Russia Negotiates Ceasefire In Ukraine: NATO Responds With Troops, Warships, and Sanctions

Global Research

Only hours after Russian President Vladmir Putin managed to secure a fragile ceasefire between the Western-backed fascist regime in Kiev and the Russian-backed separatists in Eastern Ukraine, NATO has rewarded Russia’s efforts by shipping NATO soldiers into Western Ukraine, increasing the number of NATO navy vessels in the Black Sea, and leveling new sanctions against Moscow.

According to Reuters, Western Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and one of the main separatist leaders of Eastern Ukraine have agreed to order ceasefires on Friday, pending that an agreement is made on a new peace plan.

Reuters states:

Speaking on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Wales, Poroshenko said the ceasefire would be conditional on a planned meeting going ahead in Minsk on Friday of envoys from UkraineRussia and Europe’s OSCE security watchdog.

“At 1400 local time (0700 ET on Friday), provided the (Minsk) meeting takes place, I will call on the General Staff to set up a bilateral ceasefire and we hope that the implementation of the peace plan will begin tomorrow,” he told reporters.

Alexander Zakharchenko, head of the main rebel Donetsk People’s Republic, said in a statement his men would also order a ceasefire, from one hour later, provided that Kiev’s representatives signed up to a peace plan at the Minsk meeting.

Still, the ceasefire is hanging by a thread.

For instance, some rebel leaders view the ceasefire with extreme suspicion since other ceasefires allegedly initiated by Kiev have fallen apart or never actually taken place. Reuters reports,

Rebels still expressed scepticism. Oleg Tsaryov, a senior rebel official, told Reuters the separatist truce would depend on the government providing guarantees, “because in the past we had some ceasefire agreements Poroshenko didn’t honor”.

A source close to Zakharchenko said government forces bombarded Donetsk within 15 minutes of Poroshenko’s announcement of the ceasefire plan: “We’ll see how the talks go tomorrow, but it won’t be easy. All this talk of truce amid more and more shelling.”

Former central banker and current Prime Minister of Western Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, flatly dismissed the ceasefire plan, calling it a trap.

In addition, Western media outlets claim that the fighting on the ground continues in Ukraine. However, one would be justified in questioning the veracity of these reports given the track record of these operations and the obvious desire of Western media to discredit any Russian success in terms of ending the violence. On the other hand, given the track record of Kiev, ceasefire agreements do not have a great life expectancy.

There are wild cards, of course. Most notably, whether or not the Western fascists such as Right Sector will abide by the terms of the ceasefire deal. Indeed, this is one of the major concerns of the Donetsk Republic Prime Minister Zakharchenko.

Putin’s seven point peace plan outline is as follows:

First, end active offensive operations by armed forces, armed units and militia groups in southeast Ukraine in the Donetsk and Lugansk areas.

Second, withdraw Ukrainian armed forces units to a distance that would make it impossible to fire on populated areas using artillery and all types of multiple launch rocket systems.

Third, allow for full and objective international monitoring of compliance with the ceasefire and monitoring of the situation in the safe zone created by the ceasefire.

Fourth, exclude all use of military aircraft against civilians and populated areas in the conflict zone.

Fifth, organise the exchange of individuals detained by force on an ‘all for all’ basis without any preconditions.

Sixth, open humanitarian corridors for refugees and for delivering humanitarian cargoes to towns and populated areas in Donbass – Donetsk and Lugansk Regions.

Seventh, make it possible for repair brigades to come to damaged settlements in the Donbass region in order to repair and rebuild social facilities and life-supporting infrastructure and help the region to prepare for the winter.

In response to the Russian-brokered peace deal, NATO has responded in a typical confrontational fashion. Only hours after the ceasefire was announced, NATO and the United States announced that dynamic duo of destabilization was going ahead with planned military exercises in Western Ukraine that will see approximately 1,000 troops posted on Ukrainian soil.

Shortly ahead of the NATO meeting, Barack Obama stated from Estonia “that the U.S. and NATO would not allow a foreign country to encroach on its friends. He said this after blaming Moscow for the political turmoil in Ukraine. He was a hair away from saying that the U.S. would protect Ukraine from a Russian military attack.

If the NATO exercises were not enough to inflame tensions in the fragile country, four NATO warships are also set to enter the Black Sea this week. USS Ross, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, French Commandant Birot, Canadian HMCS Toronto, a Halifax-class frigate, and Spanish frigate Almirante Juan de Borbon are all set to enter the Black Sea before September 7.

As RT reports,

The Montreux Convention of 1936 states that warships of non-Black Sea states can stay in the Black Sea for no more than 21 days. It adds that the maximum deadweight of a non-regional warship in the area should not exceed 45,000 tons.

Despite the convention limits, NATO has managed to increase its presence in the region in the wake of the Ukrainian crisis by constantly rotating warships there. Russia does not approve of what it sees as muscle-flexing by the military alliance in its backyard.

In July this year, the grouping of NATO ships in the Black Sea reached nine vessels, setting a record for the post-Soviet period.

Rounding out the provocative stance of Western leaders, the results of the NATO summit reveal the intention to impose yet more sanctions against Russia over the crisis in Ukraine. According to the New York times,

The extended European package, which was agreed to in principle by leaders, at a European Union summit meeting last week, would cover state energy and defense companies, said one British official who requested anonymity under government rules.

Restrictions on Russian banks would be extended, and there would be more measures against so-called dual-use equipment, particularly in the communications and aerospace sectors. The access of Russian banks to the European debt market would be further restricted and limited to shorter-term debt.

Clearly, the United States and NATO are not seeking a peaceful solution in Ukraine. If they were, they would be applauding the ability of Putin to secure a ceasefire and a reasonable roadmap to a sustained halt of hostilities. If the US and NATO were seeking peace in Ukraine, they never would have orchestrated the Euromaidan color revolution to begin with.

Still, as the American people buy Western propaganda hook, line, and sinker, those of us who have a grasp of current events seem doomed to be dragged ever closer to a direct confrontation with a nuclear world power. We can continue to ignore the facts and the political process now but, if such a confrontation ever happens, we will not be able to ignore it any longer.

The Atlantic Alliance’s “Holy War” against the Islamic State (ISIS): NATO’s Role in the Recruitment of Islamic Terrorists

According to I$raHell Intelligence News Source

By Prof Michel Chossudovsky
Global Research
nato un

While NATO leaders in Newport Wales debate the Atlantic Alliance’s role “in containing a mounting militant threat in the Middle East”, it is worth recalling that in 2011 at the outset of the war in Syria,  NATO became actively involved in the recruitment of Islamic fighters.

Reminiscent of the enlistment of the Mujahideen to wage the CIA’s jihad (holy war) in the heyday of the Soviet-Afghan war, NATO headquarters in Brussels in liaison with the Turkish High command, according to Israeli intelligence sources, was involved in the enlisting of thousands of terrorists:

“Also discussed in Brussels and Ankara, our sources report, is a campaign to enlist thousands of Muslim volunteers in Middle East countries and the Muslim world to fight alongside the Syrian rebels. The Turkish army would house these volunteers, train them and secure their passage into Syria. (Debkafile, August 31, 2011 emphasis added).

Confirmed by Israeli intelligence News, NATO played a key role in the delivery of weapons to Al Qaeda affiliated rebels in the Aleppo region bordering onto Turkey:

NATO and a number of European governments, most significantly the UK, have started airlifting heavy weapons to the Syrian rebels poised in Aleppo to fend off a major Syrian army offensive, according to debkafile’s exclusive military sources. They disclose that the first shipments were landed Monday night, June 17 [2013], and early Tuesday in Turkey and Jordan. They contained anti-air and tank missiles as well as recoilless 120 mm cannons mounted on jeeps. From there, they were transferred to rebel forces in southern Syria and Aleppo in the northwest. (Debkafile, June 18, 2013)

“Terrorists R Us”

Ironically, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron (who is hosting the NATO Summit in Wales), have asserted that they “will not be cowed by barbaric killers”:

“We will not waver in our determination to confront the Islamic State … If terrorists think we will weaken in the face of their threats they could not be more wrong.” (Barack Obama and David Cameron, Strengthening the NATO alliance,op ed published in the London Times, September 4, 2014, emphasis added)

But these “Barbaric Killers” were created by the Western military alliance. They are serving the strategic interests of the U.S., Britain, not to mention Israel.

[file photo]

“They are Our Terrorists“. Without the terrorists, the “Global War on Terrorism” would fall flat.

The Obama-Cameron narrative borders on ridicule. It is not only absurd, it is criminal.

What they are proposing is an all encompassing NATO mandate to “Go after Terrorist Entities” which they themselves created as part of an insidious intelligence operation to destabilize and destroy both Syria and Iraq

British and French Special Forces have been actively training Syria opposition rebels from a base in Turkey.

Israel has provided a safe haven to Al Qaeda affiliated rebels including ISIS and Al Nusrah rebels in the occupied Golan Heights.

Netanyahu has met up with jihadist leaders in the Golan Heights. The IDF top brass acknowledges that  there are “global jihad elements inside Syria” supported by Israel.

Image left: Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Shakes Hand with a wounded Al Qaeda Terrorist in occupied Golan.

Lest we forget, Al Qaeda was at the outset a creation of the CIA. Who is behind the ISIS terrorists?  The mainstream media is mum on the subject, despite mountains of evidence that they are creations of the Western military alliance.

Islamic State funded by Saudi Arabia enters Iraq

NATO’s Criminal Agenda

What we are dealing with is a criminal agenda under NATO auspices. The evidence amply confirms that the US and Britain in liaison with the Atlantic Alliance have relentlessly supported both the creation as well as development of an Islamic Terror Network which now extends from the Middle East and North Africa into sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia.

And now Obama and Cameron, whose governments are the architects of the Islamic State, are calling upon the Atlantic Alliance as well all on the governments of the 28 NATO member states to endorse the bombing campaign on Iraq and Syria as part of “counter-terrorism” operation.

The ISIS brigades are “intelligence assets” supported by US-NATO-Israel. They will not be the object of the bombings. Quite the opposite.

What is envisaged as part of the propaganda campaign is to use the “threat of the Islamic State” as a pretext and justification to intervene militarily under a “humanitarian” “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) mandate. The civilian population will not be protected.  Under this diabolical military-intelligence operation, The Islamic State (ISIS) brigades with Western Special Forces within their ranks are slated to be “protected”.

The War on Syria

From the outset of the war on Syria in March 2011, member states of the Atlantic Alliance as well as Israel, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have  (covertly) supported the terrorists –including al Nusrah and the ISIS– with a view to destabilizing Syria as a nation state. These actions were implemented in liaison with NATO headquarters in Brussels.

The process of recruitment and training of mercenaries had been sub-contracted to private security companies operating out of the Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. Reports point to the creation of training camps in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In Zayed Military City (UAE), a secret army is in the making” was operated by Xe Services, formerly Blackwater. The UAE deal to establish a military camp for the training of mercenaries was signed in July 2010, nine months before the onslaught of the wars in Libya and Syria. (See Manlio Dinucci, A Secret Army of Mercenaries for the Middle East and North Africa, Il Manifesto. 18 May 2011)

Moreover, confirmed by CNN, security companies on contract to NATO member states were involved in training  Syria “opposition” death squads in the use of chemical weapons:

“The United States and some European allies are using defense contractors to train Syrian rebels on how to secure chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria, a senior U.S. official and several senior diplomats told CNN Sunday. ( CNN Report, December 9, 2012)

NATO Supported the Terrorists in Libya

From the outset of NATO’s  2011 “humanitarian war” on Libya, the Atlantic alliance was working in close liaison with the “pro-Al Qaeda brigades” led by “former” Libya Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) leader Abdul Hakim Belhhadj  (Debka, Pro-Al Qaeda brigades control Qaddafi Tripoli strongholds seized by rebels, August 28, 2011 )

Abdul Hakim Belhhadj  received his military training in a CIA sponsored guerrilla camp in Afghanistan. He constitutes a CIA “intelligence asset” operating in the Libyan war theater. A 2011 report suggested that he had some 1,000 men under his command. (Libyan rebels at pains to distance themselves from extremists – The Globe and Mail, March 12, 2011)

The US-NATO coalition is arming the Jihadists. Weapons are being channeled to the LIFG from Saudi Arabia, which historically, since the outset of the Soviet-Afghan war, has covertly supported Al Qaeda. The Saudis are now providing the rebels, in liaison with Washington and Brussels, with anti-tank rockets and ground-to-air missiles. Photo Tweet Claims To Show Steven Sotloff Fighting With Syrian Mercenaries

Sotloff pictured behind truck mounted machine gun

Global Research

A photo tweet posted by “AzoozF” with an IS logo purportedly shows Steven Sotloff manning a truck mounted machine gun.

It was posted on Wednesday. Arabic text accompanying the photo identifies the man as Sotloff.

The unverified – and in the supposed ISIS video, not shown – beheading of Sotloff is being used as a pretext to launch a war inside Syria against the Saudi and Qatari financed and U.S. military trained Islamic State, formerly ISIS.

“Leading lawmakers in charge of foreign policy reacted Tuesday to the reported beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff by increasing their calls for more congressional involvement and oversight of President Obama’s war on ISIS,” Josh Rogin wrote for The Daily Beast on Tuesday.

Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee are leading the charge.

“The beheading of poor Mr. Sotloff really just brings back that we are dealing with a dangerous adversary… Congress needs to play a vital role and we are determined that the House Foreign Affairs Committee will lead the way,” said Rep. Eliot Engel, a ranking Democrat on the committee. “We believe that before the president can continue beyond 60 days of doing airstrikes in Iraq or anyplace else, he would have to come to Congress and get Congress’s authority to continue.”

Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, is preparing to introduce legislation giving Obama congressional authority to enter Syria and bomb IS.

“This will ensure there’s no question that the president has the legal authority he needs to use airstrikes in Syria,” Nelson said on Tuesday. “We must go after ISIS right away because the U.S. is the only one that can put together a coalition to stop this group that’s intent on barbaric cruelty.”

Editorial: Who benefits from the shooting of the Malaysian plane?

When Malaysian Airways flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, the imperialist media flew into action. Within minutes, and without a shred of evidence, the finger was pointed at Russia. The Ukraine ‘government’ appointed by the US-backed fascist coup alternately cried that it must have been Russia’s doing, and that it must have been the act of ‘Russian separatists’ (anti-fascist self-defence forces). Some ‘journalists’ even claimed to have recordings of east Ukrainian anti-fascists discussing such an operation prior to and during the event.

As it became apparent that the east Ukrainian forces did not possess the required weaponry, however, the Russian army was universally blamed by imperialist media and politicians alike.

British corporate media, meanwhile, have tried to find any handle with which to stir their readers’ outrage, shedding shameless and loud crocodile tears over British victims on the plane. At the same time, they have been demonising any Britons who show support for the anti-fascist cause, including a young man in Yorkshire involved with a solidarity group. They have even labelled anyone going from Britain to the aid of the self-defence forces as ‘fascist’! Goebbels is alive and well, it seems, and working at the Mirror!

The Ukrainian fascist regime hurriedly tried to get its hands on the black box from the crash site, but the anti-fascists beat them to it. They salvaged the boxes while collecting the bodies of the victims (under fire from the fascist forces all the while). Defeating all attempts at sabotage, the anti-fascist forces handed the boxes to the Malaysian authorities along with the bodies of the crash victims, as was appropriate.

Without a shred of evidence, the imperialist media have declared that ‘Putin was responsible’. But anyone prepared to use their heads for thinking rather than as a hat stand may come to a different conclusion.

Who stood to gain from this atrocity? Neither the Russians nor the Donetsk self-defence forces stood to gain anything but the wrath of the world at a time when they are trying to show everyone the truth about the very real mass slaughter being rained down on east Ukrainians by the West-backed mercenaries and fascists.

The Anglo-American imperialists and their puppets, on the other hand, and are trying to gain from this atrocity by blaming it on those whom they are determined to wipe out (the self-defence forces of eastern Ukraine) and on the country that they want to pull into a war (Russia).

Many other facts and questions remain. It is, for example, a fact that the fascists do possess the weapons needed to carry out such an attack. And one has to wonder why the flight was routed over a major conflict zone, or why the pilot was advised to fly lower before his plane was brought down. Why, moreover, were fascist-controlled jets seen flying on a course to intercept the airliner? And what happened to the air control worker who saw those jets?

The Reichstag fire, the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Iraqi weapons of mass destruction … imperialism has a long history of committing crimes to blame on its opponents. It seems extremely likely that the crew and passengers of flight MH17 are the latest in a very long line of victims in the cause of imperialist brigandage and domination.

Ukraine: they shall not pass!

Logo of the All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda"
The battle continues against the fascist hirelings of imperialism.
As the fascist regime in Kiev tore up the ceasefire, trampled on diplomacy and inflicted unbridled terror attacks on the population of Donetsk, Lugansk and Slavyansk, it has become plainer by the day that it is the interests of the Anglo-American and other imperialist powers that these puppets are working, and that their actions are against the interests of the masses of the people of Ukraine, be they in the west or the east of the country.Whilst the army and the Right Sector nazis of the National Guard inflict death and destruction on working-class neighbourhoods of towns and villages of the south and east, the illegitimate ‘president’, media and confectionery oligarch Poroshenko, wants to punish the whole country by implementing the economic shock therapy dictated by the IMF and the EU, slashing pensions, fuel subsidies and public services.Kiev’s reign of terror

The lip-service paid by the junta to its supposed ‘unilateral cease fire’, more honoured in the breach than in the observance, ended abruptly as July dawned and Poroshenko refused point blank to extend the cessation, despite urgent pleas so to do from Russia, Germany and France.

As Moscow observed sourly, Poroshenko’s supposed ‘peace plan’ was more to do with the delivery of an ultimatum than a constructive plan to end hostilities. Indeed, the plan did not even envisage negotiations between Kiev and the People’s Republics, and Poroshenko gave every evidence of wishing to hasten on to ‘Plan B’ without any more ado.

As is now visible to all the world (but largely invisible in the imperialist media), Plan B is to inflict the most vicious and indiscriminate collective punishment upon the largely Russian-speaking population in the south and east of Ukraine, shelling and bombing their towns and cities in the hope that this will overwhelm the self-defence militia.

Making war on ‘his own citizens’ – precisely the charge falsely repeated ad nauseam against President Assad in Syria – has become a sickening daily occurrence, with artillery and air attacks driving many from their homes in terror, thus swelling the flood of refugees into the Rostov area of Russia. The junta itself on 10 July admitted to a civilian death toll of 478, doubtless only the tip of the iceberg.

Typical of the indiscriminate nature of the attacks was the case of the small village of Kondrashovka, which was shelled by Kiev troops soon after the end of the ceasefire. At least five shells hit the settlement, killing seven people and injuring many more. Bodies were torn to bits and scattered across the village.

Despite the enormous heroism of the workers’ militias, and the deep roots they have in their local neighbourhoods, the resistance forces have been obliged to melt temporarily from some of the towns that were seen previously as their strongholds, such as Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, consolidating their forces in other towns that it is hoped will be more readily defensible. True to partisan tradition, small numbers of militia have stayed behind in Slavyansk and Kramatorsk ready to harry the enemy.

Kiev’s military tactics are basically to bludgeon the population with superior firepower day after day, reducing great cities like Lugansk to rubble-strewn ghost towns. To take just one weekend, the night of Saturday 5 July saw at least 80 people treated in Lugansk hospital, 56 of them civilians.

On Sunday, the artillery attack on the city resumed, this time raining shells near the bus and train stations. Meanwhile, heavy aircraft set about attacking the suburbs, like Aleksandrovka. Although the city’s mayor did his best to persuade people to stay, many have fled in terror – just as so many Palestinians fled zionist terror in 1948.

In the middle of all this mayhem, people were collecting signatures for an appeal to Ban Ki-moon for the UN to put a stop to Kiev’s aggression against civilians. The failure of that august body to lift a finger in defence of the Palestinians over more than six decades does not inspire confidence in a happy outcome from that quarter.

Despite the huge odds against which the resistance forces are obliged to fight, there are nevertheless a number of factors that are working in their favour.

As has already been remarked, the self-defence militias spring from the working-class communities they are defending, and thence can be expected to draw much support. Women, too, are engaged in the work of defence, with the formation of more than one women’s battalion.

Memories of the triumph of the Red Army over fascism are never far below the surface, and it is notable that the numerous Russian flags are frequently supplemented by those bearing the hammer and sickle.

The Donbass proletariat is rightly proud of its revolutionary and anti-fascist history. Krasnodon, located in what is now the People’s Republic of Lugansk, was the birthplace during the Great Patriotic War of the underground Komsomol organisation known as the ‘Young Guard’.

Despite the enormous odds stacked against these worthy successors of the partisans, some severe counter-blows have been struck – notably, the bringing down of a number of attack helicopters and the destruction of around 30 Kiev troops as they besieged the village of Zelenopolye in the Lugansk region.

The defence militia struggling to protect the village had reportedly laid their hands on some Grad multiple rocket launchers, which they used to stunning effect. Poroshenko’s response came straight out of the fascist tradition of countering partisan resistance with collective punishment, vowing to “kill hundreds” for every soldier that had lost his life.

Needless to say, the imperialist media went along with Poroshenko’s view of events, painting a picture of regular army lads being gratuitously slaughtered by fanatical terrorists.

It should be added that the ‘regular army’ has demonstrated itself to be unreliable in the extreme in the hands of the fascist junta. On a number of occasions, ordinary soldiers have refused to shoot at their fellow Ukrainians, and some have even defected, taking weapons and vehicles with them.

The soldiers’ morale is not helped by the fact that they are often far from home fighting a war for which they have little stomach. And the families of soldiers waiting to get sent off to the east to fight are very mistrustful, with incidents reported of relatives felling trees and strewing the trunks across the highway to impede the transport of troops.

One reason Right Sector thugs have been pulled into the newly-constituted National Guard is precisely to keep an eye on the wavering ‘regulars’.

Two other factors that stand in favour of the resistance are the divisions between the EU and the US over Ukraine and the discreet diplomatic support afforded by Russia.

As regards the former, a recent speech by US secretary of state John Kerry revealed a strong degree of impatience with the tardiness with which the EU is jumping to Uncle Sam’s bark. It is not enough for Kerry that Ukraine should have been coerced into the Association agreement with the EU; he now requires the Europeans themselves to sign up to the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP)!

He also berated Europe for failing to spend sufficient on defence to meet its commitments to Nato, noting waspishly that: “Clearly, not all allies are going to meet the Nato benchmark of two percent of GDP overnight – or even next year. But it’s time for allies who are below that level to make credible commitments to increase their spending on defence over the next five years.”

Still less encouraging was it for those countries like Germany, whose energy needs require continued good relations with Russia, when Kerry averred that: “After two decades of focusing primarily on our expeditionary missions, the crisis in Ukraine now calls us back to the work that this alliance was originally created to perform.” Namely, taking a stand against what he termed “Putin’s Russia”.

Kerry spoke truer than he knew when he maintained that: “Our entire model of global leadership is at stake.” For, whilst some in the US may yearn nostalgically for the good-old days, when reluctant Europeans could be whipped back into line by appeals to solidarity against a common Soviet enemy, the current resurgence of overproduction crisis is happening in a very different set of circumstances.

Kerry’s pious adjuration that, “together we have to push back against those who try to change sovereign borders by force” rings very hollow. (What else exactly was Nato doing in Yugoslavia?) And at a time when Germany feels obliged to very publicly kick out the USA’s top spy official for snooping on its rival, Kerry’s encouraging yank on the Nato chain will not go down well.

Happily, such dissensions can only strengthen Putin’s diplomatic hand over Ukraine, as has already been evidenced in the joint efforts of Russia, Germany and France to persuade Poroshenko to extend the ceasefire so as to give diplomacy a chance.

Putin noted that: “Unfortunately President Poroshenko took the decision to restart military operations and we – I mean myself and my European colleagues – could not convince him that the road to stable, strong and long-lasting peace does not lie through war,” adding that, “Up until now [Poroshenko] was not directly linked to the order to start military operations but now he has taken on this responsibility fully, not only militarily but also politically.”

Who stands behind the junta?

The attempted fascist crackdown on civilians and resistance alike – including three Russian journalists murdered while trying to report events – is entirely in line with the strategic aims of the most aggressive of the current imperialist players, US imperialism, just as the home-grown fascism of Bandera and co earlier served the strategy of the then most aggressive imperialist power, Germany.

In blatant contradiction to the pledges made by Washington to the revisionist clown and traitor Gorbachev, one former Soviet republic or socialist country after another has been drawn into a state of greater or lesser dependence on imperialism.

The West has shown its gratitude to Russia for having dismantled the defensive Warsaw Treaty Organisation by seeking to subordinate wide swathes of East Europe and the Balkans to Nato control, and by building a string of military bases along Russia’s southern border. Among the countries now in actual membership of the expanded Nato are Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the Baltic states, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and Croatia.

Meanwhile, the EU has played its role too, pursuing a so-called ‘Eastern Partnership’ with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia and Moldova. (Armenia and Belarus, however, consistently maintain good relations with Moscow.) And now that the inconvenience of having an elected government in Kiev unwilling to sign up to an EU Association Agreement has been overcome by the simple expedient of replacing that government with another that will do as it’s told, the agreement has been signed, and the Ukrainian people are now being subjected simultaneously to the political terrors of fascist rule and the economic terrors of being stretched on the IMF rack.

How long will it be before the rest of the population of Ukraine comes to appreciate just how disastrous a deal has been signed up to by the Kiev junta? Perhaps not so long, considering the case of Poland, so happy to have US missile systems in its back garden and one of the most vocal advocates of punitive sanctions against Russia.

Yet Poland’s foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, widely touted to take over from Catherine Ashton as the EU’s top diplomat, had some very harsh things to say about the Polish-US relationship. A Polish news magazine published a transcript of a leaked recording of a conversation Sikorski had with former finance minister Rostowski, in the course of which Sikorski confided: “You know that the Polish-US alliance isn’t worth anything … It is downright harmful, because it creates a false sense of security … Complete bullshit. We’ll get in conflict with the Germans, Russians and we’ll think that everything is super, because we gave the Americans a blowjob. Losers. Complete losers.”

Such disaffection amongst seemingly its best allies spells disaster for the whole strategic thrust of US war policy. Horrific as are the consequences for the inhabitants in both the east and the west of Ukraine, and desperate as imperialism is to accelerate the privatised looting of the mines and steelworks of Ukraine’s industrialised east, the wider aim of the aggression is to push right up to Russia’s own borders, furthering the strategy of containing and neutralising both Russia and China.

Tormented by the incurable crisis of overproduction erupting in the West, US imperialism in particular is clutching at straws, hoping against hope that if it could somehow freeze Russia and China out of the world market it could buy an extended lease of life for its flagging hegemony. It is above all that desperate imperative which forces Washington to rely so heavily upon the shallow neo-nazi scum scraped from the bottom of the bourgeois-nationalist barrel. They will come to regret it.

Zionist Dirty Bitch

By Alan Hart

When I heard the news that Jewish American comedienne Joan Rivers had died, I recalled the images of a passing moment I had with her in the mid 1980s when I was on a coast-to-coast public speaking tour of America to promote the message of my book Arafat Terrorist or Peacemaker? For a few moments I feared that I was going to be the cause of her death from a heart attack.

I had just left a radio studio in San Francisco after an hour-long interview (with adverts every few minutes, of course) in which I had been allowed to explain that Arafat had prepared the ground on his side for peace on terms which any rational government in Israel would accept with relief.

I was on my way out of the building through a long corridor in which two people could just about pass each other without touching. Joan Rivers, the next guest on the show, was approaching, protected by three aggressive looking minders.

As we drew level I stopped and put my book, with Arafat its cover photograph, in front of her face. (When he first saw the picture I had chosen, Arafat said: “Not very pretty”. I replied, “Abu Amar, with great respect you are not very pretty.”)

Joan Rivers stopped, shrieked, buried her head in her hands and seemed to be choking. Her legs also seemed to be close to buckling. One of her three minders pushed me away and against the wall and the other two propelled her towards the studio. No words were exchanged but if looks could kill I would have been killed.

“You deserve to be dead,” Rivers told Palestinians

Obstructing truth-tellersIt was on that tour of America that I was made completely aware of how the Zionist lobby works to make life as difficult as possible for truth-tellers if it fails by bullying and/or blackmail to persuade radio stations not to give them air time.

The usual practice of many American call-in radio shows is to trail their guests a week in advance. This is meant to give listeners who are interested in a particular topic or issue time to think about a question they might like to ask. It also gives the Zionist lobby time to get organized.

In one major American city where I was trailed (I cannot remember which one and identifying it would take research time that I do not have), I was booked for an hour. Every single call-in question was hostile to me and Arafat and everything he represented. Then came a small miracle. At the end of the hour, the host of the show looked at me and then said into the microphone: “Alan, I think we both know what has happened. Can we do another hour?”

For the second hour, which the Zionist lobby had not anticipated and could not fill with its own verbal hit men and women, every single call was from open-minded Americans who wanted to hear what I had to say and ask me sensible questions.

“The most dangerous terrorist organization in the US”

That particular tour was originally scheduled for three weeks. As it happened it was extended to three months by popular demand. It went on so long that my wife came from the UK to be with me for two weeks, and she was sitting next to me in a studio in Chicago when a caller said: “Mr Hart, you won’t leave this city alive.” The show’s host said to the caller: “Are you threatening Mr Hart’s life?” The caller said “Yes”.

That didn’t surprise me because when I arrived in America at the start of the tour an FBI officer requested a meeting with me. He wanted me to know that the most dangerous terrorist organization in the US was the Jewish Defence League (JDL). And he gave me two pieces of advice.

The first was that I should never hire a self-drive car, always go by taxi. (The obvious implication, stated, was that if I was driving myself about a bomb could be placed under the car). The second was that if I stayed more than two days in a hotel in any major city I should never return to it at night if I was walking by the same route.

In 2010 Joan Rivers tweeted a joke about her death. “With all the plastic surgery I’ve had, I’m worried when I die God won’t recognise me.” If she was still alive today, I would say to her something like: “If he does recognise you, perhaps you should worry about whether he will forgive you for saying that, because they voted for Hamas, the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip prison camp deserved what they were getting when Israel was delivering them more death and destruction.

Hands off Ukraine! Hands off Russia!

Hands off Ukraine! Hands off Russia!

Issued by: CPGB-ML
Issued on: 21 August 2014
As we mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, events are unfolding in Europe that portend the start of an inexorable march towards another major war.In 1914, declining imperialist powers Britain, Russia and France went to war against a vigorous upstart competitor in the hopes that by crushing imperialist Germany, they could maintain their power and global domination. In 2014, the declining forces are the imperialist powers of the US, the EU and Japan, while China and Russia are the most important targets of their attempts to save their rotting and decadent system.China is being targeted because it still has a socialist base and has a super-competitive economy, and Russia is being targeted mainly because it has huge energy reserves, which imperialism wants to control, and because it is the only country that currently has the capability to give a serious military rebuff to imperialism.

Both Russia and China have the ability to resist the imperialist looting of their own wealth, and to offer some help to smaller oppressed countries that were previously locked into imperialist control.

When its competitors cannot be stifled by intimidation, threats, tricks or bribery, imperialism resorts to war. Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria and others are suffering tremendously for having dared to demand that their resources should be used to benefit their own people. However, the obstacles to imperialist domination presented by these countries is as nothing compared to those presented by Russia and China.

This is why for years the imperialist powers, led by the US, have been encircling China and Russia with military bases and missile shields. At the same time, they have been drawing countries that were formerly part of the USSR and the eastern bloc into the imperialist sphere of influence (and exploitation) by creating and financing ‘colour revolutions’ that hold out false hopes of a life of ease and plenty (‘freedom’), when what actually awaits most people is unending drudgery and humiliation.

Ukrainians were seduced by a ‘colour revolution’ in 2004, but found that instead of a glittering future they got nothing but economic chaos and disaster. That is why Yanukovych, the ‘evil dictator’ who had been ousted in 2004, was re-elected as president in 2010.

Yanukovych had planned to sign a bilateral trade agreement with the EU in 2014 in the hope of ‘solving’ the country’s economic problems, but in return for the promise of a €610m ‘aid package’ from the IMF, the EU imperialists kept demanding ever-more onerous ‘restructuring’ terms (social-spending cuts and privatisations).

The terms were so suicidal for Ukraine that in the end Yanukovych refused to sign. And so imperialism let loose its ‘democracy movement’ – ie, the treacherous elements in Ukrainian society, for the most part an unconscionable fascist, anti-semitic and violent rabble, financed by the US to the tune of $6bn because they were happy to sell out their country’s interests.

These vile elements, who had never succeeded in winning more than a tiny minority of votes in any Ukrainian election, managed, with the full backing of imperialism, to seize power, despite considerable internal opposition.

This opposition especially but not exclusively came from those whose mother tongue was Russian rather than Ukrainian. In fact, the areas where Russian-speakers were in the majority, like Crimea and eastern Ukraine, immediately chose to secede rather than submit to the fascist ‘government’ that had been imposed by imperialism. Whereas Crimea managed to leave peacefully, the fascists have been waging genocidal warfare on eastern Ukraine to try to force its surrender.

The people of the Donbass have been fighting not because they are Russian nationalists but because they know that what the EU has in mind for their region – once the proud heartland of Soviet industry – is nothing but mothballing and mass unemployment of industrial workers.

Meanwhile, the Kiev junta is slashing pensions and fuel subsidies in line with IMF demands – the stick which follows the carrot of the promised EU loan (which itself will become another heavy burden come pay-back time).

Inciting hatred against Russians and jews won’t fill empty bellies. And if Ukraine persists in its refusal to pay its Russian gas bill and gets cut off, it will take more than fanning the flames of bourgeois nationalism to keep homes warm.

Despite being supportive of the people’s just cause, Russia has been careful to keep out of any intervention in eastern Ukraine. Even so, the imperialists are using and manipulating events as a pretext for their domination drive – in much the same way as the Austrians used the murder of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo (Bosnia) as a pretext for war with Serbia in 1914.

When Malaysian airliner MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, with the tragic loss of nearly 300 innocent lives, imperialist politicians and journalists were unanimous in blaming Russia, without a shred of evidence. And they continue to bay for Russian blood, despite mounting evidence that the plane was actually shot down by the Ukrainian fascists.

The tragedy is being shamelessly used as a pretext for imposing sanctions on Russia, with the aim of weakening the country in advance of a possible future armed attack.

Happily, Russia is in a position to retaliate by stopping the considerable quantities of goods it currently imports from imperialist countries. This retort will either bring imperialism to its senses or increase its frenzied determination to stamp on its rivals with war – even though Russia is just as able to hit back militarily as it is economically.

Imperialism is not a rational system, and no amount of logic can change its insane and inhuman behaviour. The economic necessity for expansion forces our rulers to seek domination – and the urge for domination sooner or later overcomes all sense of self-preservation, plunging us all into war.

The first and second world wars prove that even the victorious capitalist countries that ‘win’ such horrific clashes do so at a terrible price – both in the numbers of the dead and injured, and in the destruction of the wealth and infrastructure that have been built up through the toil of many generations.

But history also teaches us that these infernos can lead to revolutionary change too – such as the October revolution in Russia that followed WW1, and the emergence of the mighty socialist camp that followed WW2.

If we want to put an end to the imperialist drive to war, we need to follow the example of the Bolsheviks in 1917 and overthrow imperialism in its heartlands, purging our society of its crazed imperialist ruling class.

In the meantime, we need to give every possible support to all those resisting imperialist aggression and looting abroad, since they are helping to weaken our common enemy and bringing closer the day when the whole barbaric system will be got rid of for good.

Down with imperialism’s fascist puppets in Ukraine. Victory to the resistance!

Dragging Pak Army in Politics

Map of Pakistan

By Sajjad Shaukat

Prevailing political impasse in the country has deepened, as protesting groups of Pakistan

Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) by Dr. Tahirul

Qadri continue AZADI (Freedom) and INQILAB (Revolution) marches, observing sit-ins at

capital city of Islamabad, blocking sensitive Red Zone area and threatening vital government

buildings. They have negatively impacted the entire nation causing fretful anxiety for all

segments of society. The demonstrations have been prolonged and extended unnecessarily, as

the government of PML (N) led by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could not grab the initiative to

settle the issue through peaceful dialogue due to its slow strategy.

On the one side, emotional speeches of Tahirul Qadri coupled with digging graves, showing

coffin-cloth and Imran Khan’s hard stance to get resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,

pointed at continuity of deadlock and impending perils of violence. One the other side,

government wasted vital time to address the rigging grievances of PTI, coldness and insensitivity

to register FIR against the concerned people, responsible for killings in Model Town, Lahore,

while recent failure of dialogue, rulers’ decision to use force against the protesters, which

resulted into killings in Islamabad by the Police including assaults on the reporters and vehicles

of the private TV channels have further spoiled the situation. It was due to the use of force that

the demonstrators who remained peaceful for several days, removed barriers and reached very

close to the buildings of Prime Minister House, Parliament and Pak Secretariat, while entering

the main building of the Pakistan Television’s headquarters which was vacated by the personnel

of Rangers and Pak Army without any violence.

Unfortunately, since the political crisis intensified, some politicians and most of the media

anchors have continuously been misguiding the general masses by indicating that the ongoing

system of democracy can be derailed, and martial law can be imposed in the country. Some of

them are playing a very negative role in projecting the entire gamut of political standoff between

the government and the protesting parties. By manipulating the political turmoil, created by the

politicians, they have blamed that Army and intelligence agency, ISI are behind Tahirul Qadari

and Imran Khan’s long marches, and sit-ins in Islamabad.

However, the civil-military relations in wake of the prevailing crisis need special analysis, as

some entities are dragging the Pak Army in politics.

In this regard, when PTI and PAT decided to demonstrate before the PM House, PTI president

Javed Hashmi who was also issued notice by Imran Khan regarding expulsion from the party

raised false allegations on September 1, this year. Javad Hashmi blamed that Imran and Qadri

have backing of Army. He parted ways with PTI and asserted that Imran Khan was prompted by

Sheikh Rashid to march towards PM House along with PAT. The estranged leader Hashmi also

said that Chief Justice of the Supreme Courte, Nasirul Mulk had association with the PTI chief

Imran Khan in this respect. But falsehood of Javed Hashmi was exposed when by rubbishing

reports of any association with Imran Khan, the Chief Justice clarified that he had only once met

with the PTI chief, as the acting Chief Election Commissioner about introduction of bio-metric

Even Imran Khan who strongly denounced Hashmi’s accusations, remarked that he never sought

Army and ISI help to resolve political issues, adding that he never supported martial law, and

always struggled for democracy. Tahirul Qadri also rejected Hasmhi’s false accusations.

In this context, on September 1, by taking note of the ongoing crisis and false allegations, a

statement of the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) categorically rejected assertions that

the Army and ISI were backing PTI and PAT in any way in the current political standoff.

It elaborated, “Army is non-political institution and has expressed its unequivocal support

for democracy at numerous occasions. It is unfortunate that Army is dragged into such

controversies…integrity and unity of the army is its strength which it upholds with pride.” The

statement also said, “The news being run on private channels after meeting of the Chief of Army

Staff, General Raheel Sharif with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that the army chief asked the

prime minister to step down or proceed on leave, is totally baseless.”

Javed Hashmi’s sensitivity towards establishment is one thing, but veiled pointing towards Army

for having conveyed a message through Sheikh Rashid is a cynical thought and a jaundiced view

point. It is an ugly attempt to spoil civil-military relations in the country.

Army maintains a totally neutral, having non-political stance. It is, however, deeply concerned

on prevailing political turmoil. On August 20, DG of ISPP, Maj-Gen. Asim Bajwa impartially

stated, “The buildings in the Red Zone (Islamabad) are symbols of state and must be respected,

explaining, “All issues should be resolved through result-oriented dialogue in the interest of the

Meanwhile, the ISPR press release regarding the corps commanders meeting held on August 31,

reaffirmed support to democracy—the conference reviewed with serious concern, the existing

political crisis and the violent turn it has taken. The statement, once again reiterated that the

situation should be resolved politically through dialogue, without recourse to violent means.

In fact, the government itself pulled the Army in politics when on August 28, Prime Minister

Nawaz Sharif asked Gen. Raheel Sharif to intervene and play his role in resolving the ongoing

political crisis. On August 29, Gen. Raheel Sharif met Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri, but he

did not meet Prime Minister Sharif when the latter backed out of his statement, saying in the

National Assembly, on August 29 that the government did not asked the army chief to play any

role of a mediator to bring the current political crisis to an end. As criticism mounts over the

government’s seemingly desperate move to involve the military in the present political crisis,

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told the parliament that it was Tahirul Qadri and Imran Khan who

requested a meeting with Gen. Raheel Sharif.

On the same day, both heads of the PTI and PAT, Khan and Qadri remarked that the

government’s claim that they had requested Army to mediate is nothing, but a blatant lie.

Besides, on August 29, ISPR statement verified that the army chief was playing the role of

facilitator for resolution of the current crisis at the request of the government. Moreover,

contradiction of Prime Minister Nawaz was further exposed when the Federal Minister Interior

Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also justified military’s involvement as the only option out

of the deadlock, saying that the government had asked the army chief to play his facilitative

role. But in his speech, PPP’s Senator Aitzaz Ahsan though indicated that the parliament was

standing with the prime minister and government—would not fall, but, he severely criticized the

government about Model Town incident, corruption and so on.

In wake of the political uncertainly, join session of the parliament started on September 2. In

their fierce speeches, while, indirectly criticizing army, leaders of PML (N) and some other

parliamentarians said that they would oppose any move which could derail democracy in the

country by rejecting the unconstitutional demands of PTI and PAT including the resignation of

the Prime Minister Nawaz and the dissolution of the National Assembly.

Now, again, a team consisting of the leaders of PPP and Jamaat-e-Islami including some other

political persons who have met Imran Khan, Tahirul Qadri and government’s top officials are

hopeful that they would conclude an agreement between these rival entities, as they have become

guarantors in this respect, and would defuse the tension through dialogue.

Undoubtedly, democracy has displayed its success in the west, but, it has proved to be fruitless

in Pakistan. Therefore, it is generally said that “any instrument can be misused.” Pakistan’s

politicians and media have always claimed that they nourish democratic ideals, but, we could not

establish this system on a strong footing due to irresponsible approach of our political entities

It is noteworthy that in 2011, during the Memogate case, some political entities and media

commentators were saying that martial law will be imposed in the country. The then Chief of

Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani stated, “The Pakistan Army has and will continue to

support democratic process in the country.” As Army was acting upon the principle of non-
interference in political affairs, therefore, the previous government completed its tenure.

At this critical juncture, our Armed Forces are successfully obtaining their objectives in North

Waziristan Agency (NWA) through military operation Zarb-e-Azb against the terrorists who had

challenged the writ of the state, and had frightened the entire nation by their terror-acts. Besides

helping the Internally Displaced Persons of the NWA, our security forces are engaged in coping

with the militants’ subversive activities in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi and other

parts of the country including tribal areas. Externally, Pak Army and Rangers have boldly been

responding to India’s unprovoked firing at the Line of Control in Kashmir including Working

Boundary in Sialkot and other sectors, and have also been facing cross-border terrorism from

Afghanistan side, encountering heavily-armed militants who from time to time, target check

posts of the Army, and other civil and military installations. So, Army does not want to involve

in political issues. In this context, the mediating role of Army and Javed Hashmi’s statement was

acrimoniously politicized which brought embarrassment for Army high command and caused

delay in resolution of the crisis. Army never sent any message to Imran Khan through Sheikh

Rashid to join PAT for marching towards the PM House.

Some media analysts and political leaders tend to show their loyalties to top political leadership

by mentioning about the possibility of military take over and they do not hesitate in insinuating

against Army for its hidden role in present crisis. Such elements have an agenda to spoil civil-

It is mentionable that external elements like India are keenly studying the developments, taking

place in Pakistan and are preparing wicked schemes to damage Pakistan’s interests. Having

cancelled scheduled secretary-level talks with Pakistan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

asserted that Pakistan was too weak to fight a conventional war, ceasefire violations along

LOC—and least mentioning about Indian desire to conduct business and trade with Pakistan. No

doubt, it indicates enemy’s intentions. Hence, there is a dire need to end the political impasse and

learn how to hold own Army in high esteem.

For the purpose, government must take the initiative, using comprehensive strategy and visionary

approach to resolve the issue by take holding dialogue with PTI and PAT leaders. Some

compensation has to be paid for earlier loss of precious time to address the grievances of the

Army as a prestigious institution fully supports the democratic system and averts all skepticism

of derailing democracy. Such thoughts are ugly in nature and must not be attributed towards

pro-democratic Army. Although Army is concerned about the prevailing political chaos, yet it

maintains a totally neutral stance. Therefore, sense must prevail upon those who tend to shift the

blame on Army and ISI. As these hostile internal entities have failed in resolving the ongoing

grave crisis, they have been dragging Pak Army in politics.

Zbigniew Brzezinski… He’s the guy who armed and trained extreme nut jobs to battle the Soviets who, in spite of all their faults, were trying to modernize Afghanistan.

He’s the guy who gave the Taliban and Bin Laden blank checks for weapons, training and propaganda support. All this happened back in 1979. Reagan and Bush I continued it for 12 years. – See more at:
