A US War Story

Dresden, Germany

By Larry Romanoff

Global Research,

Westerners are aware that the Americans fire-bombed the city of Dresden in Germany at the end of the Second World War, but most of the truth was suppressed as soon as it happened. Dresden was Eastern Germany’s cultural centre, a city filled with museums and historic buildings, historians unanimously agreeing that Dresden had no military value. What little industry it did have produced only cigarettes and china.

Neither Churchill nor Roosevelt were interested in ending the war or attacking military installations that still existed 100 Kms. outside of Dresden. At the time, the Russian army was advancing, and there is some truth to the story that the Americans wanted to show the Russians the awesome power of a truly advanced military force, to prevent Russia from harboring ambitions about Europe. It seems that both British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US President Roosevelt wanted what they called “a trump card”, a devastating “thunderclap of Anglo-American annihilation” with which to “impress” Stalin. But this could have been accomplished in many other ways and places. Dresden was not selected for this reason. There were two other prime motivations which will soon be apparent.

The fire-bombing of Dresden is one of many historical events that have been heavily sanitised by the victors, with casualty claims by so-called historians ranging as low as 25,000 or 30,000 when the likely tally was at least 30 times that number. Most cleansed versions of this holocaust tend to virtually ignore or deliberately underestimate the vast stream of refugees that had been flowing into Dresden for weeks; the most accurate estimates I have seen range upward from 500,000, this in addition to the regular population. Both Churchill and Roosevelt were fully aware of this huge and defenseless horde and, in their search for their “trump-card thunderclap”, were quoted as actively looking for “suggestions on how to blaze 600,000 refugees”. The Internet on this topic is very heavily sanitised.71st Anniversary of Dresden Fire Bombing: Allied War Crime Prelude to the Cold War

An important point historians have chosen to overlook is that the Americans and British fire-bombed not only Dresden but hundreds of smaller towns surrounding Dresden, many of which were so totally destroyed they were never rebuilt. The reason was genocidal, one small part of the overall intent to totally destroy Germany. With the utter destruction of these smaller towns, the population was being driven – herded like animals – into larger cities like Dresden where they could be annihilated in one massive single strike. The initial bombings encircled areas like Dresden, driving the people out of their towns and into the larger centers where they might find food and shelter and perhaps medical care. Often, the Allies bombed surrounding roads and railroads to prevent the escape of refugees in those directions, relentlessly herding them to the slaughter-houses. The plan was to exterminate as many Germans as possible. By the date of the bombing, the city was filled with increasing hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing other areas under attack.

Another item historians refuse to face is that Dresden was specifically selected for extermination not in spite of, but because of, its cultural value, to drive a stake into the heart of German cultural heritage and leave a wound that could never heal, by the permanent destruction of irreplaceable portions of the German soul, to open a wound in the German psyche that would never heal.

In successive waves of bombing with incendiaries, the Americans turned the entire city into one massive firestorm, killing perhaps a million civilians. With the high number of refugees, the real totals will never be known, but it was one of the worst single-event massacres of all time. As author Kurt Vonnegut wrote later,

“You guys burnt the place down, turned it into a single column of flame. More people died there in the firestorm, in that one big flame, than died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined”.

That evening in 1945 was “an orgy of genocide and barbarism against a defenseless German city, one of the greatest cultural centers of northern Europe”. More than 700,000 phosphorus bombs were dropped on 1.2 million people. One bomb for every 2 people. The temperature in the centre of the city reached 1800°C, melting the surfaces of the streets and instantly incinerating more than 500,000 women, children and the elderly.

The massive Allied bombers attacked Dresden repeatedly, and after completing their third wave, the US sent in P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft that strafed everything that moved. They flew along the Elbe River where the banks were loaded with still-arriving refugees, and killed almost all of them. They strafed columns of ambulances and rescue vehicles trying to evacuate survivors, they strafed hospitals and machine-gunned helpless patients. They machine-gunned all the animals in the Dresden zoo. Dresden truly was an orgy of death and destruction, but it was more. It was a celebration of evil. This was not part of a war; it was killing for the sake of killing, and for the enjoyment of it. After the war, Churchill was knighted for his success while the Americans celebrated their supremacy in civilian pacification, and yet others celebrated another chapter in the destruction of Germany.

Latin America: Is Canada Trying to Create Another “Illegitimate” Government?

By Nino Pagliccia

Global Research,

Bolivia has recently had a presidential election that without foreign interference would have passed without notice outside Latin America. President Evo Morales was re-elected democratically to a forth term without the need of a run-off election with incumbent Carlos Mesa, which shows his strength as the chosen candidate. However, nine days after the elections the Foreign Ministry of the Canadian government issues a statement expressing “concern” about “reports of serious election irregularities.”

We are used to expecting that kind of political position towards a popular left-leaning government from the US, which in fact has not recognised the Morales elections yet. But why is Canada so adamant in questioning the Bolivian election in the face of weak evidence of so-called irregularities?

To start, it is important to establish that US and Canada’s involvement in the region is very well coordinated. In 2017 Ottawa and Washington formed an association that “called on [the two governments] to take economic measures against Venezuela.” The focus on Venezuela should not hide the reality of the mandate, which is to produce a regime change wherever leftist governments are present, albeit Venezuela is at the top of the list. This is an association based on common ideology to be carried out with a division of tactical labour: Canada uses its “soft power” while the US hits with its brute financial force.

For instance, while the US government is punishing Venezuela with a severe economic and financial blockade, Canada’s “job” has been instrumental in subverting the progressive support base in the region to the extent of even breaking the strong Cuba-Venezuela friendship. Canada has become the self-appointed “leader” within the OAS, an organisation that gathers mostly Latin American and Caribbean countries; only Canada and the US are not from those geographical areas.

Under the direction of Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland from 2017, Canadian foreign policy seems to have taken an overt pro-corporation approach with a strong pro-neoliberal ideology. She came to that office from being Minister of International Trade where she would have heard many “complains” of lost business in Venezuela from Canadian mining corporations, which are nevertheless questioned in some cases.Hands Off Venezuela, Canada and US Go Home!

With that background and reputation she helped create the so-called Lima Group of a dozen mostly Latin American rightwing governments some of which have appalling records of human rights violations and of breaking the institutional order (Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Paraguay among others).

Therefore Canada is a willing partner of US sponsored Color Revolutions that are taking place in Latin America by omission or by commission.

While the ongoing recent unrest that we observe in EcuadorChile and Bolivia manifest the same sentiments of rebellion and indeed desire for regime change, not all Revolutions are created equal. Ecuador and Chile have rightwing conservative neoliberal governments, the kind that are supported by the Canadian regime, unlike Bolivia.

It is imperative to pay attention to the political alignment and interests of the major geopolitical players to be able to discern, more that the methods, the goal of the intended change. Canada, which has been called The Empire’s Shadowy Cousin, has decidedly engaged in delegitimising the Nicolas Maduro government in Venezuela because as we previously reported Canada is bound to gain a large “prize” in mining resources if it manages to oust Maduro.

In the case of Bolivia the main trade interest also seems to be in mining. In 2017 Canadian imports totaled $274.35 million (mainly in mineral ores, metals and precious stones and vegetables). But this has to be weighed vis-a-vis Bolivia’s claim on “Sovereignty over natural resources” as one of its pillars established in the Economic and Social Development Plan 2016-2020, which states,

“The strategic sectors of hydrocarbons and mining are the cornerstones of the Plurinational State of Bolivia economy as a result of the nationalization process and because of the role of the State in the administration of these strategic resources owned by the Bolivian people.”

To the ears of neoliberal politicians this must sound like outright socialism.

In conclusion, the claim of election “irregularities” may just be Canada’s public (readily unverifiable) excuse for more political interests. In fact, at the time of writing the OAS has accepted an invitation by the Morales government to audit the election results. If there should be any proven irregularity a second round of vote is proposed. The findings should be binding by both sides. However the political damage has already been done because the opposition has declared that will only accept a new election.

What has been a crass irregularity and interference is the public statement by the OAS Mission of election observers that overstepped its mandate by issuing “preliminary conclusions” calling for a second round before the vote count was completed.

It is important to recognise that Canadian involvement in the region has a dangerous and questionable implication as suggested by its actions in Bolivia’s elections.

The application of sanctions or public statements, propagating unwarranted false or misleading information with the sole intention of countering the resurgence of countries’ chosen socialist governments that are opposed to neoliberal austerity policies in Latin America, is a provocation against the sovereignty of those countries and their established social order. This is clearly the case towards Venezuela, and Canada is now attempting to include Bolivia by using similar language in casting “doubt over the legitimacy of the [electoral] results.”

Tulsi Gabbard Is Right, and Nancy Pelosi Wrong. It Was US Democrats Who Helped Cultivate the Barbarism of ISIS

By Jonathan Cook

Global Research,

There is something profoundly deceitful in the way the Democratic Party and the corporate media are framing Donald Trump’s decision to pull troops out of Syria.

One does not need to defend Trump’s actions or ignore the dangers posed to the Kurds, at least in the short-term, by the departure of US forces from northern Syria to understand that the coverage is being crafted in such a way as to entirely overlook the bigger picture.

The problem is neatly illustrated in this line from a report by the Guardian newspaper of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s meeting this week with Trump, who is described as having had a “meltdown”. Explaining why she and other senior Democrats stormed out, the paper writes that “it became clear the president had no plan to deal with a potential revival of Isis in the Middle East”.

Hang on a minute! Let’s pull back a little, and not pretend – as the media and Democratic party leadership wish us to – that the last 20 years did not actually happen. Many of us lived through those events. Our memories are not so short.

Islamic State, or Isis, didn’t emerge out of nowhere. It was entirely a creation of two decades of US interference in the Middle East. And I’m not even referring to the mountains of evidence that US officials backed their Saudi allies in directly funding and arming Isis – just as their predecessors in Washington, in their enthusiasm to oust the Soviets from the region, assisted the jihadists who went on to become al-Qaeda.

No, I’m talking about the fact that in destroying three key Arab states – Iraq, Libya and Syria – that refused to submit to the joint regional hegemony of Saudi Arabia and Israel, Washington’s local client states, the US created a giant void of governance at the heart of the Middle East. They knew that that void would be filled soon enough by religious extremists like Islamic State – and they didn’t care.

Overthrow, not regime change

You don’t have to be a Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi or Bashar Assad apologist to accept this point. You don’t even have to be concerned that these so-called “humanitarian” wars violated each state’s integrity and sovereignty, and are therefore defined in international law as “the supreme war crime”.

The bigger picture – the one no one appears to want us thinking about – is that the US intentionally sought to destroy these states with no obvious plan for the day after. As I explained in my book Israel and the Clash of Civilisations, these haven’t so much been regime-change wars as nation-state dismantling operations – what I have termed overthrow wars.

The logic was a horrifying hybrid of two schools of thought that meshed neatly in the psychopathic foreign policy goals embodied in the ideology of neoconservatism – the so-called “Washington consensus” since 9/11.

The first was Israel’s long-standing approach to the Palestinians. By constantly devastating any emerging Palestinian institution or social structures, Israel produced a divide-and-rule model on steroids, creating a leaderless, ravaged, enfeebled society that sucked out all the local population’s energy. That strategy proved very appealing to the neoconservatives, who saw it as one they could export to non-compliant states in the region.

The second was the Chicago school’s Shock Doctrine, as explained in Naomi Klein’s book of that name. The chaotic campaign of destruction, the psychological trauma and the sense of dislocation created by these overthrow wars were supposed to engender a far more malleable population that would be ripe for a US-controlled “colour revolution”.

The recalcitrant states would be made an example of, broken apart, asset-stripped of their resources and eventually remade as new dependent markets for US goods. That was what George W Bush, Dick Cheney and Halliburton really meant when they talked about building a New Middle East and exporting democracy.

Even judged by the vile aims of its proponents, the Shock Doctrine has been a half-century story of dismal economic failure everywhere it has been attempted – from Pinochet’s Chile to Yeltsin’s Russia. But let us not credit the architects of this policy with any kind of acumen for learning from past errors. As Bush’s senior adviser Karl Rove explained to a journalist whom he rebuked for being part of the “reality-based community”: “We’re an empire now and, when we act, we create our own reality.”US to Set Up 30,000-strong “Border Force” in Syria

The birth of Islamic State

The barely veiled aim of the attacks on Iraq, Libya and Syria was to destroy the institutions and structures that held these societies together, however imperfectly. Though no one likes to mention it nowadays, these states – deeply authoritarian though they were – were also secular, and had well-developed welfare states that ensured high rates of literacy and some of the region’s finest public health services.

One can argue about the initial causes of the uprising against Assad that erupted in Syria in 2011. Did it start as a popular struggle for liberation from the Assad government’s authoritarianism? Or was it a sectarian insurgency by those who wished to replace Shia minority rule with Sunni majority rule? Or was it driven by something else: as a largely economic protest by an under-class suffering from food shortages as climate change led to repeated crop failures? Or are all these factors relevant to some degree?

Given how closed a society Syria was and is, and how difficult it therefore is to weigh the evidence in ways that are likely to prove convincing to those not already persuaded, let us set that issue aside too. Anyway, it is irrelevant to the bigger picture I want to address.

The indisputable fact is that Washington and its Gulf allies wished to exploit this initial unrest as an opportunity to create a void in Syria – just as they had earlier done in Iraq, where there were no uprisings, nor even the WMDs the US promised would be found and that served as the pretext for Bush’s campaign of Shock and Awe.

The limited uprisings in Syria quickly turned into a much larger and far more vicious war because the Gulf states, with US backing, flooded the country with proxy fighters and arms in an effort to overthrow Assad and thereby weaken Iranian and Shia influence in the region. The events in Syria and earlier in Iraq gradually transformed the Sunni religious extremists of al-Qaeda into the even more barbaric, more nihilistic extremists of Islamic State.

A dark US vanity project

After Rove and Cheney had their fill playing around with reality, nature got on with honouring the maxim that it always abhors a vacuum. Islamic State filled the vacuum Washington’s policy had engineered.

The clue, after all, was in the name. With the US and Gulf states using oil money to wage a proxy war against Assad, Isis saw its chance to establish a state inspired by a variety of Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabist dogma. Isis needed territory for their planned state, and the Saudis and US obliged by destroying Syria.

This barbarian army, one that murdered other religious groups as infidels and killed fellow Sunnis who refused to bow before their absolute rule, became the west’s chief allies in Syria. Directly and covertly, we gave them money and weapons to begin building their state on parts of Syria.

Again, let us ignore the fact that the US, in helping to destroy a sovereign nation, committed the supreme war crime, one that in a rightly ordered world would ensure every senior Washington official faces their own Nuremberg Trial. Let us ignore too for the moment that the US, consciously through its actions, brought to life a monster that sowed death and destruction everywhere it went.

The fact is that at the moment Assad called in Russia to help him survive, the battle the US and the Gulf states were waging through Islamic State and other proxies was lost. It was only a matter of time before Assad would reassert his rule.

From that point onwards, every single person who was killed and every single Syrian made homeless – and there were hundreds of thousands of them – suffered their terrible fate for no possible gain in US policy goals. A vastly destructive overthrow war became instead something darker still: a neoconservative vanity project that ravaged countless Syrian lives.

A giant red herring

Trump now appears to be ending part of that policy. He may be doing so for the wrong reasons. But very belatedly – and possibly only temporarily – he is seeking to close a small chapter in a horrifying story of western-sponsored barbarism in the Middle East, one intimately tied to Islamic State.

What of the supposed concerns of Pelosi and the Democratic Party under whose watch the barbarism in Syria took place. They should have no credibility on the matter to begin with.

But their claims that Trump has “no plan to deal with a potential revival of Isis in the Middle East” is a giant red herring they are viciously slapping us in the face with in the hope the spray of seawater blinds us.

First, Washington sowed the seeds of Islamic State by engineering a vacuum in Syria that Isis – or something very like it – was inevitably going to fill. Then, it allowed those seeds to flourish by assisting its Gulf allies in showering fighters in Syria with money and arms that came with only one string attached – a commitment to Sunni jihadist ideology inspired by Saudi Wahhabism.

Isis was made in Washington as much as it was in Riyadh. For that reason, the only certain strategy for preventing the revival of Islamic State is preventing the US and the Gulf states from interfering in Syria again.

With the Syrian army in charge of Syrian territory, there will be no vacuum for Isis to fill. The jihadists’ state-building project is now unrealisable, at least in Syria. Islamic State will continue to wither, as it would have done years before if the US and its Gulf allies had not fuelled it in a proxy war they knew could not be won.

Doomed Great Game

The same lesson can be drawn by looking at the experience of the Syrian Kurds. The Rojava fiefdom they managed to carve out in northern Syria during the war survived till now only because of continuing US military support. With a US departure, and the Kurds too weak to maintain their improvised statelet, a vacuum was again created that this time has risked sucking in the Turkish army, which fears a base for Kurdish nationalism on its doorstep.

The Syrian Kurds’ predicament is simple: face a takeover by Turkey or seek Assad’s protection to foil Turkish ambitions. The best hope for the Kurds looks to be the Syrian army’s return, filling the vacuum and regaining a chance of long-term stability.

That could have been the case for all of Syria many tens of thousands of deaths ago. Whatever the corporate media suggest, those deaths were lost not in a failed heroic battle for freedom, which, even if it was an early aspiration for some fighters, quickly became a goal that was impossible for them to realise. No, those deaths were entirely pointless. They were sacrificed by a western military-industrial complex in a US-Saudi Great Game that dragged on for many years after everyone knew it was doomed.

Nancy Pelosi’s purported worries about Isis reviving because of Trump’s Syria withdrawal are simply crocodile fears. If she is really so worried about Islamic State, then why did she and other senior Democrats stand silently by as the US under Barack Obama spent years spawning, cultivating and financing Isis to destroy Syria, a state that was best placed to serve as a bulwark against the head-chopping extremists?

Pelosi and the Democratic leadership’s bad faith – and that of the corporate media – are revealed in their ongoing efforts to silence and smear Tulsi Gabbard, the party’s only candidate for the presidential nomination who has pointed out the harsh political realities in Syria, and tried to expose their years of lies.

Pelosi and most of the Democratic leadership don’t care about Syria, or its population’s welfare. They don’t care about Assad, or Isis. They care only about the maintenance and expansion of American power – and the personal wealth and influence it continues to bestow on them.

Amjad al-Deek and his companions snatched with spoons “7 months of freedom”

By: Sammi Ibrahem,Sr

Illegally Nazi occupied Ramallah: “Riyad” handed the spoon to “Amjad”, “Your turn came, the soil here help, they strengthened the resolve,” a light blow here on the side, collapsing sand, collected by “Khaled” in a bag and hide under “sprinklers”, There are soldiers hovering nearby and watching each ant.

Time in Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah, was slow, while the three young men, seconds, and night and day, were digging a 15-meter-long “spoon” tunnel, which he managed to take from the “prisoners’ tents” to the “gated freedom gate”. “.

It was one of the prison’s adventures that the liberated prisoner Amjad al-Deek and his two companions, Riyad Khalifa and Khaled Shaath, lived before they died, to escape the prison hell and the torture of the interrogation, which is still experienced by 5,000 Palestinian prisoners in prison.

Amjad rejects “all that”

The battle began when Amjad was arrested in his third year at a checkpoint separating his hometown of Kafr Neama from Ramallah in 2001. He was subjected to a harsh investigation that lasted 65 days. , And food more than lousy, in addition to psychological torture more than physical, humiliation and deprivation, and a threat to the family. “

The beginning of the arrest was a shock for the 20-year-old, and a new transition from university life, gardens and libraries, to “cells, family rooms and courtyards on time,” in which the overall shape of his life changed, but one thing remained within him, “to reject it all.”

Despite the suffering of the families and hardships, but they shared sweet and bitter situations, it was the most difficult – as described by Amjad – when one of the prisoners is sick and you feel unable to help him, and prisoners lost loved ones, one of them lost his mother, and I hit my head in the door, oppression and oppression, nothing We do before death and oppression !, recalls Amjad.

“Laughter is the partner of tears, this is life,” Amjad put it, and so far whenever he remembers the situation of the “Ghazzawi pepper” he laughed as if it was the first time of the event. This is one of the prisoners who challenged the prisoner Alaa Abu Adi from Ramallah, to eat five centuries of pepper : “I give you 200 shekels if you eat them and see some”, before the challenge, but with the last bite, lying on the ground as he screamed, and the prisoners burst laughed: “Mesh may pepper Why Tkloh?!, Siboh Ghazazp.”

The inverted, which one of the prisoners tried to invent the movement “Falhwa” in her heart, lifted it on his head, but turned on him and scattered rice around him, and the reaction of the prisoners sarcastic him: “Stay like what you, Benji eat about your head.”

“We have to get out of Han.”

Good company was not absent from the councils of prisoners, even collected by the tent of his prison “Riad Khalifa” from Ramallah, and with them, “Khaled Shaath” from Bethlehem, and spoke out the “secret idea” in the mind of each of them, and the minds of everyone who passes on this place They said it together: “We need to get out of Han.”

As a meeting of the summit, they discussed, the advice of the mind, and more possibilities, Amjad recalls: “Perhaps it is impossible, there are no tools to help in implementation, and the eyes of the watch all the time, in addition to the morning queue and the sudden counting of their father, and all we have, spoons and a tool “We have our will too.”

“When we are frustrated and tell the story is difficult, we remember that it is a harder detector than we are in, and not harshest from prison and its circumstances,” Amjad said. Every second with salvation from this reality, even if it is impossible and insane. “

On one April day, they began to execute, and with every “spoon” stroke in the ground, the hope was enlarged in the heart. It passed like this.

On May 12, 2003, Riad walked in front, passing the first and last tunnel in their lives, examining the road from beginning to end, and how long it took to walk 15 meters back and forth. “.

“The tunnel was less than a meter wide and less than 30 centimeters high, with a narrow end at the end, deliberately, because the pits would pass under the outer wall of the prison. The somewhat slender bodily structure, to crawl in succession through it, to the end of it just above the prison wall.

“We were very tired to get out, but we forgot ourselves when we took one breath out of jail. We made our first victory, the happiest moment in my life at all. The shock is now backwards. .

At the same moment, Amjad recalls the questions in his mind: “O God, it is reasonable that we are righteous?” The world turned over in just seconds! “.

7 months of freedom

“We walked a good distance without being revealed. The prison administration knew the next morning and during the queue and counting that we ran away, that is, hours after our success in getting out of the prison, we had reached the mountains of Ramallah, where the country we know and possess,” Amjad tells us. .

The adventure did not end just by escaping from prison.

Everyone is chased now, and even their families are monitored. Not completed before arrest.

Silence for a moment and continue: “Khaled separated from us, somewhere else after 3 days, but he was arrested on the sixth day of our common freedom, and we stayed, Riyadh and his wife Fatima, and no one in the world except us, we live months in the mountains, where the pleasure I did not feel before, Azza It is accompanied by pride, a great sense that we have taught ‘Israel’, the army is bloated, and the drone planes on us.

On the night of December 12, Nazi occupying forces besieged Riyad’s house. An armed clash erupted until the last bullet that was announced after their discovery near the village of Kafr Na’ma. He was known as the commander of the Jerusalem Brigades in the Ramallah area. Then.

And ended their temporary freedom, shortly after, re-arrest “Amjad” tens of meters from the battle, and after seven months snatched from his jailer, to live a bright age in freedom, and see “the richest experience in his life.”

His red card

Returning to prison was the last thing Amjad wanted, saying “one of the most severe human being, is the investigation after the escape, the occupation officers compete in pressure, punishment and torture, and all the questions were then how you managed to escape ?! How did it ?, amid screaming from the interrogators who almost lose Their minds without answers. “

Even 10 days after the end of the investigation, and the reunion of Amjad Khaled, in prison again, they could not accommodate the loss, and the separation of “Riad” them, shouting voice: “I absorbed everything, even back to prison, but what I imagined his separation, we were only moment by moment, 24 hours with some, not able to absorb a reasonable martyrdom?

He was given a red card – of varying degrees of severity – that was identified in all prisons as a very dangerous person, especially for anyone who tried to escape or carried out an escape, and carried by about 100 Palestinian prisoners accused of trying to escape, including prisoners accused of digging a tunnel down Toilet in Gilboa military prison in northern Palestine occupied in 2014.

Amjad recounts that the red card made him a “unusual” prisoner, where he is placed on the front of his file when moving from one prison to another, to warn of his danger, and it also includes continuous transfers so that he does not remain in one prison for more than a year, and less than 6 months in the section , And sporadic isolation and intermediate procedures are individual, chained restriction at the time of the visit, more thorough inspection of his room and his bed almost every week. “

Amjad was sent back to the previous sentence, in addition to the penalty of escape, with a total of “16 years” of detention, and red card actions throughout the period, he tightens his nerve: “Despite exhaustion and hardship, it was a challenge and arrogance.”

He did not allow despair to permeate in his soul, healthy eating was his lifestyle, without smoking and no harmful carbonated drinks, and without canned, with the continuation of sports and maintain personal hygiene, in addition to his mental and psychological health, as he was a permanent reading, and has obtained a degree in history Middle East from al-Aqsa University in Gaza, during his imprisonment.

“Shortly before the release date, I began to have wishes and dreams. Amjad said, “Deliberate kill our joy.”

Today, 16 years after the escape, Amjad al-Deek sniffs the breeze of freedom in Ramallah, but his mind is full of memories for the comrades of families and their attitudes. , Who left him before his first arrest, echoing his famous sentence: “The night is fleeting,” and “Life is a battle.”

Amos Oz and the real ‘Israel’

Amoz Oz
By Lawrence Davidson

On 29 December theNew York Times (NYT) reported the death of the charismatic Israeli writer Amos Oz. Born in Jerusalem in 1939, Oz was altogether Israeli. That is, he did not come to Palestine from somewhere else. Only nine years old when Israel came into being, Oz knew no other nationality.

Nor did he really know his Palestinian neighbours. His view of them was typical of the Western view of his time: that their political and social potential did not go beyond what could be found in the stereotypical “Arab state”. That stereotype had only negative connotations for Oz, and this was the reason he denied the possibility of a one-state solution wherein Palestinians and Israeli Jews lived together in relative harmony. He claimed that “there could never be a binational state but only an Arab state with a Jewish minority”and he, Amos Oz, did not want to live in an “Arab state”. That meant he could never believe in, or struggle for, a truly democratic multi-ethnic and multi-religious Israel. His was a dualistic world – the two-state solution was Oz’s solution.

It is important to understand that his support for two states made Oz a “moderate” among Zionists and consigned him to the political margins of Israeli politics. Mainstream Israeli politics could not abide his assertion that a real peace required that the Palestinians have their own separate “Arab state” in the West Bank and Gaza, alongside Zionist Israel. Likewise, the support for a two-state solution automatically set him against the maximalist formula – a Zionist state from the Mediterranean to the Jordan River – propounded by a hardline conservative element of the Zionist movement. The position of this element has become the political standard for an increasing number of Israeli Jewish citizens.

Oz’s opposition to the maximalist Zionist position made him ipso facto a serious opponent of the Israeli occupation. The occupation, insatiably expansive as it has proven to be, was the death knell of the two-state dream, and Oz despised the Israeli politicians who refused to make the necessary compromises for such a peace. He thought of them as “cowards” and they thought of him as a “traitor”.

Oz “felt himself a man possessed of moral clarity but denigrated for it in a country that could not make the difficult decisions he felt necessary”. Nonetheless, he remained a patriot. He confessed: “I love Israel even when I cannot stand it.”

Redefining the Israeli character

The NYT piece also tells us that Amos Oz’s ambition was to define, or more accurately, redefine, the Israeli character. The effort was an expression of his idealism which, despite all evidence to the contrary, told him that the present state of Zionist Israel could be reversed and humanised – made more benign through an underpinning of what he called “humanistic Jewish culture”. This was perhaps a politicised version of the pre-1948 phenomenon of apolitical cultural Zionism. This optimistic yet naive outlook made the Haaretz editorial writer Gideon Levy refer to Amos Oz as “the last moral Zionist”.

The vehicle for this transformation was his idealised two-state solution. His dedication to it essentially blinded him to the real nature of his nation’s character – one of longstanding imperialism combined with racism. In contrast, someone like Binyamin Netanyahu grasped this aspect of Israeli consciousness almost instinctively. Oz’s rejection of these character flaws increasingly separated him from the most of his fellow Israeli Jews. Thus, to the extent that Oz was an “insistent advocate for peace with the Palestinians”, the number of Israelis listening to him had dwindled. The fact of this marginalisation caused his emotionally driven relationship with his country to vacillate between hope and despair.

QQ”…today’s Israel has a lot in common with the US state of Alabama, circa 1930. That is why contemporary white supremacists in the United States such as Robert Spencer claim an affinity with Israel and Zionist ideological goals.”QQ

In his literary work Oz sometimes suggested there is a conflict embedded in the nationalist consciousness about what Zionism really stands for. Well, once again, there is no doubt a conflict exists in the minds of Israelis such as Oz. But it is a conflict that has set them apart from their fellow Zionists. For the majority the need for discriminatory laws and racist practices is clear enough. That is what an exclusive ethnic/religious state requires. In practice it has produced an Israel now approaching apartheid status. American readers of this essay can think of it this way: today’s Israel has a lot in common with the US state of Alabama, circa 1930. That is why contemporary white supremacists in the United States such as Robert Spencer claim an affinity with Israel and Zionist ideological goals.

Did Amos Oz understand that this was Zionism’s inevitable outcome? If he did, he tried hard to rationalise that awareness away.

In truth, there is every reason to believe that the two-state solution Oz supported would result in the same sort of racist Israel we see today, just in a smaller territory. What then would Oz have done? Well, if a Jewish majority could have been guaranteed in, say an Israel confined to land west of the Green Line, he would no doubt have felt secure enough to advocate for human and civil rights for all its citizens. In the end, however, that advocacy would have most likely led him onto the margins of that smaller hypothetical Israel, just as his demand for two separate states has done in the contemporary larger one.

Oz’s hope for Israel, and not his alone, always rested on the assumption that a humane Zionist state was possible. The reality is that it is not possible. Any state designed first and foremost for one ethnically- and/or religiously-defined group, and also having in its midst a sizable minority, must inevitably become discriminatory in its laws and practices. In the case of Israel, this fact is reinforced by a Zionist ideology that demands such an exclusive state if Jews are to be “safe”. This too is an illusion, for there are fewer places in today’s world less safe for Jews than Israel.

As a writer, Amos Oz will long be remembered as a master craftsman of the Hebrew language – a producer of very good reads. As an advocate of a two-state solution, he was ignored by the majority of his own people. As a moralist, his programme was belied by the realities of a Zionist movement that had long ago turned its back on the values Oz held dear. Thus, in the end, Amos Oz was a great writer, and perhaps also a good man, born and bred to a bad system he could not bring himself to abandon.

Exploiting the ignorant: Singer-actress Demi Lovato’s “pilgrimage” to Apartheid ‘Israel’

Bible-hugging Demi Lovato
By Lawrence Davidson

Demi Lovato gets baptised

In the 4 October 2019 issue of Rolling Stone magazine it was reported that the 27-year-old “pop, pop-rock, and R&B” singer-actress Demi Lovato had made a trip to Israel in order to, among other things, be baptised in the Jordan River. Here is how she described it:

When I was offered an amazing opportunity to visit the places I’d read about in the Bible growing up, I said yes… Spirituality is so important to me… to be baptised in the Jordan River – the same place Jesus was baptised – I’ve never felt more renewed in my life.

The trip drew attention because it was financed by anonymous donors, reportedly in the amount of $150,000, and required her to allow posted reports of her experiences. Among those reports were these statements: “There is something absolutely magical about Israel” and “This trip has been so important for my well-being, my heart, and my soul. I’m grateful for the memories made and the opportunity to be able to fill the God-sized hole in my heart. Thank you for having me, Israel.”

There quickly followed a backlash from those who saw her trip as an endorsement of the state of Israel despite its apartheid nature. The criticism upset Lovato, and so, on an Instagram post, she tried to set things straight:

No one told me there would be anything wrong with going or that I could possibly be offending anyone, with that being said, I’m sorry if I hurt or offended anyone, that was not my intention… This was meant to be a spiritual experience for me NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT and now I realise it hurt people and for that I’m sorry.

This Instagram apology was deleted soon after posting – perhaps because it offended the anonymous parties that paid for her trip.

If you look at the rather sparse coverage of this incident, both here in the US and in Israel, you will notice that the main question being considered by the media is, who sponsored Lovato’s trip? Was it the Israeli Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs, some Christian Zionist outfit, or a combination of both? Actually, I don’t think it matters much. We know that the Israeli government is trying to break the worldwide boycott (BDS) by luring celebrities to visit the country. It is no doubt assisted in this effort by all manner of Zionist organisations, including the Christian Zionists. Putting aside the question of who paid for the trip, there is a much more interesting aspect of this affair: Lovato’s striking ignorance.

Public knowledge

The struggle between Zionists and Palestinians has been going on for over 100 years, counting from the Balfour Declaration of 1917. The Zionist ideology which underlay the drive for a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine inevitably drew resistance from the Arab population – both Muslim and Christian – that had been resident there for thousands of years. And that resistance was met by a typically violent response from the European Zionist invaders pouring into the area under the protection of the British imperium. That violent response was one that had been honed by centuries of European imperialism operating worldwide. It involved a deeply racist disdain for the “natives”, the use of military forces to suppress and oppress, and the strict separation of the European colonisers and the indigenous population. When the British finally left Palestine in 1948, the Israeli settler-state maintained traditional imperialist practices. It has never stopped. That makes Israel a functioning colonial state founded and maintained in the spirit of 19th century imperialism.

Today there are 7.2 million Palestinian refugees worldwide. Millions live in “59 refugee camps throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon”. The Gaza Strip, which is 140 square miles (363 square kilometres), is crammed with 1.8 million mostly displaced Palestinians held hostage to an Israeli blockade. Gaza is often referred to as the world’s largest open-air prison.

All of this, the history of Palestine and Israel, and the ongoing present situation, is public knowledge. For instance, here is a sample of stories to make recent headlines: In Israel racism is not just the right, it is the state (Haaretz, 26 September 2019); Israeli doctors and torture (972 Magazine, 7 October 2019); Israeli army raids Palestinian NGO in an attack on human rights (Amnesty International, 19 September 2019); Is Israel an “apartheid” state? This UN report says yes (Washington Post, 16 March 2017). And, let’s throw in this final piece just for its scientific shock value: Israeli teachers discouraged from teaching evolution (124 News, 30 August 2019).

This listing is but a proverbial drop in the bucket. In any given week there are tens of similar pieces appearing all over the world. Notice that most of the above sources are Israeli (Haaretz, 124 News, 972 magazine). Thus, even if all your information, left to right, comes from Israeli sources, you can’t help knowing that, to paraphrase a line from Hamlet, “something is rotten in the state of Israel”. Yet, apparently, Demi Lovato did not know: “No one told me there would be anything wrong with going or that I could possibly be offending anyone.” If we believe her, and I am inclined to do so, how can we explain such ignorance? It turns out that explaining it is not that hard.

A natural attention zone

Most people pay attention to what immediately concerns them, both as relates to place and time. It is a logical and age-old orientation that no doubt evolved because it can provide immediate survival value. I call this phenomenon a natural attention zone, or, if you will, natural localism. In terms of territory, it translates into a familiarity with about 30 square miles around the place you live, work, study, and so forth . In the modern era, one can also virtually import points of particular personal interest into this attention zone from further away. For instance, American Zionists do this virtual import when it comes to Palestine/Israel. So do Palestinian Americans. However, if you have no reason to pay attention to a place, or you only pay attention to it in a highly selective way, you will not bother with seemingly superfluous information. You will just ignore it.

Millions of people go to Israel as tourists every year, and over half are religious Christians… Engrossed as they are in their Bible-centred attention zone, they never realise that their “renewing” pilgrimage legitimises, and financially subsidises, an apartheid state.

Given her spirituality, Demi Lovato seems to have imported Bible stories into her attention zone – or at least did so as a child – and this helped shape her consciousness. But it never seems to have gone beyond Sunday school piety, and even this was overtaken as she aged by the demands of a successful singing and acting career. Then came a seductive offer. When given the chance to travel to “the places I’d read about in the Bible” Lovato apparently became aware of that “God-sized hole in my heart” and, so to speak, hopped on the airplane no questions asked. She was no doubt too excited to recognise that her spiritual adventure warranted further investigation – that, in fact, someone was using her yearning for renewed spirituality for their own political/ideological purposes. She is not alone in this regard.

Millions of people go to Israel as tourists every year, and over half are religious Christians looking for the same “spiritual renewal” as Demi Lovato. They do so single-mindedly in a fashion that blinds most of them to the racist tragedy unfolding around them. Engrossed as they are in their Bible-centred attention zone, they never realise that their “renewing” pilgrimage legitimises, and financially subsidises, an apartheid state.

You might ask, with millions of devout Christians going yearly to Israel, why the seductive offer to Demi Lovato? One can only assume that her celebrity status was seen as a useful vehicle to push back the international boycott of Israel movement – and a further lure to her large fan base to follow her example.

Early in my tenure-track residency at West Chester University, my office computer was hacked by some anonymous Zionist source waging cyberwar against the free speech of those supporting the Palestinians. The way they did this was by rerouting several of my opinion pieces to literally thousands of random email addresses. I called in the university IT folks and got the problem fixed within a few days.

In the interim, it was a pretty interesting experience. On the one hand, it was potentially free advertising for my point of view – the hackers seemed not to have grasped this potential. On the other, it taught me the probability was high that the random recipients would see this as an annoying intrusion into their attention zone, where the Palestinian-Israeli struggle was seen as irrelevant. A common reply was, “Please stop sending me these emails. I don’t know anything about this and I don’t care.”

And there we have it. Ignorance beyond one’s figurative 30 square miles is the default position. That opens most of us to all kinds of manipulation. Throw in an obsession with Bible stories and, as regards to Palestine/Israel, one’s vulnerability goes up. The alleged ancient “holiness” of the place neutralises all of present Israel’s ongoing sins. Thus, ignorance in general, and ignorance of the Palestinian situation in particular, can be exploited to the benefit of racism and oppression. Demi Lovato is a recent example of this fact. When it comes to “Christian tourism,” let the buyer beware.

After the victory of Kaadan .. Four prisoners continue the battle of empty intestine

By:Sammi Ibrahem,Sr

Illegally Nazi occupied West Bank : Four prisoners are still fighting the empty intestines until they meet their just demand for a cap on open administrative detention, after the captive Tareq Qa’dan suspended his 89-day strike.

PCHR’s spokesman, Riad Al-Ashqar, said that 46-year-old prisoner Tareq Hussein Qadan from Arraba, southwest of Jenin, achieved a new victory in the battle of the empty intestine after his health reached a maximum level of seriousness.

The “Ashqar” that the prisoner “Qaadan” suspended his strike after the occupation forced to set a ceiling for his administrative detention, and issue a substantial decision against him, stipulating not to renew him again after the end of the last extension for four months, and thus released on 8/2/2020 .

Al-Ashqar pointed out that four prisoners are still in the battle of the empty bowel despite the danger to their lives. A total of seven years in Nazi camp, he was re-arrested last January.

The prisoner “Ali” in the hospital “Ramla”, and suffers from a sharp drop in heart rate of up to 25%, and weakness in the heart muscle, and complains of severe and persistent pain throughout his body, and can not move his hands and feet, and uses a wheelchair to move He had a severe headache and lost 26 kg.

Mosab Tawfiq al-Hindi, 29, from Tal village in Nablus, has been on hunger strike for 34 days after he was issued an administrative order against him. The occupation, mostly under administrative detention, was transferred two days ago to Ramla prison hospital after his deteriorating health.

The detained prisoner, Ahmad Omar Zahran, 42, from Deir Abu Mash’al village, west of Ramallah, has been in detention for 30 days. He was recently transferred to Ramle Prison Hospital after his health deteriorated.

Zahran, a former prisoner who had spent 15 years in Israeli jails on several arrests, was re-arrested last March and was given an administrative decision. When he was renewed for a second time, he went on a 38-day hunger strike and suspended him after reaching an agreement to release him in October. The occupation did not keep his promises and renewed his administrative for a third time, which prompted him to go on strike for the second time during this arrest.

Al-Ashqar pointed out that the prisoner, who holds Jordanian nationality, Heba Ahmad Al-Labadi, 24, has been on hunger strike for 34 days after the occupation refused to cancel the administrative detention order issued for five months after her arrest last August at the Karama crossing. She was evacuated to Kaplan hospital two days ago after being in a state of deterioration. She was sent back to Jalameh prison again.

The Palestinian Prisoners Center held the Israeli authorities fully responsible for the life and safety of the striking prisoners.

Interference by Unnamed “Foreign Powers” in Canada’s Elections? The Invasion of “America’s Backyard”

This article addresses the alleged interference of unnamed “foreign powers” as well as the historical process of US interference, including an outright secret US Military Invasion of Canada formulated in the 1930s.***“In 1934, War Plan Red was amended to authorize the immediate first use of poison gas against Canadians and to use strategic bombing to destroy Halifax if it could not be captured.  …  “In August 1935, the US held its largest peacetime military manoeuvres in history, with 36,000 troops converging at the Canadian border south of Ottawa, and another 15,000 held in reserve in Pennsylvania. (February 11-13, 1935, hearings of the Committee on Military Affairs, House of Representatives, on Air Defense Bases (H.R. 6621 and H.R. 4130. This testimony was to have been secret but was published by mistake. See the New York Times, May 1, 1935, p. 1.Scroll down for details***Are the Russians coming to disrupt our elections scheduled for October 21st? Back in July, Canada’s Minister of Democratic Institutions Karina Gould  intimated that Canada’s 2019 elections could be the target of interference by foreign powers. While Ottawa did not explicitly point its finger at the Kremlin, the official statement and media reports intimated that it could be Russia (and possibly China) because Vladimir Putin had allegedly interfered in favor of Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential elections.  And apparently Moscow had also intervened in the French elections. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the RCMP were said to be “monitoring foreign threat activity in Canada and around the world”.“At this time, we haven’t seen direct threats to the 2019 general election,” the official said.CSIS continues to observe hostile foreign actors “taking steps to position themselves to clandestinely influence, promote or discredit certain messages, candidates or groups during the campaign,” the official added. (CBC, July 09, 2019)

Three months prior to the October 2019 Elections,  the Trudeau government issued a “Cabinet Directive on the Critical Election Incident Public Protocol” (CEIPP) to “protect Canada’s Democratic Institutions”  against unnamed foreign powers
.The Cabinet Directive on the Critical Election Incident Public Protocol sets out the ministers’ expectations with respect to the general directions and the principles to guide the process for informing the public during the writ period of an incident that threatens Canada’s ability to have a free and fair election. Consult the document hereIn the event of a threat by a foreign power to disrupt the election, a top level national security panel “will inform the prime minister”,  (see Global News, July 9, 2019)Russia Dirty Tricks? With some exceptions, Canada’s media has remained silent on the matter. According to a recent “authoritative”  CTV  report  the Kremlin is once again up to “Dirty Tricks”, intent upon manipulating Canada’s elections. Which party are they going to support? In an attempt to stop foreign interference during the 2019 Canadian federal election, Canada’s top security agencies are monitoring the web 24/7. Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), works hand in hand with a largely secret organization, Communication Security Establishment (CSE), …….  Former Russian troll Vitaly Bespalov thinks the Russians have already come up with new ways to meddle with our political views. After being implicated for interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, they have to be more creative as Canadians get ready to go to the polls.“So now I think they are going to invent some other schemes of influencing the audience. It will be done in a different way. No need to look for trolls on Facebook, they will find a new way.”Intervention of an Unnamed Foreign Power: The United States of AmericaThere is ample of evidence of foreign interference by an “unnamed foreign power”, which has barely been mentioned in the course of the election campaign. In Canada’s history, as well as during the mandate of the Justin Trudeau’s government, the United States of America has intervened in what is euphemistically called  “America’s Backyard”, i.e. a nation state inside America’s sphere of influence. And I am not referring to former president Obama’s recent statement in support for Justin Trudeau. Washington is on record of having interfered in elections  in 45 countries according to political scientist Dov H. Levin of Carnegie Mellon University.  While Canada is not mentioned in Don H Levin’s study, the history of US interference in Canada’s internal affairs goes far beyond the process of meddling in Canadian elections.Canadian farmers are acutely aware of how the Trump administration in 2017 imposed without real negotiation, a complete overhaul of trade and investment relations leading to the formation of the so-call United States, Mexico, Canada USMCA trade agreement which is intended to replace NAFTA.Politicians in the Trudeau government were coopted. The economic impacts of this agreement on Canada’s economy are potentially devastating. But there is much more in our history which has a direct bearing on national sovereignty and democracy in Canada.Flashback to 1930…America’s Plan to Invade CanadaWhile the US plan to Annex Canada in 1866 (a de facto act of war formulated as a Bill by the US Congress) is on record, most Canadians are unaware that the US in the late 1920s had formulated a detailed plan to invade Canada, entitled “Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan — Red”. The plan was approved by the US War Department under the presidency of Herbert Hoover in 1930.It was updated in 1934 and 1935 during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was withdrawn in 1939 following the outbreak of the Second World War. (The full text of the 1935 Invasion Plan is in Annex)This insidious military agenda which was intent on ultimately annexing Canada to the US as well as disabling the British Empire, involved the planned bombings of four major cities: Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax. And guess who was assigned to oversee these bombings: General Douglas MacArthur (image left, 1940s), who was US Army chief of staff (1930-37). MacArthur’s mandate coincided with  the release of the 1930 and 1935 invasion plan of Canada. As we recall MacArthur was subsequently put in charge of leading the bombing raids against Japan during World War II. (See Floyd Rudman)The 1935 plan to invade Canada consisted of a 94-page document “with the word SECRET stamped on the cover.” It had been formulated over a period of over five years (See full text in Annex). In February 1935, the [US] War Department arranged a Congressional appropriation of $57 million dollars to build three border air bases for the purposes of pre-emptive surprise attacks on Canadian air fields. The base in the Great Lakes region was to be camouflaged as a civilian airport and was to “be capable of dominating the industrial heart of Canada, the Ontario Peninsula” (from p. 61 of the February 11-13, 1935, hearings of the Committee on Military Affairs, House of Representatives, on Air Defense Bases (H.R. 6621 and H.R. 4130). This testimony was to have been secret but was published by mistake. See the New York Times, May 1, 1935, p. 1. In August 1935, the US held its largest peacetime military manoeuvres in history, with 36,000 troops converging at the Canadian border south of Ottawa, and another 15,000 held in reserve in Pennsylvania. The war game scenario was a US motorized invasion of Canada, with the defending forces initially repulsing the invading Blue forces, but eventually to lose “outnumbered and outgunned” when Blue reinforcements arrive. This according to the Army’s pamphlet “Souvenir of of the First Army Maneuvers: The Greatest Peace Time Event in US History” (p.2). ( Professor F.W. Rudmin Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Comments on “War Plan Red”,One of the updates to the 1930 invasion plan was the use of chemical weapons against civilians:“In 1934, War Plan Red was amended to authorize the immediate first use of poison gas against Canadians and to use strategic bombing to destroy Halifax if it could not be captured.” (Ibid) It is worth noting that in the course of World War II,  a decision was taken by the War Department to retain the invasion plan on the books. War Plan Red was declassified in 1974.Raiding the Icebox. How the US Media Trivializes HistoryThe Washington Post, which casually dismissed the historical significance of “Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan — Red”, nonetheless acknowledged the aggressive nature of the proposed military endeavor:“A bold plan, a bodacious plan, a step-by-step plan to invade, seize and annex our neighbor to the north. …First, we send a joint Army-Navy overseas force to capture the port city of Halifax, cutting the Canadians off from their British allies. Then we seize Canadian power plants near Niagara Falls, so they freeze in the dark. Then the U.S. Army invades on three fronts — marching from Vermont to take Montreal and Quebec, charging out of North Dakota to grab the railroad center at Winnipeg, and storming out of the Midwest to capture the strategic nickel mines of Ontario.Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy seizes the Great Lakes and blockades Canada’s Atlantic and Pacific ports.  … “(Raiding the Icebox; Behind Its Warm Front, the United States Made Cold Calculations to Subdue Canada, by Peter Carlson, Washington Post, 30 December 2005, emphasis added)The original documents pertaining to the invasion of Canada including “War Plan Red” and “Defence Scheme No. 1.” are in the archives of the US Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.  (url link no longer functional)The  plan is detailed. It involves both military as well an intelligence components. According to historian John Major “War, Plan Red” also consisted in “a series of possible pre-emptive American campaigns to invade Canada in several areas and occupy key ports and railways before British troops could provide reinforcement to the Canadians…”Concluding Remarks Concerning US InterferenceWhile the 1935 invasion of Canada Plan was never carried out, historically “the military threat of an invasion plan served to oblige Canada to ultimately surrender to US political and economic pressures.”In recent history, this hegemonic objective was achieved in 2002 with the creation of US Northern Command (NorthCom).Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced unilaterally that US Northern Command would have jurisdiction over the entire North American region. US Northern Command’s jurisdiction as outlined by the US DoD includes, in addition to the continental US, all of Canada, Mexico, as well as portions of the Caribbean, contiguous waters in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans up to 500 miles off the Mexican, US and Canadian coastlines as well as the Canadian Arctic.Rumsfeld is said to have boasted that:“NORTHCOM – with all of North America as its geographic command – ‘is part of the greatest transformation of the Unified Command Plan [UCP] since its inception in 1947.’”NorthCom’s stated mandate is to “provide a necessary focus for [continental] aerospace, land and sea defenses, and critical support for [the] nation’s civil authorities in times of national need.” (Canada-US Relations – Defense Partnership – July 2003, Canadian American Strategic Review (CASR),ANNEXThe complete text of the 1935 Invasion of Canada can be consulted here  (Introduction by Prof Floyd Rudmin, Queens University) See below
