The Criminal Record of the Head of the Syrian National Coalition – Jarba

Posted by: Sammi Ibrahem, Sr

NEO – New Eastern Outlook

Zio-Wahhabi Ahmad Jabra

In an attempt to “settle” the Syrian crisis Washington and Riyadh has put forward a neg-otiator –the President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces Ahmad Jarba. But it seems that today there’s a few people who do remember the story of Ahmad’s rise to “prominence”. A former felon, he was detained for drugs smuggl-ing in Saudi Arabia and later transferred to Syria under convoy.  In Syria Ahmad Jabra started running disorderly houses, and later on he was hired for the assassination of runaway Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs, but instead of killing his target he chargedex-Minister for “alarming him”.

The impending rise of Ahmad-al-Jarba to national leadership is disturbing but not unexpected. It is part of a distinct pattern. The same Western powers which are still engaged in a “war on terror” are perfectly happy to use terrorists for their own ends, and promote them to power as respected statesmen, when it suits them. Then their crimes are soon forgotten. Their victims, however, who rightly expected Western help against the terrorists, are then abandoned and told to move with the tide which rapidly washes them away.

There is a long tradition of terrorists becoming respectable political leaders because somebody says so. The present government of Uruguay, popularly elected and popular, is led by former Tupumaro guerrillas, whose decades–long campaign of violence and murder was ultimately legitimised by the corruption of the self-serving regimes they fought against. More relevantly, the West has now decided it likes the people responsible for crimes such as kidnapping the British Ambassador.

Then-Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin did not attend the Middle East peace talks at Leeds Castle in the UK because he was still wanted by the British for terrorist activities, blowing up the King David Hotel (British Headquarters in the 1940s). After an agreement was eventually signed at Camp David he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Camp David is of course in the USA, and agreement was brokered by President Jimmy Carter.

In 1982 the FAN rebel movement overthrew the government of Chad, led by Goukouni Oueddei, in a coup and replaced him with its own leader, Minister of Defence Hissene Habre, the most pro-Western of Chadian political figures. Within a fortnight, Habre was being described as “President” and Goukouni as the “Libyan-backed rebel”. Habre and Goukouni had both been members of the same Libya-based resistance movement, and both their competing armies had been trained by Libya.

Police and diplomatic records show that Riyadh handed over “the suspected terrorist and killer Ahmad al-Jarba” to Damascus in 2008, apparently on charges of drug trafficking, in accordance with an extradition agreement between the Saudi and Syrian security services. Then he was considered to be “really a bad guy”. Now he is presented as the number one asset in the country, leading the National Coalition.

In Syria the Baath Party is no longer accepted as “the vanguard party” within society and the Sunni minority wants more influence. Saudi Arabia, the main player in the present crisis, is playing this card well. Saudi Arabia is a Western ally because its oil-rich rulers prefer to influence West than East and can afford to choose their own friends. But it cannot compete in political or intelligence infrastructure with the USA or EU. Join their camp, even on your own terms, you still have to play by their rules.

The role the US, Turkish and Saudi intelligence services are playing in all that is happening in Syria and the region indicates that they want to make a “Disorderly house out of the White House”. At least 20 different terrorist-aligned groups are fighting the government and each other as part of the current game plan, bound by an ever-changing pattern of fragile alliances. It is as if the intelligence agencies can’t survive without keeping the Cold War going; Syria was once within the Soviet sphere of influence, received strong military support from the former Soviet Union and Russia is involved there now, so the US and its allies have to show they are the bigger bastards.

Long tradition of Saudi involvement

Saudi involvement in Syria dates back long before the current civil war. For example, the deaths of Hisham al Badni (the PA of Khaled Meshaal, a Hamas commander), Imad Mughnyeh (Hezbollah Commander in Chief), and Muhammad Suleiman (the link man between Hezbollah, Assad and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards in Damascus have all been linked by local sources with Saudi intelligence, and thee has been no convincing rebuttal of these allegations.

A spree of murder and intimidation of members of the Syrian government is also attributed to the Saudis. In this campaign, all are at risk, including ordinary citizens who may be considered at various times to be expendable by outside entities.

Those close to the Alawi are at particular risk. This sect is considered heretical by other Moslems, and this can be used to justify any action taken against its members, whether or not it has anything to do with religion. A delicate social and political balance between Moslem sects has existed since the death of Mohammed, and the question of who is the Prophet’s rightful successor, the main cause of the various divisions within Islam, is now being used by the US, a non-Moslem country, to upset this balance and provoke fear and division.

Saudi Arabia sees itself as the guardian of the Sunni variety of Islam. The inspiration of the Saudi operations is Prince Bandar bin Sultan. It has been widely reported that he has tried to destabilise Syria both through the National Coalition and with the help of outside forces, regardless of their orientation. In fact Syrian counterintelligence has tried to murder him on several occasions.

As often happens in intra-Moslem conflicts, the Prince justifies his actions by describing them as a jihad: a term meaning “struggle to establish the law of God on earth”, the obligation of every Moslem, but often interpreted to mean “holy war” in which anything is acceptable. The multitude of Islamic Peace organisations throughout the world have long objected to political figures using this term to justify actions against fellow Moslems, inspired by politics, rather than the promotion of the faith.

The true agenda of the Saudi leadership is not to promote “correct” Islam in a country which already largely practices it but to topple the regime, especially by stirring things up in the National Coalition. Islam does not actually preach terrorism, or support those who practice it. But in order to scale back the Moslem Brotherhood’s influence, Saudi Arabia is apparently happy to impose Ahmad al-Jarba as the National Coalition’s new leader.

Saudi Arabia has, officially, no higher value than Islam. The secular West has plenty. So who actually wants to promote a once-reviled terrorist to lead Syria, and for what purpose?

Although regional media reports claim that Ahmad al-Jarba was fasttracked to the highest post in the Coalition by outside intelligence services, mainly Saudi, his advancement also serves the interests of other players in the ongoing Syrian quagmire, including Qatar. In the long years when Jarba was regarded as everybody’s worst nightmare, his notoriety united the Saudi, Qatari and Syrian security services. They had a common enemy, and indeed this was largely true, as his plots and actions were aimed at all of them, indiscriminately.

Standing up to Jarba was a cheap way for the leaders of regional countries to present themselves as men of principle and reliable partners – i.e., acolytes hoping for a handout – in the War on Terror. Now each regional country is trying to use him for their own advantage at the expense of the others. In any such contest, the US generally has the support network to win the day. What Jarba is supposed to do for Syria when he is its leader does not even enter the equation.

Once again a fugitive from justice has become a valued intelligence asset working on the ground to topple a regime, with not only regional but US support. Prince Bandar is no fool and he has carefully calculated the risks involved in getting into bed with Jarba. He, could not have been allowed to take such risks without getting the green light from Washington, the instigatoe of the War on Terror, which for many years has actually meant the War on Jarba in this region.

As has been reported in the regional press, “Bandar bargained with several blocs in the Coalition over installing Jarba as the president of the opposition group in return for delivering game-changing weapons. Ahmad al-Jarba is known for being able to solve problems, and even for being ready and able to carry out paid assassinations, perhaps unpaid if his personal interests are served. For instance, it is known that Emir Hamad’s people asked Ahmad al-Jarba to assassinate the exiled Qatari foreign minister in Syria. Al-Jarba even received payment after accepting the offer.

Ahmad Jarba is an influential tribal figure in Syria, as a member of the important Shammar tribe, in a country with a “delicate balance” of tribal affiliations and political interests. On this basis, he has some claim to a stake in deciding the country’s future. But his long years as a wanted terrorist should cast doubt on his willingness to act as a statesman.

Jarba was an influential tribal figure before he became a terrorist, able to lever the same influence. For Jarba, terrorism wasn’t the only mode of political action open to him, it was a conscious choice. Maybe he will solve a short term problem, as the West perceives it. But what then?

The most likely scenario is that the Saudi and US intelligence services have done a deal to divide influence over the new Syria between them and are using the thorn in their respective sides to remove any obstacles to this hegemony. Jarba is, after all, the man most feared by all the other countries’ intelligence agencies and their chosen combatant factions.

Having served his purpose, he will again be branded a terrorist and replaced with someone with a better track record. All this will cost many lives and rivers of blood. None of it has anything to do with the Syrian people or any problem they are currently fighting about. It is therefore not a solution to those problems, but to the Saudi and US problem with Syria.

The rehabilitation of Jarba has nothing to do with resolving the Syrian conflict. It is a means of terrorizing other countries into extending Saudi and US influence in the region. Apparently no price is too high to pay to achieve this end.

In Afghanistan, the US and its allies now spit on the graves of the hundreds of dead youngsters they sent to fight the Taliban, and the thousands killed during the insurgency, by bringing the Taliban into government. In Afghanistan as in Syria, government of what? An independent country or a corridor of power far away where totally different issues are being discussed?

The question remains, if Ahmad Jarba is the best Washington and Riyadh were able to put forward, can you imagine the rest of the the so-called “National Coalition”?  Do felons make good peace negotiators?

Australian Film on I$raHell’s Torturing of Palestinian Children Sparks Controversy – Not Allowed Medical Treatment

“Stone Cold Justice”

A controversial film which has been produced by a group of Australian journalists has sparked an international outcry against I$raHell after it explicitly detailed Tel Aviv’s use of torture against Palestinian children.

The film, titled ‘Stone Cold Justice’ documents how Palestinian children, who have been arrested and detained by Israeli forces, are subjected to physical abuse, torture and forced into false confessions and pushed into gathering intelligence on Palestinian activists. Australia’s foreign minister Julie Bishop has spoken out against Israeli’s use of torture stating that “I am deeply concerned by allegations of the mistreatment of Palestinian children,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor has described the human rights abuses documented in the film as “intolerable”.

But rights groups have slammed this statement, saying that the Israelis are doing nothing to change Tel Aviv’s policy to torture Palestinian children. Last year a report by the United Nations International Emergency Children’s Fund or UNICEF concluded that Palestinian children are often targeted in night arrests and raids of their homes, threatened with death and subjected to physical violence, solitary confinement and sexual assault. The film Stone Cold Justice has sparked an international outcry about Israel’s treatment of children in Israeli jails. However, rights groups have criticized Tel Aviv for not doing anything to create a policy that protects Palestinian children against arbitrary arrest and torture.

I$raHell refuses to allow Palestinian patients to seek medical treatment in the occupied territories

Saudi Valentines defy the love police

Red roses lurk hidden in flower shop back rooms and heart-shaped chocolates are sold under the counter, but Saudis still manage to buy Valentine’s gifts and defy the religious police.

Florist Hussein came up with a simple solution to a ban on red tokens of love: he filled his window with white roses, orange irises and violet hydrangeas.

“I’ve hidden everything red in the shop, so when a religious police patrol comes along, they find nothing to complain about,” he said.

Anti-Valentine’s Day patrols by the Muttawa religious police — formally known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice — started on Wednesday.

They began entering premises stocking chocolates, flowers and souvenirs to warn proprietors against selling anything red or heart-shaped and linked to the annual “infidel celebration” of matters romantic.

Saudi Arabia applies a rigorous interpretation of Islam under which the sexes are strictly segregated and any public display of affection is completely taboo.

It is also the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive.

Hussein’s shop window may be blooming with white, orange and violet, but he still has the real thing — red roses — out the back.

“I’ve sold at least 350 red roses at 20 riyals ($5, 3.90 euros) a pop,” he said.

“Many women call us on the phone to order roses, because they fear the religious police.”

Kumar, another florist, was persuaded by a Muttawa visit not even to consider flouting the Valentine’s Day ban, however.

“We’re going to sell these to a chocolate shop,” he said, pointing to bouquets of red flowers in a back room of his store.

Confectioners do have chocolate hearts for discreet sale, but only to the right people.

“Of course we have them, but the religious police came by and warned us against selling them,” said one chocolate shop owner who asked not to be identified.

“We hid them because we don’t want any problems,” he added, smiling, indicating that an illicit transaction involving the chocolate contraband would be more than acceptable.

In another shop in a commercial district of the capital, an Egyptian employee said the religious police had told them not to sell heart-shaped chocolate or sweets wrapped in red paper.

One man browsing in the shop was clearly unhappy: “Why are they forbidden? It’s only chocolate!” he complained.

Another customer — an older man — shot him a dark look.

Only a liberal fringe of Saudis actually celebrates Valentine’s Day in an ultra-conservative society in which clerics and their pronouncements are widely respected.

One of the most popular, Mohammed al-Oreifi, this year took to Twitter where he has hundreds of thousands of followers, decreeing that those in the kingdom who celebrate Valentine’s Day “want to copy the infidels”.

However, not everywhere in Saudi Arabia is the ban strictly enforced.

In the Red Sea port of Jeddah, the country’s commercial capital in the west, a more liberal attitude towards the lovers’ festival can be noted.

This year, some florists have been openly selling red roses, and are unafraid to give their names.

“The religious police didn’t come. We’re doing nothing wrong anyway,” said Abu Zakaria, who runs a flower shop in the north of the city.

Another man, Thamer Hussein, said some people with romantic yearnings marked the Valentine’s festival a day in advance, to ensure the experience was hassle-free.

“Some young people celebrated St Valentine’s Day on Wednesday evening, with small parties and exchanges of gifts,” he said.

In this way they managed to avoid the attentions of the Muttawa, who are expected to perform their duties religiously on Friday, ensuring that for unmarried couples a quick canoodle is definitely unacceptable.

Statistics and figures: The number of Palestinian Journalists held in Zio-Nazi Camp’s

1,450 Jerusalemites have been arrested in 2013, including 450 children and 25 women. More than 20 children from those arrested were interrogated and kept under remand arrest for more than five days in solitary confinement. During this time they were confined to cells and prevented from seeing lawyers.
– Human rights group B’Tselem published statistics showing that by the end of November 2013, 173 Palestinian minors were held in Israeli prisons as security detainees and prisoners. Another 25 Palestinian minors were held in Israel Prison Service facilities for being in Israel illegally.
– Five Palestinian MPs are still detained in Israeli Jails under administrative detention, in addition to the former Minister Issa Jabari who spent more than nine years behind Israeli bars.
– Eight Palestinian prisoners continue their hunger strike in Israeli jails protesting their administrative detention.

Stop G4S and end Israeli violations against Palestinian political prisoners:

G4S is a British-Danish private security company that provides services and equipment to Israeli prisons, checkpoints, the Apartheid Wall and the Israeli police.
In 2007, G4S signed a contract with the Israeli Prison Authority to provide security systems and other services for major Israeli prisons. G4S provides systems for the Ketziot and Megiddo prisons, which hold Palestinian political prisoners from occupied Palestinian territory inside Israel. Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits the transfer of prisoners from occupied territory into the territory of the occupier.
G4S also provides equipment for Ofer prison, located in the occupied West Bank, and for Kishon and Moskobiyyeh detention facilities, at which human rights organisations have documented systematic torture and ill treatment of Palestinian prisoners. As Palestinian political prisoners begun a mass hunger strike on 17th April 2012 an action was taken to hold G4S accountable for its involvement with Israel’s unlawful detention of Palestinians.
G4S is also complicit with other aspects of Israel’s system of apartheid over the Palestinian people. G4S provides equipment and services to Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank that form part of the route of Israel’s illegal Wall and to the terminals isolating the occupied and besieged territory of Gaza. G4S has also signed contracts for equipment and services for the West Bank Israeli Police headquarters and to private businesses based in illegal Israeli settlements. A panel of legal experts concluded that G4S may be criminally liable for its activities in support of Israel’s illegal Wall and other violations of international law.
G4S has attempted to deflect the criticism it has been facing by announcing that it intends to end some aspects of its involvement in Israel’s illegal settlements by 2015. However, this response is unsatisfactory. The public announcements make no mention of the participation of G4S in the illegal detention and torture of Palestinian political prisoners inside Israel. Additionally, the announcement mentions only some aspects of the company’s involvement in Israel’s illegal settlements and pledges only to exit them at some undetermined point in the future.

Mohammed Barash wrote a letter in Arabic to his mother from Eichel prison in Beersheba, in title Don’t Tell My Mother That I Have Become Blind:

‘Don’t tell my mother that I can no longer see. She can see me but I can’t see. I fake my smiles when she shows me the photographs of my siblings, friends, and neighbors as she doesn’t know, that I have become blind after illness spread in my eyes till the darkness filled me.

Don’t tell her that I waited for several years to have a surgery to plant a cornea. But the Israeli Prison Service kept on procrastinating and procrastinating providing my eyes all reasons to leave me.

Don’t tell my mother that the shrapnel of bullets and the bombs which managed to hit me is still settling in my body, and that my left leg had been mutilated and replaced by a plastic one. Don’t tell her that the other leg rotted and dried of blood and life.

Don’t tell my mother that the prisoner’s emotions got stripped of the most basic elements of human life as he is sentenced to see only ashes and iron, lightless life and hopelessness.

Tell her that I am alive and safe. Tell her that I can see, walk, run, play, jump, write and read. Don’t tell her that I am shouldering my pains on my walking stick, and I can picture every martyr as a moon souring in the sky and calling me with the power of lightning, thunder and clouds.

Don’t tell her that I suffer from sleepless nights, and that I live under the mercy of the pain killers till it drugs my body. Don’t tell her that I keep twiddling my stuff till I barge into the iron beds or another prisoner sleeping close to me, to wake him up to help me reach the bathroom.  Don’t tell her that wakefulness always hurts me and sleep never visits me.

Don’t tell her that a piece of lead entered my eye in that bloody day in the camp streets.  They aggressively shot me until my leg was cut off, and my eye was gone.  And before I fainted I saw a little kid running toward me waving the Palestinian flag while screaming: a martyr, a martyr.

Tell her that my dream is not enough. My nostalgia for her is too much and her soul never leaves me. I still have from her my language, my purity, my symbols stuck on the wall, all of which heal my pain every time the light disappears around me.

Tell her that I always embrace her holy prayers, to survive from the dark cloud that surrounds me after my body has tortured me. I might get back to her or I might not, but I left the answer to this question open, although I’ve chosen spiritually to be close to her heart, as if I chose my future, of which I have officially no control.

Don’t tell her that Israel, a country in the 21st century, has turned the prisons into places where diseases are planted and bodies are ruined slowly; and slowly, it turned to be fields of trial for living people whose death is inevitable sooner or later.

Don’t tell her that I have become knowledgeable of all names of horrible illnesses and strange medications, along with all types of pain killers, while I’m witnessing my friend Zakariyya diving into a coma, with an ending unknown to me.

Don’t tell my mother about the sick prisoners whose diseases launched an insane war against their bodies: Ahmad Abu Errab, Khaled Ashawish, Ahmad El-Najjar, Mansour Mowqeda, Akram Mansour, Ahmad Samara, Wafaa El-Bis, Reema Daraghma, Tareq Asi, Mo’tasim Radad, Riyad Al-Amour, Yasir Nazzal, Ashraf Abu-Thare’, Jihad Abu-Haniyy. The merciless Israeli prisons slaughter them; illness and carelessness of a country that enjoys slow death sentences and funerals for others.

Tell her that I am still 30 doors away from you and I get closer every time a bird flies and a fire flames up my eye, and barbed wires wound me, carrying me to your arms and to your prayers.’
