Does the Nazi regime Have “A Patagonia Project” in Argentina?

Does Israel Have “A Patagonia Project” in Argentina?

The Argentinian authorities are wondering about the massive purchase of land in Patagonia by a British billionaire, and the “holidays” that tens of thousands of Israëli soldiers are enjoying on his property.

In the 19th century, the British government were undecided as to where they should settle Israel – either in what is now Uganda, in Argentina or in Palestine. In fact, Argentina was at that time controlled by the United Kingdom and, on the initiative of French baron Maurice de Hirsch, had become a land of refuge for Jews who were fleeing the pogroms in central Europe.

In the 20th century, after the 1955 military coup d’Etat against democratically elected President General Juan Perón [and subsequently in the 1970s], a current of antisemitism developed within the armed forces. A brochure was distributed accusing the new State of Israel of preparing an invasion of Patagonia, the “Andinia Plan”.

It has become apparent today that even though the Argentinian extreme right had exaggerated the facts in the 1970’s, there was indeed a project for implantation (and not invasion) in Patagonia.

Everything changed with the Falklands War in 1982. At that time, the Argentinian military junta attempted to recuperate the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which from their point of view had been occupied by the British for a century and a half. The UNO recognised the legitimacy of the Argentinian claim, but the Security Council condemned the use of force to recover these territories. The stakes are considerable, since the territorial waters of these archipelagos offer access to all the riches of the Antarctic continent.

At the end of this war, which cost more than a thousand lives (official British figures are largely understated), London imposed a particularly severe Peace Treaty on Buenos Aires – Argentinian armed forces are limited to their most simple expression. Above all, the control of their Southern and Antarctic air space is confiscated for the profit of the Royal Air Force, and they are obliged to inform the United Kingdom about all their operations.

In 1992 and 1994, two particularly devastating, murderous and mysterious attacks successively destroyed the Israeli embassy and the headquarters of the Israeli association AMIA. The first attack took place when the station chiefs of Israeli Intelligence had just left the building. The second occurred in the context of joint Egypt-Argentinian research for the development of Condor ballistic missiles. In the same period, the main Condor factory exploded, and the sons of presidents Carlos Menem andHafez el-Assad died accidentally. The various enquiries gave rise to a succession of manipulations.

After having blamed Syria, prosecutor Alberto Nisman turned on Iran, whom he accused of having ordered the two attacks, and Hezbollah, who he claimed had carried them out. The ex- Peronist President Cristina Kirchner was accused of having negotiated the end of the legal proceedings against Iran in exchange for advantageous oil prices. Prosecutor Nisman was found dead at his home, and President Kirchner was found guilty of high treason. However, last week, a coup de theâtre destroyed everything we though we knew – the United States FBI handed over DNA analyses which attest to the absence of the presumed terrorist among the victims, and the presence of a body which has never been identified. 25 years later, we know nothing more about these attacks.

In the 21st century, benefitting from the advantages offered them by the Falklands War Treaty, the United Kingdom and Israel are now setting up a new project Patagonia.

British billionaire Joe Lewis has acquired immense territories in the South of Argentina and even neighbouring Chile. His properties cover areas several times larger than the State of Israël. They are situated in Tierra del Fuego, at the extreme Southern point of the continent. In particular, they surround the Lago Escondido, which effectively denies access to the entire region, despite a legal injunction.

The billionaire has built a private airport with a two kilometre landing strip, in order to be able to receive civil and military aircraft.

Since the Falklands War, the Israëli army has been organising “holiday camps” (sic) in Patagonia for its soldiers. Between 8,000 and 10,000 of them now come every year to spend two weeks on Joe Lewis’ land.

While in the 1970’s, the Argentinian army noted the construction of 25,000 empty houses, which gave rise to the myth of the Andinia Plan, hundreds of thousands have been built today.

It is impossible to verify the state of the construction work, since these are private lands, and Google Earth has neutralised the satellite photographs of the area, just as it does with NATO’s military installations.

Neighbouring Chile has handed over a submarine base to Israël. Tunnels have been dug in order to survive the polar winter.

The Mapuche Indians who inhabit both Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia were surprised to learn that the Resistencia Ancestral Mapuche (RAM) had been reactivated in London. This is a mysterious organisation which fights for independence. First accused of being an old association recuperated by the Argentinian secret services, the RAM is today considered by the left as a legitimate secessionist movement, but by the Mapuche leaders as an initiative financed by George Soros.

On 15 November 2017, the Navy lost all contact with the submarine ARA San Juan, which was finally declared lost at sea. It was one of the TR 1700 class diesel-electric submarines which were the flagships of the reduced Argentinian army. The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) has announced that it has recorded an unusual acoustic phenomenon in the Atlantic, close to the area from which the San Juan sent its last signal. The government finally admitted that the submarine was on a non-specified “secret mission”, of which London had been informed. The USA began a search, while the Russian Navy deployed a drone capable of exploring the ocean to a depth of 6,000 metres, but found nothing. The San Juan probably exploded. The Argentinian Press is convinced that the submarine had either collided with a mine, or was destroyed by an enemy torpedo.

It is impossible for the moment to determine if Israel is engaged in a programme for the exploitation of Antarctica, or if it is building a rear base in case of defeat in Palestine.

Records of British Mandate of Palestine: Shimon Peres’ Request to Become Mandatory Palestine Citizen Revealed

MyHeritage revealed on December 28 2017 a database that includes the citizenship requests filed by 67,000 people during the British mandate period in the land of Israel. Among those who filed a request was former Israeli President Shimon Peres.

A database that includes 67,000 citizenship requests from the British mandate period between the years 1937 and 1947 was revealed on Thursday. Among those who requested citizenship were people who went on to become key figures in the young State of Israel- including former Israeli President Shimon Peres, who was born Szymon Perski.

Peres’ request includes documents in which he declared that he is interested in agricultural work and wants to change his name to Shimon. Another request was submitted by author Dahn Ben-Amotz,who asked to speed up his immigration process.

The database was compiled by MyHeritage, an Israeli startup that specializes in developing genealogy building tools, with the assistance of the Israel State Archives. The requests, each of which is about 15 pages long, include the names, birthdates and addresses of 206,000 people.

Each request includes two recommendation letters from citizens who declared their support for the petitioner. Among those who submitted recommendations for future citizens were former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, former Minister Shlomo Hillel and author Yehuda Burla.

Many of the requests were filed by Jews who managed to escape Europe shortly before the Holocaust and survivors who wanted to move to Israel after the collapse of the Nazi regime. Other requests were filed by Jewish people from Arab countries who wanted to come to the holy land to fulfill the Zionist dream.

Trump Sham “Peace Plan”: Abu Dis Village (Bordering Jerusalem), A Future Palestinian Capital?

NOVANEWS

Reportedly, the idea is part of a Trump administration sham peace plan.

Palestinians won’t ever accept abandoning East Jerusalem as their legitimate capital, a small village substituting as a capital of a bantustan state, amounting to one in name only.

The proposal isn’t a peace plan. It’s a prescription for endless conflict and denial of fundamental rights for a long-beleaguered people.

Former Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh said he was told about the Trump administration’s sham proposal. More on this below.

Abu Dis is a Palestinian village bordering Jerusalem – in Area B under joint Israeli/Palestinian control.

Israel, of course, controls the Occupied Territories with an iron fist, the Palestinian Authority (PA) created as an enforcer for its ruthless rule.

Israel’s Apartheid Wall when completed will border Abu Dis from the north, west and east, the eastern portion to separate the village’s urban and rural areas, removing thousands of dunams of arable land from its jurisdiction.

The western portion of the wall divides Abu Dis from Jerusalem, access to the Holy City prohibited without Israeli hard to get permit permission for Palestinian men under age-55 and women under age-50.

Abu Dis and other area villages lack access to medical care, schools and enough employment for its people.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Israel’s Apartheid Wall severely disrupts access for Palestinians to vital services and employment throughout the West Bank.

It has nothing to do with Israeli security, everything to do with persecuting Palestinians and land theft – about 10 -12% of West Bank land when completed.

Haniyeh said the Trump administration proposed connecting Abu Dis by bridge to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and compound.

The plan reportedly involves dividing the West Bank into three sections, along with establishing Gaza as an autonomous area, maintaining illegal blockade.

“The recent US decision on Jerusalem is part of ongoing efforts to terminate the Palestinian cause within the context of a so-called ‘deal of the century,’ “ Haniyeh explained, adding:

The unacceptable scheme “has implications for the reconfiguration of the entire region…which will come at the expense of Jerusalem and Palestinian rights.”

Under Oslo, East Jerusalem was to be the capital of a future Palestinian state. Suggesting Abu Dis instead shows outrageous contempt for the rights of an entire population.

During Abbas’ Riyadh visit earlier this month, crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) presented the idea of Palestinian statehood without sovereignty.

It would be without East Jerusalem as its capital, a pseudo-state surrounded by expanding settlements encroaching on Palestinian land, stealing it, with barriers they’re forbidden to approach, ghettoizing them.

Jerusalem would become Israel’s exclusive capital, East Jerusalem increasingly off-limits to them. Diaspora Palestinians would have no right of return.

Israel would be free to exploit Palestinian resources they way things are today.

Trump, Netanyahu and MBS apparently conspired against long-suffering Palestinians – the proposed scheme no responsible leadership would accept.

PLO and Hamas officials consider the scheme insulting and unacceptable.

Senior Hamas official Hassan Yousef said

“(i)f the Palestinian leadership were to accept” MBS’ proposal, “the Palestinian people would not let them remain.”

Abbas was reportedly told to accept the plan or resign. Weeks earlier, the NYT said

“the main points of the Saudi proposal as told to Mr. Abbas were confirmed by many people briefed on the discussions between” him and MBS.

The notion of a Palestinian pseudo-state without East Jerusalem as its capital, no right of return, no control over its resources, no halt in settlement construction, continued theft of its land and dispossession of its people, along with their rights under international law denied amounts to continued occupation and subjugation.

Trump’s Jerusalem declaration plunged a dagger into the heart of the moribund peace process, added proof that Washington can never be an honest broker for anything.

Trump is heralding the ethnic cleansing of Palestine

NOVANEWS

“A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them. There was no choice but to expel that population. It was necessary to cleanse the hinterland and cleanse the border areas and cleanse the main roads. It was necessary to cleanse the villages from which our convoys and our settlements were fired on.”

…by Jonas E. Alexis, the Balkan Post, and Mark Dankof

Mark Dankof is the former 36th District Chairman of the Republican Party in King County/Seattle. He was an elected delegate to Texas State Republican Conventions in 1994 and 1996 and entered the United States Senate race in Delaware in 2000 as the nominated candidate of the Constitution Party against Democratic candidate Thomas Carper and Republican incumbent William Roth.

BP: U.S. President Donald Trump has recognized al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel. The move has angered Muslims across the world. What should we expect from this?

JEA: Trump said that this move will bring “a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.”[1] Nothing could be further from the truth.

Trump was essentially perpetuating the Israeli narrative, and both the European Union and Vladimir Putin have rejected that narrative precisely because recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital while ignoring the Israeli settlements and concentration camps in Gaza can never bring “a lasting peace” in the Middle East. In fact, it can only bring violent conflicts because Israel continues to ignore international law and more specifically the moral order.

BP: What would be the consequences of such action, especially in the region?

JEA: We should expect violent reactions in some circles, and this is already happening as we speak. People of reason should continue to resist the Israeli machination of the Middle East, but not through violence. The central issue again and again is that we have seen these violent reactions in history before.

History repeats itself, largely because people fail to learn from the past. Remember the Hep-Hep riot in 1819 in Germany? Once the mob and the middle class realized that they were economically being reduced to rubble and abject poverty through cheating and other sophisticated means, and once they stumbled upon the real perpetrators, who were largely Jewish, chaos loomed. E. Michael Jones writes,

“Police officers were beaten and thrown to the ground and a military unit which the police called for help was met with a hail of rocks. Ten of the rioters were arrested, and six of them held in jail. The mob then attacked the house of Theresie Huegelin, where the Jew Abraham Loeb Brueckner ran a junk shop.

“After breaking down the door of Brueckner’s shop, the mob smashed the store windows, as well as the windows on the second floor of the building. During the rioting, one of the protesters insulted the royal city commissioner by shouting ‘Hep-Hep’ in his face, and then laughing shouted tauntingly ‘arrest me’…

“The tumult grew so large on August 4 that the president of the council was forced to call in reinforcements. Signs of Jewish businesses were ripped down and trampled on. Finally, the rioters invaded the house of Moises Forchheimer. Forchheimer was not at home at the time, but his wife, who was, was forced to pay the rioters 60 pennies to get rid of them…

“Of the 16 men arrested for rioting in Frankfurt, 15 had either already declared bankruptcy or they were unemployed former soldiers, day laborers or street urchins, a group of people, in other words, who in the best of times were at the periphery of the economy and were being pushed into penury by the influx the lower class Jews who undercut their tenuous connection to the local economy.”[2]

One of the main causes of the Hep-Hep riot again was that the Jewish oligarchs began to cheat the system and sucked the blood out of the middle class. This was never an isolated case. Centuries earlier, we find the same phenomenon in Poland, most particularly during the 1600s.

Jewish historiographer Heinrich Graetz declared that once the Jews began to immerse themselves in the study of the Talmud, wickedness became the rule and not the exception. They immediately began to cheat the system.

Well, the Talmud has always been a problem because it is against the moral and political order. In fact, it is against Logos and all its metaphysical manifestation. In fact, the Talmud declares that Christ is burning in excrement in hell.[3]

The interesting thing is that Netanyahu has said that the Talmud is Israel’s legal system.[4]If that is the case, then we have a serious problem here because the Talmud views people like Netanyahu as “special” or “gifted” and non-Jews as beasts that need to be used and reused.

In that sense, Trump was essentially perpetuating a Talmudic view when he gave Netanyahu a license to expand on the settlements. Netanyahu was happy about Trump’s announcement because he obviously knows how he is going to make his next move.

Since Jerusalem is Israel’s capital, he would reason, then those who do not belong to the capital, i.e. Gazans and other non-Jews around the area, will either have to be removed by force from their lands or exterminated. That’s what the settlements are about. As the noted British journalist Robert Fisk has pointed out, what Trump was essentially saying is simply this:

“Goodbye Palestine. Goodbye the two-state solution. Goodbye the Palestinians. For this new Israeli ‘capital’ is not for them. Trump did not even use the word ‘Palestine.’ He talked about ‘Israel and the Palestinians’ – in other words, of a state and of those who do not deserve – and can no longer aspire to – a state.”[5]

BP: Putting aside their difference, the regional nation have, in unison, condemned the move. Is the move likely to backfire on Israel and the United States?

JEA: Of course. Keep in mind that anything that is not based on reason will eventually backfire. That’s Hegel’s position. I think he is correct. This move will continue to expose Israel as an apartheid state.

Trump may think that his announcement will help him in the next presidential election, but many of his supporters are already dumping him by the truckload because he has made an incestuous and unconditional relationship with Israel. His last hope for the next election is the Israel Lobby and Christian Zionists in America.

BP: President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman followed Trump’s lead and also said he was “truly happy” about the decision. What could you say about this?

JEA: That doesn’t surprise me at all. Zeman has been a Zionist puppet from time immemorial. He said, “I am a Jew.” He also said:

The only holiday of independence which I can never leave out is the celebration of the independence of the Jewish State of Israel.

“It is necessary to name the enemy of human civilization and this enemy is international terrorism associated with religious fundamentalism and religious intolerance. This fanatical creed does not only attack a single nation, as we saw after September 11. Muslim fanatics in Nigeria recently captured 200 young Christian girls. And in the flower at the heart of Europe, an abominable killing took place at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.”

What serious politician will believe this nonsense? Does this man mean to tell us that Muslim migration to Europe has nothing to do with perpetual wars in the Middle East? Does he mean to tell us that the alleged incident which took place at the Jewish Museum in Brussels is worse than destroying entire countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and even Syria?

What is so disgusting is that Zeman magically lifted a passage from the Quran which presumably incites violence against Jews and then said:

I criticized those who call for the killing of the Arabs, but I don’t know of about any mass movement that calls for the mass murder of Arabs. I do however know of an anti-civilizational movement which calls for the mass murder of the Jews.”

Is Zeman that stupid? If he is not aware of any historical development which is readily available to a politician like himself, then let us summon Israeli historian Benny Morris. Morris declared unequivocally:

“A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them. There was no choice but to expel that population. It was necessary to cleanse the hinterland and cleanse the border areas and cleanse the main roads. It was necessary to cleanse the villages from which our convoys and our settlements were fired on.”[6]

Morris, a flaming Zionist, has produced a scholarly text which was published by Cambridge University Press and which methodically details how this ethnic cleansing took place. Other Israeli historians like Ilan Pappe has said pretty much the same thing.[7] If Zeman wants to remain a puppet and an Israeli shill, fine. But he simply cannot ignore historical scholarship. He said:

“I am a friend of Israel… deep friend of Israel, and that is why I think that peace in the Middle East [will] be based primarily on the safety of Israel.”[8]

What about the safety and security of Palestinian men, women and children? Are they human beings? Well, according to numerous rabbis and even Israeli politicians, they are not. We know for a fact that Israeli politician and Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked has unequivocally and ontologically declared that the Palestinians are Israel’s enemies.

“Who is the enemy?,” she asked. “The Palestinian people. Why? Ask them, they started…” Shaked’s political ideology with respect to the Palestinians is worth quoting in full:

“The Palestinian people has declared war on us, and we must respond with war. Not an operation, not a slow-moving one, not low-intensity, not controlled escalation, no destruction of terror infrastructure, no targeted killings. Enough with the oblique references. This is a war. Words have meanings. This is a war.

“It is not a war against terror, and not a war against extremists, and not even a war against the Palestinian Authority. These too are forms of avoiding reality. This is a war between two people. Who is the enemy? The Palestinian people. Why? Ask them, they started…

“Behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. Actors in the war are those who incite in mosques, who write the murderous curricula for schools, who give shelter, who provide vehicles, and all those who honor and give them their moral support.

“They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.”[9]

If you think that Shaked is just an isolated case, then you are mistaken. Rabbi Yitzhak Ginsburg unequivocally declared:

“Any trial based on the assumption that Jews and goyim are equal is a total travesty of justice.”[10]

“In our neighborhood,” said Benjamin Netanyahu, we need to protect ourselves from wild beasts.” If an Israeli soldier is convicted of manslaughter, says Netanyahu, he should be released immediately. Long before Netanyahu came on the political scene, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir compared the Palestinians to “grasshoppers.”[11]

Former IDF Chief of Staff Raphael Eitan declared way back in the 1980s:

We declare openly that the Arabs have no right to settle on even one centimeter of Eretz Israel….Force is all they do or ever will understand. We shall use the ultimate force until the Palestinians come crawling to us on all fours.”

Rabbi Yaacov Perrin: “One million Arabs are not worth a Jewish fingernail.”[12]

MK Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan himself declared that Palestinians “are beasts, they are not human.” MK Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan added: “A Jew always has a much higher soul than a gentile, even if he is a homosexual.”

One has to be completely stupid or blind to ignore all this evidence. But if Zeman insists that this is all news to him, then he needs to pay close attention to Gilad Sharon, son of former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon. In a Jerusalem Post article entitled “A decisive conclusion is necessary,” Sharon declared back in 2012:

“We need to flatten entire neighborhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn’t stop with Hiroshima – the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too. There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire. Were this to happen, the images from Gaza might be unpleasant – but victory would be swift, and the lives of our soldiers and civilians spared.”[13]

How can Zeman get out of that diabolical project?

BP: Palestinian officials told Reuters that Saudi Arabia has been working for weeks behind the scenes to press them to support a nascent U.S. peace plan. What’s your analysis?

JEA: I would say that Saudi Arabia has been working for years behind the scenes to support the Israeli narrative. Keep in mind that peace for Israel can only come when they can do just whatever they want and however they want to do it.

Again, if Saudi Arabia and Israel are working to establish peace in the region, why is Saudi Arabia liquidating Yemeni men, women and children? Is that part of peace as well? I have just written an entire article on this very issue.

Moreover, why is there a concentration camp known as Gaza? Can anyone with an ounce of common sense really believe that both Israel and Saudi Arabia are seeking peace in the region? Does Trump really believe this? Didn’t he say ad infinitum during the presidential campaign that the Saudis were behind the 9/11 attack? If he no longer believes this, then was he lying? And if he was lying, shouldn’t he be fired for lying to the American people and much of the world?

If Trump cannot be trusted on these issues, has he given us enough evidence to trust him to flesh out a peaceful solution in the Middle East? What has he done so far? If Christ is right, that one should judge a tree by the fruits that it produces, what have been the fruits of giving Israel and Saudi Arabia unlimited political access to the Middle East?

You be the judge. Mark Dankof, your turn.

MD: Trump’s proclamation on Jerusalem is a moral and political disaster. It totally negates his claims to be supporting an ‘America First’ foreign policy, and demonstrates how his Administration has been totally hijacked by Zionist Neo Conservative advisors and operatives.

Most tragically, it guarantees ongoing war and bloodshed in Palestine specifically and the Middle East generally, and the continued use of the American military as a Janissary force for Israel. Finally, the theft of East Jerusalem and the Occupied Territories is not simply a continuation of Israeli thievery since the late 1940s, but a virtual guarantee that an American-Israeli preemptive attack on Iran will be next. Dr. Philip Giraldi, a former CIA officer, has expressed public concern that it will happen in the next year.

‘Not enough even for coffee’: UK troops in Afghanistan get £1 each to celebrate Christmas

 NOVANEWS
Christmas in Vietnam was different, girls brought in, all of us got to meet Bob Hope personally, hot turkey dinners, christmas carols.
The military wouldn’t have sent every combat unit into the bush before the holiday so that the REMF contingent of service academy types could celebrate in total safety.
The truth is a thousand times worse than this.g

As PM May praised the military for keeping the UK safe in her Christmas message, troops abroad were not exactly in a festive mood. It has emerged that 500 soldiers in Afghanistan received just £1 each to celebrate the holiday.

Five hundred British troops deployed to Afghanistan were allocated a total of just £500 ($700) for Christmas, the Sunday Times revealed.  Some said the defense chiefs’ frugality left the troops lagging far behind their foreign counterparts as soldiers from the  American contingent reportedly received eight Christmas trees, decorations, turkeys, numerous gifts, and even a copy of the new Star Wars film.

“The contrast between the American and British approach is staggering,” said a British officer stationed in Kabul. “As an army we don’t have as much money as the US, but even the Danish and Mongolians seem to be doing more,” he noted.

The tight Christmas budget has affected morale, one soldier told the newspaper: “They haven’t even sent us enough for a coffee. The Americans send in more money to feed the stray cats on their compound.”

Christmas festivities for troops from the Yorkshire Regiment have been limited to sneaking out and swapping the stars on the American trees for Yorkshire flags, the paper said. The ministry of defense said arrangements for Christmas festivities “are made locally,” it added.

While cash-strapped, the troops did not feel completely forgotten. “It has been staggering to see the number of parcels that have arrived for us from friends and family,” said the officer. In addition, Christmas lunch was still served on Friday, complimented by snow, which fell last week in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The report on Christmas allowances came shortly after UK Prime Minister Theresa May stressed the “enormous debt we owe to our armed forces and veterans” in her Christmas message to the military.

“Whenever you are called upon – regulars or reserves – you always give of your best and inspire us all with your service,” May said, adding, “the valiant hearts of our servicemen and women, many far away from their own loved ones at this special time of year, are working to keep us safe.”

Trump’s National Security Strategy: A Strategy of Thuggery and Intimidation

NOVANEWS

“America first” and “peace through strength” are means for Trump’s administration to control and suppress American people through police state under the guise of national security, and to control foreign countries through nuclear military intimidation and bullying. It is US that is threatening world peace not Iran or North Korea.

By Dr. Elias Akleh

During his national security speech last Monday, December 18th Trump introduced his administration’s new “America First” national security strategy in a surprisingly unaccustomed calm and calculated mannerism that is uncharacteristic of him. Although it seemed that he was well coached, yet, he couldn’t escape his narcissistic tendency and kept denunciating previous administrations while praising his own.

Trump accused the previous administrations of failing the American people by building the economy of foreign countries rather than the American economy. He accused the Trans Pacific Partnership as a “job killing deal” and the Paris Climate Accord of being expensive and unfair. Trump promised to withdraw America from both.

He accused Obama’s administration of creating ISIS and setting it upon Libya and Syria; an accusation that he emphatically asserted during his presidential campaign when he accused Obama and Hillary of creating ISIS.

On the other hand, he praised his efforts, during his first trip abroad to the Middle East, to convince the Gulf States (the real supporters of ISIS) and other Muslim majority states to join together to fight radical Islamic ideology and terrorism.

He took the credit that “we have dealt ISIS devastating defeats one after another” falsely claiming that the American coalition had recaptured almost 100% of the land that was held by the terrorists in Iraq and in Syria. Facts reveal that ISIS was defeated not by the American coalition rather by Syrian/Hezbollah/Russian coalition.

He blamed Obama’s administration for signing nuclear agreement with Iran calling it a bad deal. Then accuses Iran of terrorism throughout the Middle East when Iran has been fighting the American created and armed ISIS terrorist groups for the last seven years. He boasted that he imposed an ineffective and meaningless sanctions against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp, and of declining to certify Iran deal to Congress. Trump ignores the fact that his administration is arming and supporting Saudi Arabia’s aggression against Yemen creating the worst humanitarian crisis in the recent history.

Trump accused previous administrations of tolerating North Korean regime allowing it to develop its missile system. He accused North Korea of threatening the US and the world, coerced its neighboring countries to join him in imposing economic sanctions, and sent carrier ships to threaten North Korea of nuclear attack and utter destruction. He in fact used North Korea’s deterrent missile system to spread fear in the hearts of the neighboring countries in order to sell them more American weapons.

After tooting his first year achievements, Trump focused on his national security strategy stating that it advances four national interests; at times called them pillars. The first is the protection of the American people, the homeland and the American way of life. He talked about the need to secure American borders in order to secure the American nation.

So, he again called for the construction of a wall on the southern border, many parts of which had been built by previous administrations. This is an Israeli concept to separate “them” from “us”. He explained that this strategy is to enhance ICE (Immigration and Custom Enhancement) officers and homeland security personnel to stop Latinos, whom he previously called criminals, drug dealers, rapists and thieves.

This step also calls for confronting, discrediting and defeating what he called radical Islamic terrorism and ideology and preventing it from spreading into the US. Trump is spreading Islamophobia and is banning Muslims from five countries in this regard. A new vetting procedure has been implemented to keep Muslims out, and the vetting is getting tougher every month.

The strategy also calls for developing new ways to counter the use of cyber and social media to attack and threaten Americans. This is meant to destroy net neutrality, to enhance surveillance, to target internet users with brainwashing fake news, and to perpetrate more cyber attacks as was done against Iranian nuclear centrifuges (Stuxnet virus).

This interest (pillar) aims at building a police state, divide the people, spread Islamophobia and hatred, increase surveillance, and killing net neutrality. By protecting the people and the American way of life Trump means protecting the richest 1% and their exploiting ways of life and separating them from the poor working class.

Trump’s second strategic pillar is the promotion of American economic prosperity that he recognizes as national security. Trump sees home economic growth as an absolute necessity for American power and influence abroad. “Any nation that trades away prosperity for security ends up losing both” Trump explained.

So, his strategy calls for cutting taxes, rolling back unnecessary regulations against corporations, renegotiate/cancel trade agreements, and use firm actions against “unfair practice and intellectual property theft.” The strategy proposes a complete rebuilding of American infrastructure, and embraces a future American energy dominance and self-sufficiency.

The strategy, here, serves only the rich and the corporations, including, of course, Trump’s corporations, by cutting their taxes and rolling back regulations that were previously enforced to serve and to protect the consumers and the environment.

Trump has already signed a tax bill reducing the corporate tax from 35% to 21% while the working class gets only crumbs. With the complete rebuilding of the infrastructure and huge military expenditure Trump is proposing there will be a definite huge budget deficit, that would require cuts in the infrastructure building (Puerto Rico Island in mind), reduction in social security benefits, and reduction in medicare and social services.

When talking about trade fairness and reciprocity Trump is alluding to renegotiating more aggressive trade agreements and imposing economic boycott or aggressive measures against those countries, who don’t play according to his rules. Deregulations would allow the opening of federal land for mining and oil excavations. The future American energy dominance and self-sufficiency are hints to allowing more oil fracking and running more oil pipe lines.

The third pillar of Trump’s strategy recognizes that “weakness is the surest path to conflict and our rivaled power is the surest mean of defense”, and “a nation that is not prepared to win a war is a nation not capable of preventing a war.” Trump calls for “peace through strength”. He calls for the reversal of what he accuses previous administrations’ decisions to shrink the armed forces even as threats to national security grew. His strategy calls for massive building up of the military by breaking from what he called the damaging defense sequester, and calls for streamlining acquisition to eliminate bloated bureaucracy.

Trump proposed the investment of $700 billion in defense next year praising, here, the “fundamental side benefit of creating millions and millions of jobs”, yet neglecting the side-harm of war, killings and destruction. Trump’s strategy recognizes space as a “competitive domain” and calls for multi-layered missile defense; a very dangerous call that will initiate space arms race and eventual star wars.

Trump’s strategy recognizes “a new era of competition … in vigorous military and economic and political contest” and his administration is in this competition to win the contest. His peace through strength is actually the process of bullying, intimidating, coercing, and subjugating other nations to the whims of the American president (dictator) under the threats of military destruction and annihilation.

Let us not ignore Nikki Haley’s threat to North Korea in the United Nation: “if war comes, make no mistake, the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed.” I don’t know what peace Trump was talking about when the US had destroyed in whole or part many countries around the world and had overthrown democratic governments and supported dictatorial regimes.

Previous administrations never had a defense sequester. On the contrary, the military budget grew immensely a year after year until it exceeded the military budgets of the next eight countries combined. Trump wants to eliminate any control or restrictions over military budget by streamlining military acquisitions.

Under the justification of building a credible military deterrence Trump called for significant investment to maintain American nuclear arsenal and infrastructure capable of being deployed abroad. He is not satisfied with the almost 200 nuclear bombs stationed in different European countries. He does not see these as threat to world peace while considering North Korean missile and the non-existent Iranian nuclear weapons as the real threat to world peace. What a myopic vision!

Trump’s fourth strategic pillar is advancing American influence in the world by building partnerships based on cooperation and reciprocity with those who share American goals. Trump claimed that the US does not seek to impose the American ways of life on any one, but will champion these values without apology. Although his strategy will pursue a vision of strong, sovereign and independent nations that respect their citizens and respect their neighbors, it will not allow inflexible ideology to become an obsolete and obstacle to peace.

Trump seems to have forgotten that the US had destroyed many independent sovereign countries in order to spread its version of democracy. Last week his ambassador to the UN; Nikki Haley, had threatened member countries , virtually the whole world, not to vote for Jerusalem proposal, warning them that their vote will be remembered, their names will be taken and handed to Trump, who will consider this as a personal matter, and will cut US financial aid to these members. If this is not imposing one’s opinion, then what is?

“America first” and “peace through strength” are means for Trump’s administration to control and suppress American people through police state under the guise of national security, and to control foreign countries through nuclear military intimidation and bullying. It is the US that is threatening world peace not Iran or North Korea.

Trump had ridiculously attempted to conclude his speech by portraying an optimistic future vision of Americans returning to the wisdom of their founders forgetting that the founders’ so-called wisdom was based on genocide of indigenous people, on slavery and on racism. I could not stop myself from laughing when he concluded with “In America the people govern, the people rule, and the people are sovereign.” He must have been talking about the 1% elite.

Trump, Israel and the America First Scam

Trump’s Jerusalem decisions with the idea of putting America first is nothing but a scam being played on American people

On Wednesday the White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders equated Donald Trump’s declaration that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital and his decision to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem with putting America first.

To equate Trump’s Jerusalem decisions with the idea of putting America first is nothing but a scam being played on American people who genuinely care about other Americans and about America.

Today, when Trump signed the tax bill into law, he made a comment about rebuilding America’s infrastructure. He pointed out how the US spent over $7 trillion in the Middle East and said that money could have been used to improve the infrastructure across America. This statement of Trump’s, coming on the heels of his Jerusalem decision, shows he just doesn’t get it. Either that, or he is playing the fool.

Surely Trump knows that Israel and its powerful lobby decide key US decisions in US foreign policy for the Middle East. I’d be shocked if when candidate Trump met with his biggest campaign contributor, billionaire American Jewish casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, that Adelson did not make it very clear to Trump that Israel and the Israel lobby call the shots in regards to US Middle East foreign policy.

Pleasing Adelson is probably Trump’s motivation for claiming that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital, for the decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem and for Trump torpedoing the nuclear agreement with Iran.

Trump’s overwhelming desire to please Adelson, Israel and the Israel lobby does NOT at all put America first. This ungodly trinity that Trump works to please wants US politicians to start a new war for Israel’s benefit, this time against Iran. In 2013 at Yeshiva University in New York Adelson said regarding the US and Iran:

“You pick up your cell phone and you call somewhere in Nebraska and you say ‘OK, let it go,’ and so there’s an atomic weapon goes over, ballistic missiles in the middle of the desert that doesn’t hurt a soul, maybe a couple of rattlesnakes and scorpions or whatever. And then you say, ‘See? The next one is in the middle of Tehran.’”

Now the same forces of Israel, its lobby and Israel first individuals like Adelson are moving us down that same road to a new war for Israel’s benefit. These Israel first forces are moving Americans in the US military “as a lamb to the slaughter” to quote a phrase from the Hebrew/Jewish authors of the Bible.Trump must know that using the people in the American military to fight wars for the Jewish state of Israel is in no way, shape or form putting America first. US politicians from both parties voted to use American troops and American tax dollars for Israel’s benefit when they launched the war against Iraq in 2003.

Since our thoughts and beliefs determine our actions, if we really want to break free from this deadly cycle of religious inspired violence, we need to work to change the thinking of people who are currently under the spell of the “revealed” religions.

Putin in Egypt: Who’s the big player in the Middle East?

This could be just a coincidence, but the next day after Russia announced victory over terrorists in Syria, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Both of these events dramatically strengthen the role of the Russian Federation in the Middle East. The Arab world is looking up to Russia, and President Putin has arrived in Egypt to strengthen the strategic alliance with Egypt.

During the Cold War, Egypt was a difficult partner for the USSR. In the middle of the 20th century, the Kremlin was supporting the young republic in its opposition to Israel and the West, and Egypt was reciprocating. In late September 1970, when Anwar Sadat came to power there, he distanced himself from Moscow and went on rapprochement with Washington.

Even though the Soviet-Egyptian Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation was signed in Cairo on May 27, 1971, the relations between the two countries had been chilly since the mid-1970s. Since 1975, Soviet and Russian leaders have never paid a visit to Egypt. Vladimir Putin broke the sad tradition only in 2005.

After the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and the election of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Russia started establishing constructive relations with the new government. These days, President Putin is in Egypt again, where he received a very warm welcome. Egyptian president welcomed Putin personally at the airport and took him to the presidential palace. Cairo residents carried placards saying: “We are glad to welcome President of the Russian Federation and true friend of Egypt in the country of peace.”

Egyptian newspapers also took efforts to give Putin a hearty welcome. All major Egyptian publications predictably wondered when Russian tourists were going to return to Egypt. This issue has become one of the most difficult one on the agenda of the talks.

Since 2015, after the crash of the Russian passenger jetliner over the Sinai Peninsula, the air communication between the two countries has been suspended at the initiative of Moscow, and the tourist flow to Egypt has plummeted. Since then, the Egyptians have done a lot to meet various requirements of the Russian side to improve the security level of Egyptian airports. Russian security commissions have visited Egypt several times already, but they would always find various drawbacks.

Following the talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Vladimir Putin stated that the authorities of Egypt had succeeded in raising the level of security at their airports. The head of the Ministry for Transport of the Russian Federation, Maxim Sokolov, who arrived in Egypt as part of the Russian delegation too, said that one only needs to settle certain formalities before Egypt may expect Russian tourists to return in 2018.

In the long run, tourism was not the most important purpose for Putin to arrive in Cairo. The main topic of the talks was set by Donald Trump, who caused a wave of indignation in the entire Arab world having recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Putin’s goal is to secure the role of an arbitrator in the looming historical dispute.

Cairo has taken the side of Palestine. Egypt recognizes the right of Palestine to establish its own independent state with its capital in East Jerusalem. The decision of the US president has ruined those plans, and both Palestine and Egypt expect that Putin will be able to use his influence and give the Palestinians another chance.

Russia’s victory in Syria showed the Arab world that the United States will have to take Russia’s position into consideration in the Middle East. Egypt will not dare to confront Washington, no matter how hard they may try. Egypt will never stand up to confront Washington, no matter how the Egyptians may criticise Trump. In June 2017, Cairo was one of the seven closest allies of Washington in the Arab world that broke off diplomatic relations with Qatar.

As for Russia, Moscow has been gradually increasing its influence on Egypt to the detriment of the United States. For example, Russia helps Egypt build its first national nuclear power plant with a capacity of 4.8 thousand MW, and Moscow is expected to give an export credit for this seven-year project.

Last month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu paid a visit to Cairo, where he discussed issues of struggle against terrorism and military-technical cooperation. This year, Russia won a tender for the supplies of Ka-52A Katran deck-based helicopter for Egypt’s Mistral helicopter carriers Mistral and discusses a possibility to purchase a land version of the Ka-52.

On November 30, the Russian government approved a draft bilateral agreement, according to which Russian military aircraft can use Egyptian airfields when carrying out military missions. During the visit to Egypt, President Putin may reach an agreement to establish a Russian military base there that would strengthen Russia’s position in the Mediterranean even further.

Jailhouse Interview: Denied Asylum, Mexican Reporter Emilio Gutiérrez Faces Death If ICE Deports Him

We look at the danger facing journalists in Mexico and how the U.S. has responded to one of them. This week, Mexican journalist Gumaro Pérez Aguinaldo was assassinated in the southern state of Veracruz, becoming at least the 12th journalist to be killed in Mexico so far this year. Reporters Without Borders says the killing puts Mexico alongside Syria as the most murderous country for journalists. In a broadcast exclusive jailhouse interview, we speak by phone with another Mexican journalist: Emilio Gutiérrez Soto, who is fighting his deportation to Mexico as he is being held in a U.S. detention center in El Paso, Texas. Gutiérrez first sought asylum in the United States in 2008 after receiving death threats for reporting on alleged corruption in the Mexican military. He was detained then and eventually released while his asylum appeal was pending. The Trump administration denied asylum to the award-winning reporter last week. We also speak with his lawyer, Eduardo Beckett.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: We turn now to the danger facing journalists in Mexico and how the U.S. has responded to one of them. This week, Mexican journalist Gumaro Pérez Aguinaldo was assassinated in the southern state of Veracruz, becoming at least the 12th journalist to be killed in Mexico so far this year. He was attending a Christmas pageant at his son’s school in the city of Acayucan, when armed men burst into the classroom and murdered him in front of a room filled with schoolchildren. Pérez covered police for multiple outlets, including the news site he founded, La Voz del Sur, or The Voice of the South. He is at least the third journalist murdered in the city of Acayucan in recent months. His death marked the 12th murder of a media worker in Mexico in 2017, according to the press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders. The killing puts Mexico alongside Syria as the most murderous country for journalists, according to RSF.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, in a broadcast exclusive today, we conducted a jailhouse interview by phone with another Mexican journalist: Emilio Gutiérrez Soto, who is fighting his deportation to Mexico as he’s being held in a U.S. detention center in El Paso, Texas. Gutiérrez first sought asylum in the United States in 2008 after receiving death threats for reporting on alleged corruption in the Mexican military. He was detained then, eventually released while his asylum appeal was pending. Well, last week, his asylum appeal was denied. He now faces deportation back to Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Democracy Now!’s Juan González and I had a chance to speak with Gutiérrez directly in detention, where he is in jail in El Paso.

EMILIO GUTIÉRREZ SOTO: [translated] Look, Juan, I wrote some articles where I described how the military acting in the northwest of Chihuahua, specifically in the municipality of Ascensión, Chihuahua, and particularly the population of Palomas, which is by the border with the state of New Mexico. This caused disgust at the Ministry of Defense, which sent the head of the 5th Military Zone in Chihuahua, General García Vega, to threaten me, saying I had already written three articles noting corruption and assaults against the population by members of the military. And he sentenced me. He said, “You’ve written three articles, and there’s not going to be a fourth one.” And, of course, there was a fourth article. And I filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission and also with the Office of the Attorney General for the state. As a result, for a time after those threats, they sought some sort of reconciliation with me, but the terms never came about. In this state of affairs, I was somewhat fearful in the face of a serious warning by a general, a high-level commander from the Mexican Army.

Back in 2008, the Army forcibly entered my home, knocking down the main door, threatening us with their firearms. They threw me to the floor. And they said they were searching for weapons and drugs. They destroyed our home. And, of course, they found nothing, nothing at all. And once again, great fear has come, such that I had to stay up all night while my son was sleeping. I had to look out the window to see who might be coming by. And my sleep—well, I would catch up on my sleep at the office, while at the same time doing my work as a journalist. A month later, on May 5th, at night, after they broke into our house and had destroyed our house, we took more precautions.

And on June 16th, 2008, we decided to enter the United States seeking political asylum. First, we said that the military were keeping close surveillance over me and that a friend of mine told me that a relative of hers in the repeat response elite group told my friend—told her that there was a plan to kill me. Obviously, I had to quickly take what I needed from my home. I went to a friend of a home where my son was. There was a religious service going on there. And we went to a ranch on Saturday, July 14th. And on the 16th, we opted to cross into the United States at the border post of Berrendo into the state of New Mexico, where we placed ourselves at the disposal of U.S. immigration officials, seeking political asylum.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Was it your intention to move to the United States, or did you just feel that you had to as a result of the threats to your life?

EMILIO GUTIÉRREZ SOTO: [translated] No. We did this with the intention of moving permanently, because when there is a threat by the military, it’s very serious. Plus, there were already antecedents in terms of how the military were acting, and, in some cases, people would not appear again.

AMY GOODMAN: Emilio, can you talk about what deportation would mean? First, describe where you are in the El Paso jail. And then, what would it mean if you were sent back to Mexico?

EMILIO GUTIÉRREZ SOTO: [translated] Well, if we are deported, that obviously implies death. Why? Because ICE, under the Department of Homeland Security of the United States, by law, must give a report to the immigration authorities of Mexico and the consulate. And the immigration officials in Mexico have no credibility. It’s impossible to trust in them. To the contrary, many of those officials, many personnel at the consulate or immigration service, are caught up with organized crime. And organized crime is precisely the Mexican government. If the government didn’t give its consent for criminal groups to work with impunity, certainly the conditions would be different. But the government of Mexico facilitates the work of criminal groups who operate with total impunity. The government of Mexico, we all know, is the most corrupt government in the hemisphere and obviously enjoys no credibility.

Now, the conditions we find ourselves at this ICE jail in El Paso are truly denigrating. We have seen—my son and myself—most of the immigrants detained here are from Central and South America, the majority. We’re not so many Mexicans here at this jail. Now, given the extreme poverty, well, of course, that is experienced in Mexico, but even more so in Central and South America. For many of the persons detained, it seems that the conditions are adequate, are pleasant. But they are denigrating. The food is poor nutritionally. And it is not pleasant at all to eat the food here. Not at all. Plus, the rations, the portions are too small.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, Emilio, the immigration authorities here in the United States are saying that you have no proof, no documentary proof, of your claims or that no witnesses have appeared to back up your claims. How do you respond to that?

EMILIO GUTIÉRREZ SOTO: [translated] I believe that the immigration authorities are an institution based on lies. It would appear that I would need to enter the United States with bullet holes on the front and back of my body or mutilated, which is what the institutional criminal group—the Mexican government—generally does.

AMY GOODMAN: That’s Mexican journalist Emilio Gutiérrez Soto, speaking in an exclusive jailhouse broadcast interview from a U.S. detention center in El Paso, where he is fighting his deportation to Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.

NERMEEN SHAIKH: Gutiérrez first sought asylum in the United States in 2008 after receiving death threats for reporting on alleged corruption in the Mexican military. He was detained then and eventually released when his asylum appeal was pending. He lived free in the U.S. for nearly a decade. Last week, the Trump administration denied his asylum appeal.

Well, for more, we’re joined in El Paso, Texas, via Democracy Now! video stream by his lawyer, Eduardo Beckett.

Eduardo Beckett, could you tell us with the situation is now with your client, Emilio Gutiérrez?

EDUARDO BECKETT: Yes, good morning. It’s an honor to be here.

My client’s asylum claim was actually denied on July 19th of 2017. He filed an appeal with the Board of Immigration Appeals. The appeal was dismissed on a technicality. At that moment, he could be deported anytime, so we filed a stay, a stay removal, both with the original immigration judge, with a motion to reopen, a stay with ICE, and both of them were denied by the judge and denied by ICE. So we filed an emergency stay with the Board of Immigration Appeals and a motion to reopen. The stay removal by the Board of Immigration Appeals was granted, and his motion to reopen his asylum case is pending.

What we’re doing right now, we’re trying to get him released on humanitarian parole. And as my client has told you, you know, right now we’re—ICE is operating basically on steroids. And I would say that my client is a prototypical example of someone who should have been granted asylum. He’s a journalist. He has openly criticized the Mexican government for years and years, nonstop. His life is in great danger upon deportation. He has no criminal history. He entered legally, and yet ICE is treating him like a criminal. So this is the criminalization of asylum seekers. So that’s the situation right now.

AMY GOODMAN: Eduardo Beckett, explain the grounds on which he was denied his claim for political—his request for political asylum here. I mean, we just reported today in our headlines and in this segment about yet another Mexican journalist who was gunned down in Mexico. As you heard in this interview, Emilio Gutiérrez fears, of course, if he is deported, that that is what will happen to him: He’ll be assassinated. He’s being detained with his son. Can you talk about the denial under the Trump administration? And what is his recourse now?

EDUARDO BECKETT: Of course. So, the denial was basically like a 30-page document, where the judge makes an analysis of the conditions in Mexico. And as you stated, the eyewitnesses from Mexico did not show up to the court, did not want to cooperate. And I understand 100 percent, because they live in Mexico, so I believe that the witnesses were scared to come forward or to send an affidavit. Nevertheless, my client submitted many, many expert witness documents, corroborating evidence, overwhelming evidence, of the conditions of Mexico. And, you know, like you mentioned, 12 journalists have been executed—a couple days ago, one in Veracruz in front of his children at a Christmas party. When I told my client what happened, he was crying, and he was shaking, and he was saying that he felt bad, that he knows that it’s going to happen to him.

So, in this case, the judge got it wrong. So his recourse is to file a motion to reopen the case, and we’re going to, hopefully, get to redo his whole case again, because I think the judge got it wrong. And the message that the judge is sending is basically saying, “We don’t want to protect journalists, and we don’t think, you know, that you corroborated your asylum claim.” But the U.S. Supreme Court only requires a 10 percent chance that upon deportation to Mexico, that you will be tortured or executed or persecuted. The REAL ID Act of 2005 does require corroborating evidence, if it’s readily available and within reason. In this case, to force a witness to come forward, at the risk that that witness might be executed, is unreasonable. So those are the types of things that we’re going to be asking the Board of Immigration Appeals to examine and overrule the judge and hopefully give us a new—the opportunity to retry his asylum claim.

AMY GOODMAN: And the role of the local congressmember? Has he been visited by anyone locally in El Paso?

EDUARDO BECKETT: So, what we’re doing also, we’re doing a campaign to shed light. You know, under the Trump administration, as you mentioned, we feel the erosion of due process in an exaggerated rate. We’re asking our local congressman, we’re asking our clergy, we’re asking the community to support my client and to ask for his release. I did have a conversation with my congressman in Washington, D.C., yesterday, his staff. And we asked him to—

AMY GOODMAN: And he is who?

EDUARDO BECKETT: Congressman Beto O’Rourke. Beto O’Rourke.

AMY GOODMAN: Yes.

EDUARDO BECKETT: So, we had a meeting with him on the phone. I did not get to speak to him directly, but I—you know, through his staff. And we asked him to support us and to put pressure on ICE to get my client released. Like I said, no criminal history. He’s always complied with all the—with the law. And, you know, it’s sad that he’s being detained like a criminal. This is a guy that promotes democracy. This is a guy that we want here in the United States. And so, we’re reaching out not only to him, but to other senators and congressmen and anyone who wants to help. Journalists around the world have called us. So we have a lot of people that are supporting us. And that’s why we’re here today, to highlight this.

AMY GOODMAN: Eduardo Beckett, I want to thank you so much for being with us, lawyer for the detained journalist Emilio Gutiérrez. He’s detained in an immigration jail in El Paso, Texas. He applied for political asylum. He was just denied by the Trump administration. He is appealing that decision. He is in jail with his son. We will continue to follow this story. If you want to hear the whole interview with Emilio Gutiérrez that I did with Juan González, you can go to democracynow.org. This is Democracy Now! Stay with us.
