces in the Industrial School near the camp, and a guardroom of the Palestinian police near Balata refugee camp.  Other young men destroyed traffic lights, an ATM of Cairo-Amman Bank in Amman Street, and an ATM of Bank of Palestine at al-Ghawi intersection between ‘Askar and Balata refugee camps.  The protestors also set fire to the medical compound of the Palestinian security medical services in ‘Askar refugee camp.  In Rafidya Hospital, where ‘Ouda’s body was transferred, a number of young men from ‘Askar refugee camp damaged a number of cars near the hospital and set fire to a security vehicle.  They also threw stones at security officers. Moreover, dozens of young men closed the entrance of al-Far’a refugee camp, south of Tubas, on Tubas-Nablus road, and set fire to rubber tires in protest against ‘Ouda’s death.

PCHR condemns ‘Ouda’s killing and calls upon the Attorney General’s office to investigate the circumstances of his death, and subsequent attacks against private and public property and bring the perpetrators before justice.  PCHR confirms its position rejecting any attacks against private and public property.

Obama constituency overwhelmingly supports war with Syria

Obama constituency overwhelmingly supports war with SyriaDespite a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing that only 9% of Americans support military intervention in Syria, the White House today assured the public that a more recent and reliable poll leaves no doubt that the President’s constituency favors war.

The poll was conducted by Defense Industries Systems Information, Inc. (DIS Information). It shows that 99.9% prefer increased U.S. military intervention. The poll has a .1% margin of error. DIS Information spokesperson Lyon Daly spoke to this reporter about the polling methodology and findings.

RIGHT: Obama supporters discuss Syria options.

Lyon Daly: We use the same scientific polling methods as Reuters/Ipsos, but our job is to come up with results that support what our clients and the President want to hear without compromising quality. It’s very similar to the way the press provides facts without informing the public, and we even provide many such facts.

Barb Weir: How do you do this and still maintain methodological integrity?

Lyon Daly: The Reuters/Ipsos poll used all Americans as its base, whereas we used all constituents. Elected officials are much more likely to listen to their constituents than to random Americans.

Barb Weir: Who are these constituents? Can you provide us with a few subjects to interview?

Lyon Daly: Of course. Here is a short list, and we can provide more, if you like:

General Atomics

Jabhat al-Nusra Friends of al-Qaeda

Halliburton Company

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)

Kellogg, Brown and Root, Inc.

Saudi Arabian King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz al-Saud

Northrop Grumman Corporation

Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani

Barb Weir: But Mr. Daly, these are corporations, the Israel lobby, a terrorist organization and Arab monarchs!

Lyon Daly: Of course, Ms. Weir. As I told you, we polled the President’s constituency, not the American publi

Aoun Urges Change in Methods of ‘Combating Terrorism’ in Lebanon

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun on Tuesday called for a change in the methods of “combating terrorism” in the country, slamming what he called the “chaos” that characterizes the relations among the various security agencies. “Everyone knows that we had warned against the entry of Syrians and said that they must be registered because we can’t host people whose political affiliations we don’t know, even if they come from a neighboring country,” Aoun said after the weekly meeting of the Change and Reform bloc in Rabiyeh. “We also called for controlling the border and the illegitimate border crossings, but the survey (of refugees) and the controlling of the border and crossings did not happen and our calls fell on the deaf ears of the security officials,” Aoun added. He noted that the number of Syrian refugees has swollen to more than one million “and our ministers proposed plans to reach a solution that guarantees their return to their country.”
Aoun recalled that he had told premier Najib Miqati “countless times” that it is unacceptable to “keep 400,000 civilians in Tripoli under the mercy of 400 gunmen.” Commenting on the latest audio message released by Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir, Aoun said the fugitive Islamist cleric hinted that “no region will remain immune to attacks in the vein of what happened in Tripoli and Dahieh.” “We will be targeted and we are not better than the others citizens. Had there not been conspiracies involving domestic parties, security measures would have accompanied the escalation on the border, but unfortunately the ‘occupied minds’ cannot decide anything unless it serves the interest of the occupier,” Aoun added. [[[[“Terrorists and Takfiris begin small,
just like plants, before they grow bigger and the same can be said about the terrorist Takfiri cells, but state officials are saying that they can’t do anything,” he lamented. “We had stressed the need to address terrorism and terrorists, who find a safe haven in society which offers them a cover and rejects any attempt to capture them,” the FPM leader went on to say.]]]] Aoun said that he had noted around the national dialogue table that “confronting such acts requires equipment and accurate coordination among all security agencies.” “We also said that security incidents between the army and some Palestinian organizations and some Palestinians spark concern among citizens, who fear that Palestinians might become a party in the domestic conflict,” he added. [[[Aoun warned that “militias jeopardize the state’s stability and its ability to control the situations, knowing that these arms can’t be compared to the disciplined arms of the resistance.”]]]] Separately, the FPM leader said there are two urgent oil decrees that were submitted to the cabinet before its resignation “and we don’t understand why they have not been signed.” “There are political and personal reasons,” Aoun charged. “Some parties do not like the energy minister … and who can prevent the firms from withdrawing their bids should the signature be delayed further?” he warned.
“It is unacceptable to tamper with our credibility towards the international community, especially in the issue of oil, and we know that Israel does not want Lebanon to extract its oil and wants to monopolize the market for a long period ranging from 20 to 30 years,” Aoun added. He noted that negligence and delay in signing the two decrees “serves Israel’s interest.” “Who is responsible for convening the cabinet? The issue is urgent,” he stressed. “We committed ourselves to the terms and conditions and to a cabinet resolution promising that they will be issued on time. May God curse those who delay them, because they would be taking part in the conspiracy,” added Aoun.

Syrian Kurdish leader says Assad not to blame for attack

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would not be “so stupid” as to use chemical weapons close to Damascus, the leader of the country’s largest Kurdish group said. Saleh Muslim, head of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), said he doubted the Syrian president would resort to using such weapons when he felt he had the upper hand in the country’s civil war. He suggested last Wednesday’s attack, which the opposition says was carried out by government forces and killed hundreds of people, was aimed at framing Assad and provoking an international reaction. Assad has denied his forces used chemical weapons.
“The regime in Syria … has chemical weapons, but they wouldn’t use them around Damascus, 5 km from the (U.N.) committee which is investigating chemical weapons. Of course they are not so stupid as to do so,” Muslim told Reuters. At the time of the incident, U.N. experts were already in Syria to investigate three previous alleged chemical attacks dating from months ago. Muslim’s PYD, which has well-armed and effective militias, has clashed with Assad’s forces as well as rebels, but has allowed both to move through its territories during the war. Some rebels and rival Kurdish groups accuse it of having been close to the state, a position Muslim disputes. He said Kurdish areas the PYD controlled were under attack from al Qaeda-linked rebels.[[[[Muslim suggested “some other sides who want to blame the Syrian regime, who want to show them as guilty and then see action” lay behind the chemical attack, which has led to speculation that Western countries will order a military response. He said that if the U.N. inspectors found evidence Assad was not behind the gassing and the rebels were, “everybody would forget it”. “Who is the side who would be punished? Are they are going to punish the Emir of Qatar or the King of Saudi Arabia, or Mr. Erdogan of Turkey?”]]]]

The launchpads were found in Ballouneh. But on August 1, two rockets fired from an area near the town of Aramoun in Aley struck locations near the presidential palace in Baabda.A rocket landed in the garden of the Freiha villa that is located near the Officers’ Club in the Baabda area.
