‘Every 30 Hours’ an Argentine Woman Dies

Despite the inclusion of “femicide” in the criminal code in 2012, only one man has been sentenced for femicide charges since then.

Director Alejandra Perdomo’s latest documentary is focusing on one of Argentina’s burning issue of gender violence, which kills one woman every 30 hours in the country.

ANALYSIS: Argentine Women in Forefront Against Femicide

Including testimonies of victims of gender violence, relatives of women killed, from all ages and social status, as well as experts, the documentary was the result of “the daily concern of opening a newspaper, listening to the radio or TV and find out about another femicide.”

The film tries to “show the hope beyond the pain,” said Perdomo to EFE, showing how parents of assassinated daughters joined the struggle against femicides, among others.

Every 30 hours, a woman is killed in the country, which inspired the documentary title, with almost 3,000 women killed in total since 2008, when the organization Casa del Encuentro started to monitor femicides.

Femicide refers to the murder of a woman by a man who considers her his property and therefore has the right to her life or death. It was recognized as a specific case of homicide in Argentina’s criminal code system and susceptible to heavier prison sentences since 2012 during the progressive administration of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

Despite the inclusion of “femicide” in the criminal code in 2012, only one man has been sentenced for femicide charges since then.

According to Pedromo, the anti-femicide movement “Ni Una Menos” made the issue more visible, resulting in a surge of complaints.

While Argentina has been a pioneer in implementing laws defending the rights of the LGBTI community over the past decade during the progressive Kirchnerist administration, the country only recently started to measure the extent of the femicide issue, after an accumulation of horrendous murders were covered in the media.

The documentary premiered on Nov. 24 and seeks to contribute to the visibility of gender violence, as well as the programs and groups fighting against it, working as “a tool for society” in a bid to cut short the cycle of violence.

Turkey’s authoritarian crackdown has only increased since the July coup attempt in the country.

Since the coup attempt in July of this year, Turkey’s crackdown on its citizens and President Tayyip Erdogan’s power-flexing continue on. In its latest clampdown, Turkey is set to investigate 10,000 people suspected of using social media to support terrorism, its interior ministry announced.

RELATED: Russia, Iran and Turkey Reach Key Agreement on Syria Conflict

The accusations range from insulting government officials online, to what the ministry calls “terror-related activity” on the internet.

Authorities have already held 3,710 people for questioning in the last month, of whom 1,656 have been arrested, and 84 are being questioned.

Since the coup prompted Erdogan to declare a state of emergency, his government began purging officials, soldiers, teachers, police and judge perceived as “anti-government”. More than 150 media outlets have been shut down and 140 journalists have been arrested since.

Critics say the state of emergency has allowed him to tighten his grip on power.

Just this month, Turkish authorities detained 235 people with alleged links to Kurdish rebels in the wake of the Dec. 10th deadly bombing outside an Istanbul soccer stadium that killed 44 people and wounded some 150.

That same week, Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party, also known by its Turkish acronym AK Party, submitted a bill to parliament that seeks to transition Turkey to a presidential system by abolishing the position of prime minister and extending the powers of the president.

Pakistan Responds to Israeli Fake News with Nuclear Threat

Pakistan’s defense minister issued a stern warning in response to the supposed “news.”

The danger of so-called fake news appears to have reached a new dangerous high, when Pakistan’s defense minister responded to an Israeli fake news article which claimed that Israel would “destroy” Pakistan with a nuclear attack.

RELATED: Bernie Sanders Wants Congress to Stop Trump’s Nuclear Plans

“Israeli def min (Defense Minister) threatens nuclear retaliation presuming pak (Pakistani) role in Syria against Daesh. Israel forgets Pakistan is a nuclear state too,” Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, tweeted on Friday.

His tweet caused widespread confusion, with many users asking if it was a fake tweet, while others traded belittling comments about the nuclear and foreign policy intentions of both sides.

On Dec. 20, an article on the AWDnews website claimed that the former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon threatened to “destroy” Pakistan with a nuclear attack after Pakistan planned to “send ground troops to Syria as part of an international coalition to fight against Islamic State.”

“As far as we are concerned, that is a threat, if, by misfortune, they arrive in Syria, we will know what to do, we will destroy them with a nuclear attack,” a fabricated quote attributed to Yaalon read.

On Saturday, the Israeli Ministry of Defense said that both the quote attributed to Yaalon, “was never said” and that the reports in the AWDNews article “are entirely false.”

The outlet is referred to as “a mostly right-wing conspiracy site with a preoccupation for world war,” according to the Media bias/fact check website which monitors fake news sources.

As information circulated that the Pakistan minister was retaliating to a fake news story, a number of Twitter users blasted Asif, saying that as a minister his comments were reckless and irresponsible. Asif has not yet made any follow-up tweets.

Amid real historical tensions between India and Pakistan, in September, Asif had threatened to also use nuclear weapons against India.

Both Pakistan and Israel possess a relatively small nuclear arsenal, although Israel has never officially confirmed it. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, SIPRI, estimated in 2016 that the U.S., Russia, China, France, the U.K., India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea possess over 15,000 nuclear weapons.

Pakistan does not currently have any forces in the Syrian conflict, but has given its support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government forces.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump created controversy for his recent comments on nuclear proliferation. “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes,” he tweeted on Thursday.

More Than 77% of Brazilians Disapprove of Coup Leader Temer

Brazilians are unhappy about the country’s economic woes, austerity measures and an ongoing corruption case where Temer is implicated.

More than three of every four Brazilians disapprove of Senate-imposed President Michel Temer, a new poll confirmed Friday.

RELATED:Temer’s Holiday Gift to Brazilian Workers: More Work, Less Pay

Temer, who was imposed after a parliamentary coup against elected President Dilma Rousseff, has a disapproval rating of 77 percent in December, the Ipsos Institute reported.

The latest numbers represent an 18 point drop in approval from October, while the approval rating for his government also dropped 10 points during the same period.

According to the director of Ipsos and head of the research, Danilo Cersosimo, the increase in disapproval for the beleaguered politician is a combination of dissatisfaction with government’s responses to the country’s economic woes as well as the reforms’ agenda proposed by Temer, including unpopular austerity measures.

Temer and his allies also continue to be embroiled in the Lava Jato anti-corruption operation, which recently resurfaced after a U.S. court found executives from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht guilty of bribing Brazilian officials to the tune of US$349 million.

Largest US Police Union Pressures Retailers to Drop Black Lives Matter Shirts

The FOP has stated they will continue pressure retailers to drop the shirts, “until Black Lives Matter makes statements that they do not approve of violence”.

The largest police union in the United States is attacking the Black Lives Matter, BLM, movement in a new way: pressuring retailers to stop selling shirts with BLM slogans .

After the Fraternal Order of Police, FOP, successfully pressured Wal-Mart to stop third-party sales of shirts that read “Bulletproof: Black Lives Matter,” it now has its sights set on Amazon.

FOP President Chuck Canterbury appealed to Wal-Mart Thursday, saying the shirts were “offensive.” The shirts were removed for sale the very same day.

“I am concerned that allowing these articles to be sold in this way will damage your company’s good name amongst FOP members and other active and retired law enforcement officers,” Canterbury wrote. “Commercializing our differences will not help our local police and communities to build greater trust and respect for one another.”

He said the issue was relevant because BLM has incited violence against police, although none of the killers of cops that were assassinated in high-profile cases such as those in Dallas and Baton Rouge this year, were affiliated with BLM.

Amazon has not yet responded to the FOP’s request.

Wal-Mart’s third-party retailer, Old Glory, has also pulled the shirts, but for issues of profitability.

“It wasn’t a big seller at all,” Old Glory owner Glenn Morelli told CNN. “The Blue Lives Matter sells more than the Black Lives Matter or bulletproof shirts combined. We don’t like to offend anybody.”

The FOP has stated they will continue pressure retailers to drop the shirts, “until Black Lives Matter makes statements that they do not approve of violence”.

Wal-mart will, however, continue to sell merchandise that says simply “Black Lives Matter.”

“Like other online retailers, we have a marketplace with millions of items offered by third parties that includes Blue Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter merchandise,” Walmart said in a statement. “After hearing concerns from customers, we are removing the specific item with the ‘bulletproof’ reference.”

A gift on Christmas Eve that we did not expect from the Obama Administration

“The UN Security Council has passed a landmark resolution condemning Israel over the expansion of settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories, after the US abstained, allowing the measure to go through despite harsh criticism from Donald Trump and the Israeli government.

The resolution passed with 14 votes, including France and the UK, in the 15-member council after the US departed from its longstanding policy of shielding Israel.

The Obama administration did not veto the measure because of the acceleration in settlement activity that has occurred since the US vetoed a similar resolution in 2011.

“The Security Council reaffirmed its established consensus that settlements have no legal validity,” said Samantha Power, US ambassador to the UN. “The US has been sending the message that the settlements must stop, privately and publicly, for nearly five decades.”

The vote infuriated Israel and its congressional allies in the US. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister who has a poor relationship with Barack Obama, said Israel “rejects this shameful anti-Israel resolution at the UN and will not abide by its terms”.

‘Evangelicals side with Israel That’s hurting Palestinian Christians.’

Image result for Christian Zionism CARTOON

Your editor hopes you will read every word of the Washington Post’s unusual coverage of the problems Christians face living In Israel, written by Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, who is an assistant editor at Foreign Policy magazine.  We quote part of the story here, but It deserves to be examined in full by every American Follower of Jesus. We have contributed a few notes of our own which I hope will clarify the understandable confusion over the much misused word, “evangelical.”

Several Traditional Christian denominations have historically used “Evangelical” attached to their names, including many traditional thinking Lutherans and Presbyterians, but most of these reject the ultra-modernizations of the bible started by Darby and Scofield in the 19th Century.  We hope every reader will finish this wonderfully perceptive story by Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, with this one comment of ours in mind, and we thank the author and the Washington Post.

Some of those who describe themselves as “evangelicals” are more correctly a part of a new, 150 year old sect that follows the teachings of contemporary bible writers like John Nelson Darby and Cyrus I. Scofield. We have dubbed them ‘Neo-Christians,” defining them as those who teach and preach that the present day State of Israel is the fulfillment of Biblical Prophesy.  A list of our own works is offered herein to explain “Neo-Christianity” or Christian Zionism, and how it differs from Traditional Protestant Christ-Following, and Roman Catholic teachings about Jesus and The Holy Land as well.– Editor CEC

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian begins: “This week, Christmas pageants across the country will reenact the scenes of the nativity; carolers will sing the beloved hymn, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”; and millions will turn their hearts toward that ancient city, where many believe that Jesus was born. But it’s likely most Americans haven’t pondered what that birthplace is like today — or who lives there.”

“The existence of Palestinian Christians, and the difficulties they face under Israeli occupation in their homeland, is a blind spot for American Christians. Evangelicals in particular are often strong supporters of Israel and suspicious of Muslims but don’t seem to realize that those aren’t the only groups at play in the region.”

” It makes sense that the Holy Land, perceived as being embodied by the State of Israel, is of particular concern to Christians. And to the degree that many evangelical Christians are conservative Republicans, their worldview matches up with an American foreign policy view that places a premium on Israeli security. But by forgetting their Palestinian coreligionists, American Christians aren’t just missing the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they are missing an opportunity to live out the message of peace that Jesus, born in Bethlehem, gave to the world…”

“Bethlehem is the most heavily Christian city in Palestine. Its Arab Christian mayor, Vera Baboun, describes her hometown the “capital of Christmas” and says that between Bethlehem proper and the surrounding Bethlehem governate, there are upward of 38,000 Christian residents. Christmas celebrations there form an integral part of city life. “Bethlehem is the city that gave the message of peace to the whole world,” Baboun told me in a November interview at a conference hosted by the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. “But today, Bethlehem does not live the peace that it gave to the whole world.”  Read the rest of this timely and truthful story here..

Editor wraps up: For We Hold These Truths’ contribution to understanding of “Evangelicalism” and Christian Zionism, we suggest Christian Zionism, The Tragedy and The Turning, a twenty-nine minute film, and or, our many articles on the subject indexed here:

More than 80 percent of priest murders reportedly go unsolved.

While Mexico is one of the most devout Catholic countries in the world, for eight consecutive years it has been the world’s most dangerous country for priests, who are being killed and attacked at record rates, according to a report from the Catholic Media Centre.

In 2016, three Mexican priests were killed and four other Catholic teachers were also killed, according to the report from the Catholic Media Centre, which said that 2016 has been the deadliest year for priests since they started keeping records.

Between 1990 and 2016, the rate of murdered priests increased by a staggering 375 percent, where 38 priests have either been killed or gone missing. According to reports, more than 80 percent of priest murders have gone unsolved.

The report comes amid increased attacks against religious figures including violent threats and extortion, where Mexico has been labeled the most dangerous country in the world for religious officials for eight years running.

Between 1990 and 2016, 61 attacks were reported against Catholic Church members in the country. In 2016, extortions, at least those that were reported, rose by 70 percent.

The Catholic Media Centre said that while the majority of violence against the church was due to a spilling over of violence from organized crime groups, Mexican security forces were also involved in some incidents.

Since former President Felipe Calderon launched a militarized war on drug cartels a decade ago, rates of violence and murder have shot up in Mexico and so too, attacks on members of the church.

The report warned that amid widespread violence in Mexico under Enrique Peña Nieto’s current presidency, who has continued Calderon’s drug war, violence against Catholic leaders will increase by 100 percent.

The group heavily criticized the government’s poor response to the increased attacks, where there were 25 recorded attacks against church leaders in since Nieto took power in 2012.

In September, Mexico was shocked after three priests were kidnapped and killed within a week of each other, including Jose Alfredo Lopez Guillen who was kidnapped from his small parish in the state of Michoacan. His body was later found with five bullet wounds.

The Day Fidel Castro Declared Cuba Free of Illiteracy

“Only a country in revolution would have been capable of deploying the effort and energy necessary to carry out such a gigantic mission,” Fidel said.

Fifty-five years ago today, the Cuban leader Fidel Castro declared the socialist island a territory free of illiteracy, fulfilling the dream of the Cuban Revolution that began with a massive free literacy program for all Cubans.

Fidel’s words on that famous Dec. 22, 1961, in Revolutionary Plaza in Havana, was a result of the hard work of more than 250,000 young Cubans who took part in the volunteer literacy brigades that traveled the entire breadth of the island bringing literacy to the most remote corners of the country.

“No moment is more solemn and exciting, no instant full of legitimate pride and glory than this, in which four and a half centuries of ignorance have been defeated,” said Fidel.

“When we said we would eradicate illiteracy in only one year, it seemed a reckless statement, it seemed impossible,” he continued. “Only a country in revolution would have been capable of deploying the effort and energy necessary to carry out such a gigantic mission.”

Every year on Dec. 22, Cuba celebrates Teachers’ Day, to remember the hard work of its citizens’ unprecedented achievement to become the first Latin American country free of illiteracy.

During an event to celebrate the anniversary in Havana, a group of teachers who volunteered during the campaign honored Fidel Castro and his work to improve education in the island.

“It was a task for everyone. Fidel called and the youth responded,” said Zoila Benitez, one of the teachers who participated in the literacy campaign.

Olga Lidia Tapia, a member of the Cuban Communist Party, said the revolutionary education process in Cuba has changed the island forever and inspired others around the world.

“This process transformed realities and made reading and writing a legacy for all,” said Tapia.

5,000 Migrants Died in the Mediterranean in 2016

Just under 3,800 migrants perished at sea during 2015, according to UNHCR and IOM figures.

A record 5,000 migrants are believed to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea this year, following two shipwrecks on Thursday in which some 100 people, mainly West Africans, were feared dead, aid agencies said Friday.

RELATED: Europe’s Refugee Crisis

Two overcrowded inflatable dinghies capsized in the Strait of Sicily after leaving Libya for Italy, the International Organization for Migration or IOM, and the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said.

“Those two incidents together appear to be the numbers that would bring this year’s total up to over to 5,000 (deaths), which is a new high that we have reported during this crisis,” IOM spokesman Joel Millman told a Geneva briefing.

The Italian coast guard rescued survivors and had recovered eight bodies so far, he said. IOM staff were interviewing survivors brought to Trapani, Italy, he added.

Just under 3,800 migrants perished at sea during all of 2015, according to IOM figures.

UNHCR spokesman William Spindler said the “alarming increase” in deaths this year appeared to be related to bad weather, the declining quality of vessels used by smugglers, and their tactics to avoid detection.

RELATED: Europe Can No Longer Pretend to Respect Human Rights

“These (reasons also) include sending large numbers of embarkations simultaneously, which makes the work of rescuers more difficult,” he said

The UNHCR appealed to states to open up more legal pathways to admit refugees. Resettlement programs, private sponsorship, family reunification and student scholarships would help “so they do not have to resort to dangerous journeys and the use of smugglers,” Spindler said.

IOM figures show 358,403 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 up to and including Dec. 21, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy.
