Intercourse events, medicine and homosexual escorts on the pope’s residence

Intercourse events, medicine and homosexual escorts on the pope’s residence: Undercover within the Vatican

“We’ll have sufficient time for the interview,” the author and journalist Frédéric Martel assures me. “Let’s go to a film.” Friday night. I’d arrived right here two hours earlier in an effort to interview Martel about his new e book, “Within the Closet of the Vatican: Energy, Homosexuality, Hypocrisy” (Bloomsbury, translated by Shaun Whiteside). The entire world is speaking about it. In my opinion, I’m flattered star creator in Europe, and within the West typically, is devoting high quality time to me amid the chaos he’s caught up in. His telephone doesn’t cease ringing. Certainly, Martel had simply returned to Paris from a two-day promotional tour in Spain and has been invited to look on nearly each potential tv program.

Martel’s e book was printed concurrently in quite a few languages and is about to look in dozens extra. 4 days after its February 20 launch it already topped the best-seller lists in France, Portugal, Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Holland and England. The Instances of London has simply printed an extended, complimentary evaluation by a professor of spiritual research from Oxford.

Regardless of the time stress, Martel, 51, insists that as background for my interview it’s necessary that we see Francois Ozon’s new movie, “By the Grace of God.” It tells the true story of a bunch of males from town of Lyon, the place a pleasant-looking priest who led their Catholic youth motion abused them after they had been younger and left them scarred for all times, bodily and mentally. A whole era of boys endured that abuse, with the data of the mother and father and of the cardinal of Lyon. Lastly, a couple of of them mustered the braveness to reveal the priest and the duplicitous cardinal who lined up for him within the diocese.

Once we arrive, the movie show on the Les Halles business middle is totally packed. The rationale, Martel explains, is that the newspapers and newscasts that day dwelt at size on the conviction – for overlaying up a long time of sexual abuse by the priest – that lastly compelled the cardinal to go to Rome and submit his resignation to the pope, who rejected it.

Martel’s e book offers with the same topic, though from a distinct angle. “Within the Closet of the Vatican” (whose French title is, actually, “Sodom: An Investigation Contained in the Vatican”) is the results of the creator’s final four-year keep in Vatican Metropolis, in the course of the present decade, the place he operated as a self-styled undercover agent.

It began when the producers of his common program on French state radio despatched him to Rome to do a narrative on the waves of refugees from Syria and Africa. It was there that Martel encountered for the primary time a community of younger migrants who had been working as male prostitutes round Rome’s major practice station. They instructed him about an in depth system of homosexual relationships that they maintained with junior clerics and senior figures alike within the Vatican. Martel determined to dig additional.

Frédéric Martel. “I didn’t arouse suspicion as a result of I appeared like a innocent curiosity.”

By way of the French embassy within the Vatican he submitted a request to put in writing a e book concerning the Church’s city-state. The request was permitted, and from that second the gates of a world that he by no means imagined existed had been opened to him. He spoke to a whole lot of clergymen and acolytes and dozens of high-level figures, was invited into cardinals’ intimate quarters, met younger male prostitutes, talked to members of the Pontifical Swiss Guard and extra. He rigorously cross-checked testimonies and verified rumors with the assistance of data he acquired from the Italian police.

Over that interval, Martel got here and went within the Vatican, recorded his impressions, honed his insights. There’s a passage in his e book by which he relates how he stumbled on an umbrella within the colours of the LGBT rainbow on the entrance to the Vatican’s official visitor home, and puzzled who it belonged to and what it was doing on this holy of holies. In a approach, Martel is that umbrella: one thing whose presence folks turned accustomed to, to the purpose the place they even stopped asking what he was truly plotting to put in writing. He was thus in a position to compile helpful details about prison immorality on the highest ranks of the Catholic Church. About intercourse events and medicines contained in the papal residence, concerning the prostitutes, the sexual harassment and likewise after all concerning the pedophilia. His findings are harrowing, fascinating, at occasions amusing – and worthy of being made into a movie.

In fact Martel, whose e book is thrilling, intriguing and beautifully written, is just not the primary individual to take care of the Catholic Church on this context. In recent times we’ve got witnessed a rising stream of movies, books and journalistic revelations, in the identical vein. However not like a lot of these works, Martel’s 600 fact-packed pages pull no punches about what, within the creator’s view, is a central cause for the immense disaster that has befallen the Catholic hierarchy up to now era. In Martel’s opinion, the direct duty lies with none apart from the veiled and repressed homosexuality of the clergy, which forces them to stay a power lie. In different phrases, to lengthy for the corporate of males whereas preaching to their flocks towards any such attraction and cravings of the flesh as such.

The gist of what Martel says is that there’s a very excessive proportion of closeted gays among the many Church’s management who can not below any circumstances admit their sexual proclivity. Quite the opposite: They deny it in self-defense, shield every one other’s sexual licentiousness, collaborate with reactionary regimes world wide, persecute homosexuals and incessantly preach towards what’s thought-about sexual permissiveness – together with complete rejection of the usage of contraceptives and vigorous antagonism to abortion.

How did all this come about? Was there the same scenario within the Church through the Center Ages, for instance? And in that case, what’s new in Martel’s e book?

Martel: “On the face of it, everyone knows, or at the least can conjecture, that the Catholic Church, and particularly these within the senior positions of its hierarchy, is a paradise for gays, for the easy cause that clergymen are commanded to be chaste and are forbidden to take wives. And there may be nothing extra appropriate for a younger man who needs to cover his sexual inclination towards males than to commit himself to the priesthood. Within the e book I clarify how this illusory paradise deteriorated into a real hell, right into a sinful, depraved Sodom, whose inhabitants discovered themselves imprisoned inside it all the time with no hope of breaking out of the circle of denial and hypocrisy which have seemingly change into second nature to them.

“I determine the reason for the disaster within the sexual-liberation revolution, which made the Church much more gay and on the identical time much more homophobic and much more in denial of its personal bare reality. I consider that now, with the publicity of so many instances of sexual abuse, pedophilia and sexual corruption throughout the Church, that it has reached some extent of no return. One thing has to alter drastically. However it’s not clear to me how something could be modified there.”

This isn’t the primary time that Martel, a self-aware one that got here out of the closet at a younger age, has confronted the same morally corrupt phenomenon as a writer-journalist. “Within the Closet of the Vatican” is definitely a continuation, maybe at a extra subtle degree each by way of element and magnificence writing, of his first e book, “The Pink and the Black, Homosexuals in France Since 1968,” which precipitated a storm on its publication in France in 1996. In it Martel offers with the rise of the homosexual liberation motion within the West and accuses the LGBT neighborhood in France of being in denial of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. The homosexual hangouts in Paris had been extremely worthwhile companies on the time; furthermore, it was handy for folks to grab on the silly concept that AIDS was a lie being unfold by American conservatives. Ideas I already had had been confirmed once I learn “The Pink and the Black,” and had been subsequently included in my 1999 Hebrew-language novel “Ziffer and His Variety”: specifically, that gays usually are not extra “delicate” or extra “affable” or extra “peace loving” or extra “artwork loving” or extra “nattily dressed” than others. And, like every minority that feels persecuted, their feeling of being persecuted, and their zealousness to protect their separate identification, can have a constructive impact, but in addition a really damaging one.

“Within the Closet of the Vatican” reinforces the thesis of “The Pink and the Black.” But when the brand new e book additionally, by its nature, foments scandal, this time it made Martel an in a single day star.

Benedict XVI’s despair

That success is just not self-evident from the creator’s perspective. Frédéric Martel was born right into a farming household from a small, unemployment-plagued village adjoining to the Forest of Avignon. As such, he belongs to a breed of people that appear to not have been born to succeed. Solely those that are acquainted with “deep France” know what number of obstacles stand in the way in which of an adolescent who was born within the ostensibly colourful French periphery, and desires to extricate himself from it and bask within the candy odor of success. The chances are towards him, as a result of in an effort to be counted amongst France’s mental elite, you have to graduate from certainly one of Paris’ prestigious excessive colleges, the place many of the college students are from distinguished households, get by two extra years of grueling research, earlier than being hand-picked to go on to the main establishments of upper studying, such because the École Normale Supérieur, from the place the highway is paved to a tenured place within the civil service.

Martel had no likelihood of coming into that revered and predictable monitor. However, not like many individuals of his era and background, neither did he yield to the stifling provincial life into which he was born. He labored laborious to acquire a doctorate in social sciences, adopted by a part-time job in state radio, a journalistic place on the web journal Slate, and a lecturer’s appointment at Zurich College of the Arts, to which he travels forwards and backwards every week. For a time he was France’s cultural attaché in Bucharest, afterward in Boston.

I met him 22 years in the past, shortly after the publication of “The Pink and the Black.” He’d come to Tel Aviv as a contract journalist in an effort to write a collection of articles concerning the lifetime of gays in Israel. Betwixt and between he wrote books, a few of which shook up France, amongst them “Tradition in America” (2006), by which he spoke about America’s nice benefit over French tradition by way of originality and creativity. He attributed the languidness of French tradition to its dependence on authorities budgets and the absence of competitors for them. That the French readership didn’t like listening to this goes with out saying.

Nor are many within the Catholic Church happy by what Martel has written concerning the Vatican. I ask him why folks opened doorways to him with out suspicion, and remind him that he instructed me that some leaders of the Church in France have been spreading a rumor that the e book was commissioned by the current pope, Francis, in an effort to besmirch his opponents within the Church hierarchy. He dismisses such accusations vehemently: “Nonsense. I succeeded in penetrating the Vatican as a result of I’m French. If I had been an Italian journalist, they’d by no means have shared their secrets and techniques with me. I didn’t arouse their suspicion as a result of I appeared like a innocent curiosity.”

Through the years when he was nearly one of many household in Vatican Metropolis, relates Martel, he was a goal of lustful glances and erotic strokes wherever he went. One senior spiritual determine he wished to talk with scheduled their assembly for the night and emphasised that this was precisely the time he took his bathe. One other one grabbed his penis.

I ask Martel whether or not the set off for writing the e book was associated to his present process himself, as an adolescent, experiences just like these we heard about in Ozon’s movie. He assures me that this isn’t the case, despite the fact that he attended a Catholic college till the age of 13. He remembers vividly the charismatic village priest in his city and writes about him with unabashed fondness within the epilogue. His title was Louis. Afterward Martel discovered that Louis was homosexual and likewise that he died of AIDS.

Equally, the e book paints a constructive image of Pope Francis. In spite of everything, he’s making an attempt with all his may to eradicate pedophilia amongst clergymen and to expunge as a lot as potential the hypocrisy that has change into ingrained among the many clergy, notably in regard to homosexuality. However not all of Francis’ predecessors obtain the identical therapy. Martel goals his criticism particularly at two popes who, in his view, precipitated the Church colossal injury and are in massive measure chargeable for its ethical deterioration, hypocrisy and tendencies towards prevarication: the German pope Joseph Ratzinger, who was Pope Benedict XVI (2005-2013), and Pope Paul VI (1963-1978).

Martel: “When Ratzinger grasped that Europe was not shopping for the Church’s conservative and homophobic views, and that the enlightened West as an entire was transferring towards allowing homosexual marriages, he made a mistake and befriended the worst of the dictatorships, together with conservative Muslim international locations that persecute gays. That was additionally Church coverage through the period of Pope Paul VI.”

However the metal partitions of conservatism had been solely a façade. Behind them, contained in the Vatican, he says, a Sodom existed amid actions “together with chemsex events [gay sex and hard drugs] that came about throughout the papal residence itself. In my e book I write about this episode, which occurred through the interval of Benedict XVI and was uncovered within the time of the current pope – about events that had been massive group orgies by which intercourse and laborious medicine typically blended right into a harmful cocktail and the friends wore provocative clothes. All that data exploded within the Italian press again in the summertime of 2017. It transpired that Msgr. Luigi Capozzi, the non-public secretary to Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio for about 10 years, had been arrested by the Vatican gendarmerie on suspicion of organizing sex-and-drug events in his non-public house within the Vatican.

“Capozzi, whom the pope drastically esteemed, lived in a wing of the papal residence itself,” Martel continues. “I do know the constructing nicely, as a result of I dined there many occasions. One in all its entrances opens onto sovereign Italian territory; the opposite into the Vatican. Capozzi’s wing was thus ideally located for organizing events of this sort. On the one hand, the Italian police didn’t have authorization to look it – the identical was true with respect to his diplomatic automobile – as a result of he was located throughout the Vatican. However alternatively, he might go away his house with out passing by the Pontifical Guard, as a result of one door exited on to an space of Italian state jurisdiction. Since then it’s all been uncovered within the media. Capozzi was hospitalized within the Pius XI clinic and has not been seen in public once more. Effectively, a trial for the use and dissemination of laborious medicine hasn’t but been held, so he’s nonetheless presumed harmless.”

This isn’t the one affair that Martel mentions from the interval of Benedict XVI. He devotes a particular chapter to the pope’s go to to Cuba in 2012. The go to, which was presupposed to be a historic occasion in one of many final bastions of communism, devastated the pope. Backed by testimonies of high-level figures within the Vatican who accompanied the pope on the journey, and providing a vivid, concrete description, the chapter captures the despair that seized the pope when he grasped the size of the gay prostitution and the pedophilia throughout the ranks of the Church there. What was flagrantly monstrous within the Cuban case was that the Castro regime knew what was occurring throughout the Church and turned a blind eye, in return for the complete cooperation of the Havana archbishopric with the regime.

All this led to the Benedict’s resignation in 2013, Martel suggests. A resignation, he writes, that was distinctive although not distinctive within the historical past of the Church. The formal cause was the pope’s poor well being, however within the creator’s view, he stepped down within the wake of the full despair attributable to the Cuba go to. Martel goes a step farther. He hints – at first, gently – on the risk that the tormented conscience of the pope Joseph Ratzinger within the gay realm had been additionally a part of a “private drama.”

‘Two worlds of distress’

The chapter that follows expands on the story. Martel remembers Ratzinger’s eccentric apparel, which perplexed even essentially the most harmless of believers. For instance, the raucous pink costume he wore on a go to to an Italian jail, or his extravagant Ray-Ban sun shades, the purple sneakers that peeked out from beneath the papal gown and generated rumors, and different equipment that didn’t clearly didn’t conform with the Church’s demand for modesty amongst its believers. And there was additionally, he writes, the good-looking younger priest Georg Ganswein, Ratzinger’s private aide and lover. Although on this case Martel is just not the primary to make his declare. He attracts on a earlier scandalous German-language e book about Ratzinger, “The Holy Sham,” from 2010, by a younger Bavarian theologian, David Berger.

Martel additionally devotes an extended chapter to the person who, in his view, was essentially the most abhorrent pope of all – Paul VI, one of many strictest and most conservative leaders of the Catholic Church. Within the face of the sexual revolution, within the 1960s, this pope toughened the Church’s stance: towards the tablet, towards masturbation, towards homosexuality. However as in lots of instances by which it turned out afterward that essentially the most ardent combatants towards sexual permissiveness had been additionally the prime suspects, Martel elaborates on the rumors and gossip that had been rife within the Italian press a few romantic relationship between the pontiff and a theater and TV actor named Palo Carlini, the vigorous denials and the final word dismissal of suspicions by none apart from Ratzinger himself, who signed the decree that led to the title “Venerable,” and later sainthood, being conferred on Paul.

Pope Paul VI.
Vatican Metropolis

However forbidden affairs within the Vatican itself usually are not the laborious core of Martel’s e book. Much more surprising, although additionally amusing, is the chapter about how male escorts and prostitutes (Arab Muslims most popular) are procured – from the realm of the Termini, Rome’s major railway station – by the Vatican. Right here the data is first-hand, Martel having achieved the fieldwork himself. He explains the strategy to me: “With a view to examine the sexual ties between Muslim male prostitutes from round Rome’s central practice station and Catholic clergymen within the Vatican, I interviewed in the middle of three years about 60 Rome prostitutes, typically with assistance from an interpreter.”

From which language to which language?

“With a view to familiarize your self with the world of male prostitutes round Rome’s central station, it is advisable to be multilingual and communicate Romanian, Arabic, Portuguese and Spanish. I used to be helped an awesome deal in studying about these goings-on by a younger man named Mohammed, who in return for a drink or a meal gave me details about what was taking place within the neighborhood. Mohammed is a Tunisian who works with two pals, Billal and Sami, as prostitutes in Rome. I had one other collaborator, Gabi, a younger Romanian intercourse employee from Bucharest. He instructed me that from his viewpoint, the busiest days for work are Fridays, when the clergymen go away the Vatican in civilian apparel, and Sunday afternoon, when the boredom within the Vatican drives them exterior. He can determine them by the crucifix round their neck after they disrobe, but in addition with out that – by the stress they’re below. Generally the priest takes him in to the Vatican. If the priest is a bigwig, they inform me, he’ll receives a commission generously, typically 100 or 200 euros as an alternative of the same old 50 to 60. A few of them confirmed me proudly the telephone numbers of the clergymen they go to commonly.

“I do know of 4 cardinals who took their prestigious prostitutes to mansions or luxurious residences exterior the Vatican and typically even to the papal summer season residence at Castel Gandolfo. Outwardly, all 4 are completely homophobic, and so they additionally by some means organize to not pay with their very own cash for the costly sexual companies – about 2,000 euros per night.”

Appears like a well-oiled enterprise enterprise.

“Let’s say that typically, the prostitutes’ day by day schedule amazingly matched the clergymen’ schedule. Early within the morning, and through the day, I met with clergymen, bishops and cardinals for interviews. They weren’t prepared to satisfy for skilled discussions after 6 P.M. Within the evenings. in contrast, I interviewed the male prostitutes, who didn’t begin work till 7 o’clock. In different phrases, the clergymen had been free to speak to me when their hustlers had been dozing, and my interviews with the hustlers came about when the clergymen had been already drained from their day by day labors. I wanted to grasp that these two worlds of sexual distress had been mutually coordinated.”

Let’s speak concerning the Pontifical Swiss Guards. In your e book you inform a few guard named Nathanael who opens his coronary heart to you.

“I met secretly with Nathanael – which is after all a fictitious title – a few dozen occasions. He instructed me what really bothers him about his service within the Vatican: the insistent and typically aggressive courtship of quite a few cardinals. Nathanael is just not homosexual and likewise not what’s often called gay-friendly. He instructed me he was outraged by the courtship and even instructed me the names of the cardinals. He, who vowed to be prepared to put down his life for the pope, was disgusted at what he noticed.”

Have been there different members of the Swiss Guard who complained?

“Sure. After I left the Vatican I met with a former member of the Swiss Guard. Like his colleague, he stated he had been sexually harassed dozens of occasions by senior Vatican figures. One methodology, he stated, is to summon a guard to the bed room on some pretext. One other is to go away a present with a calling card on a guard’s mattress. This guard instructed me that he realized there was no approach he might complain concerning the sexual harassment, as a result of they get threatened that in the event that they speak they won’t be able to search out work, but in addition vice versa: In the event that they don’t speak, the Church will assist them discover a job after they return to their civilian life in Switzerland.”

A member of the Swiss Guard stands on the Bronze Door (Portone Di Bronzo) on the Vatican, February 24, 2019.

You write concerning the Church’s struggle on masturbation. Are you able to clarify to me the reason for this obsession to intrude so flagrantly on others’ privateness?

“I interviewed fairly a couple of graduates of seminaries. In my estimation, 75 p.c of those that attend the seminaries are homosexual. All of them instructed me that in our day, masturbation, which up to now was a topic not talked about in public, has change into, on the Vatican’s directions, a central problem within the coaching of clergymen. The reason being not the biblical injunction towards spilling your seed in useless, however the necessity to train totalitarian supervision over the younger man who’s lower off from his household and from his physique: It’s the negation of persona within the service of the collective. The Church’s opposition to masturbation turned an idée fixe, completely insane, with the outcome that those that masturbate essentially stay in a type of ‘closet’ inside a closet – a type of doubly locked gay identification. What a disgrace for the Church, which is preventing masturbation greater than it’s preventing pedophilia. That claims all of it.”

Aren’t you afraid of libel fits?

“I’ve full documentation and irrefutable proof for each declare I make in my e book. On high of which each element was scrutinized by my lawyer, William Bourdon. In some instances he did ask me to tone down overly piquant particulars.”

I met the energetic lawyer over a dinner that I cooked in Martel’s house on Saturday night. Up to now, Bourdon stated, sighing with reduction, no libel fits have been filed by clergymen. Through the desk speak, which revolved additionally, after all, across the upcoming election in Israel, I discovered that the weird experience that Bourdon displayed about Israeli politics stemmed from the truth that his brother, Jerome, is a professor of communications at Tel Aviv College.

The Israeli connection

There’s an Israeli angle in Martel’s e book. In truth, it may be stated to be a really vital angle, with out which the e book may by no means have been written. Martel was in Israel a couple of years in the past to put in writing a collection of articles about how the usage of high-tech in agriculture. Throughout his journey, he by the way took an curiosity in whether or not there have been archaeological stays from the biblical Sodom and the place it was situated: in Israel or Jordan. All of the consultants instructed him that makes an attempt to corroborate Bible tales by the use of archaeology won’t ever produce an unequivocal reply.

His private quest for the biblical Sodom is a beautiful chapter – however in the long run it didn’t make it into the Vatican e book for causes of size. On the Jordanian facet of the Useless Sea, says Martel, he met archaeologists who related the traditional Sodom with Tall el-Hammam, northeast of the Useless Sea, the place they had been excavating. A while later, he visited the Israeli facet. Biblical Sodom, on this facet, is a distant idea that has nothing in widespread with the accelerated improvement underway within the space. He says he was amazed by the moshavim, the kibbutzim, the grand inns. With Aviad, a neighborhood kibbutznik, Martel visited Lot’s Cave and climbed Mount Sodom. And he discovered that Sodom wasn’t destroyed as a result of its inhabitants had been homosexual; that’s what the Church teaches, however not what the Bible says.

Nonetheless, he determined to title the unique French version of his e book concerning the Vatican “Sodoma.” As a result of, simply as within the authentic Sodom, the prime sin was not homosexuality however a basic corruption of ethical requirements that might not be remedied apart from by the place being destroyed right down to its very foundations – so, too, maybe, his outlook on the Vatican: a spot rife with gay exercise however the place homosexuality itself is just not the core of the issue. That drawback, moderately, is the final destruction of ethical virtues, of which homosexuality is only one aspect, though it’s not clear whether or not it’s the trigger or the result of the scenario. Not like the destiny of the biblical Sodom, Martel foresees, with applicable warning, the potential for restore below the rule of the current pope, Francis, who for the primary time has refused to give up to the Church’s conventional homophobic method. As a substitute of rebuking gays, he uttered the very consoling rhetorical query, “Who am I to evaluate you?”

Frédéric, I feel your e book ought to be the premise for a grandiose movie that can enable folks to see with their very own eyes all of the unbelievable issues that you simply skilled throughout your four-year investigation.

“I’ve considered that. I have already got six proposals from American producers to make a movie out of it. The issue is that nobody will say to the digital camera what they instructed me. And positively they received’t open the hidden doorways of the Vatican for me, as they did earlier than.”

The violence of “relative calm”

Relatives mourn during the funeral of Muhammad Dar Adwan during his funeral in Qalandiya refugee camp, 2 April. Dar Adwan was shot and killed by Israeli occupation forces during a raid on the camp earlier in the day.

The first anniversary of Gaza’s Great March of Return has now passed and Israel is counting down the days to an election that will determine its next government. Egypt and the United Nations have scrambled to head off a major armed confrontation between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, and so cross-boundary projectile and warplane fire have gone silent.

Thus “relative calm” reigns over the West Bank and Gaza Strip as Israel’s military occupation approaches its 52nd year.

“Relative calm” – the meaninglessness is baked into the phrase – being that Palestinians are still deprived of their basic rights, which are treated as subject to negotiation even by the UN.

Tania Hary@taniahary

This morning Israel “re-opened” Erez & Kerem Shalom crossings, the only pedestrian/commercial passageways connecting Gaza to the West Bank and Israel. And by re-open, I mean resumed enforcement of the closure, which in and of itself is ongoing punishment of two million people.

This morning: Erez & Kerem Shalom Crossings returned to normal operations; prohibition on access to “fishing zone” removed. Reminder: Closing crossings & blocking access to the sea constitute collective punishment and are in violation of intl law. More:

Those deprived rights include Palestinians’ very right to life.

A protester was fighting for his life Friday night after being critically injured by an Israeli military sharpshooter during Great March of Return demonstrations earlier in the day, Gaza’s health ministry said.

Nearly 60 were injured by live fire during the day’s protests, according to Al Mezan, a human rights group in Gaza, and more than 40 others were directly hit by tear gas canisters.

More than 200 Palestinians, including 43 children, have been killed during Great March of Return protests since their launch 53 weeks ago.

The most recent fatality was 26-year-old Faris Abu Harjas, who died from his injuries on Tuesday after being shot in the stomach during protests the previous week.

“Killed in clashes”

In the West Bank this week, two Palestinians paid with their lives the cost of maintaining Israel’s settlement colony regime, which has claimed nearly 40 Palestinians in that territory and the Gaza Strip so far this year.

Muhammad Ali Dar Adwan, 23, was shot and killed by soldiers who had raided Qalandiya refugee camp early Tuesday. Israeli media stated that Adwan was “killed in clashes”; the man’s family said he was shot at close range while “getting into a vehicle near his home,” as reported by Ma’an News Agency.

The following day, Muhammad Abd al-Fattah, 23, was shot and killed by an Israeli settler at Huwwara checkpoint near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

Yehoshua Sherman, an Israeli settler, said that Abd al-Fattah was holding a knife and tried to open his car door and attack his teenage daughter.

“I went outside and with the help of a driver who was behind me we neutralized the terrorist and thankfully we weren’t hurt,” Sherman told Israeli media.

In a place where street executions have become commonplace, there will be no investigation of Sherman and no state authority will question whether Abd al-Fattah posed an imminent threat to life that would justify the use of lethal force against him.

Instead, Israel’s defense ministry has authorized the construction of a new road serving settlers in the area that will allow Israelis to bypass Palestinian villages. Another Palestinian was killed by an Israeli motorist driving through Huwwara village in 2017.

Israel claims to build such roads for security purposes but they are an integral part of its settlement infrastructure in the West Bank, built in violation of international law, which forbids an occupying power from transferring its civilian population to the territory it occupies.

The human rights group B’Tselem has stated that Israel’s segregated road system in the West Bank “bears striking similarities to the racist apartheid regime that existed in South Africa until 1994.”

Gaza hospitals “on brink of collapse”

Death by direct fire is not the only way that Israel’s occupation deprived Palestinians of their right to life this week.

On Tuesday, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel stated that a Gaza toddler died the previous night after Israel denied a travel permit to his mother, and thus she was unable to take him to East Jerusalem for medical treatment.

Palestinians in Gaza requiring treatment in the West Bank or Israel have their cases referred to the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which pays for the treatment, and then on to Israel, which has the final say in whether an individual may travel.

Patients who require multiple procedures and follow-up care are repeatedly subjected to bureaucratic delays and sometimes even interrogation and arrest.

Gaza’s already overburdened healthcare system has been brought to the “brink of collapse” due to the staggering number of casualties during Great March of Return protests, UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees, recently stated.

Chronic electricity shortages in Gaza, which has been under Israeli-enforced land, sea and air blockade for 12 years, has come close to seeing hospitals shut down altogether.

Most of the 11,000 healthcare employees working in government facilities in the territory have not received regular payment since July 2014, and receive less than half of their salaries every 40-50 days, according to the World Health Organization.

The Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, reeling from a financial crisis after Israel withheld $138 million in Palestinian tax revenue, recently announced that it would no longer refer patients in Gaza to Israeli hospitals, instead routing them to facilities in the West Bank and other Arab countries.

A spokesperson for the PA’s health ministry told Al Mezan, a human rights group in Gaza, that the move was intended to cut inflated health costs.

Al Mezan welcomed the effort to nationalize healthcare but warned that the measure could affect patients’ health, particularly those needing life-saving treatment.

“This concern is underscored by the state of Gaza’s impoverished health sector, which is characterized by a lack of medical equipment, medicines and medical supplies, and lack of adequately-trained personnel, which results in long waitlists and inability to provide care,” the group stated.

“Patients’ rights to healthcare, physical integrity and life are paramount and must be kept out of any political dispute. These rights should be a priority on the national agenda,” Al Mezan added.

SA protests

South Africa has already completed stage one in the process of the downgrading of its embassy to Tel Aviv, and South African ambassador to Tel Aviv, Sisa Ngombane, is back in South Africa, said Minister of International Relations, Lindiwe Sisulu, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the South African Institute of International Affairs in Johannesburg, Sisulu went on to say: “Our liaison office in Tel Aviv will have no political mandate, no trade mandate and no development co-operation mandate. It will not be responsible for trade and commercial activities. The focus of the Liaison Office would be on consular and the facilitation of people-to-people relations.”

DIRCO’s decision to downgrade its embassy in Tel Aviv is in implementation of a resolution taken at the ANC’s 54th elective conference in December 2017, directing the South African government to “immediately and unconditionally downgrade the South African embassy in Israel to a liaison office.” The ANC called the resolution “a practical expression of support to the oppressed people of Palestine” and a means to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Palestine.

Palestinian Authority (PA) ambassador to South Africa, Hashem Dajani, welcomed the move. “South Africa represents the values of dignity, freedom and justice, and is fully aware of the importance of its pioneering role in international solidarity with the oppressed peoples of the world, especially the Palestinian people. This support will surely contribute to peace and security in our world,” Dajani said in an interview with the Afro-Palestine Newswire Service.

Hamas spokesperson, Basem Naim, hoped that the downgrading would eventually escalate to a complete boycott of Israel. “We thank South Africa for the steps it has taken to express its anger at the apartheid policy of the Israeli occupation state,” Naim told the Afro-Palestine Newswire Service.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement against Israel also welcomed Sisulu’s remarks.

Israel’s lobbyists, however, have warned that downgrading the embassy in Tel Aviv would harm South Africa economically.

According to Na’eem Jeenah of the Afro-Middle East Centre, cutting ties with Israel won’t hurt the country.

“Whether there are any trade implications from a downgrade will depend on how Israel responds. Even if Israel places obstacles to trade between the two countries, the effect will be insignificant. The trade volumes are not significant enough to be of great concern to South Africa. Israeli imports can easily be replaced with substitutes from elsewhere or by locally-developed technology. Israeli technology is not indispensable,” explained Jeenah.

Jeenah also dismissed claims that a downgrade will negatively affect South African Jews and Christians’ ability to travel to Palestine-Israel for religious reasons. “This is nonsensical. This fear can only be realized if Israel denies entry to Jews and Christians.”

According to Jeenah, Venezuela and Bolivia are useful examples. “Their Jewish populations continue to enjoy normal ties with Israel, and the Chavez government even secured Jewish religious sites in 2009, protecting the country’s Jewish population from protests against Israel’s 2008-2009 Gaza massacre.” This, Jeenah argues, is the kind of responsibility that the South African government should also adopt.

The Zionist Election Choices: Apartheid or Ethnic-Cleansing

The Israeli Election Choices: Apartheid or Ethnic-Cleansing

“Whether Netanyahu and his coalition with the fascist Jewish Power party — that openly advocates the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians — or Gantz, who prides himself on bombing Gaza back to the ‘Stone Ages,’ none of the major parties support a two-state solution or equality for Palestinians in a single state.”

Diana Buttu, Ramallah-based political analyst, former advisor to Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian negotiators, and Palestinian citizen of Israel:

“For Palestinians — whether citizens of Israel or living under undemocratic Israeli military rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip — these elections are the equivalent of a choice between Trump and Trump. Whether Netanyahu and his coalition with the fascist Jewish Power party — that openly advocates the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians — or Gantz, who prides himself on bombing Gaza back to the ‘Stone Ages,’ none of the major parties support a two-state solution or equality for Palestinians in a single state.

“Rather, this election will likely result in an even more extreme, right-wing extreme government than the last — which was the most right-wing in Israel’s history: an outcome that does not bode well for Palestinians, the region, or the world. This will happen irrespective of whether Netanyahu is elected or Gantz, as virtually none of the parties that will make it into the Knesset support Palestinian freedom or equality.”

Noura Erakat, Human rights attorney and Assistant Professor at George Mason University, former legal counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives and advocate for Palestinian refugee rights at the UN, and author of Justice for Some: Law and the Question of Palestine (2019):

“It is way past time for the international community to scrutinize Israel’s racial system of governance and nothing helps demonstrate that more than Israel’s elections. A broad swath of candidates are running on explicitly anti-Palestinian campaigns that mobilize voters by fomenting fear, declaring that Israel is a nation-state of “Jews alone’,” that promise to turn “Gaza into a parking lot,” and that depict violence against Palestinian lawmakers in Israel as a way to demonstrate fortitude.

“That is to say nothing of the nearly 5 million Palestinians excluded from voting who have lived under Israel’s military rule for over five decades. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are neither citizens of Israel nor sovereigns of their own state, because Israel covets Palestinian land and resources. Continuing to tout Israel as a democracy today is as laughable and dishonest as saying that Donald Trump is a centrist reformer aimed at achieving racial justice. It is high time we be honest about these basic facts.”

Rebecca Vilkomerson, Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace, a national organization inspired by Jewish tradition to work for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all the people of Israel and Palestine:

“The divide between Jewish American and Jewish Israeli values, as expressed through votes, has never been greater. Regardless of the outcome in the Israeli elections, the viable candidates and parties who could form a governing coalition range from right-wing to outright fascist. None support Palestinian statehood, rights, or equality.

“This election reinforces the need for pressure from outside Israel — including Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) — for any hope of significant changes in Israeli policies towards the Palestinian people or progress towards peace.”

6,000 Palestinian children jailed by Nazi Camp since 2015

Total number of Palestinians currently imprisoned by Nazi regime stands at 5,700, including 48 women and 250 children.

At least 6,000 Palestinian children have been detained by Nazi regime since 2015, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Association.

In a statement issued on Friday to mark Palestinian Children’s Day, the NGO said 98 percent of the children held had been subjected to psychological and/or physical abuse while in Nazi custody.

The association said dozens of minors were detained by Nazi regime after first being shot and wounded by Nazi Gestapo.

According to the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority’s Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs, the total number of Palestinians currently imprisoned by ‘Israel stands at 5,700, including 48 women and 250 children.

Children living in occupied East Jerusalem are the most targeted, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Association said in its statement, with dozens facing arrests more than one time a month, particularly during periods of heightened tensions such as the Bab al-Rahma protests in March.

Minors arrested during night raids are transferred to interrogation and detention centres, where they suffer abuses, including being deprived of food or water for hours, according to the association.

The children’s right to have one parent or guardian present during their interrogation is often neglected, the NGO said. Children are often forced to sign statements written in Hebrew – a language they cannot read.

The conditions have left released children suffering from nightmares, insomnia, decline in school achievement and reacting aggressively with their environment and society.

In its statement, the association urged international human rights organisations, including the United Nations’ children’s agency, to take “effective action against the violations committed against children who are detained by Israeli forces”.

USA: Professor Says ”Israel Is Almost Identical to ISIS”

Israel Is Almost Identical to ISIS, Columbia University Professor Says

‘Only difference’ is that ISIS does not have columnists ‘propagating the cause of the terrorist outfit as the Zionists columnists do on a regular basis,’ Hamid Dabashi writes

A Columbia University professor said on social media that the only difference between Israel and the Islamic State, is that Zionist columnists defend the Jewish state’s “terrorist cause.”

Hamid Dabashi, a professor in the university’s Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies, posted this on Facebook last week, sparking outcry among pro-Israel students.

The “murderous thugs” of the jihadist group “conquered parts of Syria and declared a ‘caliphate,’” Dabashi wrote. “Their ISRAELI counterparts meanwhile conquered parts of Syria and declared it part of their Zionist settler colony.”

He added: “The only difference: ISIS does not have a platoon of clean shaven and well coiffured [sic] columnists at the New York Times propagating the cause of the terrorist outfit as the Zionists columnists do on a regular basis.”

The university chapter of Students Supporting Israel wrote in a statement Thursday: “This kind of utterly despicable and repugnant statement is not to be expected from a tenured faculty holder in an Ivy League institution.” Fox News and other media reported that the university did not immediately reply to queries on Dabashi.

Furthermore, a candidate running for the National Union of Students’ executive committee in the United Kingdom also equated Israel to the Islamic States.

Zeid Truscott, a University of Bath student, shared an article five years ago alleging that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of Isis, was trained by the Mossad.

The Union of Jewish Students said it is “deeply troubled” by what is called anti-Semitic social media posts by Truscott.
