NOVANEWS

IS-HIM-AL-BAGHDADI---

ISIL video of al-Baghdadi praying at Mosul’s mosque is fake, says Iraqi Ministry of Interior, simply because the Iraqi forces struck al-Baghdadi recently in an air strike and the ISIL terrorists took him to Syria for treatment.

(IraqiNews.com) The Ministry of Interior said on Saturday that the video which was posted on the Internet of the man claiming to be Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIL in Mosul, is a fake.
IraqiNews.com posted a copy of the video here

The Ministry spokesman, Brigadier Saad Maan said in a statement reported by Reuters that “the man who appeared in the video is not al-Baghdadi, certainly,” adding that “the ministry has analyzed the recording and concluded that it was a fake.”

Maan indicated that “the Iraqi forces struck al-Baghdadi recently in an air strike, and that the fighters of the Islamic State took him to Syria for treatment there” as reported yesterday by IraqiNews.com

The sites belonging to the terrorist organization of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant published earlier on Saturday photographs and a video clip of the leader of ISIL, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, delivering a sermon during Friday prayers in one of the mosques in Mosul.

The International Parliament for Security and Peace announced, yesterday, the escape of al-Baghdadi to Syria after being hit badly by a raid in the west of Anbar.

Here is a copy of the video that the Ministry of Interior claims to be fake:

Two daughters of the Saudi king- Sahar -R- and Jawaher

Two of the four daughters of the Saudi king being held captive in a royal palace in Saudi Arabia have spoken about their 13-year ordeal for the first time.

Princesses Sahar and Jawaher, who are daughters of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, talked with British television broadcaster Channel 4 News in an exclusive on-camera interview, saying they have no communication with the world outside of the gates of the royal compound in Jeddah where they are held.

Their sisters Maha and Hala are also being held in separate villas.

Sahar and Jawaher said they are “cut off, isolated… and alone” and that their father “the king, is responsible.”

“Why are we, grown women, held against our will? I believe we are now hostages,” Sahar, 42, said.

Jawaher warned about the situation of other people in the country, saying, “If he does that to his own children, how do you think the rest of the country is?”

On Monday, their mother, Alanoud al-Fayez, a former wife of the Saudi king, protested outside the Saudi Arabian embassy in London, calling for the release of her daughters.

Referring to Sahar and Jawaher, she said, “They are only having one meal a day. They are not allowed to leave or travel.”

“You cannot trust the Saudis, they can do anything.  I want to see my daughters; I want to be with them,” she added.

This came after Fayez appealed to US President Barack Obama to help free her four daughters on Friday.

Fayez divorced from the Saudi king in 2003 and has been living in London since then.

“Since 13 years, my daughters Sahar, Maha, Hala and Jawaher are being held captive,” AFP quoted Fayez as saying.

Obama arrived in Saudi Arabia on March 28 for a brief visit, as relations between Washington and Riyadh have soured in recent months over regional developments.

“Mr. Obama should take this opportunity to address these grave violations committed against my daughters,” Fayez stated.

She also said that the royal family has been “physically and psychologically abusing” them “for years”.

The Palestinian death toll has risen to 88 as Israel continues airstrikes on the third day of Operation Protective Edge. At least 18 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Tuesday, with a further 339 people injured, among them many civilians.  Earlier in the day health sources told RT that the Palestinian death toll had risen to 81 as Israel continued airstrikes on the third day of Operation Protective Edge. At least 21 children aged 16 or younger have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Tuesday, the Gaza health ministry said as cited by Beirut-based newspaper al-Akhbar. The previous fatalities count of 64 was voiced by the Palestinian side on Thursday morning. Earlier emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said the a night strike targeted a coffee shop in the city of Khan Younis, killing six men and wounding at least 15 others, AFP reported. A second strike hit the home of Raed Shalat at Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing him and injuring several others, Qidra added. Seven people – three women and four children – were killed in further strikes on two houses in Khan Younis. The Palestinian Health Ministry said five of those killed were children. Another 16 people were also wounded in the attack, the ministry added.

Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says over 360 rockets have been fired at Israel since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge. Over 590 targets in the Gaza Strip were hit. The offensive is the worst escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinians since 2012. Palestinian rockets have targeted central and southern Israel, reaching as far as Jerusalem but causing no serious casualties. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will give a briefing at an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Thursday around the escalating Israeli-Palestinian violence. “Gaza is on a knife edge,” Ban told reporters on Wednesday. “I firmly condemn the multiple rocket attacks launched from Gaza on Israel. Such attacks are unacceptable and must stop.” “I also urged [Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu to exercise maximum restraint and to respect international obligations to protect civilians. I condemn the rising number of civilian lives lost in Gaza,” he added.

It’s Reshuffle Monday

NOVANEWS
By: Mehdi Hasan

1) IT’S RESHUFFLE MONDAY

Dave is getting ready to reshuffle his cabinet – for the first time since 2012. And it’s going to be a good day for the double X-chromosomed members of his parliamentary party – if, that is, the Number 10 spin is to be believed. From the Guardian:

“Cameron, who hosted allies at a summer barbecue at Chequers on Sunday, will embark on the first stages of his reshuffle Monday evening when, in the Commons, he meets ministers who face the sack… The prime minister is planning to say goodbye to old hands such as the former chancellor Kenneth Clarke, chief whip Sir George Young, and Commons leader, Andrew Lansley. Cameron is expected to start the second phase of his reshuffle on Tuesday when new arrivals and promoted ministers walk along Downing Street in the full glare of the cameras to meet him. The usual Tuesday morning meeting of the cabinet has been cancelled to allow for the reshuffle. Esther McVey, the employment minister, Nicky Morgan, the women’s minister, and Liz Truss, the childcare minister, are all expected to be given promotion.

The Independent’s Matthew Norman jokes:

“The PM is so desperate to counter the Tory gender problem by advancing photogenic women that Cameron Diaz and Shakira may well have been sounded out for portfolios, though the more-reliable gossip contends that Esther McVey, Liz Truss and Nicky Morgan are due to join the Cabinet. Also expected to be promoted are a host of other women and members from ethnic minority backgrounds.”

The Sun, under the headline ‘Old Pals Axe’, says Dave “will tonight swing the axe on up to TWENTY ministers in a radical pre-election shake-up of his front bench team… Among those facing the axe are Welsh Secretary David Jones, Commons leader Andrew Lansley and Environment Secretary Owen Paterson.”

Will some of the current crop of ministers jump before they’re pushed? The Times reports:

“David Cameron was hoping last night that Ken Clarke, the Tory veteran, would spare him the ordeal of having to sack him by tendering his resignation before a reshuffle tomorrow. An old guard of ‘pale, male and stale’ ministers will be braced for a summons to the prime minister’s office in the House of Commons today where they will be informed that they are being axed to make way for fresher faces. Among those expected to go are Mr Clarke, who has served in the cabinets of three prime ministers, along with the chief whip Sir George Young and Andrew Lansley, leader of the house.”

The paper also suggests Liam Fox and Mark Harper – both of whom quit the government in disgrace – are being “seriously considered for a return to government” as part of a “redemption theme”. Hmm. Last time Dave decided to make a big deal out of giving people ‘second chances’ he hired Andy Coulson. Also, doesn’t the quick return of disgraced ministers to government – think David Laws – make a mockery of both ministerial responsibility and ministerial resignations?

2) DAVE VS THE ‘CYBER TERRORISTS’

From the Telegraph’s splash:

“The Armed Forces must adapt to deal with ‘unseen enemies’, David Cameron says today as he announces a £1.1billion investment in the military to tackle new threats to national security. The Prime Minister will say that spending on “intelligence and surveillance” equipment, such as drones, is a ‘national necessity’. Mr Cameron, writing in The Daily Telegraph, warns that Britain faces changing threats in the form of global terrorism and unseen cyber criminals who can target the country from abroad. We ‘cannot defend the realm from the white cliffs of Dover’, he writes.”

3) FTSE FAT CATS

We’re all in this together, remember? From the Independent:

“Executive pay has reached 162 times the wage of the average worker, following a 15 per cent pay rise for the top 100 bosses in the UK. A new report, issued by think tank the High Pay Centre, called on the Government to take ‘radical action’ to close the gap by requiring firms to cap executive pay at a set multiple of the money earned by their lowest-paid employees… The powers, granted by the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, in October last year, mean a firm’s renumeration to executives requires support from 50 per cent of shareholders to pass. But the changes did not stop the pay of the average FTSE 100 chief executive increasing from £4.1m in 2012 to £4.7m last year, the report said.”

Lucky the coalition cut the top rate of tax on high earners, eh?

4) ‘THOU SHALT NOT LIE’

That’s the headline on the front of the Telegraph, which explains:

“Newly elected MPs should be put on an induction course to learn ‘the seven commandments’ of standards in public life, a parliamentary committee has said. Before entering the House of Commons, MPs should be taught about the need to be honest and have integrity when serving the public, the Committee on Standards in Public Life has said in a report. The report calls for all people elected to office, including civil servants, the police and local government officials, to adhere to the ‘seven principles of public life’. The seven principles are selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.”

The Guardian also reports on the story:

“The committee on standards in public life, chaired by the Belfast historian Lord Bew, says many MPs appear to show little interest in understanding the principles drawn up in 1995 after sleaze scandals during John Major’s premiership. In a letter to the prime minister presenting the independent advisory body’s latest report, Bew writes that the committee identified areas where improvements could be made and the profile of ethical standards raised.”

Will this new approach stop the next expenses scandal? Hmm…

5) MERKEL MANIA

How will Germany’s stunning World Cup campaign affect Frau Merkel’s standing in the domestic political scene?

The BBC’s Stephen Evans in Berlin writes:

“She’s been accused of shamelessly attaching herself to the footballers and their success, and the polls have shown upward blips of support for her as the team has progressed. But will it last? There’s no doubt the World Cup has played well for her. Within an hour of the final whistle, there seemed to be a million tweets of her pictured in the middle of the sweaty, victorious team holding the trophy, the president of Germany beside her.”

He concludes, however: “Angela Merkel is unlikely to get a great political benefit from the victory of Germany on the field. She is already widely approved of in the polls and a picture of her with other successful people may just reinforce that image. Think of how an unpopular politician would be greeted if he or she attempted to piggyback on the success of a team.”

Meanwhile, the Telegraph reports that the German chancellor has no plans to “complete a full term” and wants to quit ahead of the 2017 elections and perhaps even become the next UN secretary-general.

WAS MAGGIE INVOLVED IN PAEDO COVER-UP?

NOVANEWS

By: Mehdi Hasan
1) WAS MAGGIE INVOLVED IN PAEDO COVER-UP?

From the Sunday People:

“Margaret Thatcher personally covered up child abuse allegations made against one of her senior ministers, according to explosive new claims. The Tory Prime Minister is said to have held a high-powered meeting with the rising star, who was being tipped for promotion, and told him: ‘You have to clean up your sexual act.’ It followed an allegation that the minister had sexually abused young boys at the home of one of his political allies in 1982. However the minister apparently ignored the warnings. It is claimed that four years later he was spotted by police seeking young boys for sex at Victoria railway station in London. But no action was taken. The extraordinary claims – made to the Sunday People by a source with inside knowledge of Scotland Yard in the early 1980s – are now expected to be put before the Westminster child abuse inquiry announced last week by the Prime Minister.”

2) BOMBING DISABILITY HOMES? REALLY?

Is this what the Israelis mean by a ‘targeted’ air campaign against Gaza? From the Independent on Sunday:

“The residents of the Mobarat Felestin centre for the disabled had just finished suhoor, the early morning meal before a long day of fasting during Ramadan, when the first missile hit the roof. It may have been the standard warning issued by the Israeli military that a major attack was coming. But the people inside did not know that. And, with all but one of them suffering from mental and physical disability, it is highly unlikely they would have been able to escape in any event. The ensuing air strike..demolished a large part of the structure.. leaving two dead and four others horrifically injured from shrapnel and burns. As the victims were carried out of the ruined building in Beit Lahia, through the charred debris, twisted metal and shards of glass, the mood was one of despondency – and anger.”

Meanwhile, the BBC this morning reports that “at least 159 Palestinians have died in the air strikes, Gaza officials say. They are said to include 17 members of one family who died in an Israeli missile strike on Saturday evening.”

Is any western government going to demand a ceasefire? Put any pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu?

3) ‘SEE A SHRINK IF YOU WANT HANDOUTS’

That’s the rather loaded and offensive headline in the Sun on Sunday, which covers the latest chapter of the coalition’s war on benefit claimants:

“Benefit claimants with anxiety and depression like TV’s White Dee may be forced to get counselling or lose handouts. Ministers are considering the move due to the high numbers signed off sick with “treatable” conditions. Four pilot projects have been ordered to probe links between providing mental health support and getting people back to work.. Sources said around 260,000 on ESA — about half — who are meant to be preparing for work have mental health problems. They get handouts worth around £1.3billion a year.”

Yet, as Dr Sarah Wollaston, former GP and Tory chair of the Commons health select committee, tweeted this morning: “Just imagining the increase in prescriptions for antidepressants to ‘prove’ compliance with treatment. Unethical, unworkable nonsense.”

BECAUSE YOU’VE READ THIS FAR…

Watch this video of an awkward stand-off on the stairs between a dog and a cat.

4) PAY YER TAXES

It’s a Christian obligation, apparently. The Archbishop of Canterbury told BBC1’s Andrew Marr show this morning that the wealthiest members of our society had a “duty to make a proper contribution to society”.

“There have to be serious questions about some of these tax avoidance schemes,” said Justin Welby, before adding that it was the responsibility of governments to close the various tax loopholes that are exploited by (legal) tax avoiders.

He also criticised the “hysterical” coverage of British Muslims and the issue of extremism.

5) EMBARRASSING BLAIR

Those so-called “comfort letters”, in which almost 200 IRA terrorism suspects were told they were not wanted by police, are now causing a bit of a problem for the former prime minister who oversaw their issuance. From the Sunday Telegraph:

“Tony Blair faces being summoned before Parliament to explain the secret deals he made with Sinn Fein to assure IRA suspects “on the run” that they were not wanted by the police, The Sunday Telegraph can disclose. The former prime minister has been accused of dodging a Commons select committee investigating the affair. MPs on the committee are to consider issuing a formal parliamentary order compelling Mr Blair to attend a hearing to give evidence — a highly embarrassing prospect for the former Labour leader.”

Kashmir: Martyrs’ Day is Alive

NOVANEWS
By Sajjad Shaukat

The Martyrs’ Day, known as Youme Shuhada-e-Kashmir is observed on July 13 every year on both sides of the Line of Control and all over the world by the Kashmiris to pay homage to 22 Kashmiris who were martyred in 1931 to free Kashmir from the brutalities of despotic Dogra rulers. The day is the milestone in the history of Kashmiri struggle against foreign occupation.

However, the history of Dogra rule (1846-1947) in Kashmir is replete with tyrannous treatment, meted out to the Kashmiri Muslims by Dogra forces. Under the Dogra rule, they were leading so miserable life that it was difficult to differentiate them from beasts. Slave labour, heavy taxes, capital punishment for cow slaughter, and living under constant terror was order of the day.

In this regard, Yousaf Saraf in his book, ‘Kashmiris Fight for Freedom’ calls it “free forced labour” and “instead of donkeys and horses, Kashmiri Muslims were used for transportation of goods across the far-flung areas.” Atrocities of the Dogra regime could also be judged from the book of Sir Walter Lawrence, ‘The India We Served’. While describing the pathetic picture of the Kashmiris, he writes, “Army was employed in forcing the villagers to plough and sow, and worse still, the soldiers came at harvest time and when the share of the state had been seized” and “there was very little grain to tide the unfortunate peasants over the cruel winter.”

On April 19, 1931, the ban of Eid Khutba (Sermon) ignited widespread demonstrations in the Jummu city for a number of days. It was followed by desecration of the Holy Quran at the hands of Dogra forces, which resulted into outrage among the Muslims throughout the state. In Srinagar, people gathered in Jamia Masjid to denounce this blasphemy. One such get-together was held in Khankah-e-Muella Srinagar, which was addressed by prominent Kashmiris. When the meeting was concluded, a youth, Abdul Qadeer, pointing his finger to the Maharaja’s palace, raised slogans “destroy its every brick.” With the accusation of sedition, he was arrested forthwith. Abdul Qadir was to be tried in the court but due to large public resentment, the court was shifted to Central Jail Srinagar.

On July 12, 1931, in response to the shifting of court, intense public protests were held throughout the city. The next day, on July 13, 1931, thousands of people thronged the Central Jail Srinagar to witness the in-camera trial of Abdul Qadeer. As the time for obligatory prayer approached, a young Kashmiri stood for Azan. The Dogra Governor, Ray Zada Tartilok Chand ordered soldiers to open fire at him. When he got martyred, another young man took his place and started Azan. He was also shot dead. In this way, 22 Kashmiris embraced martyrdom in their efforts to complete the Azan. The people carried the dead and paraded through the streets of Srinagar, chanting slogans against Dogra brutalities. Complete strike was observed in the city, which was followed by weeklong mourning. This incident shook the whole state and the traffic from Srinagar to Rawalpindi and Srinagar to Jammu came to halt from July 13 to 26, 1931. The 22 martyrs are buried in Martyrs’ Graveyard at Khawaja Bazar, Srinagar.

Consequent upon these brutal killings, the Kashmiri leadership realized the need to form a political party, Muslim Conference (MC) with a view to waging struggle for their freedom. Later, in 1934, state’s first elections were held and MC won 10 out of 21 seats, and after two years in 1936, it succeeded in getting 19 out of 21 seats. Indian Congress was upset with this situation and tried to create division in the ranks of Kashmiri leadership. Afterwards, on July 19, 1947, MC passed a resolution to merge Kashmir with Pakistan, considering the geographical proximity—majority of Muslim population (77%), language and cultural relations of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ironically, despite a lapse of 66 years, Kashmiris are still struggling and sacrificing to achieve their alienable right under the UN resolutions for the plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir Valley is one of the most heavily militarized regions in the world with Indian 7 million armed security forces which are perpetrating various forms of state terrorism on the innocent Kashmiris. Since 1989, a deliberate campaign by the Indian army and paramilitary forces against the Kashmiris has been manifested in brutal tactics such as crackdowns, curfews, illegal detentions, massacre, targeted killings, sieges, burning the houses, torture, disappearances, rape, breaking the legs, molestation of Muslim women and killing of persons through fake encounter.

According to a report on human rights violations in the Indian Occupied Kashmir, from January 1989 to December 2013, there have been deaths of 93,984 innocent Kashmiris, 7,014 custodial killings, 1,22,771 arrests, 1,05,996 destruction of houses or buildings, 22,776 women widowed,  1,07,466 children orphaned and  10,086 women gang-raped/molested.

Indian brutal securities forces have continued these atrocities—extrajudicial killings in way or the other.  From January 1 to June 15, 2014, there have been deaths of 54 innocent Kashmiris, 09 custodial killings, 3438 arrests, 08 destruction of houses or buildings, 02 women widowed, 03 children orphaned and 34 women gang-raped/molested.

Besides Human Rights Watch, in its various reports, Amnesty International has also pointed out grave human rights violations in the Indian controlled Kashmir, indicating, “The Muslim majority population in the Kashmir Valley suffers from the repressive tactics of the security forces. Under the Jammu and Kashmir Disturbed Areas Act, and the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act and Public Safety Act, security forces personnel have extraordinary powers to shoot suspected persons.”

In this respect, European Union has passed a resolution about human rights abuses committed by Indian forces in the Indian held Kashmir.

It is of particular attention that in 2008, a rights group reported unmarked graves in 55 villages across the northern regions of the Indian-held Kashmir. Then researchers and other groups reported finding thousands of mass graves without markers. In this regard, in the last few years, rights groups discovered nearly 3,000 unnamed graves in the various districts of Kashmir. In this respect, in August, 2011, Indian Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) officially acknowledged in its report that innocent civilians killed in the two-decade conflict have been buried in unmarked graves. The report indicated 2,156 unidentified bodies which were found in mass graves in various regions of the Indian-held Kashmir.

Notably, foreign sources and human rights organisations have revealed that unnamed graves include those innocent persons, killed by the Indian military and paramilitary troops in the fake encounters including those who were tortured to death by the Indian secret agency RAW.

In its report China’s leading News Agency Xinhua has unearthed more gruesome details on world-stunning unmarked graves in Poonch of the Indian occupied Kashmir. The report revealed the statement of Sofi Aziz Joo, caretaker of a graveyard as saying, “Police and Army used to bring those bodies and direct me to bury them. The bodies were usually bullet-ridden, mutilated, faces disfigured and sometimes without limbs and heads.”

While, Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) and rights groups have pointed out that more than 10,000 people have disappeared, accusing government forces of staging fake gun battles to cover up killings. They also revealed that suspected persons had been arrested and were murdered through arbitrary executions, and then buried in unmarked graves.

It seems that non-condemnation of these Indian massive human rights violations and non-interference for the settlement of this issue by the so-called civilized international community, especially the US have further encouraged New Delhi to keep on going with its state terrorism on the armless Kashmiri masses. Ignorance of the issue by them involves the risk of nuclear war between Pakistan and India.

Indian authorities are not willing to talk with Kashmiri people on political grounds. New Delhi reached to a conclusion that only bullet is the right way of dealing with Kashmiris, demanding their right of self-determination. Surprisingly, Indian successive governments are trying to ignore the dynamics of the freedom movement of Kashmiris for the sake of their alien rule.

It is notable that dialogue between India and Pakistan took place on a number of occasions, but produced no outcome, prolonging the agony of the subjugated people of the occupied Kashmir due to Indian intransigence.

Nevertheless, observance of Kashmiris’ freedom struggle during the Martyrs’ Day every year is reaffirmation of the fact that Kashmiris will continue to fight against Indian illicit occupation. In this context, Youme Shuhada-e-Kashmir is an ideal day for Kashmiris to seek inspiration to take their war of liberation to its logical end. At this time of distress, the people of Pakistan’s side are sharing the grief of Kashmiri freedom lovers. Pakistan also observes Youme Shudaha-e-Kashmir on July 13, launching a protest against the oppressive polices of Indian occupation, which have continued against the hapless Kashmiris.

Nonetheless, on July 13, all over the world, Kashmiris renew their pledge to continue the ongoing war of liberation for the accomplishment of their right of self-determination and for the independence of Kashmir from the despotic Indian rulers who continue state terrorism in the Indian-controlled Kashmir like the Dogra rulers. Therefore, Martyrs’ Day is alive today.

Pakistan: Controlling Media for Elimination of Terrorism

NOVANEWS

By Sajjad Shaukat

Terrorism is based on symbolic strategy to communicate connotative meanings by conveying the message to different segments of society and administrative echelons that terrorists are powerfully dangerous, deadly and treacherous. Hence, the terrorists select sensitive targets like airports, women, children and lone bread-earners of a family, Police officials, judges and others representatives (Personnel) of the law enforcing agencies, security forces and so on.

In case of Pakistan, it is openly stated that terrorists are not invincible, and that they can be eliminated through power of the state, coupled with collective efforts of various entities of the country.

For the purpose, contents of media reports must be properly monitored and strongly censored prior to broadcast. Media must follow a code of conduct and journalistic ethics, as envisaged by the profession of journalism and in accordance with the national interests. The official or self-control mechanism, related to the war against terrorism is essential for the Pakistani media, particularly for the TV channels. Media must project that state is more powerful than the misled bands of terrorist outfits.

In this regard, the electronic media should not buy the panic-ridden messages of the militants, portraying them as the most dangerous and powerful elements who will play havoc with the targeted victims. Rather, the media should indicate that terrorists are weak and fragile; therefore, they undertake heinous missions stealthily. Media must exploit their vulnerabilities by projecting their true worth.

Especially, our media must be fully controlled in order to conduct successful counter-terror operations, and should be used as a support element of the state. It should not be allowed to conduct selective coverage of events such as showing mutilated bodies, severely injured people, destruction of property and brutally smashed scenes of surrounding.

Live coverage of operation should not be permitted. If, it is allowed, it should be specifically authorized by the highest level of command or administration and should be used only, when it is beneficial to Pakistan’s national interests or positive projection of our own image.

It is notable that in the recent past, the electronic media recklessly failed to demonstrate sense of censor, showing maturity in live coverage of the Karachi Airport operation against the militants. In this context, certain information including move of own echelons, different steps or techniques, used by own forces, supervision of operation by a particular tier of command, arrival of higher officials and reports submitted to Army’s high command etc. were required to be strongly censored, as the same information was also made available to terrorists through live coverage. Live coverage of security personnel moving in a particular direction was utterly irresponsible, as such movements were part of the operation, the outcome of which was yet to be decided. The operation was to proceed in different phases to imbalance and eliminate the terrorists. This required media to show sustainable patience, calmness, self-control and forbearance. A line must be drawn beyond what media should not be allowed to operate and make noise.

Irresponsible media coverage creates misperceptions and demoralizes own forces. This also entails conducting proper training of media reporters and anchors which must be ensured by media houses.

Besides, in crisis situation, lives are at risk. In this connection, media should not disclose names of victims, vital locations, forces, weapons, used and tactics adopted. It is also duty of media to create and maintain sense of hope among domestic audience, especially when the operation is still going on.

There should be an effective media controlling body to monitor and direct the media to engage in media coverage of sensitive installations such as airports, air bases and other security outfits.

Nevertheless, it is better that during counter-terrorism operations, media must be fully controlled and kept out. This will help all tiers of command to maintain their effectiveness against the terrorists, and achieve their objectives. Simply speaking, if media is controlled, the terrorism can be easily eliminated.

Every one knows that during this different war against terrorism, Pakistan is passing through a very crucial moment. In this context, besides other terror-attacks at various places of the country, massacre of the innocent Shia pilgrims in Balochistan, attack on Karachi Airport and suicidal assault on the Security Force at Boya, which occurred within 24 hours prove the fact that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Lashkar-e-Jahngvi (LeJ), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other separatist outfits like the Baluch sub-nationalists have connections with one another. They are behind several terror-attacks and sectarian violence, as assisted by American CIA, Indian RAW and Israeli Mossad. These insurgent groups are responsible for human rights violations in Baluchistan and other places of Pakistan. Undoubtedly, these internal banned outfits have a nexus with a single aim to destabilize Pakistan at foreign behest. Their foreign masters synchronized these cowardly acts in darkness to hurt Pakistan domestically, regionally and internationally. Question arises, who are the real beneficiary—only those who move strings of traitors living in Pakistan. However, we must unite against our true enemies.

While claiming responsibility for Karachi Airport assault by the TTP after recovery of Indian-made weapons, ammunition and chemical syringes from the militants clearly indicates that Indian RAW is directly involved in all terrorist activities in Pakistan. In this drastic development, should we always remain silent to keep the so-called Aman ki Asha (Desire for peace) with New Delhi alive?

In fact, TTP which is fulfilling the sinister designs of Pakistan’s external enemies was playing the double game like its foreign masters. It orchestrated Jirgas of the tribesmen just to gain strength and time to resolve their own internal differences. At the same time, they conducted brutal attacks against Pakistan’s strategic installations and assets to obtain nefarious aims to malign us in international community and destabilize our commercial hub, Karachi. We must not tolerate this any longer.

It is mentionable that the military operation, “Zarb-e-Azb” against the militants in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) has rapidly been making progress, as the jets of Pakistan Air Force have bombed militants’ hideouts, and Pak Army has been recapturing the areas, controlled by the TTP. So far, armed forces have killed several militants, destroyed their bomb-making factories and forced more than 40 insurgents to surrender before the Army. The operation is successfully achieving its objectives due to the fact that the entire Pakistani nation—civil society, political parties, media houses and opinion builders fully supported military operation against terrorists and their bases in NWA. No doubt, the progress of the operation is very encouraging, showing sense of hope and optimism that a broad-based military operation will annihilate the terrorists, smashing their safe havens in North Waziristan regions.

But, despite this cooperation which shows national unity for the North Waziristan operation, our media needs responsibility for elimination of terrorism in the country. In this respect, official press briefings are earnestly essential, as their absence would add to chaos and state of uncertainty, allowing media to act without any direction, and requisite restrain or responsibility. A mechanism must be prepared to control media affairs (especially when any operation is going on) through designated officials.

Again, live coverage of an event should be sparingly done and efforts must be made to support the state organs—law enforcing agencies and the security forces. Media must not be allowed to glorify the terrorists through their irresponsible and careless reporting. Therefore, it is correct to construe that proper control over media which is the key to eliminate terrorism is need of the hour. Let us do it before it is too late.
