Touching tributes remember children killed in Gaza

Gaza family Grief

A number of art installations were erected at iconic Dublin landmarks on Wednesday to remember children killed by Israel’s bombardment of Gaza a year ago. Over 550 Palestinians died in the 50-day assault in July and August of 2014.

The name and age of each child killed was written on 556 white ribbons tied to the Ha’Penny Bridge on the River Liffey in central Dublin overnight. On Thursday morning, passers-by paused to read and photograph their names. Photos by Allen Kiely on Flickr.

On Wednesday, 556 little white t-shirts were stood on Sandymount Strand in south Dublin. The beach location symbolised the four children killed by Israeli missiles as they played football on a beach in Gaza. Named NO MORE – Dublin Remembers Gaza, the installation was organised by PalFest Ireland, a group working to “demonstrate solidarity between the Irish arts community and the people of Palestine”.

The Irish charity Trocaire also tied ribbons to Merrion Square adjacent to the Irish parliament.

And at the Body and Soul music festival in Ireland in September 2014, the names of child victims were also hung at an installation.

A question of accountability

UN chief Ban Ki-moon is accused of bowing to political pressure in his delisting of Israel from the annex of worst offenders in the UN’s annual Children in War report. Israel and armed Palestinian groups were listed in the draft report prepared by the UN’s Special Representative but later removed by Ki-moon. He refused to answer questions about this.

The UN report into Operation Protective Edge outlined abuses on both sides; the overwhelming cause of casualties was due to Israel’s ceaseless bombardment in a disproportionate responseto rockets from Gaza. Some 2,251 Palestinians were killed, almost two thirds of them civilians; 67 Israeli soldiers were killed, and six civilians in Israel.

Our story on the delisting of Israel:

Sacramento Zionist rabbi wants Amazon to pull Holocaust-denial books

LA Times

A California rabbi is urging Amazon to stop selling books that promote Holocaust denial, calling the controversial literature “blatant anti-Semitism,” CBS-TV Sacramento reports.

Rabbi Mendy Cohen, the co-founder of Chabad of Sacramento, says the online retailer should pull the books from its inventory. He told the station that he is the descendant of a Holocaust victim, saying, “My great-grandfather was burnt in a synagogue alive with 500 Jews that the Nazis burned.”

Cohen’s plea comes days after Amazon pulled merchandise depicting the Confederate flag from its site. The flag is widely seen as a symbol of racism, and has been adopted by some white supremacist groups as an emblem.

Several books by Holocaust deniers are currently available for purchase through Amazon. Richard Harwood’s “Did Six Million Really Die?: The Truth at Last,” a 1974 pamphlet that has been banned in Germany, is ranked No. 78 on the retailer’s list of bestselling Kindle books about the Holocaust.

Another book, “The Six Million: Fact or Fiction?” by Peter Winter, is ranked No. 64 on Amazon’s German history bestseller list. The book has received several customer reviews, with most readers giving the book either one star or five stars.

One of the negative reviews states that “Amazon should be ashamed to sell this junk!” A customer who gave the book five stars writes, “I will never think of WW2 in the same way…great insight..very brave Author thank you.”

In an article on the conservative website the Daily Caller published last month, reporter Blake Neff listed 13 items that Amazon was still selling after removing Confederate flags from its store. The list includes the Holocaust denial book “The Holocaust Hoax Exposed: Debunking the 20th Century’s Greatest Fabrication” by Victor Thorn, which is still for sale on Amazon.

Some of the other items on the list appear to have been pulled, including a swastika pendant, which is listed as “currently unavailable,” and an armband featuring the logo of the SS, the Nazi paramilitary group, which has apparently been removed from the site altogether.

Denying the Holocaust is illegal in some countries, including Germany, Israel and Poland. No such law exists in the United States.

Memo to Greece: Make War Not Love with Goldman Sachs

By Marshall Auerback and Randall Wray

In recent weeks, there has been much discussion about what to do about Greece. These questions become all the more relevant as the country attempts to float a multibillion-euro bond issue later this week. The Financial Times has called this fund-raising a critical test of Greece’s credibility in financial markets as it battles with a spiraling debt crisis and strikes.  The “credibility” of the financial markets is an important consideration in a country which has functionally ceded its sovereign ability to create currency, and thus remains dependent on the vagaries of the very banking institutions which helped create the mess in the first place.

Maybe Greece should secede from the European Union and default on its euro debt? Or go hat-in-hand to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to beg for loans while promising to clean up its act? Or to the stronger Euro nations, hoping for charitable acts of forgiveness? Unfortunately, all of these options are going to mean a lot of pain and suffering for an economy that is already sinking rapidly.

And it is questionable whether any of them provide long term viable answers. Polls show that given the perception of fiscal excesses of Greece and the other countries on the periphery, the public in Germany opposes a bailout of these countries at its expense by a significant margin. Periphery countries such as Ireland that have already undertaken harsh austerity measures also oppose the notion of a bailout, despite-nay, because of — the tremendous pain already inflicted on their own respective economies (in Ireland’s case, the banks are probably insolvent as well). The IMF route is also problematic, given that Greece probably doesn’t qualify under normal IMF standards, and many euro zone nations would find this unpalatable from an ideological standpoint, as it would mean ceding control of EU macro policy to an external international institution with strong US influence.

The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted an article by Simon Johnson and Peter Boone, lamenting that the demands being foisted on Greece and other struggling Euronations would “massively curtail demand, lower wages and reduce the public sector workforce. The last time we saw this kind of precipitate fiscal austerity — when nations were tied to the gold standard — it contributed to the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s”. Where we disagree with Johnson and Boone is the suggestion that the IMF be brought in to craft a solution. Any help from this organization will come with tight strings attached — indeed, with a noose around Greece’s neck. Germany and France would be crazy to commit their scarce euros to a bail-out of Greece since they face both internal threats from their own taxpayers and external threats from financial vampires who are looking for yet another nation to attack.

Here’s a more appropriate action: declare war on Goldman Sachs and other global financial firms that created this mess. Send the troops, the planes, the tanks, and the ships. Attack every outpost of the saboteurs on European soil. Blockade the airports and ports. Make Wall Street traders and CEOs fear for their lives, or at least for their freedom to travel. Build some Guantanamo-like facility to hold these enemy financial combatants until they can be tried, convicted, and properly punished.

OK, if a literal armed attack on Goldman is too far-fetched, then go after the firm using the full force of the regulatory and legal systems. Close the offices and go through the files with a fine-tooth comb. Issue subpoenas to all non-clerical staff for court appearances. Make the internal emails public. Post the names of all managers and traders on Interpol. Arrest anyone who tries to board a plane, train, or boat; confiscate their passports; revoke their visas and work permits; and put a hold on their bank accounts until culpability can be assessed. Make life at least as miserable for them as it now is for Europe’s tens of millions of unemployed workers.

We know that the Obama administration will not go after the banksters that created this global financial calamity. It has been thoroughly co-opted by Wall Street’s fifth column-who hold most of the important posts in the administration. Europe has even more at stake and has shown somewhat more willingness to take action. Perhaps our only hope for retribution lies there.

Some might believe the term “banksters” is too mean. Surely Wall Street was just doing its job-providing the financial services wanted by the world. Yes, it all turned out a tad unfortunate but no one could have foreseen that so many of the financial innovations would turn into black swans. And hasn’t Wall Street learned its lesson and changed its practices? Fat chance. We know from internal emails that everyone on Wall Street saw this coming-indeed, they sold trash assets and placed bets that they would crater. The crisis was not a mistake-it was the foregone conclusion. The FBI warned of an epidemic of fraud back in 2004-with 80% of the fraud on the part of lenders. As Bill Black has been warning since the days of the Saving and Loan crisis, the most devastating kind of fraud is the “control fraud”, perpetrated by the financial institution’s management. Wall Street is, and was, run by control frauds. Not only were they busy defrauding the borrowers, like Greece, but they were simultaneously defrauding the owners of the firms they ran. Now add to that list the taxpayers that bailed out the firms. And Goldman is front and center when it comes to bad apples.

Lest anyone believe that Goldman’s executives were somehow unaware of bad deals done by rogue traders, William Cohan reports that top management unloaded their Goldman stocks in March 2008 when Bear crashed, and again when Lehman collapsed in September 2008. Why? Quite simple: they knew the firm was full of toxic waste that it would not be able to continue to unload on suckers-and the only protection it had came from AIG, which it knew to be a bad counter-party. Hence on March 19, Jack Levy (co-chair of M&As) sold over $5 million of Goldman’s stock and bet against 60,000 more shares; Gerald Corrigan (former head of the NY Fed who was rewarded for that tenure with a position as managing director of Goldman) sold 15,000 shares in March; Jon Winkelried (Goldman’s co-president) sold 20,000 shares. After the Lehman fiasco, Levy sold over $6 million of Goldman shares and Masanori Mochida (head of Goldman in Japan) sold $56 million worth. The bloodletting by top management only stopped when Goldman got Geithner’s NYFed to produce a bail-out for AIG, which of course turned around and funneled government money to Goldman. With the government rescue, the control frauds decided it was safe to stop betting against their firm. So much for the “savvy businessmen” that President Obama believes to be in charge of Wall Street firms like Goldman.

From 2001 through November 2009 (note the date-a full year after Lehman) Goldman created financial instruments to hide European government debt, for example through currency trades or by pushing debt into the future. But not only did Goldman and other financial firms help and encourage Greece to take on more debt, they also brokered credit default swaps on Greece’s debt-making income on bets that Greece would default. No doubt they also took positions as the financial conditions deteriorated-betting on default and driving up CDS spreads.

But it gets even worse: An article by the German newspaper, Handelsblatt, (”Die Fieberkurve der griechischen Schuldenkrise”, Feb. 20, 2010) strongly indicates that AIG, everybody’s favorite poster boy for financial deviancy, may have been the party which sold the credit default swaps on Greece (English translation here).

Generally, speaking, these CDSs lead to credit downgrades by ratings agencies, which drive spreads higher. In other words, Wall Street, led here by Goldman and AIG, helped to create the debt, then helped to create the hysteria about possible defaults. As CDS prices rise and Greece’s credit rating collapses, the interest rate it must pay on bonds rises-fueling a death spiral because it cannot cut spending or raise taxes sufficiently to reduce its deficit.

Having been bailed out by the Obama Administration, Wall Street firms are already eying other victims (and for allowing these kinds of activities to continue, the US Treasury remains indirectly complicit, another good reason why one shouldn’t expect any action coming out of Washington). Since the economic collapse is causing all Euronations to run larger budget deficits and at the same time is raising CDS prices and interest rates, it is easy to pick off nation after nation. This will not stop with Greece, so it is in the interest of Euroland to stop the vampires now.

With Washington unlikely to do anything to constrain Goldman, it looks like the European Union, which is launching a major audit, just might banish the bank from dealing in government debt. The problem is that CDS markets are essentially unregulated so such a ban will not prevent Wall Street from bringing down more countries-because they do not have to hold debt in order to bet against it using CDSs. These kinds of derivatives have already brought down an entire continent — Asia — in the late 1990s , and yet authorities are still standing by and basically doing nothing when CDSs are being used again to speculatively attack Euroland. The absence of sanctions last year, when we had a chance to deal with this problem once and for all, has simply induced even more outrageous and fundamentally anti-social behavior. It has pitted neighbor against neighbor-with, for example, Germany and Greece lobbing insults at one another (Greece has requested reparations for WWII damages; Germany has complained about subsidizing what it perceives to be excessive social spending in Greece).

Of course, as far as Greece goes, the claim now is that these types of off balance sheet transactions in which Goldman and others engaged were not strictly “illegal” under EU law. But these are precisely the kinds of “shadow banking transactions” that almost brought down the global financial system 18 months ago. Literally a year after the Lehman bankruptcy — MONTHS after Goldman itself was saved from total ruin, it was again engaging in these kinds of deals.

And it wasn’t exactly a low-level functionary or “rogue trader” who was carrying out these transactions on behalf of Goldman. Gary Cohn is Lloyd “We’re doing God’s work” Blankfein’s number 2 man. So it’s hard to believe that St. Lloyd did not sanction the activities as well in advance of collecting his “modest” $9m bonus for last year’s work.

If these are examples of Obama’s savvy businessmen“, then heaven help the global economy. The transaction highlighted, if reported that way in the private sector, would be accounting fraud. Fraud – “Go to jail, do not pass Go” fraud. That senior bankers had no problem in structuring/recommending/selling such deals to cash-strapped governments should probably not surprise us at this point. However, it would be interesting to know if the prop trading desks of those same investment banks, purely by coincidence of course, then took long CDS (short the credit) positions in the credit of the countries doing the hidden swaps. A proper legal investigation by the EU could reveal this and certainly help to uncover much of the financial chicanery which has done so much destruction to the global economy over the past several years.

In this country, we have had a “war on terror” and a “war on drugs” and yet we refuse to declare war on these financial weapons of mass destruction. We all remember Jimmy Carter’s “MEOW”-the attempt to attack creeping inflation that was said to sap the strength of the US economy in the late 1970s. But Europe-and indeed the entire globe-faces a much more dangerous and immediate threat from Wall Street’s banksters. They created this mess and are not only profiting from it, but are actively preventing recovery. They are causing unemployment, starvation, destruction of lives, and even violence and terrorism across the world. They are certainly more dangerous than the inflation of the 1970s, and arguably have disrupted more lives than Osama bin Laden-whose actions led the US to undertake military actions in at least three countries. That should provide ample justification for Greece’s declaration of figurative war on Manhattan.

However, in an ironic twist of fate, it was just announced that Petros Christodoulou will take over as the head of Greece’s national debt management agency. He worked as the head of derivatives at JP Morgan, and also previously worked at Goldman-the firm that got Greece into all this trouble!

Dimitri Papadimitriou has recently made what we consider to be an important plea for moderation of the hysteria about Greece’s debt. Writing in the Financial Times, he complained that “The plethora of articles in your pages and others, some arguing in favour and other against a bail-out, contribute to market confusion and drive the country’s financing costs to record levels. It is not yet clear that a bail-out is even needed, but this market confusion is rendering the government’s ability to achieve its deficit goals ever more difficult.”

Indeed, we suspect that the same financial firms that helped to get Greece into its predicament are profiting from — and stoking the fires of — the hysteria. He goes on, “what Greece really needs now is a holiday from further market confusion being created by contradictory, alarmist public commentary”.

Greece, Euroland in general, and the rest of the world all need a holiday from the manipulation and destruction of our economies by Wall Street firms that profit from speculative bubbles, from burying firms, households, and governments under mountains and debt, and even from the crises that they create. Governments all over the globe should use all legal means at their disposal to ferret out the bad faith and even fraudulent deals that global financial behemoths are foisting on us.

Iran newspaper: If US attacks us, White House would be destroyed in 10 minutes

ed note–assuming that this is an accurate statement, i.e. that all the translations were done accurately and weren’t ‘spiced up’ like the JMSM’s translation of former Iranian Pres. Ahmadinejad’s ‘wipe Israel off the map’ statement, it suggests some very interesting implications.

Despite the poetic and metaphor-rich language that is infamously part of the Middle Eastern mind and its accompanying language, nevertheless the White House being ‘destroyed in 10 minutes’ pretty much seems to mean one thing and one thing only–a WMD of some type going off in DC, and therefore, It may be–likely or unlikely as it is–that the reluctance on the part of the US to ‘deal’ with Iran in the same the way that she has dealt with Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc, is this very scenario, not as a result of Iranian nukes, but rather those of other countries whose interests lie in keeping Iran intact an reigning in the US, such as the Russians, Chinese or even Pakistanis.

Let’s face it, when has America EVER dealt with another nation based upon such notions as ‘international law’ or ‘sovereignty of nations’? America understands one thing and one thing only–the barrel of a gun, and it may very well be that the US understands that a war with Iran means a war with any one or all of the aforementioned players and has decided therefore that it is ‘bridge too far’.

Times of Israel

An Iranian newspaper affiliated with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned that the White House would be “destroyed in under 10 minutes” were Iran’s nuclear facilities to come under attack, implied that the US was “on its deathbed” and argued that a nuclear deal with the US-led world powers would contradict the Quran, the media watchdog MEMRI reported.

“Let us have faith that America is incapable of any misstep [against Iran], and that it cannot even attack Iranian facilities without the White House being destroyed in under 10 minutes,” the editorial said, according to MEMRI. “Let us have faith that the old ‘village leader’ [i.e. the US] has fallen onto his deathbed, and that even in his youth, he never made the mistake [of daring to attack Iran], and that he, like Israel, remains mired in quicksand.”

The conservative, Khamenei-linked Iranian daily Kayhan published the comments in a June 17 editorial, MEMRI said Friday.

The Kayhan editorial said Iran was currently in a situation similar to that of the early battles of Islam, when Muhammad won the Battle of Badr and annihilated the Jews of Khaybar, MEMRI said. The newspaper called on the Iranian nation to use the month of Ramadan to redeem Islam, “which is entangled by the Jews’ deception” and by the trickery of the US – “The Great Satan” – and Britain – “the wily fox.”

Criticizing former president Hashemi Rafsanjani and current President Hassan Rouhani for seeking to reach a nuclear agreement with the US, the editorial said such attempts contradict the Quranic order against making pacts with the enemy.

NAZI regime: Rules of engagement now same for Jewish offenders, Palestinians

‘A Jew who breaks the law is an enemy,’ soldiers told regarding clashes with right-wing activists

ed note–now waaaaiiiiiit just a minute here….We have been told–in SCREECHING TONES MIND YOU–that Israel does not engage in partiality…That Palestinians ARE NOT singled out and given harsher treatment than Jews, and that anyone alleging such a thing is a filthy anti-Semite who loves Adolph Hitler and wants to bring about another Hollercost…

But now, we are being told that the playing field is being leveled and the preferential treatment that violent Jews received in the past is no longer applicable?

In other words, they were lying through their yellow, crud-covered teeth when they reacted with all the typical Jewish theatrics over the charges of partiality and favoritism?

We’ll see just how ‘impartial’ they are. Will they shoot dead violent Jewish terrorists for throwing stones, like they do Palestinian children? Will they bulldoze the houses of violent Jewish terrorists who blow things up?

I won’t be holding my breath waiting for it, and neither should anyone else.

Times of Israel

The Israel Defense Forces has revised its rules of engagement in the West Bank to address violent acts by Israeli settlers, who will now be treated in the same fashion as Palestinians who endanger soldiers, residents or property.

Against a backdrop of attacks by some far-right Jewish activists on Palestinians, army installations and vehicles, and even soldiers, new orders have instructed that soldiers eliminate the distinction between Palestinian and Israeli attackers in enforcing the law, the Ynet news site reported Monday.

According to a senior IDF officer quoted in the report, soldiers who refuse orders to confront and detain settlers may face prosecution.

“We explain to the soldiers that there is no difference between a lawless Palestinian and a Jew; there is no special procedure for arresting Palestinian suspects [over Jewish ones],” the officer explained.

“A Jew who breaks the law is an enemy. A soldier who stands by only harms the IDF,” he said.

According to the directive, soldiers must take action if Jewish activists cross one of four “red lines”: causing damage to Arab property or committing violence against Palestinians, throwing stones at security forces, verbally abusing soldiers or police, or causing damage to IDF property.

Soldiers noted, however, that although the directive is occasionally mentioned in briefings, it is not heavily enforced, because soldiers who find themselves separating Palestinians from settlers during a riot, as well as those who find themselves targeted by settlers’ violence, are often too “confused” to react.

“It’s difficult for us to imagine that we have to deal with a stone-throwing settler the same way we deal with a stone-throwing Palestinian. After all, we can’t [comprehend] forcing [a settler] to the ground, cuffing him, or shooting into the air when he approaches. The maximum we would do is yell at him to stop and then call the police,” an IDF officer from the Nahal brigade, who served in the West Bank, was quoted as saying.

Another soldier noted that many settlers serve in combat units posted to the West Bank and thus could find themselves face-to-face with family and friends from home.

“There are always religious soldiers, some of whom live in settlements, and they do not feel comfortable in these situations going against their relatives or friends. So you look to the commander, and by the time he finally responds, the event is over,” the soldier said.

The IDF indicated, however, that it has and will continue to court-martial soldiers who stand by or refuse orders to restrain and detain Israelis committing violence in the West Bank.

In an incident during last summer’s Gaza war, soldiers posted in Hebron were court-martialed for failing to prevent a Jewish girl from throwing rocks at Palestinians. The army did not say what punishment they received.

Last year, a brief media storm erupted after IDF vehicles and property were vandalized in the flashpoint settlement of Yitzhar, whereupon Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon posted a military presence to the settlement’s yeshiva.

‘Iranian embassy’ to open in Jerusalem next month

A new “Iranian embassy” is due to open in Jerusalem next month.

However, this will be no ordinary embassy. It will be established as part of a project by a group of local Israeli activists and artists plans to present a “positive movement,” instead of the “negative trend, which divides and frightens us.”

Tehran and Jerusalem once enjoyed warm diplomatic ties but after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, the situation took a turn for the worse and the two countries have been at loggerheads ever since.

The project organized by Hamabul Art Collective aims to highlight the relationship that once existed between the two countries.

The embassy will “show different aspects than those the media has been feeding us,” according to the group’s Facebook page.

Matan Pinkas, one of the organizers of the project, said the project aims to “leave the conflict at the level of the leaders and not between the peoples.”

“Before the revolution, Israel made a mistake when it supported the Shah of Iran, who hurt his people. We’re saying, ‘We made a mistake, we hurt you.’ That is something you can do in the presence of the Iranian ambassador to Israel. In every Knesset election, the security issue concerning Iran comes up again and again. We wanted to challenge the very essence of an embassy – by establishing an embassy that will represent a culture, not a government,” he said, according to Zionist daily Haaretz.

In a somewhat brave move in a country whose government sees Tehran as a bitter enemy, the organizers of the project plan to wave Iranian flags in various city centers.

Organizer Pinkas understands that this may be a difficult. “I waved the Iranian flags a bit in Tel Aviv, to create a teaser,” he said, according to Zionist Haaretz. “People said to me, ‘It’s better to burn that flag.’ Because of the angry looks I was getting, I put the flags back in the bag so they wouldn’t take them away from me. I hope they won’t respond aggressively to the embassy.”

Two American Jews held for two days at Ben-Gurion, denied entry to I$raHell

 talmud 3d Final

Arriving in I$raHell for a wedding celebration, the two were turned away on suspicion of belonging to the Black Hebrew Community.

An American convert to Judaism and her 10-year-old son were detained for almost 48 hours in a holding cell at Ben-Gurion Airport before being denied entry to Israel and placed on a return flight to the US.

Idit Malka and her son Kahxin from Cape Coral, Florida had arrived on June 12 to celebrate the wedding of Malka’s sister who lives in Yeroham, and to spend time with her five other siblings, all of whom live in Israel.

According to the Population and Immigration Authority, Malka and her son were turned away from the country because of suspicions she belongs to the Black Hebrew community and was planning to remain in Israel instead of using her return ticket to the US on August 20.

Malka, in an interview with the Post denied the accusation. According to the 40-year-old Malka, her family moved to Israel when she was young and belonged to the Black Hebrew community but separated from the movement due to ideological differences when she was 13 years old in 1987.

“None of my sibling belong to the community in Dimona,  and I have been living as a Jew my entire adult life,” Malka said, adding that after returning to the US in her teens, she underwent a Reform conversion to Judaism in 1995 and a Conservative conversion in 2004, two years before immigrating to Israel.

When she applied for Israeli citizenship upon arrival in 2006, Malka claims she was put through a bureaucratic tangle that lasted four years. With no end in sight, she and her children decided to return to the US in 2010.

The June trip was her first journey back to Israel since she left, but it ended before it even began.

“As soon as we arrived at the border control, the clerk took us to a sitting room,” said Malka. “I waited there for a good hour, until a woman came out and said that we were being returned. When I asked why, she asked me ‘why are you here?’  I told her that I was there for our summer vacation, to visit family and to attend my sister’s wedding. But I feel the denial of entry was made before I even had a chance to speak with anyone.”

In its response to a query from The Post, the Population and Immigration Authority wrote that Malka arrived at the airport without prior coordination with the Authority, she changed her version of why she was visiting and she became violent and abusive when told her entry was being denied.

“I told them from the beginning my reason for coming to Israel,” said Malka. “Once we were detained, we were never given any reason other than one female agent screaming at me ‘Eretz Israel isn’t a country for ‘cushim.’ [derogatory Hebrew for black-skinned]  At that point, being so tired and humiliated, I did open my mouth and curse at her. But I was never violent as they claimed.”

Malka, who said she was allowed one phone call, contacted one of her brothers who arranged an appeal to an on-call judge. The judge ruled to uphold the denial of entry, and she and her son were put on a return flight to Florida.

“If she had requested permission to come to Israel ahead of time, she would have been rejected and she could have prevented this from the beginning,” said the spokesman for the PIBA, Sabine Hadad.

According to the Foreign Ministry website, the Black Hebrew community has become an integral segment of Israeli society since the Interior Ministry granted them permanent residency  in 2003. This followed a multi-decade battle that began shortly after the first members of the community arrived in Israel in 1969 led by Ben Ammi Ben-Israel .

The Chief Rabbinate didn’t recognize them as Jews according to the Law of Return and their status remained in limbo until 1990 when they were issued  B/1 visas, followed by temporary residency a year later.  According to the site, more than 100 of 2,500-strong Black Hebrew community are currently serving in the IDF.

Nicole Maor, a representative from the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC), which helped Malka during her four-year-effort to become an Israeli citizen, said Monday that African-American converts to Judaism will often encounter problems upon entry into Israel because the legitimacy of their conversions are questioned by the Interior Ministry. In addition, African-Americans who plan to stay in Israel for extended periods or make aliya are scrutinized more due to suspicions that they will join the Black Hebrew community.

Back home in Cape Coral, Malka said she still hasn’t come to terms with how she was treated upon arrival in Israel last month.
“My head was spinning,” she said. “I have a 10-year-old who wanted to visit his cousins and family, and he’s had his summer vacation ruined in the most horrific way.”

“As an American citizen, I shouldn’t need prior coordination to visit Israel.  And a Jew does not need to coordinate before visiting her home land.”

Nazi enters Syria with tanks & bulldozers to clear refugee camp near border

Nazi military task force, accompanied by tanks and bulldozers, crossed about 500 yards into Syrian territory near Quneitra recently and dismantled a refugee camp in the area, Arab news outlets reported Thursday.

According to the reports, the refugee camp, consisting of tin huts and tents, was built in an area controlled by Zio-Wahhabi Nusra Front and was home to dozens of Syrian families that had fled the nearby fighting.

The reports said the camp was located on about 10 acres of land in a grove adjacent to the illegally occupied Palestine.

In recent weeks, members of Palestinian Druze minority have accused the Zio-Wahhabi Nusra Front of targeting their brethren inside Syria and have expressed concerns that NAZI regime has been treating its wounded fighters.

Analyst Stephane Cohen, a former liaison between the NAZI army and United Nations peacekeeping forces, said NAZI regime has treated more than 1,600 Syrians since the conflict began in 2011.

US soldiers opposed to war now find Canada less hospitable

When Army Sgt. Patrick Hart decided a decade ago that he would not serve in the war in Iraq, he expected to follow the same path as thousands of American war resisters during the Vietnam era and take refuge across the border.

But after five years of wrangling with the Canadian immigration system, he came back to the U.S. — and ended up in a military prison.

The country that once welcomed war resisters has developed a much different reputation during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan: Supporters say no U.S. soldier who has sought legal residence in Canada, either as a refugee or on humanitarian grounds, has been successful.

“Nobody’s won,” said Hart, a Buffalo native who exhausted his legal options then turned himself in to the Army, was court-martialed for desertion and sentenced to two years in prison.

There are an estimated two dozen U.S. military members still waiting out their fate in Canada, and the resisters’ movement is seen as nearing a crossroads. With a national election three months away, supporters are hopeful for a Liberal Party victory and more sympathetic stance toward American military exiles, but bracing for the possibility Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper wins re-election.

Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau has not committed to letting the resisters stay, but many are buoyed by his family history. It was his father, Pierre Trudeau, who while prime minister during the Vietnam War said Canada should be “a refuge from militarism.”

“Why not do it again? It’s only a couple of dozen people,” said Michelle Robidoux, spokeswoman for the War Resisters Support Campaign in Toronto, which has been lobbying members of Parliament.

After a flurry early on, between 2004 and 2006, it’s been at least four years since any known residency requests have been filed, Robidoux said.

Besides Hart, at least three other soldiers who were deported or left Canada have been sent to prison: Pfc. Kim Rivera, a mother of five, was sentenced in 2013 to 10 months; Spc. Clifford Cornell of Mountain Home, Arkansas, received a one-year term in 2009, and Pfc. Robin Long of Boise, Idaho, was sentenced in 2008 to 15 months.

Some deserters face court-martial but the majority are discharged on less-than-honorable terms. Army officials said more than 20,000 soldiers have deserted since 2006.

Canada’s immigration laws have tightened since the Vietnam War, the support campaign said, giving U.S. soldiers few options other than to try for refugee status based on the fear of persecution if made to go home.

Government guidance issued to immigration officers in 2010 requires them to consult supervisors on U.S. military cases and spells out that desertion is a crime that may render those who’ve left the military as criminally inadmissible to Canada.

“Military deserters from the United States are not genuine refugees under the internationally accepted meaning of the term,” Citizenship and Immigration Canada spokeswoman Nancy Caron said in an emailed statement. “These unfounded claims clog up our system for genuine refugees who are actually fleeing persecution.”

It’s a strikingly different stance from what Bruce Beyer saw when he found a safe haven in Canada and spent five years there after refusing induction into the Army during the Vietnam War.

“The word is definitely out in the anti-war community that going to Canada is not beneficial,” said Beyer, of Buffalo, who returned to the United States in 1977 and has publicly supported the current resisters.

Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board does not track claim types and could not provide the number of claims made by American soldiers, spokesman Robert Gervais said. He said each case is decided on merits.

Robidoux estimated the number of claims filed at 45. She said about two dozen soldiers remain in the country while appealing decisions or pursuing other action. One of them, Rodney Watson, has sought sanctuary in a Vancouver church for nearly six years to avoid a second tour in Iraq.

Both Watson and Hart spoke out publicly against the war after arriving in Canada, and Hart believes his lengthy prison sentence was a direct result. Prosecutors sealed their desertion case against him with clips from anti-war rallies that captured him saying he had no plans to return.

Hart finally did, he said, after deciding with his wife, Jill, that it would be best for their son, now 13, to leave Canada on their own terms.

“We had kind of run the course of legal action to stay there, so we were pretty much just sitting there waiting for a deportation order to come down,” said Hart, who was released from the prison complex at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 2013 after serving 15 months.

Hart left his Fort Campbell, Kentucky, base in 2005, a month before he was to be sent to Iraq and after serving nearly a year in Kuwait in 2003. He now lives in Florida and is pursuing a nursing degree, helped by the G.I. Bill. He is seeking to have his bad conduct discharge — a step up from dishonorable — upgraded to other than honorable.

“Up until the second part of the Iraq War, I was pretty much a model soldier,” said the sergeant, who had hoped his more than 10-year record would work in his favor upon his return, “but they didn’t see it that way.”

‘Censorship’: UK freezes bank account of Russian news agency, gives no reason

Barclay’s bank froze a Rossiya Segodnya news agency account without explaining its reasons. The news first came to light on Monday. The agency’s head Dmitry Kiselyov has called it “censorship.”

“To close the account of one of the world’s leading news agencies is censorship, the direct obstruction of journalists’ work,” Dmitry Kiselyov said. “What kind of press freedom and democracy can Britain claim to have if it prevents one of the world’s largest news agencies from working in the country?”

No formal notification of the move or justification for it was immediately provided. A source in the banking sector told the agency the Exchequer has put Dmitry Kiselyov on an anti-Russian sanctions list, which could have led to the news agency’s account being frozen.

Kiselyov is one of the people subjected to financial and travel sanctions in the EU. These restrictions have been imposed on a number of Russian officials in connection with Moscow’s stance over Ukraine crisis.

The sanctions list, which includes the head of Rossiya Segodnya news agency, was published on March 21. It characterizes Kiselyov as “central figure of the government propaganda supporting the deployment of Russian forces in Ukraine.”
